Her phone had been ringing over and over again all morning; yet, that was merely what made her a tad crankier than usual, because it had been like this day and night for the past weeks since the late Chief of Police was gunned down and murdered cold-bloodedly. The supposedly low crime rate was just a distant memory. At least, it was not as terrible as expected. A few had envisioned scenario in the veins of the Purge series. She preferred thinking that it was in between the drama series Iris and the video game Tom Clancy, the Division – she had such a vivid imagination when it came to envisioning Seoul in the break of anarchy, because, when looking at the state of the whole world, chaos was coming.
She tried to keep a smile and to maintain a composed expression while she met witnesses, had pleasant chats with suspects or dealt with colleagues. It had been a while since she had even touched a cigarette. With all the accumulated stress, she had rejoined the regulars club of the precinct outside of the station – with nearly one pack in a week. The number of coffees that she had bought – obviously at a coffee shop, because the rookies sucked at making basic instant coffee – made her waste time, money and gas. And, she had yet to tackle her issues when it came to have any decent rest. She was at her limit. She had finally reached it, and she was not in the mood to deal with living beings…
Sadly, she had to go down to meet a few undercover agents or, at the very least, the most annoying person in the planet.
Finishing her cigarette, she walked down the halls until she reached the aforementioned person’s unit. It was incredible how kissing ass and having a sob story could lead you into becoming a lieutenant at such a young age. Technically, honorable sir did honorable deeds for the sake of the Seoul Police Department. Circumstances had it that he was reduced into what he was now – a desk boy. She looked around. There were some folks of the Undercover Unit handing in reports or receiving their assignments. They really did not look like anything you would think of when you thought of the word ‘cop’. In all honesty, these officers were the real actors who should be receiving all the awards for fooling gang members – even leaders – and providing the SPD information.
She found who she was looking for at his desk – probably doing what he could to help out. Greeting him with a folder gently dropped on his work she gave him one of her best smiles that lack all the warmth and charm.
“I have a few leads that need to be checked out with some reports of your men who were on the scene of the late chief’s deathbed,” she said very nicely. “I believe that looking over those reports and putting everything together is part of job, right, Grumpy Pants?”
It had been a while since she had been on the darkest side of the web crawling with everything that one could possibly imagine. For those who were weak of heart, it was best to maintain a sane state of mind by surfing on the common interweb. Hackers were the least dangerous in her opinion considering that there are killers and others that also navigated on the dark net for thrills or money. Among those hackers, there were a few that Somin had come to discover and to keep contact with. Usually they were young kids that she would try to bring back to their sense and to use their skills for the good fight before they committed the ultimate mistake of their lives and that she no longer had the power to save them – she was a cop not a god.
She made sure that she was careful enough not to catch any unwanted and undesired attention from the mass as she went from one forum to the next. If one thought that 4chan was a terrible place, they were so terribly mistaken. 4chan was only the tip of the tip of the iceberg. It was paradise to her eyes especially since that one time she fell on an auction for young innocent souls. That discovery had shaken many of her colleagues that day and they can still not forget how they saved a few lives. Needless to say, the deeper you go the worst it will get.
Before she finished greeting her few little troublemakers, she had to break into walls of codes for a particular one. The detective was not a fool. She was not going to try to hack that particular individual. Instead, she was purposely making mistakes there and there to catch that person attention for a little conversation. It was just catching up nothing more – with a little job, because she was feeling kind and wanted to try once more to lure him to the good side. The individual in question made quite a name for himself and rumor has it that he was one of the best hackers in all gangs combined. And, to think that he was just some high schooler when he started if she remembered correctly – or was he younger? Who cared really?

The higher brass had to be out of options. Walking down the hallways of the central headquarters of the Seoul Police Department, she wondered if she was even fit for the position of Chief of Police. She had seniority that many could dream of. She had seen more horrors in months than some had in a decade. After letting out a sigh and mustering whatever insanity and courage in her, she was somewhat ready to deliver a speech that she wrote in point form on cue cards. Just when she was about to speak, she breathed heavily and threw those cue cards, because she did not need them.
“I was there. I was there when we were all ordered to face one of the greatest threats that had shaken Seoul to its core. I am not talking about the murder of our late Chief of Police, Lee Hyori. I am talking about what happened in Lotte in January. We should not forget how Black Lotus set bombs and killed dozens of civilians who were simply enjoying the grand reopening of the theme park. Children are forever scarred by the horrors they had witnessed. Some have lost their love ones. Some have lost their limbs. Let us not forget that the gangs even took advantage of the situation for their own hidden agenda. Afterwards, the late prime minister invited those who had risked their lives for a grand masquerade. We wore blue and we were given decorations. Then, out of the blue, we discovered that cruel truths about the ties of our politicians and Black Lotus. Another massacre shook the very foundations of our city and even our nation. I was there. Many of you were there. Many of our comrades either left or lost their lives. Let us not forget that.”
She paused while tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. It had been a while since Somin had felt nervous. She wished she could speak her mind, but now was not the time.
“Before she died, Chief Lee Hyori hosted an event where she spoke about the crime rate. We thought that it had lowered, but I believe that we were wrong. If anything, if I do not get appointed as temporary Chief of Police, I want the Seoul Police Department to be far more active, but not by declaring war to the gangs. It is time for us do our jobs properly. Detectives should be investigating. Scientists and professionals of the Crime Scene Unit should be thorough in their approach of evidence, because they are the rightful right hands of detectives. Officers should be there for to protect the people. We remember Chief Lee Hyori as the spokesperson against corruption. Let us keep her legacy alive and be the heroes that she saw us as.”
She waited a moment to calm down before she bowed to her peers and let the next one take place.
“Oh, Sominnie~” She chirped while sliding herself over to her best friend after tending to the needs of her customers, placing a beer down before her without question and giving the short haired female a long look. “Could you please not insult me by comparing me to this grotesque, victim like novel character that is an absolute whim and a clutz? Like- excuse me, I doubt any of the aforementioned terms matches me!”
“Ah, there is a dongsaeng who has a death wish.” The short-haired hissed out when she heard her name being called out so cutely. “It’s your job to be the cute one, but, last time I checked, I’m the older one, so please refrain in calling me so casually in those cutesy ways. Actually, I go by Freyja or Frey for short. You don’t want me to use your pretty name, right, Swan?”
She stretched a bit taking a good look at each individual at the bar. Some of them were completely wasted. If they were to take the road, she would be able to make some extra cash simply by arresting them for driving under influence; however, true to her principles, she would never add extra work on herself. She did not have enough time for herself to waste it on petty cases like these. Just one drunk driver would mean one extra report to write. These men could drink just as much as their heart desired, because their secret was sae with her. She even left her badge in the glove compartment. She was on civilian duty.
A smile lightened up her face at the snarky remark that Bella gracefully threw at her. “I’m not insulting you. If anything, you should be grateful. That Bella is incredibly famous. She has a fandom behind her, had two boys after her and ended up a vampire.” She grabbed the menu wondering what she was going to have and she added “If you think that you aren’t a total klutz, I could start spilling the tea of all your misadventures from high school to today. The character fits you oh so perfectly from how popular you were to boys to how you could be oblivious.” Her smile widened waiting for the other to come at her. Somin was in a relatively good mood at the moment.
From the top of any building, anyone would feel like they owned everything they laid their eyes on all the way to the horizon. That was how it felt like to be in power, to stand above all or to have everyone beneath. Months ago, the Korean Herald’s headlines were all about the murder of the imperial couple, the prime minister and the first lady – both who had ties with Black Lotus and that the Syndicate courteously exposed in the bloodiest masquerade to date. Now, the news was head over heels over the death the most powerful individual within the Seoul Police Department, late Lee Hyori. If only they knew that it was the same lady wo had little trust in her underlings and whom decided to have them a near death team bonding experience – of course, that was a secret that the higher brass kept safe. Long lived the Queen, but not let her face the divine justice all men must confront.
Behind her poker face, Somin felt not much. She watched the people mourn the beloved chief of the police. To be fair, she did try to clean up and send behind bars the corrupted – something that would always bring death and Somin had learned that one the hard way: no good cops will last if they try to eradicate the corruption. To be able to fight fire, you have to be fire yourself. The hubris the woman most likely committed was to be too forward and to be too trusting of others. Regardless the mistakes, she would be remembered as one of the greats. There was even a vigil in her honour already. The superiors kept on reminding every single officer in their troops to start searching for their uniforms, to wash them, to dry clean them, to iron them, etc. Just like one would mark the date for a wedding, the police department had marked July 19th for their late chief – and the police commissioner of course who is equally important.
The short-haired folded a couple of pages of the newspaper into paper planes and threw them one by one of the rooftop she was standing. She was lost in her thoughts as the planes crash one after the next. She felt happy to have missed the fiasco. It could have triggered her again. However, the terrorist attack on Lotte was old news now. Every detective in service had moved on from all the previous grandiose events for this one. After all, the criminal masterminds behind those events were apprehended. Some Black Lotus members there and there. A few Syndicate members there and there. Cases were closed at the speed of light. At this point, would it be best for the world to have a group of misfit heroes to avenge their love ones, because their heroes in service are giving the just retribution they deserve? It sometimes feels like the police department had become merciful. And, if they would have investigated, surely they could have connected a few dots and would have found some correlation.
It was simply hilarious that the Queen has fallen after giving a speech about the lower crime rate of the capital. Clearly, it was suspicious. With all those ‘what’s ifs’, one must be wary of what is brewing in the darkness. Yet, even she could notice a little pattern or a possible lead, she found it too troublesome. Her lack of trust in others forced her to seat on the backseat. Many seem to die these days. She was not one to believe in conspiracy theories, but Chief Hyori had been an advocate against corruption. Her murder was well-planned as if she had done her time and had served her purpose – cleaning the image of the once publically known corrupted department. That was one of the theories. The other was that Chief Hyori had a target on her ever since she rose to power. It was only a matter of time until someone decides to place the death sentence on her. Both would demand an amount of work and preparation which would probably include keep the troops off of the streets to make it seem like the crime rate lowered. Only someone truly ingenious would pull of this kind of hit.
Regardless the ideas, it was best to watch the world below slowly being consumed by the invisible hellfire. Unless… She shook her head. It was better not to think too much to play the hero – also known as racing to your coffin. In a great need of a smoke, she pulled out a cigarette and her lighter. The cig was not the only thing that she set of fire. She set ablaze what remained of the special edition of the Korean Herald. Here was the vigil for the queen who lived and who died in vain. There is one thing that everyone should remember: “When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.” It made the short-haired chuckle. Fiction was never too far away from reality. She wondered who was next in line: a mayor, a general, a celebrity…society?
The capital had its charms when the moon came out to play. It was dazzling with many lights, but, if only those lights were not red and blue, just the typical bright neon sights, illuminated buildings and lightened panels. The sound of sirens had made her jump. She held the steering wheel crisply and she drove a bit more slowly than usual. It was her first major case in a month and it made her a bit crankier than usual – not that she was forced in any means possible to take it. She was now tapping her finger on the wheel while reviewing the details of everything that was gathered so far. “A man was shot at point blank in one of the major hubs of the city and a witness managed to catch the act on tape,” she murmured.

At the red light, she opened her glove compartment and grabbed a paper bag from. She was unsure how she was going to react on the scene; therefore, she needed her cheap thrills – also known as antidepressants. By the time she would arrive to the scene, the magic of those little pills was going to be effective. She cursed under her breath before she popped the pill into her mouth. As she directed her attention back to the road, she glanced at the passenger’s seat where two folders had been placed delicately. She could not fathom anything good coming out from this. She had a bad premonition about what lied ahead. Why did she need to bring two, when she was only one person?
That feeling of dread and that one of guilt were looming over her. Rewind around three months ago and she had a partner to whom she had complete trust in. They had a solid bond nothing unbreakable though. Then, without warning, she packed her bags and left. Fast-forward back to the present and here she was finally picking up a case that demanded help. Without a partner within the precinct, she would have one designated by the higher brass. It was something beyond serious too, a murder. She shook her head, because that could not happen. She was worrying for nothing – that was what she thought however.
As she finally arrived at the crime scene, almost in the heart of Hongdae of all places, she parked herself were she could a bit far from the scene. She reviewed the details one last time. “Murder at point blank in a populated area, the murderer’s face was hidden. He shot the person execution style with one bullet in the head. He left during the mayhem that followed. First respondents arrived a surprising three minutes later.” She whispered while she grabbed her badge, her new one, and she placed her gun in her holster. She noticed that she was shaking and sighed – the pills were not full effect.
She stepped out of her car and walked fast towards the scene. On the way, she glanced around to look at a few faces in the crowd. Some murderers loved to come back to the crime scene. She showed her badge to one of the officers as she entered the scene’s ground. That was when she noticed someone with long-haired and a tall stature. It had to be fate’s sickest joke of the history, because, out of all the ways to meet him again, it had to be during a murder investigation. She pushed her short hair back thinking of how she was going to proceed.
“Good evening, sir,” she blurted out without much thinking. “What exactly are you doing here? It’s a murder investigation.” If she was walking on thin ice, the ice probably cracked under her and she was about to drown. She could not help but to act like ‘herself’ under pressure.
Muttering to herself as she headed towards a bar, she pondered on her course of action. It was just a friendly meeting, but, lately, she had been walking on egg shells. She had yet accustomed herself with her homeland even if a month had passed. News had it that her friend had been shaken by the recent events, so she had to show some support just like the other had been supportive of her ever since she came back. A sigh escaped her lips as she was about to pushed the door to enter and a flashback came to mind.
“Wow, Jung Somin,” she read at loud holding proudly her diploma. “I finally am done with school can you imagine? Remember when I told you how I planned out my future?” She nudged her hoobae with her elbow. It was one of those rare occasions when Somin would be more open and less tense. Besides, she had forced Jieun to wake early, because Somin could not do her makeup on her own – graduation was one of those exceptions. “I said something like ‘Okay, I’m going to finish high school, go straight to university, but still go part time at the police academy.’ That’s how I mapped it out. Plus, if you were to follow my footsteps, you’ll become my hoobae, again. I’ll still hold the authority.” She chortled wholeheartedly as she gave the other a piece of victory with the trademark finger V.
It had happened a while ago when they were still dreaming teens. They did end up suffering together at the police academy, served together for a couple of years and remained friends after the hurdle. When she thought about it, they also changed tremendously and not at all during that lapse of time. She sighed again as she entered the bar. Jieun, or Bella, was doing her thing – being her usual weirdly enthusiastic bubbly girl – while serving her regulars and other customers. Somin, or Freyja nowadays, took a sit and wondering how she could act as if nothing really happened.
“Bella Swan, what’s up?” she greeted. “I came to pick you up.”

“In all honesty, I don’t really care what people think of me. I have a hard time dealing with humans in general. I gave up. I will be honest with you, Belle. I knew that I could have grab a phone explain the situation briefly and bid my farewells. I just did not take the opportunity. You know why? I don’t like goodbyes. I’m frightened of them,” she confessed slowly falling asleep at the bar. It was late. She had an extra glass of wine that she should have not taken. It had been a while since she was wasted to the point of no return. If she was in a rational state of mind, never would those words would have parted from her lips. She would have never had fathom processing those thoughts in the first place. Hell, she would have never had tears threatening to fall and forcing her to wipe the corner of her eyes. “They hate me. Everyone always does at one point anyways. It’s better to be feared or hated than to be loved, no? Wouldn’t you agree? I’m a coward. I lack the courage to even come clean to anyone. It’s always a matter of circumstances as if fate dictated me and a said person to meet. Then again, predestination and fickle theories like that are or hillbillies who come to believe at stupidity such as love at the first sight or happy ever after.” She looked at the half-full glass and chuckled. “Did you know that I stayed out of trouble in France? I would only drink a glass of wine when I would dine…I would cheat with a glass when night came and I would listen to music or paint. I started to love painting after visiting all those galleries.” She sighed as she pushed the glass away from her. “You got a friend in me…that’s what you say every so often…does that mean that you do not hate me too? Or, do you forgive me for just vanishing out of thin air? It is not like deserve it right? I reap what I sow…” she ended up murmuring shrugging at her words. “Your clients must be so damn annoying. I’m annoyed myself. I’m just blabbering nonsense above…on top…whatever…over nonsense. I should have taken the other choice…not like it would have been the right choice regardless. It would have been easier to deal with the aftermath even if it would have been troublesome to go to everyone…they would have seen me and would have been glad that I’m back then they would move on with their lives. I would have been out of the loop…but…I would have been part of something. And, I knew what would have happened…damn.” She finally stood up and nearly stumbled on stool right next to her. It did not matter, because her house was close by and she could at least walk straight after adjusting with her ‘lightheadedness’. “I’m off, Belle…why am I saying Belle…Bella. I still got the French in the system. Oh, and…it’s Freyja now. Selene disappeared; Hekate poofed.” Somin died a long time ago. “Unni, out.”
