Standing at the chanter stand last night, I was facing the freestanding icon of the Crucifixion at the other side of the nave, and singing, “A Crown of thorns is placed on the head of the King of angels. He who wore a false purple robe covered the heavens with clouds. He is smitten who, in the Jordan, delivered Adam. The Bridegroom of the Church is fastened with nails, and the son of the Virgin is pierced with a spear… .”

The lonely image of Christ crucified was dwarfed by the iconography of the saints on the wall behind it, and I began to contemplate how small and insignificant Christ’s death appears in history, and what an inglorious end it would be to the story … if it were the end of the story.

My eyes were then drawn to the top of the wall, in the very corner, where an icon of Eve looks out upon the scene. Her expression, or so it appeared to me, was one of horror—her hands raised as if to say, “Stop! This can’t be happening! My Lord! my Creator!”

“I knew Him in the Garden. We loved one another, but in my arrogant disobedience I ruined that for all time. I’ve watched for thousands of years, as each successive generation of my children strayed farther from Him, became more depraved, and destroyed one another. I watched, helpless to right the wrong that cascaded out from me into an ever-darkening world.” “I recognized Him at once. I knew he had come to set right the injustice I unleashed on the world. But the injustice is too great. The darkness has grown too strong. What if even He cannot overcome it." 

"No. They’re beating Him! They’re killing Him! No!”

“He’s dead.”

“They’ve buried him in a tomb. How can this be? I’ve murdered my Lord. There is no hope now to turn back the darkness.” As Eve covers her tear-streaked face and succumbs to despair, she feel a strong, warm hand grasp her wrist and begin to pull her upward.
