It’s Michaelmas…

…which means it’s time for our villainous Michaels to shine! Now, until this day I didn’t have one of these, but I also didn’t have a name for the villain of Valkrya. So, I thought, why not make him a Michael? It actually works quite well.

Now, I’m not actually far enough into my first draft for him to be introduced, but I did find a quick scene that I wrote to include later on!

 Michael stepped towards her, his eyes glinting. “I can offer you so much more, Caroline.” His oily words slid over her, creeping into her heart. “You and I could rule the world together, if you’d let us.”

“But Angelica-”

An expression of pure rage crossed Michael’s face. “Would she have you in her sitting room, if she knew? Would she sit next to you at lunch? Do you really think she’s so different from the rest?”

Caroline felt her heart sink right down into the floor. Maybe he was right.

“The world will bow before us,” he continued, “and they won’t be able to hurt you anymore.” He reached over and took her cheek in his hand, tilting her head up so that their eyes met.  “The two of us were meant for great things. Just come with me, and you will never have to be alone again.”

Thank you @gingerly-writing (and of course @michael-lover-anon too!) for introducing me to the Michaelmas movement and finally finding me the name for my villain after three years of searching! I’ll have a lot more to post next year, I promise :)

So, this has been on my mind for several months, and I just wanted to make sure you guys are aware that @michael-lover-anon is a satire account, and has permission to jokingly fawn over evil Michaels, because people I don’t know going on about Michael like he could be redeemed, or that he could possibly be okay in any way shape or form, makes me extremely uncomfortable, especially since I based him off of several abusive parental figures i personally know, so I need you guys to know that. Like, I really, really do.

I have received the express permission of the writers whose Michaels I mainly focus on. The majority of writers I interact with know my real identity. Those who don't know who I am, I mess with less often and with greater care. Part of the reason MLA has their own account is so it’s official and undeniable who I am and the writers know exactly where to find me so if any of them are uncomfortable or uneasy with anything regarding MLA’s activity, they can let me know and I can adjust to their needs/boundaries.

There have been times writers contacted me privately to express discomfort with some of the jokes I made or the amount of jokes I was making. There have been times I reached out to the writers myself to ask them “Is this okay?”, “Would you rather I not do that?”, etc. Even with the writers who don’t know my true identity, I consistently ask for them to tell me if/when to knock it off or back off or let me know if I’m crossing a line.

When someone submits an MLA-style anon, I personally send the post to the involved writer(s) and let them know that anon wasn’t me. Sometimes they're okay with it, sometimes they're not. It’s a matter of keeping track of who’s okay with what, who has set what boundaries, who prefers what forms of teasing...

MLA is a satirical blog poking fun at the number of Michaels in writeblr and their tendency to be awful people. It’s an amusing idea of a person foolishly lusting after all fictional Michaels in writeblr, despite their awfulness. It’s funny, but it’s delicate, because this kind of stuff, if taken seriously, can do real damage, as turning a blind eye to a person or a character’s bad qualities can lead to the invalidation of that person or character’s victims and can bring harm to the one idolizing that person/character themselves. Much abuse and injustice can begin this way.

Often, written antagonists are based on or inspired by true experiences in a writer’s life. You can see how this might make for sensitive subjects. Poking fun about them can be hurtful or offensive, even when it’s done without malicious intent, which is why MLA regularly checks in with the writers to make sure their satire is not causing harm.

Again, this is possible for me to do because the writers know who I am, and even if they don't know my true identity, they know exactly where and how to contact me. When a real anon makes these jokes, the writer has no way of knowing if they are serious (which can cause great concern due to the things explained above) and no way of directly communicating with them to explain their concerns, feelings, and boundaries without announcing their business to all of Tumblr.

The consent, comfort, and health of the writers MLA interacts with are important to me. If MLA crosses your lines or tests your boundaries or makes you uncomfortable in any way, please communicate with me.

(I used to send anons and sign them off as “— MLA” or something like that but I realized that anyone could send an anon like that and the writers would have no way of knowing if it was me or not unless I logged into the MLA account and confirmed from here, so I never do that anymore.)

Saint Michael, Archangel

Michael, who is as God. A son of God, one of the grandest of the archangels. Michael, who led the wings of Heaven into battle against the greatest of God’s creations, the Morning Star. Michael, who fought his own friend, the Dragon. Michael, who defeated his own brother, the Satan. Such as he was told to do. Such as he has always done. As he sent Lucifer crashing down to Earth, so he sent the angels that followed the light-bringer’s cause. Lucifer’s actions created the Fallen, the angels and the demons that walk amongst the humans of Earth, but it was Michael who landed the final blow. Michael, with his emerald wings and saffron hair. Michael, with his flaming sword and blinding halo. Michael, who did as he was told. Who always does as he is told. That is who he is.

Michael, who is as God. He comes to Earth, now, in search of an answer. Answers that God will not give him because Michael will not ask them; he knows his Father all too well, and his Father knows the archangel just the same. But God lets him go because He knows that Michael needs the answer, one to a question that he is too afraid to ask, too afraid to voice, too afraid to think. Michael seeks his brother. He seeks Lucifer. He seeks the truth, a truth he already knows, and when he finds it, he won’t go back. Back to his fellow archangels, to his Heaven, to his Father; he will not go back, not just yet. He will not because knows he cannot, because he must find the truth of the Morning Star, of the Dragon, and of the Satan, and when he finds that truth, he will ask another question. And just like his last question, he knows the answer to this one.

Is he, Michael, who is as God, the one who will avenge the Devil’s death? When Michael asks this question, it will be asked in the presence of two others. The Nephil who stole the Crown of Lucifer, and the Watcher who helped him achieve it.

Ohhhh that blurb is a lot longer on Tumblr then I thought it would be. But anyway, here’s the first of many characters for my urban fantasy WIP, Smoke and Mirrors, specifically one of the major antagonists. I’ll be posting moodboards for more characters in the future, so if you’re interested, keep an eye out for them!

HAPPY MICHAELMAS YALL

“Get the hell away from them,” Bay snarled.

The windows rattled but Bay reigned in the magic before they shattered again. He was not- was not- going back down in those cells. Bay would sooner slit his own throat before he let that happen.

The guards did not budge an inch but Michael, still lounging on his throne flicked his hand and said, “Go back to your stations and everyone else get out. I want to talk to my son and the… humans.”

The guards sheathed their swords and the court ushered out of the room. Bay helped Connie and Sammi up and sharply whispered, “What are you doing here?”

Sammi snorted. “Typical.”

Connie gave her a glare before looking back at him. “You are our family,” she said, softly. “It wouldn’t be right without you with us.”

“Not when you can be used against me,” Bay growled. “You should have just… forgotten me. Just because I was screwing your brother does not mean we are family.”

Connie flinched and Bay closed his eyes as Sammi smacked him.

Hard.

Bay tasted blood and he deserved that and in all honesty, whatever got them mad enough at him to go home, to forget about him- it was worth it.

“You watch your mouth,” Sammi snarled.

Bay refused to look at her and turned to his father. “Take them back,” he said. “They do not belong here. They’re not one of us.”

An amused smile curled on Michael’s face and he rasped a low laugh. “And here I thought you would be happy to see your pets. A few weeks with us and you’ve already forgotten your humble origins.”

Fuck you.

Michael rose from his throne and stepped slowly, deliberately down the dias and up to him and the witches. He took Connie’s chin between his bony fingers and looked her over. “You’re cute. But you obviously are not his… type. Tell me, pet, what happened to your brother?”

Connie jerked her chin out of his grasp and snarled at him. “Do not touch me.”

Michael chuckled and Sammi held her twin back. “Careful,” she warned. “You do not want Connie for an enemy.”

The promise of death radiated in Connie’s dark brown, gold flecked eyes; Sammi’s as well. But Michael was truly not worried, if anything, his amusement only grew. “What would you like done with them, Bay. I am sure we could make some… accommodations. The girls have made such a long journey.”

“No,” Bay clipped out. “Why should I put the effort into someone who’ll be fertilizer in a few centuries at most. They served their purpose and now that purpose is dead. I don’t want them here when they’re useless to me. Send them back.”

Michaelmas 2018

It wasn’t til Thommo yelled out that Emma realised James had completely screwed up the kick, having punted the ball onto a classroom roof. Thommo looked around for a moment, then ran at the side of the building.

When he neared the wall he jumped, then pushed off the side of the wall with the other foot and caught the guttering with his hands, pulling himself up onto the roof with ease. He held up the football like a trophy, then threw it back down to a rather embarrassed James.

“Michael Thompson, get down from there!” the teacher on yard duty yelled. He scrambled down, grinning.

“Did you see that?” he asked Emma when he joined the group,draping his arm around her shoulders. “I could teach you.” He was too close, breathing heavily on her face.

Emma stepped forward, removing herself from his embrace. “I’m right,” she snapped. “Enjoy that detention you’re gonna get.”

IT’S MICHAELMAS

what is Michaelmas? 29th of September is the actual religious date. the writeblr event was started by a loose crew of friends who all happen to have villainous Michael characters posting snippets and excerpts on the same day. we decided to merge the two this year and bring more evil chaos down on everyone ;P

how can I join in? have a villainous character called Michael. make some content for it. post it on the 29th. it’s that simple!

they must be called Michael. no Mikhails or other derivatives for this one, sorry!
