So these pictures of a “Syrian man selling pens in Beirut, Lebanon” went viral over the past few days 

Activists on twitter and in Beirut decided to find the man and his daughter and wanted to help them.

Turns out that his name is Abdul, and he is a Palestinian refugee from the notorious Yarmouk camp in Syria. He is a single father with two children, Abdelillah (boy) 9 years old, and Reem (girl) 4 ½ years old. 

Activists set up an indiegogo fundraiser to help out Abdul and his two children and donations came pouring in. Over the past 8 hours, almost $34,000 has been raised to help them.

Anorexia isn’t a slim figure shyly refusing a cupcake. It’s hair growing over your freezing malnourished body. Depression isn’t a model with running mascara staring into the sunset. It’s staring at the fucking ceiling at 4 in the morning with burning eyes because you can’t even find the motivation to close them. Self harm isn’t lovely boys kissing your arms telling you you’re still beautiful. It’s nasty fucking scars that will be there forever and showers that sting. Panic attacks aren’t burying your face into your lovers chest and them telling you everything will be okay. It’s feeling out of control and like oxygen has been taken from you. Mental illnesses aren’t beautiful. They don’t make you special and don’t make people suddenly care about you. They’re monsters that destroy lives. So stop taking them lightly and promoting them to impressionable teenagers on the damn internet.

The 5 Seconds guys are unbelievable musicians. I knew who they were from my friend Jess from the Veronicas who dated [guitarist] Michael [Clifford]. She told me about them way, way prior so my predisposition to the band was very different from what the world thought, which was that they were a boy band. I knew they weren’t. I went into it thinking they were another Mest. When they started singing I realized, ‘This is the best pop-punk band I’ve ever heard.’ They can all sing. The drummer is a better singer than 90-percent of the bands that I work with and he’s the drummer. 5 Seconds of Summer, they’re all really clear of what their job is. Calum [Hood] is the best bass player 5 Seconds of Summer could ever have. He’s a fucking phenomenal bass player. A lot of bands don’t have that.

The notions that LGBT people MUST be out or else they don’t respect themselves, or they’re harboring internalized homophobia, or they’re not being TRUE to themselves are SO harmful and SO problematic because there are people like this in situations where the choice between staying in the closet and coming out is often the choice between safety and very real danger.
