You’re always so prepared! I’m not one for squid but if you ever want a little help, I can get over that.
Well, I would hate to make you feel uncomfortable.
Perhaps sometime, we could find something else to test. That is, if you like.Â

You’re always so prepared! I’m not one for squid but if you ever want a little help, I can get over that.
Well, I would hate to make you feel uncomfortable.
Perhaps sometime, we could find something else to test. That is, if you like.Â
Perhaps you weren't listening quite properly to what I said last lesson-
There was to be no excuse not to hand in your assignment today. I see no missing limbs to validate whatever drivel you find upon yourself to use as a pardon.
Actually, I think you'll find that not only did I hand it in, but it is worthy of top marks.Â
Muggles are so odd. Did they just wake up one morning and think “I want to cure the flu so I will cut off a rat's head"?
Kind of, I guess. But it's not as barbaric as it sounds.Â
Catch one? Sometimes I think you’re a little bit mad, Michael, but I guess it’s a good thing I like it. [laughs] What would I do without you to protect me from the big bad squid?Â
Well how am I supposed to learn more about them if I can't catch one?
Of course, I wouldn't just let it flail about. I don't fancy having myself knocked into the lake in November. I have a few charms picked out for the occasion.Â
I suppose not… still how do they decide what they dissect?
Like, rats react the same way we do to medicine, but pigs are most like us internally, and really big animals like cattle make it really easy to examine different bits.Â
It really depends. They dissect mostly anything for different reasons. But it's not all as gory and gross as people think.Â
It’s barbaric…
Not really. We can't always be wizards, after all. They do the best they can, really. Would you rather they all die for silly reasons?Â

I have the money to pay for Herbologists to tend to plants, unlike some. [tight lipped smile]
[ignores the comment about Granger, although the thought of it dents his pride] Halfblood Ravenclaw? [raises eyebrows and snorts] Pray tell, who is this Ravenclaw? It’s not you, is it? [condescending tone]Â
Silly Draco, of course, me. Can't quite catch Hermione, but my skill is enough to best you.Â
And that's not something daddy can buy for you.Â
That’s vile!! Dissecting things? What does that help?
[very matter-of-factly] Well, muggles can't use magic to heal animals or themselves, so they have to rely on muggle medicine. And dissecting things and doing experiments are how they figure out how to get that done.Â
Squids in the lake as in THE giant squid? I’m honestly torn between being terrified of it and fascinated at the same time!
Well, not THE giant one, but hoping I could catch one of the smaller ones. Little late in the year for them to be near the surface, though.Â
It's alright, I wouldn't let it hurt anyone. [smiles a bit]
…I don’t know what biogily is. But you’re a wizard now so thank goodness you don’t have to mess with those things.
Biology, yeah. Like, dissecting animals and how living things work.Â
You know, a lot of it is still important.... [trails off a bit]
Ravenclaws don’t even sing in the shower? Everyone does that.
And yes, I’m just taking the mick. Hope you don’t mind my much needed humour being taken out on you. And if your experiments are “exceedingly brilliant" as you say they are, then of course I am!Â
Well if you say so. I do have some really interesting theories about the squids in the lake, as well as some new potions I've been trying to develop.Â
You are? Good for you. I always found potions to be like cooking, which I’m shite at. Plus having that pervy old bat staring down at me every class quite put me off the subject.
I always loved science as a kid. Always thought I'd study chemistry or biology or something. And look where I am now. Wizarding school.Â
The manual work of planting and nourishing the plants, however, is tedious and can be done without.Â
I’m almost the top of the year in Potions, Corner. I listen just fine. [says flatly, lips pursed]
Oh but [sarcastically] who better to control the quality of ingredients, than someone like you, Malfoy?Â
Oh, almost. I see. Can't quite get to the top, then? Can't beat a halfblood Ravenclaw, or a muggle-born Gryffindor? Aren't purebloods supposed to be better than everyone else?
I know, Neville’s always talking to me about this plant or that flower. And I care about my classes! I’m top in the class for Divination
well tied with Parvati
They all look the same to me, the plants. It's easy to say I'm not herbology's biggest fan. I am a wonder at potions, however.Â
[clucks his tongue] No no no, Corner, don’t get me wrong now: I care about my grades very much. I just don’t think Herbology really counts as a subject.
But that doesn't mean it can't help with other things. It may not be my favorite, or yours for that matter, but that doesn't mean it's any less important. I'm sure you've heard Slughorn talk about the importance of understanding our ingredients. That is, of course, assuming you bother to pay attention.Â
I can never understand why people want to bother with it in the first place. Beyond the fact that it gets you all sweaty and dirty, it’s just dull.
Hey, some people enjoy that sort of thing. And I'm the type of person to care about their classes. Nothing's dull if you decide to like it.Â
.
And to think you’ve been holding out on me this whole time, then! Unbelievable.Â
But I guess I can forgive you…if you tell me more about these mysterious experiments and their interesting outcomes!Â
Ravenclaws don't really need to sing. I'd quite imagine the arts are more of a badger subject.Â
And my experiments, while exceedingly brilliant and varied, are not much to speak of. Sure you're interested?Â
