I'd never actually seen AI writing before so encountering it on ao3 last year I didn't recognize it for what it was at first. My impression was this is clearly an inexperienced writer but they have some good sentences in here.
But like once I realized, it's just so incredibly glaring (I know Neil Clarke of Clarkesworld says this and people are baffled and want it quantified but it's true).
And I started seeing it in so many fics. Fics that have some great ideas and you want to root for the writer because you can imagine them improving and their work being great--but the thing is they will never improve. Their writing will never be great, because the AI cannot improve. Their "work" will always just be the same disappointing thing that falls short over and over again where the reader is left feeling like this could have been good.
And like, it looks almost like real writing. There will be good sentences in there. But the voice is often the same, or falls into being the same. The structure follows though but there's an extremely uncanny lack of coherence. It's not logical or consistent or a unified whole.
The best way I can think to describe it is it's like the puzzle pieces fit but it's the wrong picture on the pieces. If you look at the whole thing it doesn't feel like the writing was aware of itself as it was being written. And like, the human brain is incredible, even the most novice writer can do what AI can't without even trying, which is create something that understands what was writen a paragraph or ten ago and weaves that understanding through to everything else to create a tapestry that feels tangible inside somebody else's mind.
I don't think I fully understood how microscopic that sense of coherence could be beause I'd never seen writing lack it utterly before.
