The Battered Wife
I am worried about my friend;
She is in an abusive relationship.
She married a rich businessman
to help stabilize her financial situation.
The opposite has happened.
True, he has a certain charm –
if you like that sort of thing,
But I don't appreciate the way he ogles her friends.
Can his money make up for this benign violation?
His volume made him sound persuasive,
But now he is erratic and dominating.
He cannot handle criticism,
Blaming others for his mistakes.
He is limiting every aspect of her life,
from connecting with her family to
separating her from her children –
Her heart locked in a cage like their bodies.
He rejects her friends who 'don't look like her,'
He even keeps her away from her gay cousin.
He won't let her Muslim friend visit.
When he learned that her sister had an abortion
after being raped, he shunned her.
Their home is a study in fear --
Armed militiamen roaming the grounds,
Yet, still she stays with him.
Is she just running out the clock?
Her moderate beliefs have been eclipsed;
No voice of her own, she cannot cast her ballot.
She is so different than the goddess she was
before she met him.
Secretive about his business dealings,
He doesn't pay his taxes.
The jobs he promised her family members
never materialized.
And where is his money?
Lost or squandered,
due to lawsuits and mismanagement.
Infuriating to me is that
He doesn't care about her health or well-being.
She took quarantine seriously while he refused
to wear a mask, making fun of those who did.
When he unsurprisingly came down with the virus,
He did nothing to protect her, and ended up infecting her, too.
He got great doctors to speed along this recovery
while she was left to languish.
I am at my wits' end.
It is impossible to live with a liar who keeps
changing the rules to benefit himself.
I love this woman more than I can say.
I don't want to abandon her.
But if America were my best friend
And she asked me what to do,
The only advice I have left is,
“Dump the guy.”
I don't much care for Vegas, but I was delighted to discover nearby Valley of Fire State Park. Red rocks, sandy trails, lizards, and petroglyphs! Scanned from film, Nevada, 1994-ish. Discovered at Valley of Fire State Park, Clark County, Nevada. See more at Trover

GEORGE FLOYD
I’m having trouble finding the words.
After weeks of lockdown, After months of unemployment, Of the rent being due, Of the water being shut off, Of the heat building,
Of watching police brutalize protesters at a protest against police brutality, Of even the press being attacked.
I had the words in my youth, Shouting them from a megaphone, No shortage of ire. Have I gone numb to the decades of violence, fear and inequality? Doubtful at times that things will ever change, Bewildered by those who don’t see or understand what I grew up with?
I am watching history repeat again and again And I cannot find the words.

Tower detail, Great Wall, Huanghuacheng section, Huairou District, rural Beijing, February 2002. Since the Disneyfication of this section, I hear you can now take boat rides on the lake to see the wall from all angles. Not jealous at all. Discovered at Huanghuachengcun, Beijing, China. I used to avoid cemeteries until I went to Taiwan. Western graveyards were spooky places, with gray headstones popping out of the ground like rotten teeth. But Taiwan, where a mix of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism is practiced, brought style and reverence to their dead. From a distance, the colorful, tiled pavilions looked like miniature houses gracing the hillsides. Each grave can contain several plots with the family named emblazoned in gold. There were pictures of the deceased, vases for flowers, and incense burners. There were altars on which to offer snacks and tea, and a place to eat with your ancestors while fu dogs stood watch. The graveyards were usually deserted except for Qing Ming (Grave-Sweeping Day), so it was seen as very odd for a white woman to be wandering around with her camera. Discovered at Xinhai Cemetery, Taipei, Taiwan. See more at Trover
Knocking on the door to the Forbidden City. In the massive compound that is Gu Gong, I found the tiny details to be as rich as the grand architecture. January 2002. Discovered at The Forbidden City, Beijing, China. See more at Trover
Before I went to Taipei, I’d seen few pictures of the city. I was more familiar with #hongkong 🇭🇰 & it’s huge white apartment #highrises. As I struggled to improve my Mandarin, I’d dream I was being hemmed in by these #buildings, surrounding me like giant teeth. Luckily, Taipei lacked these structures, my Chinese improved as needed, & #HK is now one of my favorite cities. https://www.instagram.com/p/CAo1gIBhodY/?igshid=1gx2gi34db0wn
