WHICH IS IT???
probably very unpopular opinion but movie michael afton was a necessary cleansing ritual for the michael afton fan community, i genuinely hated how the masses treated his character prior and ive lowk been avoiding saying that
can you explain the henmike thing because I kind of assumed you hated henry for existing and want michael to beat him to death
Oh I definitely don't hate Henry. I don't think he's a good person, but that doesn't mean I don't like him as a character. I also feel the need to clarify that my enjoyment of the ship is like 90% based on headcanons, so much of my explanation might not make any sense if you view the characters differently lol.
I do think that Henry and Michael would hate each other, Henry blaming Michael for killing the bite victim and, in his eyes, starting everything, and Michael blaming Henry for covering up the MCI and letting William get away with everything. That being said, I think they would also have an odd understanding between them, and I think they would hate that fact. Think that tweet that's like "only one person has ever understood me and I fucking hate the guy." That's them. They are the only people on earth who can somewhat understand what the other is going through because of them both having such close relationships to William, and him being the primary motivator for much of their actions throughout the series.
I think a lot of people view shipping two characters as thinking they are in love, but I definitely don't think they are at all in love. I think their relationship is toxic and unhealthy for both of them, born out of the cognitive dissonance of grief conflicting with hatred and the simple need for an outlet for complicated emotions they don't want to actually deal with.
Henry had a homoerotic relationship with William, now hates him and wants revenge, and seems to make decisions that benefit him while disregarding how they might hurt others. Michael is someone who looks very similar to William, seems to be easily manipulated or at least extremely willing to follow orders, and has some pretty major daddy issues. If thatβs not a recipe for disaster then I donβt know what is.
William ruined their lives and then disappeared, and neither of them really know how to deal with that, so they turn to the closest thing they can find. They see him in each other, and they hate it, and they hate how much they're drawn to it. They both hate William, but they still somehow miss him deep down.
I think Henry would find satisfaction in having power over Michael, who he views as a stand-in for William, and Michael would find comfort in an authority figure who has power over him. They are each, in a way, filling the William shaped hole in each other's lives. Again, I do not think this is a good thing for either of them, and I think they are both also extremely bitter and resentful towards each other.
All in all, I'm just a big fan of exploring unhealthy relationship dynamics, and I think that theirs has the potential to be absolutely fascinating.
It's always been a little bit odd to me that William and Michael, characters that presumably have a fairly large age gap, have the same voice actor. We first hear William's voice in the SL intro cutscene, and we hear Michael's voice in the Golden Freddy mode cutscene.
The intro cutscene most likely takes place at some point in/around the mid 80s, and the custom night one (if you assume EnnardGuard which I know like nobody believes but itβs totally definitely real and true just trust me please) would be in 2015. That would presumably make William and Michael similar ages in their respective cutscenes, which makes the shared voice actor actually make perfect sense.
Fnaf 1 1989 confirmed basically
you being a henmike fan was DEFINITELY not in my bingo but I'm grateful of it
It was not on mine either but what can I say once I thought about it I was like waittttt...
I am genuinely going to lose my mind the next time I get a notification for a "Midnight Motorist SOLVED" video I cannot do this anymore
It will never not be hilarious to me that when playing Sister Location for the first time and seeing the "Mike" label on the keypad, MatPat wrote it off thinking that the keypad's name was Mike and it was just a meaningless reference, but Markiplier immediately clocked "Is my name Mike? Mike as in Mike Schmidt?"
I think for purposes of figuring out characterization it's very much important to reflect on to what extent Michael as a character is meant to be separated from the player themselves. For the most part, Michael is you, you are Michael. Of course, there are things that Michael knows that you don't in each game, but what's really worth considering is where that's meant to end.
Specifically in SL and FFPS, there's a twist reveal at the end of the game with the scooping and the fire respectively. The player is not intended to know about these, and was not meant to fully predict these either. Beyond maybe thinking while playing that you're not being told the whole truth, or that everything might not be what it seems, you're supposed to be at the very least somewhat surprised by the endings of these games. The same can presumably be said for Michael.
Michael is very much a blank slate protagonist. We barely get any in game info on him or his story because we're meant to project ourselves onto him, he is us. He is the vessel in which the player experiences the events of the games.
So given that, I believe that it can be reasonably assumed that since the player is not supposed to know about Baby's ulterior motives or the FFPS fire, Michael isn't intended to either.
Of course, you can make the argument that it would make more sense in lore for him to be aware of these things, which is fair, but the thing is, you have to remember that Michael Afton is not a real person. Above all else, he is a fictional character, and a protagonist at that. He is a plot device that is being used to tell a story, and he likely isn't meant to be much more aware of what's going on during the games than the player is.
A mystery is told from the perspective of someone who doesn't know the answer, because otherwise there would be no mystery. Being a character who's heavily involved in the whole story, Michael obviously isn't entirely unaware of what's going on in these games. But he's most likely not fully aware of the impending outcome while the player remains in the dark, simply because that's not how stories like these are told. If that was the case, then we wouldn't be playing from his point of view.
It is absolutely bizarre to me that due to Jeremy's lack of any kind of canon personality or story at all outside of being a guy who worked at Freddy's for a week (and maybe was the 87 victim but also maybe not) combined with Michael's extremely vague storyline and characterization, jeremike as a ship pretty much has endless possibilities and near complete free rein as far as dynamics and stories go. And despite that fact, I have never seen a depiction of it that is not the most boring, bland, uninteresting ship I have ever seen in my life.
