summary: It's been a year since you met Abbot, and two months since you met Langdon. You know you should be honest with both of them about who you're seeing, but for some reason, you can't be; however, someone forces your hand, and the reckoning of your decisions slaps you in the face... but not in the way you expect. — 15.4k words!
"You're not too bad, Langdon."
You chuckle to yourself, tracing a three on the mini golf scorecard with the world's tiniest pencil as you hold your putter between the side of your body and your elbow.
You talked a big game on the car ride here — if only to get your date on the course — but he doesn't know about your super duper, really big secret that you haven't told anyone.
You fucking suck at mini golf.
"You know you can call me Frank, right?" He wears an easy smile as he collects his ball from the course, slipping the neon yellow golf ball into his pants before he joins your side.
"Yeah, I could," You shrug before you hand him the scorecard and pencil, ignoring the way your fingers brush against his when you pass Langdon those items, "but what's the fun in that?"
You step onto the green, approaching your neon orange golf ball with some apprehension, even though it's only positioned a few inches from the hole. You've managed to whiff shots much closer than this — there's a reason you're not a professional golfer, or a professional athlete in any sport, for that matter — but you're still gonna give this your best shot.
Not fucking up should be your only thought at the moment, but your mind can't help but wander as you position your club on the green.
Today was perfect. Truly, if you had to pick a dream date, this would've been it. The road trip to Fremont, Ohio should've been awkward, since you only talked to Langdon twice in-person and briefly over text to arrange a time for him to pick you up, but you found plenty to chat about when you looked through the glove box of his car to find something else to listen to besides the same five top pop hits of the year.
"You're joking," You pulled out the CD case with a wicked grin on your face, "Styx?"
"It helps me get in the mood for work," Langdon explained, "You don't have to–"
"–my parents raised me on eighties rock. My mom was more of a Def Leppard girl, so I grew up listening to Hysteria on repeat," You babbled on, ignoring the look of admiration that he gave you as he waited for the stoplight to turn green, "My dad listened to everything from that era. Foreigner, Guns 'n Roses, Van Halen, Mötley Crüe… I don't know if I should've been listening to Girls, Girls, Girls when I was five, but I think I turned out alright."
"Huh," Langdon shook his head, wearing a teasing smile, "you are full of surprises."
"I aim to delight and terrify," You shot back before you opened up the CD case, "shall we?"
You didn't spend much time listening to the album as you spoke over the sound blaring out of the speakers. You were sure you've never talked that much in your entire life, but Langdon didn't really seem to mind as he somehow managed to carry the conversation when you needed to take a breath, and he caught all of your niche references.
Forget about finding a man to match your freak — finding one that matches your nerd is so, so much more fun.
And who says that those two attributes are mutually exclusive, anyways?
You both wore a shocked expression when he parked at the presidential museum all of a sudden — Had it truly already been three and a half hours? Where had the time gone? — but you weren't opposed to the idea of stretching your legs after such a long drive. Especially when it meant watching Langdon stretch his arms, and you saw a small bit of his stomach peek out under his Pittsburgh Steelers shirt due to the gesture.
"We're in Browns country," You warned him, trying to hide the flush on your face as you stared at his toned stomach, "you better watch yourself."
"We're winning the overall series–"
"–how'd that last matchup go?" You asked, causing Langdon to hiss in pain.
"Too far," He looked you up and down with a suspicious eye, "don't tell me–"
"–my brother is a die-hard Steelers fan, and he brainwashed me into becoming one at an impressionable young age." You joked. "I'm starting to think that he only wants to visit me as an excuse to go and watch the Steelers play on their home turf."
"You should go," He encouraged, "It's a lot of fun."
"You've went–" You paused, shaking your head. "Right, I forgot that you people have 'doctor money'."
"You people?" Langdon repeated, with a bit of confusion in his voice. "I went with a few of my friends when I was in college. It took us weeks to save up enough money for tickets."
"Ah, so even doctors go through the broke-ass-college-kid phase," You knocked his shoulder with your own as you passed by him, "I'm teasing. I busted my ass to pay for college, so I didn't really have a lot of extra cash once groceries were bought, the month's rent was settled, and I put enough gas in my car to get me through the week."
…Way to ruin the mood, dumbass.
"I'm glad you got that experience, though." You attempted to steer the conversation in another direction, ignoring the concerned look he gave you. "I'll have to call my brother sometime and see if he wants to go to a game with me. It's been a long time since I've seen him in person."
"Years?"
"Yeah, something like that," A half-hearted shrug was all you would give him before you grabbed his hand, "We should get going. The tour's gonna start soon."
Despite your verbal blunder, you still managed to have a good time — even though you were hardly paying attention to the sights and scenery around you, too distracted by Langdon's pretty-boy looks to be fully dialed into the experience. How could you been, when your heart skipped a beat every time he smiled at the tour guide and nodded along to every word they said, squeezing your hand all the while?
And, best of all, he didn't let go of your hand until you both headed back to his car.
"That was really fun."
"Yeah, it was." You ruffled your hair nervously, staring at how easily your fingers intertwined with his. Maybe you were gawking because of how easy and natural it felt to hold his hand… who knows? "I know I've already taken up a lot of your time for the day–"
"–I want to be here," Langdon paused as he locked eyes with you, making sure that these words reverberated through your soul, "with you."
"I want that too." You said as an utterly embarrassing confession spilled forth. "I really like you, Frank."
"I really like you too."
No word besides giddy could capture your facial expression at that very moment.
"It seems we have that in common," You were grinning before the words came out, "perhaps I could use that to convince you to stop somewhere for a late lunch? It'll be my treat."
"Consider me convinced." Langdon wore a smirk that you were tempted to kiss off of his face, given your close proximity, but you chose to brush past him.
His fingers twitched, trying to chase after you as you let go of your hand.
The idea was to stop somewhere between Fremont and Pittsburgh for a meal, but you saw a mini golf sign about fifty miles out and had to run your mouth about being an expert at a sport that you are infamous for being terrible at. So much so that your college friends — Natalie, you should just say Natalie because that's who you're referencing here — used to bet on how far you'd go over par since you often did so.
Your record over par for an eighteen-hole mini golf course is twenty-seven.
"Nervous?" Langdon's voice snaps you out of your thoughts, causing you to quickly realize that you've been staring off into space for an absurdly long amount of time. "I thought you said you were the best at–"
"–I lied." God, you don't know what compels you to endlessly spill your guts to this man, but you need to get a hold of yourself before you royally screw this up. "Maybe I like to throw a little pomp and circumstance into my daily conversations. Sue me."
"You need a hand?"
Your pride nearly speaks for you first, offended that he'd say such a thing to you when you were well and fully capable of hitting the goddamn ball into the fucking hole; however… you can work this in your favor. Not in terms of the match — you knew Frank was gonna send your ass packing the moment you picked out your ball and club — but in more… interesting fields.
"Sure." You shrug. "But I have to warn you — I am bad at this. Very bad."
"Like, 'You're gonna miss the hole' bad, or 'I should duck and run for cover' bad?" Langdon asks, an amused smile on his face as you grimace.
"The second one."
"I guess I have to take my chances, then," He steps onto the green, and you barely stop yourself from smacking your head on the faux grass face-first when he places a gentle hand on your waist, "your legs are too far apart."
Said no man ever.
You have to resist the urge to crack that joke as you allow Langdon to carefully move your left leg closer to your right one, so your thighs are barely touching.
"There you go. Just like that," He's gotta know what he's doing, saying such questionable things in a husky voice as he places a hand on top of yours before he helps you do a few practice swings. "Use the line on the club to aim so you don't shoot your eye out."
"A Christmas Story, huh?" You catch the reference before you throw another right at him, if only to override the hammering of your heart against your ribcage. "Don't worry, Happy Gilmore's got this."
Langdon snorts with laughter as you smack your ball with the club, sending it right into the hole without any difficulties at all.
"Yes!" You cheer, giving him an enthusiastic high-five before you retrieve your ball from the hole. "Shit, there might be hope for me after all."
"You're no Arnold Palmer, but you'll get there." His encouragement warms your heart and your face as you place your hand on his forearm, allowing him to guide you to the next hole.
"Thank you, oh wise– Fuck!" You let out an ungodly shriek when you stumble forward after catching your foot on the stone perimeter that divides the green course from the walkway that winds through the fenced-off, enclosed area.
"You good?" Langdon's hand, once placed upon your back, was firmly wrapped around your middle as he pulled you to his chest.
"Peachy." You groan, thoroughly embarrassed by your inability to walk, all of a sudden. "I must be an emergency doctor's wet dream with the way I manage to hurt myself on a semi-regular basis…"
You are speed-running the worst things to say and do on a first date. Congratu-fucking-lations.
"That was really inappropriate. I'm so–"
Frozen solid, words fail you when you feel Langdon's chest shake with joyous laughter that echoes around your immediate area.
"–you're cute," It's a clipped compliment from him, but it still manages to make your face hot despite its brevity, "are you sure you're–?"
"–Yes, Doctor, I'm fine." You try to hide your nervousness by pulling away from Langdon, but he catches your arm to stop you from running away. "I promise I'm okay. I'm just really nervous about fucking this up because I really, really like you, and it's making me act stupid."
So much for trying to keep your mouth shut when it comes to him.
"I like you." He plainly states, noting your lack of response before he clarifies further. "I like you because you're real. You say what's on your mind, even when you think it'll make you look stupid — and you're not stupid, by the way."
"Thanks." With your cheeks flushed, your hand slithers up his arm until you're able to squeeze his bicep. "That means a lot, coming from you."
"You're welcome."
The two of you stare at each other for what should be an uncomfortably long amount of time, but you feel no sense of urgency in rushing past this — in rushing past him.
Langdon's hand meets your waist. You don't pull away.
He moves closer. You still don't pull away.
You'd like to hold onto more of him, but the golf club and golf ball that you're juggling in your other hand prevent you from doing so; however, you catch him off-guard by pressing your lips to his.
Langdon likes you. This dorky version of you that stumbles over their own words and the pavement beneath their feet, makes inappropriate jokes at the most inopportune of times, and wants to be there with him.
…Forget wanting to be there with him — you want him.
It's nice to see Langdon flustered for once as you back away from him, and you wear a cocky grin that's quickly wiped off of your face when he dives in for another kiss.
You pocket your golf ball before you throw your club to the ground, eliciting a breathy chuckle from Langdon that you happily devour with your mouth. You're honestly unsure of where to touch him — you'd like him to touch you all over, but you're not sure that he wants the same for you — so you settle for a hand over his heart, hoping that his heart is beating as hard as yours is.
You're happy to report that it is. It's hammering along to a steady beat that's a little faster than yours, but his heart is still beating hard against his chest.
"Wow," Breathless, you finally break from him, wiping the spit from your mouth that connects your lips to his, "I guess you really do like me, huh?"
"You guess?" Langdon runs a shaky hand through his hair. "I can't leave you guessing, can I?"
"Nope." You answer, diving in for yet another greedy kiss.
It's a modern miracle that the two of you manage to finish the eighteen holes of golf that you paid for, but neither of you are really paying attention to the scores because you're too busy being distracted by each other. Whether it's Langdon's hand accidentally brushing against your hips or thighs, or you throwing taunts and flirtatious comments his way right before he putts, you're both doing the work to make sure that the other knows that you are interested. Very, very interested.
You would've liked to have an impromptu make-out session in the back of Langdon's car, but you get a few kisses in and you're reminded of being sixteen, drinking too much alcohol, and fooling around with a guy that you really didn't like all that much. He certainly didn't hold a candle to Langdon, but you couldn't force that memory out of your mind, so you decided to speak up for yourself.
"Sorry, sorry…" You placed a hand on his chest, and his eyes snapped up to meet yours, "I want to do this, but not here."
"Don't apologize for standing up for yourself," Langdon took your hand and brought it up to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss to your knuckles, "we can wait–"
"–Can we go back to your place?" You asked. "I'd offer to go to mine, but Nat's gonna be there and I don't need her to be in my business right now. Freeloading spectators really kill the mood, y'know?"
"Are you sure?" He murmured. "I won't rush you."
"You're not rushing me, Frank," His name finally comes from your mouth, alongside a small kiss to the corner of his, "I promise. I prefer a bed after the first date."
"And after that?"
"Ah, you think you've already secured a second date," You teased, taking a small pause for dramatic effect, "and you'd be correct."
Langdon slipped his right hand into yours on the drive back to Pittsburgh, and he didn't let go of you until he had to park the car. You don't recognize this neighborhood — you probably should, since you've lived here for years, but you still get a little lost when you're off of the main roads in Pittsburgh — but the apartment building that he leads you into looks a lot like yours.
You said you were going to wait until you got into Langdon's apartment to go any further, but the temptation to have him is too strong, so you're only able to wait until the elevator closes to pounce on him.
Devouring the small whine that he lets out of his mouth, you thoroughly enjoy pinning him to the back of the elevator as your hands slowly slide up his shirt.
"Are you uncomfortable?" You ask, fingers drumming against muscle as you watch him nervously swallow.
"No," He whispers, "not with you."
"Good." You say before you kiss him with more power and dominance this time.
Somehow, Langdon manages to slowly walk the two of you out of the elevator once you arrive on the desired floor. You're the one who's at a disadvantage as he places a hand around your waist, keeping you close to him as he unlocks the door to his place.
Soft laughter escapes you as the door is slammed shut behind you — Fuck, does it feel good to have your own want for someone mirrored back onto you, for once — but you're quickly silenced when his lips meet yours again and again and again.
Fingers dance against hems, but you lack the reservation that you previously displayed this morning through the early evening as you trace the hidden muscle underneath his shirt.
"I need you, Frank." You whisper in-between kisses, catching the mirth and affection that drips from his gaze. "Badly."
"Where?"
"Is everywhere an option?" You joke, feeling him smile against your mouth before he sinks his teeth into your bottom lip. With a small whine, you open your mouth to him. "Ah–"
"–where?" He repeats with a soft sternness that compels you to answer him. Not because you feel like you have to in order to get off, but because you want to. Because he wants you to.
You don't answer with words — you quite literally cannot, since his tongue is freely roaming inside of your mouth — so you places his hand in the middle of your chest before you guide it down, down, down.
"Thank you," Langdon's genuine thankfulness is one hell of a drug and a turn-on as two of his fingers apply pressure to your sex, "Let me make you feel good. Please."
And who would you be to say no to that?
~
"Pay me the two-hundred dollars you owe me, bitch!"
"No! Absolutely not! You're a dirty fucking cheater!"
You've, somehow, waltzed into the most intense Monopoly game possible as Kayla and Nat glare at each other from opposite sides of the kitchen table.
"Hey–"
"–Nope." You avoid that argument like the plague as you toss two beer bottles into the trash. Kayla's normally cool and level-headed, but board games bring out a different beast that you're not eager to provoke. Not after she chewed your ass out for an hour for throwing back-to-back draw fours at her during a heart-stopping round of Uno. "Pretend like I'm not even here."
Truly, all you wanted to do was grab another round of beers for you and Jack for the night before you disappeared into the comfort of your bedroom, but these two would make that mission impossible. Especially when Nat notices the wet hair that clings to your face and neck.
"Eager to get back to your shower?" She teases as you throw a middle finger her way, expecting her to tease you before the words come out of her mouth. "Oh, I bet the two of you have some fun underneath that running water."
You are not giving Nat the satisfaction of knowing that her teasing was close to the truth. You didn't have shower sex; instead, you took a shower right after you slept with him.
"Pay Kayla the money you owe her." You deadpan as you prop the fridge door open with your hip.
"Awww, did I strike I nerve?" Nat talks in a mocking baby voice as Kayla takes the opportunity to swipe two fake hundred-dollar bills from under Nat's nose. "Hey, I didn't agree to pay you!"
"But I took it anyways." Kayla smirks. "Capitalism's a bitch, ain't it?"
"Viva la revolution, motherfucker." Nat shoots back before she leans back in her chair. "Hey, do you mind–"
She pauses when you calmly set the beer on the table.
"–are you available for marriage?"
"You gonna buy me that big, shiny diamond ring I asked for?" You tease. "Twenty-four karats with a gold band; otherwise, I'm dumping your ass."
"Expensive taste," Nat bemoans before a light smile plays on her face, "plus, I'd have to get Dr. Day and Dr. Night's blessings–"
"–will you stop it with the fucking nicknames?!?" You hiss underneath your breath. "You are not subtle."
"Why don't you let me have any fun?" She crinkles her nose as she unscrews the beer cap with three fingers. "I like those ones. Actually, that's what they're saved in my phone as."
"You're joking," You say before Nat hands her phone to you, and your mouth hangs open in shock when you see the contact names for Jack and Frank, "Oh, you are not joking."
"Why would I? I'm a straight shooter–"
"–except when you owe me money in a board game." Kayla goes in for the snipe, causing Nat to slam her hand down on the table.
"I don't give my wealth to swindlers!" Nat reaches over and grabs her money back from Kayla's absurdly large pile of fake money. "Swiper, no swiping!"
"Are you quoting Dora the Explorer at me?" Kayla's genuinely befuddled as steam comes out of your best friend's ears.
"I'm upset! My references are shit when I'm pissed!"
"Then get good!" Kayla prods.
"Fuck you!"
"Yeah, I will!"
Nope, nope, nope, I get enough of this when I hear them through the walls.
While they're engaged in what can only be described as the oddest, angriest form of foreplay that you've had the displeasure of witnessing, you manage to catch Jack's amused gaze from across the room, which stirs a warm affection in your heart.
God, I hope he didn't hear that bit about Dr. Night and Dr. Day… that's so embarrassing!
"You get dinner and a show tonight." You joke as you move past the arguing pair. "Consider yourself lucky."
"Lucky?" Jack questions, a smile teasing his lips as you hand him a beer. "So they just happen to start arguing when I come over?"
"Well, when they're not arguing, they're…" Your face flushes as you throw your head back, allowing the alcohol to slowly travel down your throat, "That's not the point. You could've waited in my bedroom."
"I didn't want to," He counters, "I missed you."
"You saw me five minutes ago," You playfully roll your eyes before you press a swift, loving kiss to his cheek, "and you were inside of me less than an hour ago. Cool it."
"That's what I missed about you–"
"–Jack Abbot!" You pinch some skin on Jack's bicep before you pull him closer, only for a proper kiss on his lips. You melt against him rather easily, placing a hand on his broad chest as he eliminates any potential space between you two with a gentle hand wrapped around your back. God, it's hard to not miss him when he treats you like you're the most valuable thing in the world. "Not in front of them, okay?"
"Sorry," He quietly says, but you both know he doesn't fully mean it as he kisses your mouth as an extra apology, "You okay?"
"Yeah, I'm good," You whisper back, happy to let the rest of the world disappear when you're with him, "Fuck, Jack, I missed you too. I can't get enough of you."
"Neither can I." Jack agrees before he greedily pulls you inside of your bedroom, slowly pinning you to the door once he sets his bottle, alongside yours, on your nearby dresser. His hand goes to the back of your head, carefully cradling your skull so you don't hurt yourself. "Come stay with me."
Your eyebrows furrow.
"I was planning on coming over this weekend–"
"–permanently." Jack interrupts you as he adjusts the hem of your t-shirt with his other hand, pulling it downwards because he knows that you don't like to show your stomach unless you must.
"Just us?" You softly ask, placing a hand upon his cheek so your thumb can brush against his stubble.
"Yeah, just us," He pauses, "It'd be nice."
"It would." You thickly swallow, trying to decide how to answer that question.
You love Jack Abbot — even if you haven't said so yet — and you'd love nothing more than to wake up in his arms every single day, but there's a wrench in those domestic plans of his.
A Frank Langdon-sized wrench.
Perhaps it was in poor taste to go on small dates and have casual sex with Frank Langdon because there wasn't an established relationship between you and Jack, but it wasn't like you were seeing every man who gave you an ounce of an attention. It was just Jack and Frank. No more, no less.
Shit, how could you want more when you have two doting, attentive men to cater to your every whim and need?
You don't exactly know how to bring this up to Jack — because 'Hey, honey, I've been seeing someone else on the side for two months!' hardly seems like a good response — so you've been stewing on this for a while. Honestly, you're surprised that this whole thing has been kept under wraps for this long. Besides the occasional stray comment from Nat or Kayla about an Eiffel Tower, no one else knew about what you were doing in the free time.
Or, more accurately, who you were doing in your free time.
"Uh," You have an internal debate about coming clean, but you hold back your confession for another time. You'll tell Jack of Frank, and Frank of Jack, when the time is right… which is not right now, "can I have some time to think about it?"
You would agree, under different circumstances, but it'd be hard to explain to Jack why you were leaving the house on a Thursday night, dressed to the nines to meet Frank at a restaurant or bar before you went back to his place for some of the best sex that you've had in your life.
I shouldn't lie, but I don't want to end things with Frank. I just need a little more time to figure out how I'm gonna bring this up to them. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings…
He kisses your lips, humming in soft agreement before he completely backs off of you.
"Do you want me to leave?"
If Jack's goal is to kill you with sweet, gentle, loving kindness, he's on the right track.
"No," You desperately reach out for him, bringing his hand to your heart once you make contact, "Don't go. I don't want you to go."
"I won't." He calmly reassures you. "I'm here for you."
Guilt gnaws on your heart as you lead Jack back to your bed — a bed that's covered in twisted sheets and pillows haphazardly thrown to the side from your earlier amorous encounter. You hadn't bothered to put everything back in its place because you'd be sleeping soon anyways… or continuing what you started earlier. That, however, seemed like a less attractive offer than falling asleep, curled up next to Jack, so you forgo any foreplay and warp your arms around his neck before you press a sleepy kiss to his lips.
"I love you, Jack," You mumble, not fully realizing what you've said until you feel his body heat up from your admission, "I don't want you to think that I'm hesitating because I don't love you. I do, and it's–"
"–I love you too."
A breath of relief escapes you when you realize that Jack loves you as much as you love him. You've been sitting on those words for ages, like a ticking time bomb, and they were destined to come out sooner or later. This is your chance to say something poetic, or romantic or—
"Really?"
—utterly fucking stupid is also an option, too. A dumber option, but an option nonetheless.
"You want me to take it back?" He jokes, cracking a light smile that spreads onto your face as well.
"No, of course not, I just… I don't know," You're rambling as you admire the boxer and t-shirt combo that Jack's wearing as pajamas, "I was scared. I know I'm super awesome and cool and I connect with people really, really easily, but this — letting someone this close to me — is hard."
"Why?"
"I wish I could give you a simple answer," His lips grace your forehead as encouragement to keep talking, "Maybe it's because everyone who's gotten this close has left by now."
"I'm not going anywhere," With two steady hands, Jack helps you into bed before he grabs your long-forgotten beers, "not unless you plan on kicking me out."
"In your dreams, Abbot," You shoot back, grabbing your drink from his hands before he kisses both of your temples, "You're stuck with me for the long haul."
"And I wouldn't have it any other way." He says, causing you to frown in response. "What?"
"Your line was: 'There's no place I'd rather be then with you'."
You giggle when Jack gives you his classic are-you-fucking-with-me glance, paired with raised eyebrows, before you lure him into bed with a quick, fleeting kiss to his jawline.
The rest of your night is spent in silence as the two of you finish your beers and get ready for bed. Sleep comes quickly — it always does when you have a warm body next to you, limbs wrapped up in your own — but you're still conscious enough to answer a question that Jack throws your way.
"Dr. Night, huh?" He plays with your hair as you bury your face in his neck.
"Another Nat-ism," You mumble, tempted to let sleep overtake you because you're so comfortable and warm, "ignore her."
"Who's Dr. Day?"
"Who?" You slowly repeat. "Never heard of him."
"Does he work–"
"–nope," You hastily answer, "Good night, Jack. I love you."
"Nice try," You feel his lips curl upwards as he presses a kiss to the crown of your head, "Good night, sweetheart."
~
"Is that Natalie?"
"Oh my God, Frank, don't wave at her!" You groan as you adjust your date-night outfit, watching your roommate grab Kayla by the collar before she stomps over to you. "She's nosy. Be ready for a shakedown."
"I already got a shakedown in that hospital room after you left," Frank chuckles, fingers circling the rim of his martini glass in a hypnotic motion that makes your face flush, "this can't be much worse–"
"–be afraid. Be very afraid." You warn, lips pulling upwards into a teasing smile as you take a sip of your drink. You remember the grilling Nat gave Jack when she found out that the two of you were seeing each other, and it was, for a lack of better words, not pretty. "You got the pre-first-date screening. This is something else entirely."
"Hey," Nat gives you a cute wave before she winks at you, interrupting Frank before he can respond to your warning, "fancy running into you here."
You told her where you were going tonight. This is not a fucking coincidence.
"Yeah, fancy that," You purse your lips, blowing a stray hair out of your face, "I like your outfit. It matches your sparkling personality."
Nat, in response, does a little shoulder shake that allows the lights situated around the bar to reflect on her dress, which is covered in flashy sequins.
"Thanks. You look good when you put in a little effort."
"Nat–" You bite your tongue, if only to prevent any foul language from coming out of your mouth in front of your date. God forbid you go out on a Thursday night to a nice bar, have a couple of drinks at a high top table with a doctor that you definitely have the hots for, and then go back to his place and have far too much fun exploring each other's bodies. "–thanks for the backhanded compliment."
"They're my specialty," Then, her attention goes to Frank as Kayla eagerly watches this all go down, not saying a word as she silently supports her girlfriend with a hand on Nat's shoulder, "so, Doctor Langdon–"
"–Frank–"
"–Doctor Langdon," Nat doesn't even give Frank a chance to say more than his name before she interrupts him, "I've heard a lot about you."
"Have you?" He raises an inquisitive eyebrow your way, causing you to shrug.
"She's my best friend. If I don't tell her everything, she'll waterboard it out of me." You deadpan as Nat eagerly nods.
"Uh-huh, and if that doesn't work, I've got medieval torture techniques up my sleeve," She seems to take a great pleasure in watching Frank's smile falter at that not-so-hidden threat, "Listen, I'll keep it brief, since I kinda went on a tangent the last time I gave this speech."
Ah, yes, poor Jack was stuck dealing with Nat's antics for over two hours. You were terrified at first, but he matched wits with her as well as you could. You felt terrible about the verbal lashing that Jack got, but he seemed to take it in stride. Especially when he managed to win her over with the charm that had you head over heels for him from the beginning.
"If you fuck with my best friend, I will fuck you up." She hisses at Frank, and you pull her back before she can take a bite out of him.
"Easy, Killer, I can handle myself." You joke to break up the tension between your quartet. "If Frank wasn't good to me, I wouldn't keep seeing him."
"But those other guys you dated–"
"–I was young, dumb, and looking for approval in all of the wrong places." You explain, and Nat appears to be momentarily satisfied by that answer as she backs off. "Thank you for your concern, Natalie, but I'm alright. Even if I wasn't, sometimes you gotta let me make my own decisions."
"Even if they're dumb?" Nat quietly asks before you grin at her.
"Especially if they're dumb. How else am I gonna learn?"
"Through my everlasting wisdom?" She quips before you snort. "Hey, I am very smart! You could learn a thing or two from me."
"I know you are," You reach out and rub her back in support, "Please don't chew off Frank's head. I kinda like it how it is."
"Fine." Nat rolls her eyes before she places her hands on her hips, turning towards Frank once more. "You should come over sometime. I make a mean lasagna."
"Uh…" Obviously, he's a little confused on how this conversation went from a verbal smack-down to a friendly invitation to dinner, but he's persuaded to accept by your warm smile, "Yeah, I'd like that."
"We should do it this weekend." Nat suggests, wearing a smug smile when you suddenly freeze up.
Shit, shit, shit.
Natalie knows that you go over to Jack's place every weekend, but this weekend would be different. Jack asked you if you wanted to go on a little trip this weekend, since he had the whole weekend off, to your surprise. He was planning to go by himself, as he had the room booked and everything, but he said he wouldn't mind you tagging along, if you wanted to.
And, boy, did you want to. Forty-eight hours of uninterrupted time with the Jack Abbot? It was a no-brainer!
Now, Natalie is trying to throw a wrench in your lovely weekend plans by getting Frank involved. Isn't that–
"–Sorry, I'll have to take a rain check," Frank jumps in before you have the opportunity to do so, "I'm busy."
Ah, he probably has his kids this weekend, and it's understandable that he'd want to spend time with them over you. No biggie. You can have your romantic getaway with Jack after you get this date with Frank back on track.
"Maybe we can do sometime next week, then?" You propose before Nat hums in agreement.
"Yeah, I'll have them send you the details," She turns to leave, but not before she quietly drops this onto you, "I'm trying to get you that threesome. You could be a little more receptive–"
"–I did not ask for you and the rest of Mystery Inc. to solve the case of my love life, Natalie." You angrily whisper back. "Stay out of my business."
"I'm more of a Winchesters girl, but I'll back off," She taps Kayla's shoulder, who shoots you a wink that lets you know that they're both meddling in your affairs, "Have a good night, Frank. See you soon!"
You and Frank both let out a breath of relief when your terror of a best friend disappears into the back of the bar.
"You weren't joking." Frank says as you take a long sip of your drink.
"Nat's… intense, at times," You feel bad, and your hand comes to rest over his, "And you don't have to come over if you're uncomfortable–"
"–I want to know more about you," Frank's words make your heart pound, "I'm serious about you. About this."
You are, too, but you've got some shit to work out first. You really gotta come clean to Jack and Frank before this entire thing implodes in your face.
"I'd like that. I'd really like that," You grin at him before you notice the lack of liquid in your glass, "but first, I think we need a round of drinks after that mess."
~
"You can't tell me that you haven't thought about it."
"Nat," You're firm with her as you fix your hair for the umpteenth time this afternoon, "stop it. You fantasize about this more than I do."
"So you have thought about it!" Nat screeches her gotcha moment into the air as she tugs on the sleeve of your outfit. "Okay, okay, walk me through it. Who's in the front, and who's in the back?"
"NATALIE!" You smack her hand, without any of your usual reservation, and she howls in pain before she pouts at you. "Knock it off."
"But whyyyy?" She draws out her question. "Teasing you is so much fun!"
"You are a professional menace." You groan before you decide to throw your immature best friend a bone. "Okay, y'know what? Fine. I have thought about it, with a vibrator in hand–"
"–Ewww." Nat makes a face that causes you to scoff. "Why would you tell me that?"
"You've told me about your extensive strap collection! Do you think I wanted to know about that?"
"You asked. I did not," Nat clarifies, "I don't want to know what you do with your rose toy at night!"
"Who says it was a rose toy?" You tease before Nat gags. "Jesus Christ, Nat, I'm fucking with you."
"You're an ass," She says before a wicked grin appears on her face, "and I'd rather you fuck me than fuck with me."
"Don't threaten me with a good time," You shoot back before you back away from the mirror in your bathroom, "You need something from me?"
"Nah," She shakes her head before she looks back at the small suitcase that's sitting open on your bed, "it's just… been a long time since I've been by myself."
"Kayla's not coming over?" You slide past Nat as you walk into your room, "I thought you two would take advantage of me not–"
"–she's not coming over," She whispers with a shaky breath, "we got into a fight."
"About what?" You drop the light-hearted conversation as your gaze hardens. "When? Kayla was here last night."
"Over text, and it was probably stupid," Nat deflates, and you're deeply concerned about her as you move the suitcase off of your bed, patting your mattress with your hand so she takes a seat next to you, "I don't know. I said things I didn't meant, and it went really, really badly."
"Nat," Your hand goes to her back once she takes a seat next to you, and your heart squeezes in clear distress when she leans into your touch, "I'll stay with you for the weekend. Jack will understand–"
"–No." She shakes her head in defiance. "I don't want you to ruin your plans because of me."
"I'm not ruining my plans, I'm taking care of my best friend when she's having a rough time." You correct Nat before you wrap your arm around her form, giving her a warm side-hug. "I want to be here for you, Nat. Let me in."
"…Fine." Nat's head goes to your shoulder as she talks. "We're not exclusive, but I saw a picture of Kayla making out with another girl, and it upset me."
Your stomach twists as you nod along — is that what you have in store for Jack or Frank when you tell one of the other?
Get your head out of your ass. This isn't about you right now. Be a good friend, and solve your relationship bullshit at another time.
"Did you two talk about being exclusive?" You ask, your mouth drying out all the while.
"We did. Multiple times." Nat's answers help soothe your own worries as you play with a few strands of her long hair. "I love her, I do, but…"
"Relationships are complicated and they suck at times," You say, trying to comfort her, "You'll work through this if you both want to stay together; otherwise, you can find someone who wants the same things at you."
"So your advice is to break up or stay together?" She pinches the bridge of her nose. "Thanks, Dr. Phil."
"Is that not the two options every couple faces when they reach a rough patch?" You shrug. "Listen, I don't want to trivialize your pain. You feel what you feel, and you're allowed to feel betrayed. As long as you express that in a healthy manner, then–"
"–I didn't. I lashed out, and I said some really nasty shit." Nat murmurs.
"Apologize and have an honest conversation about how you're both feeling," You offer a suggestion that Nat nods in agreement with, "I can be here with you when you–"
"–No, God no. I don't need you to babysit me," Nat's eyes shine with the threat of tears, "Just… I don't want you to move out."
"I'm not–"
"–I heard you and Jack on the phone a few nights ago," Her voice strains with every word, "you're thinking about it."
"I haven't accepted it," You remind her, "and if you want me to live with you, until we're both dead and gone, then I will."
"You promise?"
"Yes, Natalie, I promise," You smile at your best friend, "You're my best fucking friend. If you jumped off a bridge, I would also jump off of a bridge."
"…Please don't jump off any bridges." Nat quietly whispers before you both laugh. "You'd seriously turn down Jack for me?"
"Yeah, I would. Best friends over boyfriends, always." You can't help but tease Natalie once you see her begin to crack a smile. "Besides, I could always see if I could get you a mother-in-law suite at Jack's place–"
"–Fuck you, bitch." Nat spits out, with no real bite, before she finally hugs you back. "You should get going. I don't want you snooping in my business when I invite Kayla over so we can talk things out."
"Are you sure?" You ask. "I can always–"
"–No, you need to go." She suddenly places a lot of pressure on you as she stands before she throws your suitcase back onto the bed. "You'll regret it if you don't."
"You think?" You scrunch your nose at her. "It's one weekend. How much could change in forty-eight hours?"
"I don't know," Nat smugly says, "You should find out."
"Did Jack say something to you about what he's got planned?" You frown when Nat has no response. "Natalie–"
"–you'll have fun. Too much fun." She winks at you before you stare at her in utter confusion. What the fuck is she talking about? What insider information does she have? "Can I help you pack?"
"I swear to God…" You say through gritted teeth before you let your brief stint of anger go. "Sure, but we're gonna go out for ice cream before I leave. Then, if you promise to keep me in the loop with you and Kayla, I'll go."
"I'm gonna make out with you." Nat bluntly says.
"Please don't."
"With tongue." Her eyebrows wiggle before she lunges at you, and you shriek in horror before you throw a few piece of clothing from your suitcase at her to dissuade her from continuing her pursuit.
"Get off of me!" You yell when she bear hugs you before she presses a loud smooch to your cheek.
"God, you are such a baby. You don't complain when Jack or Frank kisses you like this." Nat whines as you roll your eyes.
"That's different–"
"–Oh, uh-huh, I'm sure it is." She merrily giggles after you flip her off. "Awww, that's cute."
"Shut up and help me pack." You grumble.
"Then ice cream?"
You can't help but laugh at her excitement.
"Yes, then ice cream."
Nat might not be the neatest packer in the world, but she sure is efficient when she's promised a reward after all of her hard work. She's not subtle, either — you clock the condoms that she tries to sneak into your suitcase immediately after offering to help you — but you appreciate her assistance nonetheless.
You weren't planning on leaving this early, but you woke up far too early, with too much energy and excitement about your weekend getaway, so you got ready far ahead of schedule. As luck would have it, Nat helped you occupy your early afternoon with a friendly date to her favorite ice cream spot… where she proceeded to spill a shit-ton of whipped cream onto her black top. Go figure.
After you consoled her through that mess, and repeatedly asked her if she wanted you around this weekend when you were still worried about her potentially being alone this weekend, Nat shooed you off with a teasing remark that you wouldn't question until after tonight's events.
"Go get 'em, tiger!"
(You'd later realize that there were a lot of things you should've questioned about that day… all of which would've helped prevent what happened next.)
You drove off into the literal sunset, watching as the skyscrapers around you slowly shrunk into mid-sized houses that were evenly spaced out, rather than cramped into every nook and cranny possible. You weren't going too far — just a little ways out from Pittsburgh, to a hotel on the border of the city — but it's been a while since you left the city by yourself.
In fact, you can't recall the last time you went on a solo adventure that wasn't in Pittsburgh. You'd have to go back to the times of your youth — times you'd rather not recall, tainted by your parents' disapproval of you — to remember such an occasion.
But you won't be alone for long. You'll have Jack by your side, and isn't that something to celebrate?
You should've pushed him on why he chose a hotel that was only a thirty-minute drive from where you lived, but you were too over-the-moon to think about anything other than some time away from a stressful job and a too-damn-nosy-for-her-own-good best friend.
Well, you are thinking of something else as you pull into the hotel parking lot with Old Reliable, your trusty ride since your high school days. You should consider getting a new ride, but this car's got a lot of good memories attached to it. Bad ones, too, but they're eclipsed by mid-afternoon, off-key karaoke sessions and three-in-the-morning drives with no destination in mind. This car's gotten you through a lot, and it's gonna help you get through this.
You've been hemming and hawing over telling Jack about what you've been up to — and who you've been with — every Thursday night for the past two months, and, with Nat's current predicament fresh in your mind, you feel like you owe him a bit of transparency. Perhaps it was shitty of you to hide this for two months, but you gotta come clean sooner, rather than later. If you didn't do it to relieve your heart of its constant ache and your mind of its endless worries, then you'd be honest for Jack's sake, and accept the consequences as they may come.
This isn't exactly identical to Nat's situation — oddly enough, exclusivity and relationship boundaries weren't something you ever discussed with Jack — but you don't want it to end that way. You can be a mature adult and own up to your fuck-up. Even if it hurts you.
You send a quick text to Jack, notifying him that you're here as your fingers twitch in nervous anticipation. You were thinking about launching this nuke on Sunday, but you've now decided that you should probably say something as soon as possible. That way, you can turn around and try to figure out what to do with your life now that you've imploded one of the best things to happen to you in the past year.
You made your bed. Now lay in it.
The chiming of your phone makes your heart pound, and you worry that your thoughts may have slipped through your fingers until you realize that he just sent you the room number in response.
Well, at least you've got your limbs under control. Your mind's an uncontrollable mess, flashing through all five stages of grief before you even climb out of your car to retrieve your suitcase from the backseat.
Be honest. Don't excuse your behavior, and listen to Jack. If he wants you to go, then go. No fighting, no arguing, no begging him to change his mind.
God, you're terrified when you should be excited about this weekend.
A pit of dread settles in your stomach as you walk into the lobby at a snail's pace, and a kind front-desk attendant directs you to the elevator, where you press the up arrow and wait for the elevator door to open.
I've truly fucked this all up, haven't I?
Chewing on the inside of your cheek, you're thankful that no one else has to witness your pitiful state as a shaky hand of yours extends and hits the button that'll take you up to the third floor. You can't help but pace in the elevator, trying to decide how to break this to Jack.
Should I be direct? Do I try to ease him into it? What do I even say to him?
Sooner than you'd like, the elevator doors open to reveal an excited family with a young boy in his father's arms, and you quickly brush past them, luggage in hand, before they can question you or your distress.
Of course, the room you're looking for — Room 369 — is at the end of the hall, so you're forced to march down the hallway towards your doom. …You're exaggerating, obviously, but this certainly isn't a pleasant experience.
Once you reach your destination, your fist rises to knock against the door before you notice that it's already cracked open.
Oh, Jack must've left it open for me. That was nice of him.
Such a gesture only makes you feel worse, like you're undeserving of all of the kindness and affection that he's shown you thus far.
Still, you've come too far to turn back, so you decide to dance with destiny as you enter the hotel room.
You open the door as quietly as possible once you hear two distinct voices from deep inside the room. Unsurprisingly, Jack has once again pulled out all of the stops, and you can tell from the small foyer that you've enter that this is more like a mini-apartment than a hotel room. It's probably got a kitchen, a living room, a large bed, a hot tub…
Too bad you probably won't be around long enough to enjoy those things–
–Wait, two voices? Two people are in this hotel room? …What?
Maybe you're hearing the TV play in the background. Surely, that must be it.
You quickly realize that your previous assumption is very, very wrong when you can hear the two voices as clear as day as you walk further into the hotel room. You recognize one as Jack's — hearing his laughter makes your heart swell, and you hope you're given a chance to hear him laugh once more, especially after what you're about to tell him — but you don't quite place the other voice until you round the corner.
You really, really wish you did, though.
As soon as you enter the room, you realize that you don't have to worry about telling Frank about Jack, or vice versa.
Because Jack Abbot and Frank Langdon are standing in front of you.
…Uh-oh.
Think fast. Think really fucking fast.
"…Shit," Like a rat caught in a trap, you struggle with how to get out of this unexpected situation, "Umm… hi?"
You'd love for the floor to swallow you whole right now. Forget the embarrassment that you felt with your two trips to the ER — this is much, much worse.
Your hand tightens around the luggage handle instinctively, and you must look like you want to bolt out of there — and you really do, but your feet can't find their momentum, so you're glued to your current spot on the floor as the center of attention — because Jack and Frank both try to dissuade you from doing so.
"Wait–"
"–Don't."
Thank God you skipped out on the ice cream from your earlier outing with Natalie — if you had partaken, you'd definitely be spewing it onto the floor.
"I…" You can't begin to form a proper sentence when they're both looking at you, but you try to do so anyway, "Fuck, I'm sorry. I should've been honest from the beginning, with both of you, and I accept complete responsibility if you want to–"
Jack wears a warm smile that completely throws you off guard.
"–is that what you think this is?"
"Excuse me?" You blink in an owl-like manner that causes Frank to chuckle and shake his head. "Is this not like… a confrontation about me lying to both of you?"
"Lying?" Frank softly repeats. "You didn't lie. You just forgot to mention that you were seeing the night-shift attending–"
"–I really should've said something, Frank, and I'm–"
"–I'm not done," The gentle authority in his voice makes your mouth clamp shut on its own, "and you don't have to apologize to me."
Right. You remembered how he told you that he didn't like how you apologized over and over again for simply being yourself, and he decided to… creatively force that habit out of you… with his tongue running laps around your cunt.
"Right, well…" You'd normally curse yourself for being so awkward, but you don't think there's a better response than that to any of this, "floor's yours."
You hope that Jack might come in and say something, but no, he does not; in fact, he looks thoroughly amused by all of this.
"You look surprised," Frank notes, and you assume it's his polite way of telling you that you look like a nervous wreck until you catch the next phrase that comes out of his mouth, "you didn't think we were capable of sharing?"
Your brain short-circuits instantaneously.
Did I just… No, he didn't… Did he? What the fuck?
"Huh?" You are well and truly floored by what Frank just said. "Come again?"
You're losing your mind. You have to be, because there's no way–
"–Hey," Jack's voice, like always, is the lighthouse guiding through the sea of your most turbulent thoughts, "it's okay. You're okay."
"What. Is. Happening?" There isn't a word in the dictionary that can accurately describe how lost you are. This is not how you thought this conversation was going to go. "Jack, I don't understand. You should be mad."
"I'm not." His correction finally strikes a chord with you. He's not mad at you. Neither of them are. "Are you?"
"At you? No, of course not, I…" You trail off as you realize that your anger is completely directed at yourself. You're upset at the series of actions that you've taken, all of which have lead you to this very moment. "Ah."
God, you are such an idiot. A self-centered, panicky idiot who has somehow misread this entire situation.
"You wanna come in?" Frank asks.
You should probably say no.
You don't want to say no.
"Yeah, I do." You hesitate before you step into the living room-adjacent space, and a breath of pure relief escapes you when Jack takes a few steps forward before he wraps his arms around you. "I was so worried about what you might think of me. I thought you were going to dump me."
"Why would I do that?" He murmurs as his fingers trace gentle circles into your back. "You hiding someone else from me?"
"No, God no," You allow yourself to chuckle ever-so-slightly, "Two is plenty."
"You sure?"
"Jack," You whine his name as your nose scrunches in disapproval, "you are enjoying this far too much."
"I like to make you sweat a little," Jack pecks your cheek as your unruly heart continues to hammer on to an ever-quickening, invisible beat, "Drink?"
"Please." You don't mean to beg, but your small plea of distress elicits a round of laughter from the men you adore.
Maybe… I'm not fucked? …At least not in a bad way?
"Anything in particular?"
"Whatever you have is fine, I'm… not picky," You laugh at your horrible timing with that one-liner as Jack walks away from you, "Jesus, I am a wreck."
"If that's what you call a wreck…" Frank trails off, but you can tell that he's eyeing you up from across the room. "I'd hate to see what you look like you're put-together."
"Whatever." It feels good to joke, and the impending sense of doom in your chest finally gets the hint that this is not life or death as it slowly ebbs away as you speak with Frank. "I might not look like a wreck, but I feel like one."
"You aren't," That little reassurance from him makes you feel much, much better, "You're taking this better than I thought you would."
Don't make a dumb sex joke, don't make a dumb sex joke, don't–
"Me? Overreact?" You point to yourself as you park your luggage near the bedroom door. "That's absurd. I can be calm, collected, and stoic, when necessary."
Frank cracks a smile as you take a step closer to him.
"…You think you're stoic?"
"Hey, leave me alone!" You whine. "I didn't come here to get railed on."
Your word choice has never been poorer, you fear.
Fuck me…
Your thoughts, however? Those untameable little things just keep making things worse, don't they?
"I'm going mute." You groan. "Clearly, I can't handle a conversation around the two of you."
"We don't need to talk." Frank shrugs as you eyebrows rise ever-so-slightly.
"I'd argue otherwise," Finally, finally, you dare to move towards Frank before he throws an arm around your shoulder and guides you to the couch, "Can I ask how you two figured this out?"
"No," His quick response earns him a deadpan stare from you, "it's not my story to tell."
So it was Jack, then. Somehow, this does feel like something that he'd orchestrate.
"Fine. Keep your secrets." Your nose crinkles in gentle anger, but you have a pretty good guess on who would've done something like this.
Natalie, Natalie, Natalie… she thinks she's sooooo cute.
Or, it could've been a nosy co-worker of theirs that managed to connect the dots before Jack and Frank did. …Although, that scenario is much more embarrassing, considering that they'd be talking about you at work.
It doesn't matter. You're here, they're here — might as well make the most of it, no?
"I'm glad you're here, Frank." You calmly state, unsure of where to take this conversation next. "I want you here."
"I want you here," Frank repeats, his hand squeezing your shoulder as you both collapse on the couch, "as long as you want this."
"What does this entail, exactly?" You hum, intrigued by his vagueness.
"What do you want out of this?" Again, the spotlight is flipped onto you once more, and your stomach turns with something more pleasurable as Frank's fingers play with the collar of your shirt.
Oh, I've got plenty of ideas.
"You," Biting your tongue, you play a little coy — you might as well, since these two are dabbling in the art of fucking with you, "and Jack. At the same time."
"We can do that for you." Suddenly, you feel Jack's hands meet yours as he hands you a glass of one. A quick swig tells you that it's the expensive kind that you couldn't stop raving about when you and Jack went to a local winery on a double date with Nat and Kayla. "Good?"
Jack wears a shit-eating smile because he knows you approve, and that you've probably deduced the origins of the substance that swirls around the glass in your hands.
"Yeah," Your throat dries up when Jack occupies the seat next to you, and you're pinned between the two men that you adore with every bit of them, "it is."
You knock back half of the glass quite quickly as a comfortable silence wraps around the three of you, but you don't feel any sort of buzz that would help balance the nerves that are coursing through your veins.
They're both here. They want you, and they're willing to share.
What the fuck are you doing? Why aren't you riding one of them right fucking now?
With more fervor and excitement than you mean to, you set the wine glass on the coffee table in front of you before you turn to Frank and press your lips to his. His hand slides down to your waist, sending electrifying shivers down your spine as you fall further and further into him.
You melt when Jack's hand settles on your unoccupied hip, and you think that your body might explode with heat when he presses his chest against your back.
On a more adventurous night of self-pleasure, you might've imagined something like this, but it certainly didn't feel this good. But, of course, nothing could top the way Frank moans into your mouth after you allow him access into the space, or the way your body subtly shifts so you can grind against Jack's growing erection.
"Is this what you had in mind?" Jack softly teases you, but he then groans into your eardrum when your hips rock against his once more.
"No," You choose to be honest after Frank finally lets you get a little air, believing that it'll lead to the best outcome for you, "but this is so much better. I–"
You yelp when Frank pulls you onto his mouth before he kisses you with a bit more wild abandon then last time, if that's even possible.
"Let me take care of you," He mumbles into your mouth, in-between heady kisses that steal your breath from you, "just once. Please."
"Just once?" You ask with the previous knowledge that this man has never been able to stop at one orgasm when it came to eating you out. "Are you sure about– ah!"
You loudly moan when two of Frank's fingers sneak down and press against your sex, releasing a shockwave of uncontrollable pleasure all over your body.
"Need you. Bad." You change your tune instantaneously, cocky attitude falling to the side as you're nearly begging for him. "Please, Frank."
"Cute," He murmurs as his fingers circle your hole through your clothing, "You don't need to beg. I don't want you to beg. I want you to want this as badly as I do."
"I do." You bite your lip, deciding that you need to be tongue-fucked by Langdon right fucking now. "Bedroom?"
"Absolutely." With an urgency that makes your laughter bounce off of the walls of the hotel room, Frank drags you towards the bedroom once you climb off of him, and you're sure to grab Jack's hand so he isn't left behind.
You're surprised at how silent Jack's been, given that he usually can't shut his mouth when you're riding him. There's something oh-so-delightful about being praised endlessly as you take and take and take from a man that you love.
This tells you one of two things: one, he's meticulously studying how you and Frank interact in the bedroom before he gets involved, or two, he's got about a thousand different teasing comments stewing in his mind, and he can't decide on the one that'd be best for this situation.
Knowing Jack, however? It's both. Definitely both. The smirk he wears as he leans against the doorway gives him away, his eyes absorbing how you and Frank needily pull at each other's clothes with desperate hands that want nothing more than to reach bare yet beautiful flesh.
Eventually, you manage to get Frank's shirt off as his fingers, usually dexterous (and drool-worthy, since you think about riding them more often than you should), fumble around before he's able to remove the pants from your body. You find yourself shoving your tongue into his mouth, eagerly taking all of Frank that you can get as he places his hands on your hips and slowly backs you towards the king-sized bed.
You can tell how bad he wants you, from his shaking hands to the heat radiating off of his chest — a chest that you'd like to mark up and run your tongue all over for the hell of it — but what really gets you going is how gentle he is with you. Every movement is methodical and well-planned, even when Frank's trying to get you off as fast as possible, and he makes sure that you're positioned in a way that is comfortable and pleasurable for you.
You feel like he's driving you mad with desire, tempting you into tugging on a belt loop that's attached to Frank's pants as you try to direct his attention to where you need him the most. Your body aches with the need to be touched, savored, loved by another, and you wouldn't be surprised if your poor underwear were soaked by now as you sit upon the edge of the king-sized bed.
Who are you kidding? You were wet the minute both Jack and Frank touched you.
It takes everything in you not to laugh when Frank falls to his knees, and he hits the ground with a satisfying thud before your hands move up his body, landing upon his shoulders so you can lean in and kiss him one last time… for now.
"Demanding, are we?" Jack can't help but throw a teasing comment your way, grinning like an idiot when he watches Frank move your hands from his body before he reaches for your ankles.
Little moans find their way out of your mouth as his fingers dig deep into the tender, often abused and forgotten muscles that lie underneath the surface of the skin before he curls his fingers around your ankles. He then throws your legs over his shoulders with a small grunt out of your mouth afterwards.
"I don't mind," Frank murmurs, lightly tapping your inner thigh with two of his fingers, so as to keep your attention on him, "I like it when they think they're in control."
It's almost like they already discussed what they were going to do to me before I arrived–
"–get out of your head, sweetheart."
Jack knows you all too well, causing you to huff in response.
"You don't know what's going on in my head," Your nose scrunches as he slowly makes his way over to the bed as you wiggle your hips, helping Frank remove your soaked underwear from your body, "To be honest, I don't think you'd want to, since it's a madhouse up there–"
"–but I know you," Jack's words cause your heart to pound in your eardrums, and you know you're done for when you feel Frank's hot breath on your cunt before he presses messy, open-mouthed kisses to your thighs, "Relax. We'll take care of you."
You hum before your lips curl up, a dangerous idea entering your mind before it exits via your mouth.
"What if I can't relax?" You challenge. "You're gonna help me out, right?"
Jack cockily smiles, carefully sitting next to you before he places a gentle, reassuring hand on your shoulder.
"I'm sure I could think of something that would help you out," He leans in, causing you to wear a smile that matches his, "or, you could tell me what you–"
You interrupt Jack with a well-timed kiss that catches him off-guard. His deep laughter echoes around the inside of your mouth before you swallow it whole, praying you don't choke on the sound so you can fully enjoy what they've got planned for you.
One of Jack's hands goes to your face, to gently brush away any stray hair before it lands on your cheek, and the other goes to your bare thigh, prying your legs even farther apart for Frank, who seems to be growing more impatient with every passing moment as he halts his affectionate assault on your legs before his gaze refocuses on your hole once more.
"This is better than what I had planned." Jack quietly admits, which pulls some laughter from you. "Feeling good?"
"Yeah, I'm good. Nervous and on edge," You honestly say, "but good."
"Excited?"
"Yes, definitely," You babble on, "I've just never had a– ah!"
Your hand goes straight to Frank's hair, fingers tangling in his brown hair, when he licks a stripe from your clit to your hole. You muster as much self-constraint as possible, trying to resist the urge to roll your hips forward and grind against his face because you know they'll both prevent you from doing so, if Jack's fingers, which are tightly wrapped around your thigh, are anything to go by.
"You're okay. Breathe." Jack locks eyes with you, and your chest rises and falls in time with his. "There you go. I've got you. We've got you."
"I know, I know, I know–" Your breath catches when you feel Frank's nose brushing against your folds, wanting nothing more than to ride his face but still trusting in whatever these two have planned for you.
Luckily, you don't have to do much more thinking as Jack claims your mouth once more, grabbing your hand in his and intertwining your fingers so you can't escape from this. Why would you want to, though? You know you're in good, agile, skilled hands that will undo you and put you back together again for the fun of it.
Frank's tongue runs amuck as he traces your walls, hitting the most sensitive bundle of nerves with practiced ease, and you can't help but wonder if he's memorized what motions cause you to come the fastest. You can't help but moan at how good you feel, at the stimulation that drives you mad, and your eyes roll hard when Jack chuckles at your desperate behavior, especially when your hand shakes in his.
"Enjoying yourself?"
"Fuck you." You mumble, which makes Jack smirk against your lips.
"Langdon's already doing that–"
"–shut up."
You smash your lips against Jack's, to both prevent him from responding for a moment as well as mask another whine that threatens to escape your throat when Frank's tongue goes even deeper inside of your hole. When you let go of Jack's mouth, to take in a deep, shaky breath, he has the audacity to laugh at your frantic, needy behavior.
"You don't have to tell me twice," Then, Jack brings your hand to his lips, to kiss the skin of your wrist, "You're doing good. Really good. How do you feel?"
"Why do you wanna know?" You intend to tease him, until you notice how his gaze fixates on his prosthetic leg. "Jack, you know I don't care about that. I like having sex with you because you're… you."
"So," His eyes drift down to Frank, who's still eagerly lapping at your cunt without needing to take a breath, "this isn't about–?"
"–No. God no." You chuckle before you press a kiss to his cheek. "I promise that it's not like that. I like you both for different reasons… the great sex is just a bonus."
"You're trouble." Jack watches as you repeat his early gesture — kissing his wrist before you lace your fingers in-between his.
"And you love it." You manage to get out before you tug on Frank's hair when you realize that he isn't providing you any more stimulation, which sucks because you can feel yourself getting closer to your orgasm.
"More?" Frank's tongue swipes against his bottom lip, collecting your slick with one fluid motion that makes you flush hard.
"Yes, more," You whine, "If I ever say no, I have been body-snatched, and you should take that bitch out immediately."
Frank's laughter sends chills up your spine, since it enters via your hole and runs up your body, and your whimpers must sound like nothing less than divine temptation as he dives back into the space between your legs.
"Fuck," You groan, reaching out for Jack once more, but you're surprised when a gentle hand pushes you downwards instead, "hey–!"
Before your head hits the mattress, you catch Frank's gaze, and the wink he shoots you sends your overheated body into overdrive as a few fatal licks to your folds sends you flying over the edge.
Panting and shaking, you help Frank to his feet by pulling on his hair after you finish riding out your orgasm. You feel his pointer finger trace a straight line up your thigh and hips before he runs a thumb over the hem of your t-shirt. The gesture sends cascading shivers down your legs until Jack stops Frank by catching his wrist, and you have to suck in a shallow breath so you don't squirm when both of their hands are lingering above your pubic bone, where you still feel like you need them.
God, I don't think I'll ever get enough of these two.
"I got the shirt." Jack releases Frank's hand when the latter nods in agreement.
"Of course, yeah," Frank's hands land on your thighs as you lazily wrap your legs around his middle, pulling him closer to you before he leans down and kisses you, "You okay?"
Yeah, I'm fantastic. I came because you looked at me. Never been better, really.
Instead of a verbal response, you give a weak thumbs-up that Frank acknowledges by pecking the pad of your thumb with his lips, but he seems to be alone in his approval as you feel Jack press two long fingers to your sex, making you whine desperately as you feel slick drip down your inner thighs.
"Words, sweetheart. Use them." Jack's soft on you when you have sex, but you know that he's not above playing dirty in order to hear the sounds and phrases that let him know that you're enjoying yourself. You usually indulge him, if only to hear the sweet praise from his lips about how good you are for him, how well you're doing, and how good you look. "C'mon, I know you can talk."
"I… I'm good. Legs are a little shaky and numb, but I'll manage." You murmur before Jack slips one finger inside of your hole, causing you to mewl in response. "Jack!"
Unfortunately, you don't hear his response as Frank pins you to the bed, placing your hands above your head in a single-handed hold that you could easily break out of before he continues your earlier steamy make-out session. You can taste yourself on his lips, so you easily understand why he's so obsessed with eating you out before he lets you ride him.
"Thank you." Frank's so close to you that you nearly miss Jack removing his finger from your body, but your hole clenches around nothing, so you feel painfully empty.
"For what?"
"For everything. For being here with us. For being you," Frank loosens his grip on your wrists, carefully flexing his fingers in front of your eyes as his own observe every anxious twitch of your abdomen, "For letting me taste you."
"You don't have to thank me for that," You bite your lip as you watch Frank pull away from you when Jack taps his shoulder, "I'd let you do that anytime."
The metallic, cool taste of blood coats your tongue, from you chewing on your bottom lip with a bit more force than you intend to, when you watch Frank take Jack's finger into his mouth, cleaning the slick from Jack's hand with ease before he releases the other man's finger with a satisfying pop.
Swallowing the ball of spit that threatens to rise up your throat, you quickly prop yourself up on your elbows before Jack places his hand flat against the bed. You're immediately tempted to crawl towards him when he puts his pointer, middle, and ring fingers up in the air before he curls them into his palm.
You can't help but imagine them swirling around inside of you, and you know that Jack knows when he smirks at your transfixed gaze.
"If you want something, you just have to–"
You shut him up with a desperate kiss before he has a chance to finish that remark, but you're as predictable as ever, so you close in on Jack before Frank slides in behind you.
"Shut up." You quietly hiss to Jack, who chuckles to himself.
"I didn't say anything." His hand trails down the middle of your chest before he pulls off your shirt with one clean motion.
"You don't have to." You deadpan. "Your face is very expressive."
"It's not–" Jack scoffs, raising his eyebrows and slightly opening his mouth before he realizes what he's doing. "–I'm an expressive person. Sue me."
"Oh, so that's the word we're going with." Your lips curl upwards as you position your sex over Jack's hand, nearly salivating as you admire how fucking good his hand looks.
"It's the word you used," Jack shoots back, watching how your walls eagerly swallow his three fingers with ease as you slap a hand over your mouth to stifle a moan that'd drive Jack and Frank crazy, "No. Don't do that. Don't hide from us."
"This is embarrassing–"
"–Sweetheart, I watched another man make you orgasm." Ah, yes, the joys of dating a doctor: they're good with their hands, but yet they can't help but use the most clinical, straight-forward words in the bedroom. "You're fine."
"Hey," Frank's voice in your ear makes you softly whine as you place your hand at your side, and he's quick to place your hand on the bed before you can self-censor once more, "I like it when you're loud."
"You promise?" You ask before Frank kisses the shell of your ear.
"I do." His hands then go to your waist, slowing guiding your hips upwards before you slide back down, right onto Jack's fingers. They reach even deeper inside of you, causing you to whimper before you buck your hips forward. "You need help?"
"I got it, baby, I got it." Through labored breaths, you manage to roll your hips forward — shaky at first, but you quickly find your rhythm, at a pace that helps build a pleasurable heat in your core — even as Frank rubs slow, calming circles into your hips all the while. "Thank you for offering, though."
When you look back at Frank, you decide that it's completely unfair how put-together he looks while you feel like a moaning, sweating, stuttering, shaking mess.
So you choose to change that by leaning back into his chest and placing a hand on his well-defined jaw before you mutter something into his neck.
"Y'know… ah!" Your thought is temporarily interrupted when your back arches after Jack curls his fingers inside of your hole. "I've thought about having you both at the same time before tonight."
"You have?" You can tell that he's both stunned and flustered by your admission — his body heats up after you finish talking — which means that he's exactly where you want him.
"Uh-huh," You click your tongue, eyes nearly rolling into the back of your head from how good you feel, "and I know exactly how I want you. You in the front, Jack in the back."
Somewhere, somehow, you know Natalie has detected this change in frequency — freak-quency, if you're truly being honest with yourself — and is giggling like a maniac while she rubs her hands together like a greedy little fly. You fucking despise how well she knows your sexual preferences, and, to your horror, how well you know hers.
I'm doing this because I want this. Not because Natalie put this idea into my head with all of her stupid Eiffel Tower jokes. …That's not it at all.
"…Is that all?" Frank cracks a smile before he shakes his head. "That's what we were talking about before you got here."
Oh?
Oh.
…Oh shit.
It's funny how hot yet absolutely mortifying it is, to think of Jack and Frank talking about what positions they want to put you in after they realized that they were both dating the same person.
You might actually be the luckiest person in the world. If you're not too tired after being fucked repeatedly, you'll have to sneak out and buy a lottery ticket… just to see how far your luck might spread.
"Eyes on me, sweetheart," Jack doesn't have to sternly command you — softly speaking those words to you, in that deliciously low, tender voice of his — for you to obey or listen. Your eyes snap up to meet his, and he responds with a small kiss to your lips. "Good. You're so good for us."
You hate how well he knows you, how his praise drives you fucking crazy, and your hips stutter as you feel a wave of pleasure and ecstasy wash over your body. You lean back, nearly collapsing before Frank catches you with his arms. You feel his hands go up and down your forearms and body, gently comforting you and bringing you down from your high as you shimmy your body away from Jack.
Despite the subtle ache that's starting to settle into your bones, you feel fucking great. Partially because you're very excited for what's coming next, and partially because you're still riding that high from your last orgasm.
There's a soft buzzing in your ears that prevents you from hearing the hushed words that Jack and Frank exchange over your sweaty body. You want to listen, but you're not quite in the listening mood yet. You're just happy to let Frank squeeze your shoulders as Jack's hands linger over your thighs.
This is hot. This is everything you dreamed of and masturbated to and so much more, and the night's still not over yet. There's one last thing you have to do.
You've gotten off twice, so you think it's about time you returned the favor… by getting both of your lovers off at the same time. And, if you happen to come for a third time? Well, wouldn't that just be great?
As soon as you gain some control over your limbs again, you rush towards Jack before you envelope him in a hungry, desperate kiss that can only convey a portion of your want for him and for Frank.
"Eager?" Jack's voice makes you shudder with anticipation as his hands work to slowly spin you around so your back is flush to his chest. "So am I."
You feel his rock-hard erection against your ass, and your hand sneaks behind your body so you can free his dick from his pants and boxers simultaneously. A soft chuckle escapes you when you see Frank not-so-subtly pass Jack a condom.
You'd make a joke, but you once saw Frank open a condom wrapper with his teeth, and it made you unbelievably horny unbelievably fast.
Doctors have to practice what they preach, after all, and you're silently thankful that they're thinking of protecting you when that is possibly the last thing on your mind at the moment.
You remove your hand from Jack's length so he can slip the condom on, and his hands go to your hips as he helps ease you onto his dick. You whimper, feeling extremely warm and full as you carefully adjust your body until you're completely comfortable. You turn your head back so you can kiss Jack, but he catches your hand before you can lay down between him and Frank.
"Squeeze my hand, and we'll stop. Immediately." Jack tells you, and you nod along with his every word. "You're in complete control. This is for you, sweetheart."
"I love you." You murmur.
"Love you too." Jack's free hand moves up your spine, carefully guiding your torso onto the bed as you look up at Frank, who tilts your jaw up with his pointer finger before he pecks your lips.
"Relax your body, and don't move." Frank then sticks two fingers in your mouth, watching with a furious blush on his face as your tongue does laps around his digits. "Keep your mouth open, tongue out."
"Why?" You raise your eyebrows when Frank removes his fingers from your mouth. "You got a tongue depressor nearby?"
"You can't help yourself, can you?" Jack teases before he pushes his hips into yours, causing his dick to go even deeper inside of your hole.
"Hey, that's not fair." You whine. "I'm trying to lighten the mood."
"More like ruin it."
"What can I say… I like fucking around and finding out?" You snort with laughter as you watch Frank undo the belt to his pants. "You like it when I'm testy and insufferable and annoying. Who else is gonna show up at your ED with the stupidest injuries possible?"
"Natalie." Jack and Frank both answer, which gives you a bit of pause.
"That… is a remote possibility, yes," You agree on that front, "but I'm your favorite patient."
"The crown still goes to Natalie–"
"–Shut up." You cut Jack off, softly whimpering when he moves his hips back and forth again. He's teasing you with a torturously slow pace, but, at least you won't come before Frank has a chance to get his dick out of his pants. That doesn't stop you from pleading with Jack to help relieve the growing, needy ache in your stomach. "Jack, please–"
"–Open your mouth."
You comply, opening your mouth and sticking your tongue out, just as Frank had previously instructed.
"Good job, sweetheart." Jack praises as his fingers run down your spine. "Remember to breathe through your nose."
How else am I going to breathe? Through my eyes?
You nod before you're presented with the sight of Frank's dick in front of your face. Your tongue glides over the tip, gathering his precum on your taste buds, before you take his length into your mouth.
You feel incredible, like your body was made to do this.
And then Jack and Frank start moving at the same time, turning your brain to mush as your throat and hole are fucked at the same time. Tears sting your eyes as you nearly choke on Frank's dick, and he hits the back of your throat on numerous occasions, but you don't really seem to care.
All you feel — all you know — is pleasure beyond what your mind could conjure up during a cold shower as you let your hand drift between your legs. There's moaning and groaning from the two men fucking you, but all you hear is static buzz, and your own muffled whines since you can't release them into the world.
Everything's tight, everything's warm, everything's hot, and it's building inside of you — a tightly wound coil that snaps with an intensity that you don't expect — and the world is painted white as you come hard.
At the same time, you feel Jack's hips stutter, signaling his own orgasm, as your mouth is filled with Frank's come. You clean his shaft with your tongue before you swallow the liquid in your mouth, causing Frank to chuckle after he pulls his dick from your mouth.
He then forces your mouth open with his thumb, inspecting the space as he tilts his head curiously.
"You didn't have to swallow–"
"–I wanted to," You heave out before you force your body upwards with shaky arms, "I'm hot."
"Bathroom, then a shower." Jack instructs, and you know there's no room for argument when Frank's smile fades into a more serious expression.
Right. They're doctors. They've probably seen more UTIs in a month than you'll have in a lifetime.
"Yeah, I will," You rest your back against Jack's, and he reacts with a soft oof as you trace small shapes with your nails on one of his thighs, "but I just wanna lay with the two of you for a while. …Until I regain the ability to walk, at least."
~
The door to Natalie's apartment shuts with an unsatisfactory thud, and you nearly jump out of your skin when Nat races up to you and throws her arms around you.
"I missed you!" She exclaims as you drop your luggage to hug her back. "So… how was your weekend?"
"Good." You offer a curt response as you pull on the neckline of your shirt, trying to hide the various bruises and hickeys that cover your neck and chest.
"Okay…" She lets you go before she looks at you with a wicked grin. "Let me rephrase my question… How was Paris?"
"Bitch–"
"–Motherfucker! See, I can call you names too!" Nat retorts as you scoot past her, trying to head towards your room. "C'mon, give me something!"
"Absolutely not. Not until I know that you didn't open your mouth and blab to Jack about Frank."
Nat gasps dramatically.
"I would never!"
"Uh-huh, yeah, I believe you," You roll your eyes, "Did you?"
"I didn't!" She raises her pointer, middle, and index fingers into the air. "Scout's honor."
"I don't trust you."
"You never do," She shoots back, "I know you were busy getting your world rocked–"
"–Jesus Christ, Natalie, don't phrase it like that–"
"–but Kayla and I worked things out. We're… good. Something solid, finally." Nat lets out a shaky breath as you place a hand on your shoulder.
"I'm happy for you, Nat." You smile at her. "My weekend was good. Very relaxing. Thank you for asking."
"Relaxing? Really?" Nat's eyebrows shoot up as you walk through the doorway to your room, flipping the light on as soon as you can reach it. "I don't think you got that much sleep–"
"–fuck you, Nat." You hiss, setting your luggage in the corner of your room before you face plant onto your bed.
She's right. I don't want to tell her that she's right, but she is.
"You see, I would, but you'd be thinking of your boyfriends the entire time–"
"–Natalie, when I say this, I mean it with all of the love in my heart," You say before you loudly grumble into your sheets, "What the fuck is wrong with you?"

summary: After spending ten months with Abbot, you think you've got it all figured out. Two trips to the ED later, you realize that you don't. You also realize that you're very attracted to the day shift doctor who's taken care of you and your friend. — 16.7k words!
It wasn't just one coffee date.
Truly, how could it be when Jack Abbot showed up in a sinfully-tight black shirt — you could tell he had muscles, even with the scrubs on, but good God, where was he hiding all of that? — and plain blue jeans that had your eyes feasting upon his body.
"Hey," You manage to prop yourself up by using one of the wooden chairs as a makeshift crutch, "glad you could make it."
"Wouldn't miss this for the world," Jack offers you a small smile that manages to outdo the sun that shines high in the sky, "Need a hand?"
"I'm good, I–" You pause, facing heating up rapidly when he places your hand on his toned forearm to help you walk to the counter, "–thank you."
"Are you managing by yourself?" Jack's eyes stay pointed towards you as you gaze up at the menu. "Has the cat burglar come back for round two?"
"Nope. I must've roughed him up good the first time." You lean against him, settling most of your weight against his body, "How's Nat? I'd come and see her, but I don't really do much traveling with this thing on."
You swing your casted foot around as proof of concept.
"She's… good, last I heard. The skin graft went really well."
"Good," You hum lightly, trying to not think of your friend's distress right now. Nat's healing in a hospital bed, and she's not going to die on you. "Nat's a fighter with a good heart… and she's exceptionally clumsy, which got her in that position in the first place."
"And you're not?" Jack challenges.
"I fell out of that window gracefully," You snort with laughter at your own joke, "I just didn't stick the landing."
"I–"
"–Aww," A female barista suddenly appears at the counter, cooing at the two of you, "how long have the two of you been married?"
Although you're hot in the face, you do take the opportunity to tease your date.
"Two years–"
As does Jack.
"–five years, this coming May–"
"–Jack!" You chuckle before you shake your head. "It's a… first date, believe it or not. I made a strong first impression, and I guess he wanted to come back for more."
"Cute." The girl hums without any more particular interest in the conversation. "What can I get you?"
You both give your orders to her, and you struggle to remove your wallet from your pants pocket — Holy shit, next Friday cannot come any sooner, so you can gain some sort of mobility and independence back when this cast is off of your fucking leg — and you only stop when you hear a soft beeping sound from the card reader in front of you.
"Jack," You softly whine as you admit defeat, "I could've gotten it. I can pay for overpriced coffee–"
"–I've got it," Jack softly murmurs as he gazes into your eyes, "I've got you."
Your fingers trail down his arm as you slowly trace small circles on the skin of his wrist, massaging the area as a small, hidden thanks.
The rest of the date went off without a hitch — well, these days you consider not falling on your face or swallowing your own tongue as a win — so maybe you're better off saying that the date was a success.
So much so that he wanted to see you again. And again. And again.
Brief text messages and quick phone calls became elongated paragraphs and hours going by before you hang up the phone because you want to spend as much time as possible talking to him. You two have such different schedules, so you treasure the time you can spend with Dr. Jack Abbot without accidentally throwing yourself out of the window or ending up in the emergency room because your best friend is as much of a klutz as you are.
Even when that time comes at two in the morning, and Jack's calling you because he needs to hear your voice.
You stir, as any reasonable person would, when your phone vibrates like the world is gonna end. Flipping the screen over on your nightstand before you temporarily blind yourself with the power of a thousand suns, you're able to make out Jack's name on your home screen. You drop the phone on your face as you answer, doing your best to hide the small noise of distress that you make from the temporary pain that comes along with your clumsiness.
"Hello?" You sleepily murmur, "Jack? Is something wrong?"
"Hey." One word is all Jack has to say. Three letters, one syllable. You can tell just by the inflection in his voice that something happened. Something bad happened. "Did I wake you?"
"I'm fine, Jack," You're quick to reassure him of your own safety in case that's the cause of his distress, "safely tucked into bed with no open windows or cats near me–"
"–coded someone around your age." He sounds haunted as he speaks. "They didn't make it."
"You wanna talk about it?" You sit up in bed, preparing for a longer conversation. "I know you can't tell me a lot, but maybe–"
"–I just wanted to hear your voice."
It's in this moment that you realize that, as he was trying to save this person's life, he probably saw you on that table instead of that poor soul who left this world far too soon. How hard it must've been, then, to let that patient go when there was no chance of resuscitation. Seeing your eyes closed, your body cold, your limbs unmoving as they wheeled not-you away to the visitation room.
"Jack," You try to sound as warm and comforting as possible, as if your voice can act as a verbal blanket that'll shield him from the pain and heartache he's feeling, "come over once your shift's done. We can talk about whatever is on your mind then, okay? Right now, your patients need you. You never know what dumbass might come through your doors after they messed with the wrong stray cat."
That, at least, gets him to laugh.
"Thanks." Simple, sweet, confident. That's your Jack. "Get some sleep."
"You first, Dr. Abbot." You say, far too aware of his poor sleeping habits.
"I'll sleep when I know you're safe." He whispers, and your heart races in response.
"And I thought I was the cheesy, hopeless romantic…" You chuckle to yourself. "Have a good night, Jack. Don't hesitate to call me again. I'm happy to talk to you. Your voice is the best thing to wake up to."
"Oh, I think you'd rather wake up and find out that you've won the lottery."
"Is it too late to change my answer?" You softly laugh. "I'm serious about you coming over, though. There's a key underneath the house mat. Let yourself in."
"You don't mind?"
"Of course I don't. Just don't bring the entire night shift with you," You crack a small smile, "I forgot to buy an extra party platter."
"Forget the party platter! I'm holding you to that fancy Italian dinner!" Dr. Ellis' voice echoes through your speakers, causing you to grin. "C'mon, Abbot, we need you in Trauma One. Casanova can wait until your shift's over."
"Go, Jack. I can hold down the fort here," You yawn loudly before you stretch your arms, "by going right back to sleep. I'll… see you later?"
"Yeah," Jack answers, "I'll see you later."
You fall asleep the moment you hang up the phone, only waking up when you feel the bed shift after someone sits down on the side of the bed.
"It's eight already?" You rub sleep out of your eyes as you reach for your bedroom lamp, but gentle fingers around your wrist guide your hand back to your side. "How long have you been here?"
"Not long enough," Jack huffs lightly as you scoot over, making room for him on your queen-sized bed as he carefully removes his prosthetic leg with a soft groan from his lips, "I can sleep on the couch–"
"–get your ass in bed," You grumble before you throw your covers open, "doctor's orders, or whatever the hell you people say."
"Alright, alright, if you're going to twist my arm about it," He pulls his shirt off before he climbs into bed next to you, "don't you–"
"–just called off." You throw your phone off of your bed, and it hits the wall with an unflattering thud that makes Jack chuckle. "My stomach just started hurting, all of a sudden."
"So we both have the day off?"
"Uh-huh," You nod, allowing your sleepy head to rest on his bare chest instead of a pillow, but you'd argue that the former was more comfortable anyway, "I'm supposed to gradually get back into normal activity with my leg, but Nat decided that she wanted to go shopping yesterday and… let's just say I won't be running any 5-K marathons anytime soon."
"Almost didn't recognize you without the cast." Jack's chest rumbles with gentle laughter, his lips brushing against the crown of your head as you cuddle closer to him.
"Whatever," You mumble, "You doing alright?"
"Better. It was a… rough night."
"I'm here for you," You place a hand over his heart before you meet his eyes, even in the darkness, "whenever you need me."
Lips pressed against flushed, tender flesh and fleeting caresses hidden under nighttime skies and dark, poorly-lit rooms. Small secrets and little jokes that would make you both crack a smile in the middle of the tensest situations. It's gentle, it's easy, and it's yours.
Even if everyone seems eager to have a piece of something that's still blooming and coming into fruition.
"You drink beer?" Jack seems pleasantly surprised about this new development as you crack open the lid.
"I used to be really into mixed drinks, but those got expensive and I became less of a wine snob when I couldn't afford the good stuff," You stare at the can in your hand fondly, "I remember when my dad snuck my brother and I beers when we were teenagers. They tasted fucking awful back then, but it was the gesture that really got to me, y'know?"
Your lips curl off to one side as you feel Jack stare at you — not in the doctor-analyzing-his-patient way, but in a way that gives you space to put your thoughts together and express them in an appropriate and healthy manner.
"Fuck, it's been years since we last spoke. I don't even know if they'd want to hear about my life anymore since I'm not going to be a doctor or a world-renowned violinist. I…" You trail off. "I mean, sure, it's not been the easiest path forward, but it's my life. I'm proud of what I came from, what I've overcome, and what I have to look forward to in the future."
"Amen to that," Jack gently taps his can to yours, "cheers."
"Cheers," You take a quick swig before you look around his space, "nice place. Did you clean up your bachelor pad just for me?"
"It's always clean," He argues, "I never know who's gonna drop by."
"So you're expecting someone else to come by?" You tease, hiding a flush behind the beer can that's clenched in your grasp as Jack steps closer to you.
"No. Just you."
Damn Jack Abbot and his ability to fluster you with the softest and simplest of words.
"Ah… I'm special to you, then?" You recover quickly, tossing another quip his way as you take a sip of alcohol for bravery rather than comfort or enjoyment.
"Yeah. I thought about redecorating the place for you." He says.
"Really?" You bite your bottom lip — a nervous habit that carried from adolescence into adulthood. "Didn't take you as a 'mood lighting' or 'accent piece' kinda guy."
"No," Jack's lips quirk upwards, curling up into a small smirk that makes your heart pound, "I couldn't afford that much bubble wrap–"
"–I'm not that clumsy, I swear!" You softly whine. "It was a one-time thing. I'm being careful around animals and heights. I've learned my lesson, Jack. The cast was enough of a punishment."
"How's your leg?" He asks — he always does when you broach the subject of your injury, the doctor in him can't help it — as his close proximity to you allows him to reach out to touch your leg, but he doesn't do much more than ghost his fingers over your left thigh. You wish he'd do more, though.
"Getting stronger every day. I can walk for long periods of time without stiffness or pain, so that's progress," Your eyes stay fixated on his fingers and how they twitch, yearning to touch your skin before they sink into the safety of his pockets, "thanks for the recommendation. I really like my physical therapist. She's nice and her place of business takes my insurance, which is like hitting the lottery."
"I knew you'd like her." Jack softly whispers as you shift closer to him, letting your chest brush against his as your mind hones in on the thought of kissing him over and over again. The bass drum clattering around in your heart agrees, your breath catching when his fingers curl around your forearm.
No one would believe you if you said you hadn't kissed Jack Abbot on the lips. Nat certainly didn't — "What do you mean you've slept in the same bed and you haven't kissed him yet?!? Aren't you skipping a few steps?" — but the opinion of your nosy best friend and her equally-nosy situationship, Kayla, mattered little to you. You were happy to go slow for once, moving past the rush of a first whirlwind romance and one-off hook-ups into something that felt more grounded and realistic.
You don't remember who made the first move, or if you both naturally leaned in towards each other, but your mouth meets his, and it's perfect. Not in the sparks-flying or bubbling-cauldron-of-overflowing-feelings way that made you rush into things that you didn't feel ready for, leaving you with the taste of lingering regret on your lips as your partner for the night turned away from you.
No, this is different. A good sort of different. A comfort that feels like curling up with a good book, a warm cup of tea, and a heated blanket on a chilly Midwestern day as you watch the snow fall past an open window. Jack's that comfort and safety for you to fall back on when all else is lost.
"Jack," His name is hot off your lips, breath still tickling his mouth as your eyes met his, "are you…?"
"Yeah," There's a brief pause as his gaze is fixated on your lips, "you?"
"Perfect." You murmur before you surrender to the all-encompassing gravitational pull that is Dr. Jack Abbot.
Your hands freely explore his broad shoulders, digits gripping onto the fabric of his shirt as his hands, delicately placed upon your hips, carefully back you into the counter before he pins you there. You kiss him like the world — your world, the perfect utopia where this never ends — depends on it, and Jack chases your lips with equal fervor that makes you feel wanted and cherished.
God, it's sweet and it's soft and it's gentle and it's—
RINGGGGGGG!
—over because someone's phone went off, causing you to sheepishly back away from him. Jack's phone is within reach, so you swipe it off of the counter once you realize that his phone was the cause of the disruption. You answer it for him, placing a hand on his chest in reassurance when he tries to reach for the phone.
"Hello?" You can't help but let a little annoyance slip into your voice. "Who is this?"
"Who is this?" The male on the other end of the line parrots your question with innate curiosity. "Who are you? "
"I asked you first." Defiance runs through your veins, causing Jack to chuckle as he traces small lines up and down your forearm.
"Dr. Michael Robinavitch–"
"–so you're Dr. Robby!" Your eyes light up when you realize who you're talking to. "Jack talks about you all of the time, I–"
"–Robby," You pout when Jack snatches the phone from your hand, "You need something? …No, I'm not putting them back on the… Really?"
He relents, allowing you to handle his phone once more as you talk to the Dr. Robby.
"So you're the one Abbot's been fawning over."
"Maybe," You shrug, pausing for a beat, "Does he talk about me?"
"No," Robby hums lightly, "not directly. But he does talk about this one particular person a lot–"
"–I don't know who you're referring to." You shoot back.
"I can see why he likes you." Robby chuckles as you raise an eyebrow.
"I don't know if we're at the liking stage yet," You place a hand over your mouth as Jack pulls you into his arms, trying your best not to squeal over the phone, "but I'll pass the message along."
"Take care of Jack, okay?" There's a soft sternness to the doctor's voice that, temporarily, throws you off-guard.
"I will," You whisper back, "take care of yourself, Dr. Robby."
"Hey–" Jack goes to get another word in after you hand his phone back to him, but he's hung up on before he gets a chance to speak, "–Good talk."
"So you talk about me at work, huh?" Your hands settle on his stomach as he set his phone on the counter. "God, it's so hard, being so popular in the Pitt–"
You're cut off with a kiss to the lips that brings a small smile to your face.
"–sorry about that," He seems genuinely apologetic until you spot a smirk forming on his face when he leans in to kiss you again, "where were we?"
Nat thought you were fucking with her when you came home that day all smiles, babbling about your first kiss-turned-makeout-session with Dr. Abbot until she realizes that you weren't.
"Five months of dates, two months of occasional sleepovers, and that was the first time you kissed?"
"I didn't want to rush things!"
"You really put the tortoise in the tortoise and the hare–"
"–and you really are a hare, since you and Kayla have been fucking like rabbits since you got your burn dressings off–"
"–you listen to us?!?"
"The walls are thin! Do you think I wanna know the intimate details of your sex life, Nat? There are certain things that should be between you, her, and your doctor that I now know about!"
You won't lie — you have thought about Jack Abbot in that way — but you were been waiting until the moment was right. Until you felt ready.
Sleepy, soft kisses are shared between you and Jack as your favorite TV show plays in the background — you'll rewatch the episode when you're alone and less tempted by the object of your desires. Your fingers can't help but trace and retrace the muscles on his body. If they're there for your eyes to enjoy, you might as well have some fun committing them to memory, right?
You're trying to keep your laughter tempered and your sweet confessions as quiet as possible, as to not wake Natalie, who is peacefully sleeping in the room next to yours because she has a big interview in the morning. You weren't planning on becoming roommates again, but her warm presence in your life as you recovered from your injuries made you realize how lonely you were in your tiny apartment in the middle of Pittsburgh. She didn't even have to nag you about it — she asked, and you immediately accepted.
Jack was happy to hear that you had someone to lean on, even if he worried that the two of you might catch the apartment building on fire in the process.
"I'm an adult," You murmur in-between kisses, "I can handle myself."
"I know you can," His eyes soften, hands slowly sneaking up your waist and daring to dive under the hem of your tank top, "I still worry, though."
"When don't you?" You try to crack a small joke before you catch his wrists before they disappear under your shirt, "Jack–"
"–Sorry," Jack thinks he's misread the room, kissing your forehead as he tries to withdraw his hands from your chest, "We don't have to."
"I want to, though. I want this." Suddenly emboldened, you climb into his lap before your legs straddle his. "I want you."
You frown when he removes one of his hands from your body, only to be a little flustered when he adjusts the strap of your tank top so it isn't tangled into knots.
"You want this?"
An out, if you'd like it.
You don't want that though. You don't want anything but to explore feelings and sensations that you've only been able to explore with your hand in the darkest, quietest parts of the night.
"Yes," You whisper as your fingers play with his gray, curly tufts of hair, "is that so hard to believe?"
"I want you too."
It's a quieter, softer admission than you expect from the confident yet slightly cocky doctor that you've come to adore. You treasure it, though. The intimacy of it all, knowing that you're one of the few people he lets himself be vulnerable with, even if it's for the briefest of moments. You yearn to be his comfort and quiet in the middle of a chaotic, stressful life due to his occupation.
Hesitations are thrown out of the nearest window as you reach for him, and those whispered confessions of adoration evolve into whimpers and moans as bodies press against each other in the most delightful and lustful of ways.
Ten months. It's hard to believe that it's been ten months since your life was flipped upside-down, when you literally flipped upside-down after you fell out of a window, but time really does fly when you have something to look forward to the end of every week. Whether it's a small outing that leads you back to Jack's place or your bedroom, you find yourself eager for Friday to come sooner, yet you never want the day to end when it arrives.
Saturday might be my new least favorite day of the week, dethroning Monday as—
"–Loverboy's up this early?" Nat pulls your attention from your phone as you've been scrolling through your previous messages with Jack.
"No, I'm just… thinking." You turn your phone off before she has a chance to peer over your shoulder and snoop in your private messages. "You're not a morning person, Nat. It's a Saturday–"
"–new year, new me," Nat shrugs before she places her arms on the chair, leaning on it for support, "so… you wanna tell me what you and Doctor Sexy–"
"–please stop with the nicknames. You can call him Jack, that's his name–"
"–fine," She rolls her eyes as she collapses on the couch parallel to you, moving a few magazines off of the glass coffee table before she props her feet onto it, "you and Jack talked about last night? Did you even do much talking?"
"We talked… a bit," Your face flushes as your fingers ghost the side of your neck, remembering how he pressed kiss after kiss to the column of your throat, "why are you asking? What do you wanna know?"
"Are you two dating yet?"
Ah, yes. The question Nat's been pestering you with for months.
"Umm…" Chewing on your bottom lip, you fidget with your phone case as you try to drum up a satisfactory answer, "well, not exactly."
"Why not?" Nat's concerned, leaning forward as she develops more interest in the conversation.
"God, are you my mother?" You joke to break up some of the tension in the room. "Listen, I don't wanna rush things. Casual is fine. Casual is good. Why do I have to label what we have? Maybe I'm tired of rushing into things and watching them fall apart in front of my eyes."
"Jeez, I didn't mean it like that," She murmurs, "I'm worried that he might be stringing you along."
"Nat, I appreciate the concern, but I'm good. We're good," You clarify, "I'm still trying to figure everything out with my career and my family. A formal relationship isn't my top priority. I don't want to give myself to someone else unless I can give all of myself to them, y'know?"
"Your family?" Nat, unfortunately, picks up that detail. "Are you talking to your parents again?"
"I am," You fold your arms over your chest, "I may have offhandedly mentioned to my brother that I was seeing someone, and he said something to my parents. We've had some… conversations after he gave them my phone number. Some good, some not-so-good."
"They want to visit." She guesses.
"They want to meet the guy I like and then, based on how much of a catch he is, make a judgment on whether I'm worthy of being their child again or not," You huff as your trigger finger turns your phone on and off repeatedly, "This whole thing has made me contemplate other parts of my life. I like my job, but maybe I'm better off applying to another company since I have entry-level work experience in my field. Somewhere that has cheaper costs of living and better health insurance."
"You want to leave Pittsburgh?" Nat pouts as she looks at you. "Forget that. You're leaving me?!?"
"Sorry, I guess our relationship is through. Now you and Kayla can be exclusive," Your lips curl into the smirk, "speaking of… are the two of you dating?"
"That's not important–"
"–Oh my God, you're getting on my case when you don't even have your shit figured out!" You feel justified in pointing an accusing finger at her. "You are such a fucking hypocrite!"
"We have had discussions about being more," Nat tries to defend herself, "unfortunately, they haven't gone anywhere."
"Whatever." You make a show of rolling your eyes, which causes your roommate to scoff.
"I'm only saying something because Kayla was sneaking out of my room when Dr. Abbot was leaving yours, and the two of them got to talking and…"
You're briefly entertained by the idea of your roommate's older situationship encountering your older situationship at six in the morning before you dig for more details about this conversation.
"What'd they talk about?"
"Stuff."
"You're a bitch." You hiss before you place your hands on your knees, preparing to stand. "You want eggs for breakfast?"
"Sure. Can you scramble them?" Her voice drifts into the background as you walk into the kitchen area. "Oh, can you put some cheese on top, too?"
"You can't eat eggs without cheese? Are you a child?"
"I'll tell you what they talked about if you do!"
Now that's an offer you can't refuse.
So, in the most unflattering of pajama pants that depicts your favorite animated character in a variety of facial expression and a ratty, old t-shirt that should probably be thrown in the garbage heap rather than your laundry basket, you make your roommate her special breakfast before you quickly throw something together for yourself.
"Hey," You, as menacingly as possible, shake a wooden spoon in the direction of Natalie's Pomeranian, Mr. Fluffles, who's somehow gotten free from his cage, "you are not supposed to be in the kitchen! Get out!"
That damn dog attempts to nip at your ankles, but he's got shitty aim and he ends up ramming his face into a lower cupboard door instead, causing you to cackle to yourself.
"You get the clumsiness honestly."
"Mr. Fluffles! Are they being mean to you?" You hear the sympathy — for a dog that aggravates and picks fights with you first, thanks for asking — in Nat's voice as she speaks. "C'mere, boy! I'll give you a piece of bacon if you stay put!"
"Do not reward that dog for his bad behavior, Nat!" You groan as you plate her meal first, then yours as Mr. Fluffles scampers off towards his owner, "He pulled a Houdini act and got out of his cage. He's gonna hurt someone — probably me again, knowing my luck. Natalie, what if he bites a mailman or a delivery driver instead of me? What then?"
"He won't. He's a very good boy, aren't you?" Nat gives the dog head scratches that he does not deserve as you set her food on her lap, and you growl at Mr. Fluffles after he does the same to you. "What are you doing? He's a dog! He wouldn't bark at you if you were nice to him!"
"Nice to him?!? That dog's," You spit a certain amount of vile at the mention of Nat's beloved pet, "been nothing but mean to me! He made me lose my footing the night I fell out of that window, remember?"
"And he hasn't done anything like that since, right?" Nat runs her long fingernails through the dog's fur, causing him to yawn. Mr. Fluffles is a spoiled bastard, in your honest opinion. "I think you're worried for no reason."
"And I think you're too calm about a dog that shouldn't even be in this apartment." You make a face at the dog when he bares his teeth at you when you take a seat in the living room once more. "Kayla's got it bad for you, 'cause I saw her chew out this young couple that tried to bring a Rottweiler into their apartment."
"Don't even talk to me about partner privileges! You have a personal doctor on call," She wiggles her eyebrows, "for all of your health needs. Physical, mental, sexual–"
"–and there you go again, making it weird–"
"–you always make it weird first! You told me and Kayla to keep it down–"
"–because I don't wanna know what you're doing with that strap, Nat–"
"–Leave me and my pink strap out of this."
"It's pink?" You gag before you can bring your fork to your mouth. "And it's yours?!? …Fuck, this is like college all over again, except I don't have another roommate to confide in this time."
"You and Alex, you used to…?" She looks a little betrayed by this realization. "Hey, I wasn't that bad!"
"Four girls in one night was your record." You recall a bet that you actually made a decent chunk of money from. "Alex took the under on the bet, I took the over. Should've seen their face when I ate Chinese takeout for a week on their dime."
"You bet on how many girls–" Nat takes a deep breath in, then out, "–I'm gonna pretend like I didn't hear that. And you are not one to talk about that shit. Sure, you and that piece of shit that you dated back then had sex, but I don't remember you moaning their name with the same intensity that you scream 'Jack, Jack, Jack-!'"
Nat stops her fake moaning when you throw one of your slippers at her face. She manages to catch it in her free hand before she offers it to Mr. Fluffles, who tears it to shreds once his teeth get a hold of the fabric.
"Maybe I will move if I get a job offer." You grumble as you tear into a piece of toast that's decorated with butter and your favorite spread. "At least I won't have to deal with a poorly-trained dog and a best friend who likes to snoop in my business–"
"–Kayla and Jack were talking about you this morning."
What?
"Tell me everything," You sober up, going from silly to serious in mere milliseconds, "now. No more bullshit, Nat."
"She didn't tell me everything," Nat confesses, "but I know enough. That man's got it bad for you, babes. He doesn't want to rush you into anything, but he asked Kayla if you were seeing anyone else on the side. Not in like a weird, possessive way or anything. She said he sounded… curious."
"He thinks I have a roster," You chuckle to yourself because that feels like an impossibility — Two guys liking you at once? What is this, a shitty Hallmark rom-com? — before a damning thought enters your mind. "Oh my God, he thinks I have a roster! Nat, what if he thinks I'm fucking with him, or I'm doing this for money–"
"–calm down. I don't think he meant it like that." Nat sees the lines of worry that race across your forehead. "Maybe he wanted to invite someone else into bed with you–"
"–and there you go, making it a sex thing–"
"–you made this entire conversation a sex thing first!" She yells before you set your plate down in slight frustration.
"It's too early to deal with your bullshit," You whine as you stand, carefully wiping any crumbs off of your shirt and into the wastebasket that's conveniently placed next to your seat, "I need caffeine."
"If you're taking orders, I'll take a mocha."
"No, I wasn't," You smile at your friend, not noticing how Mr. Fluffles jumps down from the couch and approaches your very biteable ankles, "but I suppose I can make an exception. Just this once–"
You howl in pain when that fucking dog bites down hard on the flesh of your ankle. It's not the playfully nibbles that you've come to expect from the Pomeranian; instead, this feels like a declaration of war. One that you are sorely underprepared for.
"Nat, getting your fucking dog off of me!" You try to pull him off of you by the back of his collar, but Mr. Fluffles will not let your poor ankle go. "Put the phone down and help me!"
"And miss recording this?" She snorts as you hop around like an idiot, trying to get that dog to stop using your lower limb like a chew toy without severely hurting the animal, "No way!"
It's all fun and games for her until one wrong move from that dog sends you crashing into the glass coffee table that's right in front of her.
"Oh shit!"
~
You knew it was bad when the registration clerk told you to quickly fill out your paperwork so you could be seen by a triage nurse as soon as possible.
You knew it was really bad when the triage nurse took one look at you, hissed in sympathetic pain, and then brought you a wheelchair so he could take you to an empty room in the back of the emergency department alongside your worrywart of a best friend.
"How are you doing? Is anything hurting? Should I call someone?"
"Nat, I'm fine," You're probably calmer than you should be, considering that you have multiple glass shards sticking out of your face, arms, and feet, not to mention that you have a nasty bite on your right ankle — at least your poor left leg gets a break, this time — that makes it hard to think straight, "A little banged-up, but I'll be alright. Didn't plan on going as a porcupine to your Halloween party, but I think I can make this work–"
"–this is not fucking funny!" She hisses at you as the nurse helps you get settled into your cot. "You could've died!"
"You were not this concerned when I fell out of a window!" You scrunch your nose at her, ignoring the look of concern that the nurse points in your direction. "I promise we're not regulars, Mateo."
"That's what they all say." Mateo chuckles to himself, a light smile on his face as he disposes of his gloves before he exits the curtained-off space. "Hold tight. I think I know just who to call."
"So, like… is it a requirement to be hot to work in this hospital?" Nat says her thoughts aloud, causing you to smack her arm with the hand that doesn't have a piece of glass sticking out of it. "Hey, I'm just making an observation here! The entire night shift was hot, that nurse was hot, the doctor that's gonna fix you up will also be hot–"
"–I don't see why Mateo…" The doctor in black scrubs that pulls back that curtain is taken aback when he spots the various bits of glass that are poking out of your skin, alongside the nurse that stands beside him, "Oh."
"Yeah, yeah," You grumble, "I'm not gonna be on the cover of Vogue any time soon–"
"–you wanna see a video?"
"Natalie!" You reprimand your friend, glaring at her when the nurse and doctor exchange intrigued looks.
"Let's get your friend fixed up first," He shines a bright light in your eyes before he moves his finger back and forth, and you track the movements of said digit perfectly, "My name is Dr. Langdon. Can you tell me–"
"–Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, the year is twenty twenty-six, and I don't wanna tell you who the president is because he's a piece of shit," You recite your name and address for Dr. Langdon as well, "anything else, or am I free to go, officer?"
"Jesus," The nurse in the space with you grimaces as he holds Natalie's phone, presumably watching you face plant into the glass coffee table after Mr. Fluffles took a chunk out of your leg, "that dog did not show you any mercy, did he?"
"He never does," You lock eyes with Dr. Langdon, "don't get a Pomeranian. They're little hellions."
"If I get my kids another dog," He peeks over the male nurse's shoulder to glance at the world's most embarrassing video of you, "it won't be a Pomeranian. You have my word."
"Try a goldfish. They're low-maintenance." You suggest, and he hums in agreement as his eyes drift down to the bite mark on your leg.
"Your Pomeranian–"
"–Mr. Fluffles." Nat quickly corrects Dr. Langdon, who takes no issue with the stupid-ass name your roommate chose for her dog.
"Right, Mr. Fluffles." God, you can tell he's trying to not laugh at you. Fuck your life. "Is he caught up on his vaccinations?"
"I…" Natalie scratches the back of her head before steam blows out of your ears.
"Nat." You click your tongue in stark disapproval. "If you're gonna tell me that your dog isn't vaccinated against rabies, then you need to take a walk before I try to deck you."
"It slipped my mind–"
"–please go." It hurts to push Nat away, but you're pissed that you might be end up with some serious illness because of her forgetfulness. "Grab something from the cafeteria while I get stitched up, okay?"
"I'm sorry." Nat casts her eyes downwards, and you reach over with your good hand to offer her a comforting squeeze on her shoulder. "You sure you're gonna be alright down here, all by yourself?"
"I won't be by myself," You reassure her, "I've got Dr. Langdon and–"
"–Donnie," The nurse quickly introduces himself to you before he directs Nat to the cafeteria, "food's half-decent. Just… stay away from the tuna melts."
"Aye-aye," She salutes Donnie before she gives you two thumbs-up, "You got this!"
"Thanks, Nat." You murmur before she leaves your sight.
"You two are close." Dr. Langdon notes as he access the sole computer in the room, presumably bringing up your charts where he'll also get to see the little… accident you had ten months ago.
"Nat's my best friend. We met in college, actually. Roommates who could never kick the habit, I guess." You wrangle with a bit of guilt in your stomach, feeling terrible for pushing away someone that you'd consider to be like a sister to you. "She's helped me through a lot of stuff."
"Any friends or family we can call?" Donnie sanitizes his hands before he gloves up. "A partner, maybe–"
"–No." You cut him off — God, you don't even want to hear the lecture that is inevitably coming your way from Jack about this fiasco. "Just me and Nat. Closest family lives in Ohio, but… we don't get along."
"Was Natalie the only one taking care of you after you were laid up for surgery?" Dr. Langdon asks, causing you to panic ever-so-slightly.
Well, shit.
"Yeah, she was," You can't exactly dance around your relationship with Abbot, but you don't exactly want to reveal it to one of his co-workers, so you dabble in what you think is a fair middle ground, "but I had another friend help me out. He's a doctor who works nights–"
"–does he work here?"
"Nope." You lie through your teeth, and both men take you at face-value, thankfully. "He doesn't like to bring work home, so I don't ask, and he doesn't tell."
"Okay," Your doctor mumbles something to himself before he looks at you, "Any balance or mobility issues?"
"Besides a little dog who thinks my leg is his chew toy?" You snort with laughter, only wincing when you feel a piece of glass in your cheek move from the action. "Nah. My physical therapist cleared me after two months of bi-weekly sessions, and my brother checked my gait over Facetime to make sure I was healing well."
"Brother?" Donnie aims to distract with idle chatter as he reaches for your arm, carefully examining the multitude of glass shards that poke out of your skin.
"He's a senior resident at the University of Michigan Medical Center," You speak with a little bit of pride, "He worries about me and my younger sister, since he's older than us, but I don't think I can blame him after this. He always jokes that I was his first child, my younger sister was his second, and my niece is his third. I can't believe she's six months old already."
"They grow up fast. My daughter's nearly a year old." He grabs your injured hand next, inspecting the small glass shard that's embedded in your skin. "I'll use lidocaine to numb up the area before I stitch it up. Need anything for the pain?"
"My leg's killing me," You glance down at your ankle to see a much smaller flesh wound than you expect, "No morphine, if possible. I, uh… was a bit of a wreck last time, and I said some really stupid shit when I was drugged up."
"Morphine, huh?" Donnie then grins at you before he pats your shoulder. "Wait, are you the Casanova?"
Kill me now.
"Casanova?" Dr. Langdon slowly repeats, a handsome smile upon his face. "What's the story there?"
"When I came in for my compound fracture, I may have tried to pick up a few doctors and nurses while they were fixing me up," You shrug before another lie slips through your teeth, "struck out bad, but it doesn't hurt to try, right?"
"I don't know if you struck out," Donnie says, and you're deeply concerned about being exposed until he speaks next, "Lena seems to like you."
"She likes me because I tried to kiss her… which is not a thing that either of you have to worry about," You're stumbling over your words, trying to not look like an idiot while managing to do the opposite, "not that I wouldn't want to, because you both are very handsome, but I…"
You pinch the bridge of your nose, managing to stop your rambling.
"Maybe you should give me the morphine, so I sound like less of a fucking idiot." You reprimand yourself. "I'm usually charming and graceful, but I'm a little off my game today. Obviously."
"Don't knock yourself," Donnie tries to be supportive, "as long as you don't kick or bite me, we're good."
"Appreciate it," You murmur as the nurse slips out of the room, leaving you alone with Dr. Langdon, "again, I am so sorry for running my mouth. I think I knocked the common sense out of my brain earlier."
"I've heard worse," Dr. Langdon briefly frowns before he takes a seat upon a nearby stool, hands reaching for but not yet touching your ankle, "May I?"
"Yes, please," You expect to feel pain as he lifts your ankle from the bedding, but his tender touch is anything but as he inspects your injury with his eyes, "So, do you have kids?"
"Two. A boy and a girl… and a goldendoodle that's heaps of trouble," He chuckles as he pokes at the wound, "are you thinking about having kids in the future?"
"Undecided. I mean, I wouldn't mind if someone I dated had kids, but I'm not sure about having some of my own," You sigh before immediately addressing your verbal blunder, "I swear, I don't mean for every sentence out of my mouth to sound like a pick-up line that's directed towards you–"
"–I don't mind."
I don't mind. As in, it's fine. As in… Dr. Langdon's okay with you being a complete and utter wreck as you try to navigate this conversation in the most painful way possible.
Your heart shouldn't skip a beat, but it does.
"Thanks." You run a hand through your hair as you try to shake off the flirtatious yet awkward vibe that's creeped into the room. "I wouldn't want you to get the wrong impression of me. I'm not half-bad, especially when I'm not trying to do an impromptu cosplay of Sonic the Hedgehog."
"Is your family from Pennsylvania?" Dr. Langdon distracts you with idle chatter that does little to ease your mind as his fingers trace the shards of glass that creep up your arm.
"I don't have that Midwestern charm?" You joke before you give a serious answer. "We moved around a lot. My dad struggled to hold a steady job when we were young. We went where the money was."
"I bet your dad's proud to have three successful kids."
"He's certainly proud of two of them," You grumble, quickly switching the topic before he has the chance to question you about that response, "what about you? I bet you're the pride and joy of your family."
"We had some… rough patches, especially after the divorce," You swear you weren't looking at his left ring finger until this very moment, when you just happened to notice that there isn't a gold or silver band there, "but they try to be there for me. Even when I'm being an asshole."
Must be nice.
"It's important to have people like that in your life." You hum in agreement as he reaches for your cheek, pausing until you give him nonverbal consent with a nod of your head.
"Do you have someone like that?"
…Damn it.
"Family-wise?" You scrunch your nose before you slowly shake your head. "My brother's nice, and I speak to my sister on… occasion, but they don't know a lot about my day-to-day life. Nat's the only person I talk to about stuff like that."
"Good," Dr. Langdon hums, carefully turning your face while he, hopefully, does not notice the growing heat on your cheeks from the touch, "Well, my unprofessional advice is to go buy a lottery ticket."
"I got that lucky, huh?" You chuckle to yourself as you bite the inside of your cheek, scolding yourself for wanting to chase his fingers after they leave your face. "So, they're not too deep, and I didn't hit any major arteries?"
"Check and check," He stands, casually strolling over to the computer at the side of the space, "Does your brother practice emergency medicine?"
"A little out of left field, Dr. Langdon…" You can't help but smile when you catch his curious gaze with your eyes. "But, yes, he does. He was always quick on his feet, especially when he had me play nurse to my little sister's stuffed animals… I don't wanna talk about the ways I've had to stitch up some poor stuffed rabbit so my sister didn't freak out over it."
"Did he teach you about the differential–"
"–a systematic process to identify the cause of a patient's symptoms when multiple conditions cause the same symptoms," You repeat a textbook-like definition that your brother ingrained in your head as he studied for his degree, "I'm surprised I still know that. It's been years since he used me as a study guide."
"I'm impressed." Dr. Langdon comments, leaving you confused on his motives for this line of questioning.
"Why are you cold-calling me when I'm your patient, Dr. Langdon?" You flip the script by asking him something, instead. "I didn't go to med school. I don't know anything about being a doctor–"
"–course of treatment?"
"CBC and blood cultures for labs, Head CT to rule out any brain trauma, rabies and tetanus shots to be safe…" The answer spills out of you before you can pull it back, and you're quick to wag a finger at Dr. Langdon when he grins at you, "No, no, don't take me seriously. Everything I know about medicine is from my brother and Grey's Anatomy, I'm not that good–"
"–you might want to stitch yourself up before you start doing any of that, but we might make a doctor out of you someday…" He pauses for dramatic effect, "as long as we keep you out of doghouse."
"And you've got jokes." You sneer lightly. "Doctor by day, stage comedian by night. Is that how you paid your way through med school?"
"Maybe," Dr. Langdon pulls the curtain back as he keeps his eyes locked on you, "Can I count on you coming to one of my shows?"
"Maybe," You respond rather coyly before you notice two nurses curiously peering into your room, "Hi, umm… can I help you?"
"So you're Casanova…" One of the female nurses watches as you and Langdon avoid each other's gazes, "I heard you were involved in a bet with the night shift."
"Not on purpose," You begin to explain, "but I–"
"–how much for you to kiss Pretty Boy on 'accident'?"
If there was a word stronger than mortifying, that'd describe how you feel right now. You fear that Dr. Langdon may be feeling the same way, but he laughs to himself and wears a strong smile — damn your heart for rapidly beating against your ribcage — at her teasing.
"Alright, Perlah, Princess, show's over," Donnie quickly approaches and shuts the curtains as he holds a suture kit and a roll of bandages in his hands, "Sorry about them."
"Don't apologize unless you're going to put me out of my misery." You warn before you look towards your doctor for the last time. "It was nice to meet you, Dr. Langdon. And, again, I am so fucking sorry for everything–"
"–It was nice to meet you too." He lingers, for perhaps a little longer than what's considered friendly, before he ducks out of the room.
Donnie watches Dr. Langdon exit before he turns back to you.
"You two get along well–"
"–don't play matchmaker. I deal with enough of that shit from Natalie," You let Donnie place the back of your hand on the guardrail of the bed as you speak, "She likes to joke that I've never met a stranger, but I've met plenty of strange people over the years. Including her."
"Pinprick and a little burning," He injects a local anesthetic into the wound on your hand, "A minute or two, and you'll be numbed up."
"Can I watch?" Intrigued, you lean forward as Donnie prepares the suture. "The Padawan will not interrupt the Jedi Master, I swear."
"May the Force be with us."
You light up, like a kid on Christmas Day, when he catches your reference. Of course, most people do know Star Wars, but you lost faith in anyone else matching your nerdiness when Natalie fell asleep during the open credits of A New Hope. She claimed to be interested, as she only saw bits and pieces of the Star Wars movies when she was younger, but that was quickly proven to be false.
Maybe I should make her watch those movies with me while I'm recovering from this injury… and, if she's really up for a challenge, we can watch the Lord of the Rings movies next.
You exchange idle, nerdy conversation with Donnie as he patches you up, starting with your hand after he cleans and bandages the injury on your ankle. You haven't had anyone to discuss such things with since your college days, so it's nice to have someone to talk to about your favorite animated film of the year before you switch topics and debate with Marvel superhero would be the best first date.
Donnie claims that you picked Daredevil because Charlie Cox is hot. You argue that anyone donning the mask of Daredevil is automatically hot in your books… but Charlie Cox being easy on the eyes certainly doesn't hurt.
Sooner than you'd like, he clears you after doing some handiwork that not even your brother, the prodigal son of prodigal sons, could manage on your arms, face, and feet. Soon after, you're sent up to get a CT, where you meet a very familiar CT technologist who isn't too happy to see you back up in his domain. He's quick on his feet, talking you through a procedure he's does a hundred times a day, if not more, and you're sent back down to the emergency department in record time.
Afterwards, you're rolled towards your room, where Natalie anxiously waits for you. You feel a bit guilty for your earlier treatment of her, so an apology exits your mouth the moment you're alone with her.
"Nat, I'm–"
"–I think you looked better with the glass shards in your face," She throws a taunt that sounds like it's from your repertoire at you, "really fits the edgy vibe you're usually going for."
No apology for you, Nat. Not today.
"Fuck off," You roll your eyes before you rest your hand on top of hers, "How was the hospital food?"
"Curiosity killed the cat," She rubs her stomach as she grimaces, "Donnie was right. Do not get the tuna melt."
"Just desserts," You smile victoriously, "and, I've decided on your punishment."
"Punishment?" She echoes while pointing to herself. "My punishment? I didn't do anything wrong!"
"You're binge-watching–"
"–don't you say it–"
"–all of the Star Wars movies when I get out of the hospital."
"But they're so boring," Nat complains with a shrill tone, "you never pick a good movie! And don't get me started on your TV show picks — those are even worse!"
"Riverdale is peak television if you don't take it seriously!" You argue.
"That is not how you define good TV," Nat groans, pulling at the skin of her face with her free hand, "why'd I have to get stuck with the roommate who binge-watches Ninjago for fun once a year–"
"–God forbid I like an animated TV show, I guess–"
"—You have the weirdest taste in everything, I swear." She chews on her bottom lip before she brings up an old memory. "Remember when I set you up with that cute guy in our Chem class, and you fumbled because you brought him to the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum on a first date?"
"He said he liked history!" You squawk back before Nat easily picks through your defense.
"He said he liked history because he wanted to sleep with you, not go on a guided tour through some old dead guy's house."
"I thought it was fun." You mumble. "Besides, what was I supposed to do? Take him to Chili's?"
"Yes!"
"But dinner dates aren't my style. They're expensive and some guys are weird about paying for dinner. You do it, they get offended. They do it," You sigh, rolling your eyes as you remember a particularly bad date, "they expect you to… put out."
You and Nat make a similar noise of disgust at that one.
"Thank God I'm a lesbian." She chuckles to herself. "Hear me out, though — taking some guy to a historical museum is not a cute first date idea!"
"It can be!" You're gonna die on this hill, and so is Nat, because she ropes the first person to walk your way into the argument.
…And it's Dr. Langdon. Great.
"Dr. Langdon!" Your friend is far too cheerful as she waves him over. "We need you to settle a debate—"
"—there's no debate, really," You're immediately apologetic towards Dr. Langdon, "since I'm right—"
"—bullshit." Nat rolls her eyes. "Anyways, do you think that a museum is a good first date idea?"
"It depends on who you're asking out." Dr. Langdon shrugs as a smirk settles on Nat's face.
"That's such a boring answer. Fine. If someone," Subtle is not your best friend's strong suit as she looks right at you, "were to ask you on a date, and they told you that they're gonna take you to a museum, would you accept?"
"Yeah," You feel relief at his answer before he glances at you, "I would, but I grew up going to the Fort Pitt Museum with my parents every summer. I'm more of a history nut than your average doctor."
You and Natalie have completely different responses to his statement.
"That's so cool!"
"Oh my God, you two are so uncool!"
"Maybe you're the uncool one, Nat," You meet Dr. Langdon's eyes, despite the heavy flush on your face, "you're outnumbered, two-to-one."
"That's so not fair," She whines when the doctor nods his head in silent agreement with you, "Not you too!"
"Three-to-one," Donnie fist bumps Dr. Langdon after he hands the latter a tablet, "you've been overruled."
"Suck it." You whisper under your breath before Nat lightly punches your shoulder.
"Bitch–"
"–Jackass–"
"–your head CT looks good." Dr. Langdon interrupts, spinning the tablet around so you can look at the imaging of the brain.
"That's sick," Nat leans in to get a closer look, "there's less empty space than I expected–"
"–you are such a–" You cut yourself off, sneering in disapproval instead of cussing, "–Am I cleared for takeoff?"
"Almost, Space Ranger. Donnie's going to get you caught up on your vaccines first." Dr. Langdon teasingly says. "You got big plans?"
"Do you?" You've managed to gain back some semblance of your usual persona, throwing him and the nurse off-guard as they exchange looks.
Donnie smiles in amusement as Dr. Langdon chuckles and shakes his head, brown hair sweeping across his blue eyes.
"Keep an eye on the bite on your ankle. If there's any signs of infection, come back and see me."
You can't help but pick apart his phrasing. Come back and see him. Not 'come back to the hospital, where any doctor can treat you'. Just him.
"I will, Dr. Langdon. I promise." You whisper, completely forgetting about the other two people in the room.
"Langdon's fine." Dr. Langdon — no, just Langdon — corrects you before he walks away, leaving you in a little bit of shock and awe.
You don't need to look over at Nat in order to picture the shit-eating grin on her face.
"We're dropping the honorifics now, are we?"
"Shut up, Natalie!"
~
After all of that embarrassment, you thought that you were in for a relaxing, calm afternoon where you could lick your physical and emotional wounds — the latter being much worse than the former because you really fumbled the ball in that hospital room — in privacy.
Unfortunately, you didn't think much of Nat sending a quick text to someone before she took off towards your shared apartment, until you arrived home to see none other than Jack Abbot waiting for you.
"You little snitch!"
"Jack asked me to contact him if you needed him but refused to call," Nat smiles to herself. "He knows you a little too well."
"It wasn't an emergency–" You try to justify your actions, but you lose steam when Jack's eyebrows furrow as he folds his arms over his chest. "–you're right. I should've called. The whole thing was so embarrassing, since Nat's dog caused me to trip–"
"–I heard," He whispers, a gentle pause ruminating through the air until he grins at you, "I guess you can cross dog whisperer off of your resume."
"Jesus Christ, Jack, I thought you were mad at me," You exhale in relief, applying the smallest amount of pressure possible to the ankle with the puncture wounds in it as you walk over to him, "thank you for coming over."
"Of course," One of his hands go to your waist to support you as he uses the fingers on his other hand to trace the stitches and scars that litter your arm and hand, only stopping once he gets to your cheek, "Looks good."
"The stitches or me?" You joke before you sigh. "I really hope you're talking about the stitches, 'cause I feel like shit."
"You look like a million bucks!" Nat tries to be encouraging, but you quickly shoot her down.
"I look like a one-dollar bill that's been through the washer one too many times," You chuckle at your own joke before you peel Jack's hand off of your face, meeting his strong, worried gaze with your own, "I'm fine, Jack. Really. The day shift took good care of me."
"Robby?"
"Nope!" Nat cheerfully answers as Jack leads you to the couch, carefully avoiding the shattered glass so there's not a repeat emergency room trip within twenty-fours, "Langdon. Well, he's Dr. Langdon to me, but–"
She shuts up with a pointed glare from you, quietly claiming a corner seat as you and Jack take up the couch. You, as to not disturb his prosthetic, carefully place your leg on his lap before he rolls up the cuff of your pants to get a better look at your ankle.
"Cleaned and bandaged," Your face flushes as his fingers brush against the wrapping, "plus I'm up-to-date on my shots in case Mr. Fluffles was carrying any diseases in-between those grubby little teeth of his–"
"–my dog is not diseased, he's just–" Nat frantically looks around for said hellish creature before she runs out of the room, "Mr. Fluffles! Where are you, buddy?"
You sigh, running a hand through your hair.
"It's been a long fucking day already, and it's only…" You check your phone, blinking in rapid disbelief at the time displayed on the home screen, "two in the afternoon."
Jack doesn't answer, his eyes still fixated on that injury of yours — he can't possibly be blaming himself for this, right?
Oh God, what if he is? You certainly don't blame anyone but yourself for your brief trip to Glass-Shards-In-Your-Skin City — well, maybe you do blame Nat for owning that damn dog and not making sure he's up-to-date on his shots — but Jack would be the last person you'd pin this on. He wasn't even here when the shitstorm went down, why would he—
Your eyes go back down to your phone, where you see the unread message from Jack at the top of your notifications. The one you may or may not have been ignoring for ages.
Why don't you come and stay with me for a few days?
A yes or no question. That's really what it was, but it sent your mind spiraling. If you did accept, would he ask you to move in after those few days were up? What were a few days, anyways?
Or, more horrifyingly, you're worried about losing what you have. The easy, simple relationship that exists without names. If you took one of those formal relationship steps, you'd have to name what you and Jack are, and that scares you.
It's not like you're scared of commitment; rather, you're scared of someone not committing to you. What if they don't like you when they truly get to know you? Your parents didn't (and still don't, based on the sparse conversations you've had with them) like the parts of you that weren't pristine, perfect, and well-planned. Ex-lover after ex-lover left because you weren't what they thought you were — what if Jack did the same?
You're thinking too hard about this. A few days isn't forever. You're still young, still deciding what you want to do with the rest of your life. Hell, you don't even know if you want to stay in Pittsburgh if you get a really good job offer from one of the companies that you've been applying to.
But then, Jack's eyes snap up to yours, and any thoughts of leaving this city exit your mind. Perhaps you could find something better in this city, and you could stay and explore deeper feelings with someone that you've formed a genuine, real connection with.
Yeah, that does sound nice.
"I'm sorry that I haven't responded to you," You murmur as guilt squeezes your guarded heart, "I've been… thinking about what you asked me."
"And?"
An open-ended question from Jack, delivered softly and without a trace of guilt-tripping. He wants you to live with him, but only if you want that too.
"A few days away from that troublemaker couldn't hurt," You play coy, but your true feelings spill from your lips right afterwards, "My answer is yes. I'd really like to stay with you, Jack, if the offer's still open."
The skin around his eyes crinkles as he flashes you a familiar, handsome smile that still makes your heart race, all of these months later.
"I think I can manage to squeeze you into my timetable."
It was different — a nice sort of different, compared to the day-to-day chaos and shenanigans that came with being roommates with your best friend — to stay with Jack for a few days. You didn't have to worry about a damn dog chewing up your favorite pair of shoes, or Natalie waking you up at the crack of dawn because she thought that her favorite blouse got mixed up with your laundry, somehow.
(It didn't, and she bought you a large, fancy latte from your favorite coffee shop as an apology.)
Quiet. Serene. Comfortable. That's what this was. Waking up when your alarm goes off, and not a second before, to the scent of something delicious wafting into Jack's bedroom from the kitchen was heavenly. Especially when you were presented with the sight of none other than Dr. Jack Abbot in a plain-colored t-shirt that you swore was one size too small.
If you didn't wake up starving, you would've had him for breakfast, instead.
Although you're tempted to ignore your own hunger for a more insatiable beast stirring inside of you, you chose to temporarily settle those thoughts by wrapping your arms around his stomach. You placed your mouth against Jack's shoulder for a quick kiss to the area, and your lips curled into a smile when his thumb strokes a patch of skin on your forearm.
"Good morning," You gazed at Jack after he turned his head to look at what you were doing, "or good afternoon, good evening, good night…"
You buried your head in his shoulder to stifle a tiny yawn before you felt him peck the top of your head.
"Good morning," Jack gently smiled as he took in your messy hair and crumpled pajamas, "you slept well."
"How do you know?" You pulled your head away from his body as you wiped the sleep from your eyes.
"You look like you lost a fight with my bedsheets."
"Aren't you charming this morning?" You hummed lightly, fixing your hair and clothes so you look halfway presentable before you peeled yourself off of Jack. "I bet I'd look great as a runaway model, even in my pajamas. How was your shift?"
"Same as usual," Jack sighed, "Although, there weren't any vigilantes who tried to save the city of Pittsburgh from cat burglars or tiny dogs."
"You're lucky," You wore a sheepish grin as he turned to face you, "I hear those patients are lots of trouble."
"Trust me," His hand went to your cheek, "I know. I have professional and personal experience with one."
"Hopefully you don't bring them all home with you…" You murmured before you pressed your lips to his, savoring a sweet morning kiss before you started your day, "You didn't have to make breakfast, Jack, I could've–"
"–I wanted to." It was hard not to bend to his will when he was this close to you. "You're leaving tomorrow."
"I'm thinking about leaving tomorrow," You corrected him, "Nat's still working on the adoption paperwork for Mr. Fluffles. He's supposed to be picked up by his new family tomorrow, but… I think she's gonna have some trouble letting him go."
"She's having second thoughts?"
"No, that dog was just… special to her," You explained, "Nat grew up in a large family, and while we were college roommates, we always shared an apartment with at least one other person. She's always been more comfortable in a group setting than by herself. …Nat really struggled to live by herself until she saw an advertisement on a street lamp for one pesky Pomeranian that was more trouble than he was worth."
You pinched the bridge of your nose with two fingers as your other hand settled on your hip.
"It wasn't my idea to get rid of him. I would've been happy if she bought him a new cage to sleep in since he, somehow, got out of the other one."
Jack chuckled.
"Sounds like Houdini was reborn as a dog."
"That's what I said!" You were quite pleased that he agreed with you, until you remembered that this would be the last time you'd get this small, sweet, stolen moments with Jack. After this, you'd be back to impromptu sleepovers after sex and weekly dates that didn't satisfy your soul.
What if I didn’t leave permanently? I could make a split living situation work.
"Jack," You spoke his name with tenderness, waiting for his gaze to meet yours, "I'd like to stay with you on the weekends, if that's okay with you. I know you have to work those nights on occasion, but it'd be nice to see each other for a few hours a week, at least."
Because I love you were the unsaid words at the end of that sentence.
"I'd like that," He paused, "You don't mind–?"
"–The nonexistent mess and clutter? The fact that I get to spend what little free time I have with you?" You shook your head, a teasing smile splayed on your lips, "You know I like being around you, right?"
"You do?" He was playing around with you, but you swore you saw genuine surprise on his face when you pressed a kiss to his cheek.
"Yup. That's my big secret. I have a massive crush on the attending who works the night shift at the Pitt. Don't tell him, though."
"Shen won't hear a word from me–"
"–Jack!"
You've quickly discovered that you do like this arrangement. You get to spend your weeknights binge-watching TV and joking around with your best friend, and then you get metaphorically swept off of your feet at the week's end by Jack. Maybe it's not always the most romantic scene, especially when he picks up an extra shift or two despite his already-terrible sleep schedule, but you like waking up next to Jack when you’ve had a rough week. His presence alone, even with the absence of his voice, is enough to draw you back to the safety and security of sleep.
This is great. Everything's great.
…Except that Natalie and Kayla — because just one of them isn't enough, apparently — keep bringing up Langdon.
Dr. Langdon. You've really gotta get that through your head. Sure, he asked you to call him by his last name only, but that was probably meant as a friendly gesture, right?
You're starting to get deja-vu to ten months ago, but you refuse to acknowledge that feeling. If you ignore it, it'll go away… hopefully.
Besides, there was no extended emergency room stay for you to get to know Langdon — Dr. Langdon — in. A once-and-done trip to the emergency room, where your tongue tied itself in knots and refused to cooperate with you.
He's one of those people you meet once and never again, there's no need to—
"Okay, I know this can only be answered on the theoretical level for one of them," Nat swirls the wine around in her glass as you reach for the bottle to refill yours, "but who's the better kisser?"
You unscrew the lid of the half-empty bottle, and, to the surprise of your roommate and her landlord-turned-lover, you take a swig straight from the bottom.
"Gross–"
"–Damn, Nat, that was gonna be my answer to your question." You roll your eyes. "Why do you two care? Neither of you like men!"
"You're awfully defensive over what should be an easy answer." Nat points out, and you pray that the flush on your face is due to the alcohol you're consuming. "It should be Jack."
"Or, they're thinking about Dr. Pretty Boy." Kayla places her face in her hand as she glances up at you. "His hands wandering all over their body as they–"
"–Stop!" You half-shriek, half-whine before you take a long drink from the wine bottle. "Don't you two have to be up early?"
"I'm getting my wisdom teeth removed at nine, and I'm not supposed to eat anything past midnight. I'll be fine." Nat reassures you. "You're deflecting. You've been thinking about Dr. Langdon, haven't you?"
"…No?"
Could I possibly sound any less convincing?
"And I'm the Queen of England–"
"–you two fucking suck." Your elbows hit the kitchen counter top as you wave the metaphorical white flag. "Okay, fine, you win. I've been thinking about Langdon because you two keep bringing him up."
"You don't stop us when we do." Kayla smirks when you try to stutter out a defense.
"I… That's not… No, wait a minute!" Your lips twist off to the side as you attempt to gain control over your fleeting thoughts. "There is no thing here. You and Nat are making something out of nothing. I met him once, and as long as Natalie doesn't plan on throwing herself down any stairs during the daylight hours, we're fine!"
…Karma is a silly, silly thing.
You go to bed, in two minds about two men, cursing your best friend and her girlfriend-but-not-yet-girlfriend for bringing up Dr. Langdon once more. Sure, he's handsome and charming and dorky (but not dorkier than you) and exactly the type of guy you'd go up to at a bar if you were too drunk to think about the high possibility that he'd reject you to your face and—
I need to chill the fuck out. Immediately.
Tossing and turning doesn't stop you from getting a few hours of sleep, and you pull yourself from your bed to wish Nat good luck before she goes off for her wisdom teeth removal. She made you promise not to record her if she said something stupid, but would you really be her best friend if you didn't memorialize such an occasion?
If Nat truly said or did something that bad, and not just a slip of the tongue, you'd delete it… or, you'd keep it hidden in your phone's storage as future blackmail. She kept that video of you smashing your face into her glass coffee table so she could show it to everyone, including Jack, who then shared that video with the entire night shift.
You appreciated the little glass bear figurine from Ellis a little less than the bundle of roses that she gave you the first time, considering that the gift came with a note that said: 'Make sure to keep this away from dogs and floors, Casanova.'
You'd have thought it was funny if you didn't get a glass coffee mug from Dr. Shen, a glass rose from Lena, and a miniature glass Christmas ornament in the shape of a glass table — where the fuck would you find that, anyway? — from Dr. Walsh.
Oh, they're all hilarious. I bet they coordinated this.
Because of all that, your roommate can deal with a five-second video of her drooling in exchange for the humiliation that your recent trip to the ER caused you.
God, Langdon probably thinks I'm an idiot—
Nope. No, no, no, you have to stop thinking about that attractive doctor who may, or may not, have been flirting with you.
…Jury's still out on that one.
You hear a small knock on the front door, and you yell that the door's unlocked before someone storms into the apartment all of a sudden.
"Wheeeeeeeee!" Nat excitedly flaps her arms as if they're wings before she attempts to speak with a mouth full of gauze. "I'm trying to fly!"
"Keep going, bud," You grab your phone as you stand in the doorway that leads from your room to the mutual living space in the apartment, "you're gonna be TikTok famous–"
"–do not encourage her." Kayla groans as she holds a pamphlet of care instructions in her hands. "She already tried to jump out of my car, and I had to physically restrain her before she threw herself down the stairs. Were you this bad when you got your wisdom teeth removed?"
"Umm," You chew on your bottom lip, trying your best not to explode with laughter as your friend collapses on the couch face-first, "No, but I don't really remember anything. Everyone said I was really tired, and that I slept through most of the day until the anesthetic wore off."
"Great." Kayla taps her black stiletto heel against the ground twice before her gaze snaps over to you. "Listen, I know I said I would take care of her–"
"–Kayla, don't you dare–"
"–Something came up." She's rather curt as she pulls her coat tighter around her shoulders. "A tenant dispute. I'd much rather be here, but I have to settle this. I'll be back in a few hours. Make sure she's still breathing by then."
"Breathing? That's a low bar," You pause, realizing that Natalie's not laying on the couch, "Nat?"
You quickly spin around before you spy your best friend trying to open a window. The window that you took an unfortunate nosedive out off months ago.
"Natalie!" You take off at a speed unknown to man, wrapping your arms around her waist before you wrangle her back towards the couch. "You don't wanna do that. Trust me. Not a pleasant experience."
"But I could fly!" She whines as you throw a few blankets on top of her, if only to prevent her from trying to take flight again.
"Why don't you go to sleep and see if you can fly in your dreams, huh?" You pat Nat's shoulders reassuringly until she falls asleep the moment her head hits the pillow. "Jesus Christ. Is this what I'm in for all day?"
"Yup," Kayla offers you a sympathetic salute before she closes the front door of the apartment, "See you later."
"Wait, you didn't give me that–" You sigh deeply when the door shuts before you can get your full sentence out. "–pamphlet."
You run a nervous hand through your hair, unsure of what to do until Nat moans in pain.
"Right, right, uh…" You cycle through sparse memories of getting your wisdom teeth removed nearly ten years ago. Ice packs and medication for pain and swelling, and soft, cool, liquid foods for twenty-four to four-eighty hours. Okay, this will be easy. You've got this! "Gimme a second. I'll be right back."
You rush into the kitchen, grabbing a spare ice pack that you wrap in a dish towel before you offer it to your roommate.
"Better?" You softly ask, and she slowly nods, seemingly drifting back off to sleep with less pain.
I should probably check if we have any Jello or pudding for her to eat. If not, I'll have to have someone deliver some to the apartment because I don't trust her to be on her own right now.
And to think that you took today off because you had a little vacation time to burn up.
A 'vacation day', my ass.
Thankfully, you do have a small box of instant vanilla pudding that will hopefully get you through the next few hours, and then you can force Kayla to go get some more as a punishment for dumping Nat onto you suddenly.
Your mind wanders as you grab the necessary ingredients and tools — cold milk, a medium-sized mixing bowl, a spatula to stir with — and you can't help but be disappointed that you're stuck babysitting your friend all day.
I was going to try and sneak over to Jack's place as a nice surprise, but apparently life has other plans for me. Maybe I can hand Natalie over if Kayla's tenant dispute doesn't last too long?
Fuck, who am I kidding? I'm gonna be here all day.
Once the mixture turns a solid white color, you set the bowl into an empty spot into your shared fridge and— Shit, someone really should throw out those old leftovers.
Well, since you have nothing better to do, you accidentally spend thirty minutes reorganizing the fridge exactly as you would like it while you throw out any expired or moldy foods.
Thirty minutes would be nothing on a day that your best friend isn't heavily medicated from oral surgery. Perhaps she would've joined you after she mocked you for being so specific about where everything went.
You only think to check on her when you place one of her Tupperware contains, marked with a N and a heart drawn in black Sharpie on the lid, on the bottom shelf of the fridge.
Shit, Nat!
"Nat?" You shut the fridge door before you peer over the couch once you enter the living room and — surprise, surprise — she's not there.
And, more concerningly, your front door is open.
Shit, shit, shit, shit!
"Natalie!" You sprint out of that door, running up and down the hall before you throw open the door to the staircase that leads down to the first floor, or up to the third or four floors. Your mouth hangs open, limbs tightening as you spot her at the bottom of the flight of stairs, curled up in the fetal position. "Natalie!"
"I'm good!" She holds a thumb up in the air as you do your best to not join her by not falling down the stairs and landing on your ass beside her. "My, uh… depth perception is a little off."
"You promise you didn't try to fly down the stairs?" You ask, and you place a hand on her chest when she tries to get up. "You shouldn't move. Fuck, Natalie, I have to call an ambulance–"
"–where's Kayla?" Nat seems genuinely hurt that Kayla isn't the one by her side at this moment.
"She had to take care of something, but I've got you, Nat." Your hands shake as tears poke at your eyes. "God, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to take that much time up, but I saw something that needed to get done, and you know how laser-focused I get on shit like that–"
"–it's not your fault," She murmurs as she adjusts the gauze in her mouth, "Hey, does this mean that we could see Dr. Langdon in the emergency department since it's early?"
"Of all the things to think of," You grumble, "Maybe. I don't know, it might be his day off. Who knows. Let's get you to the hospital first, okay?"
"Okay," She nods in agreement before she flashes you a wicked grin, "I was so fucking with you and Kayla when I pretended to be a bird. 'Can't believe you guys bought that shit."
"Awww, I thought it was real," You pout before a hand lingers on the pants pocket that holds your phone, "I even got a video of it."
Nat slaps your leg with her right arm before she winces in pain.
"You are a fucking asshole!"
~
"What am I gonna do with you, huh?" You joke as you switch out the gauze in Natalie's mouth. "You better hope that you didn't break anything."
"You didn't have to call an ambulance," She whines as sirens wail from a few blocks away, "I don't feel any pain–"
"–that's call adrenaline. You landed on your side, right?" You wait for Nat to nod before she continues. "You could've hurt your wrist, your shoulder, your leg–"
"–you worry too much." Nat places a hand on the back of her head, twisting her face into an expression of discomfort and pain. "I think I might've hit my head. The lights hurt my eyes."
"Then shut 'em." You quietly say. "You can't fall asleep, though. You have to stay awake, even if you feel really, really tired–"
"–I want you to come with me," Nat suddenly grabs your hand, gripping it tightly, "I don't wanna be alone. I'm scared."
"That's the anesthesia talking. You are fucking fearless," You do your best to distract your friend with some light-hearted chatter, "Nat, you came up to me first. I'm not from Pittsburgh, and I didn't know anyone in our freshman class. It would've taken me months to build the confidence to ask someone to go for coffee, and you invited me out five minutes after we met."
"I take pity on the ugly little ducklings of the world." She jokes. "To be honest, I thought you were kinda uncool since you had a bunch of nerdy pins on your backpack–"
"–hey, they're cool to me!" You argue back. "I can't go with you, Nat, but I'll be right behind the ambulance the whole time. Just like I was when you got those bad burns on your body."
"Can you bring Kayla with you?"
"I'll… try, but no promises." You step away from Nat when you hear a pair of paramedics charging up the stairs. "I'll go grab my keys. You're gonna be fine."
"Thank you," She murmurs before she calls out to you once you're at the top of the stairs, "I love you!"
"Love you too," You holler back before you mutter additional commentary under your breath, "but you are a pain in my ass sometimes."
By the time you change into presentable clothes, grab something quick for a late breakfast, and then grab your car keys from the foyer, the paramedics have cleared Nat out of the stairway. You watch your step as you descend down the stairs because the last thing you need at the moment is to be in the hospital at the same time as your roommate.
You start your car, sending a quick text to Kayla to alert her of the situation before you pull out of the parking lot.
It's kinda shameful that you know the fastest way to the hospital, down to which stoplights go from red to green the fastest, but this niche knowledge comes in hand for the two clumsiest people in the world.
I used to refuse that title, but it's true. I am a klutz at heart.
You're trying to think positive thoughts about Natalie, but your radio refuses to join in as the local DJ plays Highway to Hell, Don't Fear the Reaper, and Another One Bites the Dust back-to-back-to-back.
You switch radio stations when the first few notes of Knockin' on Heaven's Door plays.
I'm almost there, Nat. Hold on!
Your parking job in the hospital parking lot would most definitely cause you to fail your driver's license exam, but you can't be bothered to give a shit as you're (barely) in-between both lines and you have more important things to attend to at the moment.
It takes you an excruciating long time — twenty minutes, if the clock in the hospital waiting room is correct — to talk to someone about where Nat's located. You feel like you're speaking inconsequential, inaudible words to the hospital clerk in the emergency department, but she manages to gather your friend's name through your panicked, shaky voice.
"Central Fifteen, waiting for a head CT if you wanna go back and see her." The front clerk's calm voice helps you calm down, even as you're nervously wringing your hands.
"I would, thank you." You nod rapidly before she presses a small button on her desk, opening up the double doors that lead into the emergency department.
It is packed in here during the day, with beds taking up the hallways alongside the busy nurses and doctors that are treating patients or charting when they're not treating patients. With all of the buzz, you're able to slip through relatively unnoticed until a nurse by the name of Vivi stops you and asks if you need some assistance.
"I'm looking for Central Fifteen?" You ask, and you're immediately grateful when she points at a door a few feet ahead of you. "Thank you, I really–"
"–do I know you?"
"Huh?" Your head snaps to the left, and you meet the eyes of a man that you've only seen pictures of in Jack's phone. The one, the only, Dr. Micheal Robinavitch is standing behind the central desk while he looks right at you.
"Your voice sounds familiar."
And, as the cherry on top, he recognizes your voice from a singular phone call that happened months ago.
Fuck me.
"No, but I get that a lot. There's a famous radio personality who sounds a lot like me," You lie through your teeth as he narrows his eyes at you, "I'm here to visit a friend who's having a really bad day, so if you'll excuse me…"
You practically sprint towards your friend's room, not waiting to see if Dr. Robby chases after you to poke through your flimsy defense. You assumed that Jack didn't mention anything about you to the day shift attending, and you certainly did not want to be the one to open that can of worms with him. Especially not today of all days.
Taking a hard right, you nearly dive into Nat's room, but you hesitate once you see the doctor that's at her bedside.
And, of course, it can't be any other doctor in this fucking hospital. It has to be Langdon, doesn't it?
Dr. Langdon.
"They're super cool," Nat appears to be in good spirits as she, with a sling on her right arm, chats with the doctor, "We fight and tease each other a lot, but I can't imagine anyone else being my best friend and my roommate."
You grin like an idiot since she has yet to notice your presence at the door. Sure, Nat can feel like a sister that you didn't ask for — one that steals your leftovers, accidentally turns your white shirts pink by washing them with unlike colors, and wreaks absolute chaos on your dating life for personal entertainment — but you can't imagine a world where she's not your best friend and closest confidante.
"And…" Nat leans closer, placing her hand on the railing of the bed, "I think they have a thing for you."
Perhaps you can imagine a world without Natalie. One where you strangle her to death for embarrassing you over and over again. She may possibly be the world's worst wingwoman, except when she gets third-degree burns all over her body and causes you to cross paths with a doctor that you never thought you'd see again.
And here we are, yet again…
"Natalie." You speak in a tone that you've heard her dad use when he's mad mad at her, and her head immediately snaps in your direction.
"Hey!" She waves at you, despite the deadpan expression you give her in return, and you're only motivated to move when Dr. Langdon flashes you that smile, a smile that has occupied more time in your thoughts than you'd like to say. "Don't look at me like that. I didn't say anything embarrassing about you! It was all good things. Right, Dr. Langdon?"
"Yeah, yeah, all good things," His eyes don't leave yours as you dare to walk into the room, "Natalie told me that you went to Fort Pitt Museum on Thursday?"
"I did. I figured it was about time I visited some local museums, " You smile fondly as you remember dragging Natalie through all of the exhibits, "Thanks for the recommendation."
It wasn't a recommendation. You couldn't get Langdon out of your mind, so you thought this would help.
…It did not.
"You're welcome, I…" Dr. Langdon pauses for a moment, "Really, I should be thanking you. My kids loved the Hoover-Price Planetarium."
…Pause.
He said the Hoover-Price Planetarium, as in the planetarium inside of McKinley Presidential Library and Museum. As in the Presidential Library that you told him about on what you would consider as one of the most embarrassing days of your life, where you thought you royally screwed up his first impression of you.
Dr. Langdon — Fuck, who are you kidding, you should just call him Langdon at this point — took your off-handed mention of a place you visited once over five years ago as a positive, glowing review, so he took his kids there.
Holy shit. Maybe you weren't that much of a wreck after all.
He might've been flirting with me, too. …Oh God, am I that oblivious?
"They did?" You feel a bit of nervous crawl into your voice. "Good. I'm glad. …Did you?"
Silence. The world melts away, and the beeping of hospital monitors and the busyness of doctors rushing back and forth slips into the background.
Langdon's looking right at you, blue eyes slicing through your anatomy.
You're not looking away.
"I did. It was… nice." He struggles to land on the right word as you brush past him, fingers aching to touch his before you resist the urge of such improper conduct… while the door to Natalie's room is wide open. "I'm always looking for new places to take–"
"–there's two more presidential libraries in Ohio." You interrupt him, casually taking your place on the other side of the bed, opposite of Langdon. "Harding's is nice, but I'd love the chance to see the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center since it's one of the first few presidential libraries that were ever built. It's a shame that it's so far away, though."
"A three and a half hour drive isn't that bad."
Your breath catches at his words.
"You looked into it?"
"Well, I thought it might be a good idea to take Tanner and Penny to the other two…" Langdon trails off, smiling earnestly, "plus, I wanted to brush up on my presidential history, in case you came back around."
In case you came back around.
He wanted you to come back around, and, selfishly, you might've been looking for a reason to come back around, too.
You sneakily pinch the back of your hand. Unsurprisingly, it hurts.
You are not making this shit up as a part of some weird fever dream.
At a loss for words, your mouth hangs slightly open as you try to think of something to say.
Words fail you, at the moment.
Your nosy best friend does not.
"You've got to be kidding me. That was the layup of the century," Nat reaches over and lightly smacks the back of Langdon's hand, causing you to chuckle lightly, "and that was the fumble of the century. I told you they would like a cute museum date–"
"–hey, no setting me up on random dates until you're feeling better." You scold your best friend, who rolls her eyes in return. "I hope you kept the embarrassing stories to a minimum."
"Those cost money," She sticks her nose up at you, "I wouldn't sell you out for free."
"…Thanks? I guess?" You shake your head before your eyes meet Langdon's once more, and your heart skips a beat when you realize that he has yet to look away from you. God, is it getting hot in here or what? "How's she doing? Anything broken or—"
"–sprained shoulder and a lot of bruises, but we're doing a Head CT to cover our bases." Langdon glances at Nat. "She's lucky. A fall like that could've caused some serious internal damage."
"I lived, and I have a fun story to tell when I play Two Truths and a Lie," She winks in the most dramatic fashion possible, "I'll be taking the elevator for a while, though. No more stairs for me!"
"You do know that people get hurt on elevators too–"
"–La, la, la, not listening!" Nat tunes you out, perking up slightly when a couple of nurses come into the room to take her up for her scan. "I'll see you lovebirds soon! I better hear about your first date plans when I come back, or else!"
"Uh-huh." You breathe in, then out before one final tease comes out of your mouth. "I still have that video of you from earlier!"
The last thing you see before she disappears behind a wall is her flipping you off with a middle finger raised proudly into the air, causing the nurses and doctors that pass by her to laugh under their breaths.
"Nat's something, ain't she?" You rub your forehead with one of your hands, suddenly feeling a bit awkward as you don't have Natalie as a physical buffer between you and Langdon anymore. It's weird, but not a bad sort of weird. "She enjoys putting me in awkward situations and watching me suffer. It's almost like a game to her. I'm so sorry–"
"–don't apologize." He's a bit more stern as he addresses you. "I asked Natalie about you first."
He asked Nat about me?
You're gonna throw up from nervous excitement.
"You asked about me?"
"Why wouldn't I?" Langdon says, like it's the most obvious thing in the world. "You made a good first impression."
"I had a glass shard in my cheek–"
"–that wasn't the first thing I saw when I looked at you." He quietly admits.
You can't possibly take the sincerity in his voice — he has to be fucking with you, he must be — so you crack another joke.
"Right, right, I forgot about the one in my hand–"
"–I'm being serious." Langdon deadpans, and you immediately shut your mouth so you can listen to him. "You have a way of putting everyone at ease the moment they meet you. It's impressive."
"Careful, Langdon," You warn him, lightly kicking your foot into the air as to release some of the nervous energy that's wound up in your body, "It almost sounds like you're flirting with me."
"Almost?" He wears a small grin. "I must be out of touch, then."
This is actually happening. Oh my God.
"Ah," You chew on your bottom lip, enjoying the warm flush that rests on your cheeks, "Y'know, if you're free next week, we could take a trip to Ohio and visit the presidential library that's in Fremont. It'd be nice to have some company for such a long drive."
"Thursday?"
Langdon's serious, as are you.
"I can make that work." Your eyes widen when you see Kayla at the door of Nat's room. "Come on in, Kayla. You're not interrupting."
"I'm not?" She seems confused as you walk past Langdon, slipping through the space between Kayla and the doorframe so you can enter the hallway in the emergency department. "I can wait outside if you're–"
"–Nah. I said my piece. Langdon can tell you everything about Nat." You pull out your phone, immediately marking yourself as unavailable next Thursday for personal reasons. "Call me when you're headed back to the apartment."
"Wait," You turn on your heel to face Langdon after you hear him speak, "I don't have your number."
Kayla's eyebrows jump up to the ceiling before they land back on her face as you softly shrug in response.
"Nat's got it." You grin like an idiot at the thought of going out with him. "I'll see you on Thursday, right?"
"Yeah," Your excitement seems to be shared by Langdon as he answers you, "I'll see you then."

summary: Your two eventful encounters with Dr. Abbot lead to something... interesting sparking between the two of you. — 7.9k words!
You've had some pretty shit days in your life. A day before your last college exam ever, your piece-of-shit ex-boyfriend dumped you in favor of going out with someone that he repeatedly told you not to worry about. Before then, you tripped and fell during your high school graduation, and that short clip, taken from the video of your graduation, went semi-viral on YouTube when one of your classmates added dramatic music and Minecraft fall damage sound effects in the background. Your most recent bad day was when your mom called you during a big final interview for your dream job, and you forgot to silence your phone, so you had to call your mother back and explain that no, you didn't get the job because you looked extremely unprofessional in front of the hiring managers.
With all of that bullshit in mind, as you sit in the back of your ex-college roommate's 2009 Honda Civic that probably isn't safe to drive on dirt country roads, let alone a major highway, you decide that today, of all days, is the worst fucking day of your life.
Probably because I snapped my leg in half. Great fucking job, you klutz.
"Hold on," Natalie — or Nat, or your best friend that you met during your college years, or the reason your leg is so unbelievably fucked up in the first place — doesn't dare to look back at you as she make a sharp right turn, narrowly missing a curb as she drives you to the hospital, "We're five minutes out from PTMC. How's your leg?"
"Not good," You wince as you look at the part of your femur that's sticking out of the skin of your leg, blood dripping down your jeans, "Next time you have a stray cat problem, call Animal Control, not me–"
"–I am deathly allergic to cats–"
"–I can see my fucking bone, Nat! This is not the time!" You yell at her, mind clouding with anger from the adrenaline and pain signals that are surging through your body. "And you are not 'deathly allergic'. You sneeze when someone has cat hair on their sweater."
"I didn't ask you to chase it out of my window." Nat grumbles as she puts on her turn signal, quickly changing lanes so she can pass a slow-moving vehicle with an elderly couple who are, for some goddamn reason, going on their Sunday drive at four am on a Tuesday. "You didn't have to fall out of my second-floor apartment–"
"–shit, why didn't I think of that?" You roll your eyes. "Oh, wait, I did! Right after I took a nose dive out of the fucking window–"
"–I'm sorry, okay?" Her brown eyes are sowed with worry for your current state as you dare to meet her gaze in the rear-view mirror. "If I knew this was going to happen, I would've called a professional. Hindsight is twenty-twenty. Sue me."
"…I'm sorry for being a bitch," You take a sharp breath in before you groan in pain — you definitely broke a few ribs too, "Can you blame me? 'Kinda in a lot of pain right now."
There's a brief moment of silence between the two of you before Adele's Rolling in the Deep comes to a close, and then Ginuwine's Pony takes its place, with the song blasting through her Civic's speakers.
This is fucking stupid.
You both burst out laughing at the ridiculousness of the situation you've found yourself in.
"Really? You couldn't play anything else–"
"–I like this song, okay?!" She defends her choice in music as you softly chuckle, only stopping when your sides hurt from the subtle movement. "And you are in no position to talk! You got outsmarted by a cat–"
"–it was a slippery bastard!" Your eyes briefly flutter shut as you recall the Looney Tunes-esque chase that occurred in your best friend's apartment no less than thirty minutes ago. "I'm sorry about your lamp–"
"–you broke my fucking lamp?"
"It's a fair trade because your dog made me fall out of that window," You sigh, "you're lucky your landlord has a thing for you; otherwise, she wouldn't let that Pomeranian of yours within fifty feet of her apartment complex."
"His name is Mr. Fluffles, and he's a very nice dog when you aren't antagonizing him." Nat accuses, causing you to scoff.
"Bullshit! That dog has had a vendetta against me since you got it."
"Mr. Fluffles is a dog," She reminds you, "You have beef with a dog—"
"—the dog had beef with me first!" You fold your arms over your chest, using your playful banter as a way to ignore the excruciating pain that's flowing through your body. "He growls when I walk through the door, and he nips my ankles after I take my shoes off."
"Have you thought, for just a single moment, that he might be saying hello?"
"Hello? Are you serious?" You say in utter disbelief. "Do I bite you as a formal greeting?"
"No! You're not my dog!" Nat shifts the car into park before she finally looks back at your leg. "Oh, that's really bad."
"No shit!" You watch your friend's eyes widen before they begin to dim, her body swaying to an invisible beat. "Hey, Nat, stay with me! You cannot pass out right now! I can't— Fuck!"
Her head smacks the passenger's seat as she goes down for the count, and a string of expletives leave your mouth as you fish your phone out from your back pocket.
When your brother helped you move to Pittsburgh, he insisted that you put all of the local hospitals into your phone — "Just in case!" — and you're now thankful that your overbearing older brother's over-preparedness finally came into use as you select PTMC's contact name from your phone.
You don't have to wait long — a chipper young woman who has not worked enough night shifts to destroy her soul answers your distress call.
"PTMC Front Desk, how can I–"
"–Emergency Department, please." You wheeze as your other hand rests on your not-broken leg.
"Is this an emergency?"
No, I'm prank-calling you. Yes, this is a fucking emergency!
"I broke my leg, and my friend in her car passed out after she saw all of the blood," You hurriedly explain, "I can't get inside of the building without some help. I think I can see the ambulance bay from here–"
"–I'll send out a few paramedics to come get you." This nurse, you presume, matches the panic in your voice as she speaks to you. "What's the color, make, and model of her car?"
"Grey 2009 Honda Civic," You laugh before you groan in pain, "she's a cheapskate."
"We all have friends like that," The woman on the other line offers you a bit of comfort, "what's your name?"
You offer her your name and a bit of basic info about yourself as you peek out of the backseat window, quickly rolling it down and sticking your hand out into the cold nighttime air as you see two paramedics running your way with a wheelchair and a gurney.
"I see them. Thank you." You hang up the phone as one of the paramedics throws the car door open. "Is the wheelchair for me?"
"You wish," He jokes back, "No ambulance ride?"
"Can't afford it," You frown as the paramedic nods sympathetically, "Not sure if I can afford this hospital either, but I don't really have a choice right now, do I?"
"Let's get your leg fixed up," He grimaces as he scans your injury, "then you can ask for an itemized bill."
"I don't think you're supposed to tell me that," You chuckle as you're carefully maneuvered onto the gurney by both paramedics, "my friend's name is Nat. She's not injured. Just… bad with blood."
"Squeamish?" The other paramedic asks as he hauls Nat into a wheelchair.
"Yeah. She was studying to be a nurse when we first met," You hold back cackling laughter as you tell the the story, "One of her professors showed her a picture of a third degree burn, and she passed out on the spot."
"Please tell me that she switched her major–"
"–Not sure if the professor marched Nat in to see her advisor, or if she did it of her own free will, but she wasn't a nursing student for long," You smile as you watch one of the paramedics wheel your friend, then you, inside of the emergency room, "had the heart but not the guts for it, y'know?"
"We need good people in all walks of life, especially right now," The other says before he taps your shoulder, "you're about to become really popular, so don't freak out."
"Damn, I forgot my pen at home." You shake your head as you banter with him. "Hopefully no one asks for my signature."
"What do we have here?" You're approached by a female doctor who quickly gloves up as the paramedic pushes you towards an empty room.
"Late twenties, alert and awake," The paramedic then proceeds to offer her the same information you gave that nurse over the phone, "Friend drove them here, but she passed out before she could help them inside."
"Your friend is the one in the wheelchair?" She asks as she presses two fingers down your side, and you wince in pain once she touches your lower left half.
"She hit her head on one of the seats, if that helps her–"
"–everyone can see your femur. Let's worry about that first." She places her hand on the railings of the gurney. "Surprised you're still awake. The force from the car accident should've–"
"–it wasn't a car accident…" You trail off until you spot her name tag, "Dr. Ellis. I, uh… fell out of a second-story apartment while I was trying to get a stray cat out of my friend's apartment."
She stares at you in disbelief.
"How is this not the strangest thing I've dealt with tonight?" Dr. Ellis mumbles under her breath before she calls out to her fellow doctors and nurses. "Hey, I'm gonna need some help in Trauma One!"
"Can I get something for the pain?" You ask as a shit-ton of nurses flood into the room, their faces a mix of disgust and concern as they look at your leg and prep an IV bag that you hope is full of morphine or something similar. "Take a picture. It'll last a lifetime."
"Oh, you're gonna be one of my favorites tonight." Dr. Ellis smirks to herself. "Did you manage to catch the cat burglar, or did he get away?"
"It landed on four feet," You grumble as two more people enter the room in black scrubs that match Dr. Ellis' current attire, "I did not."
"I see that. While you're awake, I'd like to introduce you to–"
"–Cool, cool," You feel your eyes roll back into your head, "I'm gonna pass out now."
You remember little of the next sixty minutes besides bright lights, pressure around your open wound, and the euphoric feeling of little-to-no pain radiating through your body. It's rather pleasant, besides the eyes you feel crawling all over your body, and you aren't left in your in-between conscious and unconscious state for long as you suddenly meet the gaze of a much older male doctor.
"You with us?" He speaks your name, but you're completely transfixed by how handsome he is.
"Did Nat drive me to the hot doctor hospital?" You ask as your chest slowly rises and falls with no pain to be found anywhere.
"I'm taking that as a yes," He chuckles lightly, "I'm Dr. Abbot. That's Dr. Shen, and you've already met Dr. Ellis. Do you know where you are?"
Dr. Abbot shines a light in your eyes that nearly blinds you.
"They've made it abundantly clear that they're at the hot doctor hospital–"
"–Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center," You answer Dr. Abbot, cutting off Dr. Shen in the process, "I had a compound fracture in my left leg. 'Think I broke my seventh and eighth ribs too."
"Med student?" Dr. Ellis asks, impressed by your knowledge before you shake your head.
"Older brother is — was." You correct yourself on the spot. "Prodigal son who used his younger sibling as his living study guide. He's a pretty good doctor, but his bedside manner fucking sucks."
That elicits a few chuckles out of the nurse who messes with the IV on your arm.
"Does he work around here?"
"Nah, he's a senior resident at the University of Michigan Medical Center." You answer Dr. Shen, who takes a long drink from his Dunkin Donuts' coffee cup, "Hey, quick question for whoever feels like answering me: Am I gonna be able to walk again?"
"You've got a long road ahead of you, but you'll be fine once we get you up to the OR." Dr. Ellis explains before she stares at Dr. Abbot. "So, are you gonna tell them, or do I have to do it?"
"Do I even want to know what you're talking about?" You feel a certain sense of dread — the one that creeps in when you've done something spectacularly embarrassing — settle in your chest as the pair of doctors share amused looks.
"Maybe I want it to be our little secret." Dr. Abbot jokes as Dr. Ellis shakes her head in disapproval.
"Fine." Her eyes then lock with yours. "You tried to kiss Dr. Abbot–"
"–I what–?!"
"–and Dr. Ellis, and Dr. Shen," Dr. Abbot chuckles, seemingly filled with joy as horror and embarrassment cause a heavy flush to appear on your face, "I think you took a swing at the charge nurse, too."
"Oh my God, I am so fucking sorry." You're mortified by your drug-addled behavior before Dr. Shen shakes his head and lifts his cup to you, as a way to cheer on your terrible behavior.
"Don't apologize. You won me five-hundred bucks–"
"–two-fifty," A woman in navy blue scrubs charges past him to take a gander at you, "half of that is mine."
"What?" Your head swings around wildly as she lifts up the railings to your gurney. "What is happening?"
"Dr. Walsh," She offers you a polite nod, "The night shift took bets on which doctor you'd try to kiss after you flirted with every nurse in the trauma room. Dr. Shen and I took the long shot and betted on you making a move on everyone. …Nice job, Casanova."
"Take the bandage off and let me bleed out already." You whine before Dr. Abbot places a gentle hand on your shoulder.
"No can do, compadre," His hand slides down your forearm, fingers barely hovering over your hand, "Dr. Walsh is an excellent surgeon. You're in good hands."
"Thanks," You murmur as you're wheeled out of the room, "and thank you all for taking care of me. I mean this in the nicest way possible, but I hope I never see any of you again."
~
"…So?"
"So," You click your tongue, staring intently at the boot and the cast on your leg, "there's nothing else to say. I went up to the OR, got surgery on my leg, and then I stayed in the recovery room for a few days of monitoring. Got an earful from my brother when he found out, but I was on too many pain meds to really give a shit."
"I'm not asking you about your surgery or your leg," Natalie puts Mr. Fluffles in his cage for the night before she sits next to you with a mug of hot cocoa in her hands, "What about all of the doctors at the hot doctor hospital?"
Your face flushes at those three words.
"Don't tell me–"
"–Dr. Ellis and Dr. Shen had a lot to say about you," She chuckles as you whine in embarrassment, "all good things, I swear! Dr. Abbot seemed pretty charmed by you too–"
"–he was?" You play your hand too soon, reveling in the thought of him asking your best friend about your condition. "What'd he say?"
"You care about what some doctor you saw three weeks ago said about you?" Nat raises an eyebrow at you, and you know you're caught as she has that smirk on her face. "Spill. Immediately."
"Please don't make it a thing."
"You're making it a thing by not telling me," She teases, "I'll get you a glass of hot tea."
"I swear to God, Nat," Your eyes follow her as she walks into the kitchen once, "if you switch out my special herbal tea blend for plain black tea again, I'm gonna–"
"–hit me?" You can hear her cackles from the living room. "Good luck getting over here, Peg Leg."
"Fuck you!" You yell, causing her dog to bark angrily at you. "Yeah, Mr. Fluffles, I said what a said–"
"–again, you are talking to a dog!" Nat interrupts you with a hot mug of comforting goodness. "Now, I need to here more about this doctor of yours."
"Not my doctor," Your face warms as you speak, "and he's not mine, either; however…"
"You're popular with the ED," The nurse comments as he inspects the cast on your leg, "the roses are a nice touch."
"Thank Dr. Ellis for that one," You say before you pluck the Dunkin Donuts gift card from the middle of the bouquet, "and this was from Dr. Shen. Apparently, he felt like spoiling me with his winnings."
"Winnings?"
"Umm…" You're surprised that the story hasn't spread to the day shift since the night shift nurses and doctors treat you like you're a local legend when they come to visit, "They kinda ran a bet to see which doctors I'd try to kiss when they drugged me up for the pain."
"A bet?" He chuckles. "I thought that was day shift's thing."
"…Remind me to never come back to this hospital." You groan as someone knocks on the door to your room.
"Not even to see me?"
"Dr. Abbot!" You're, perhaps, a bit too excited to see a man that you briefly met a day or two ago. "It's only five-thirty, night shift starts at–"
"–I wanted to come down and see you before the insanity started," Those words makes your heart stir in ways that you do not wish to address at the current moment, "I've been on the waiting list for a while."
"You have?" Briefly stunned, you blink rapidly as the nurse in the room side-eyes you. "Sorry. I, uh… didn't expect to have so many visitors. Luckily, the popularity hasn't gone to my head. Everyone says that my humility is my best trait. Can't lose that after one bad accident."
"Good, good," Dr. Abbot smiles — Fuck, he is so unbelievably handsome, and he might actually be the hottest doctor in the hot doctor hospital — before he steps into the room, "You'll have to watch out for this one. They like to get handsy with the nurses and the doctors–"
"–I was heavily medicated!" You scoff, folding your arms over your chest, "I seemed to make a good impression on your staff anyways. Dr. Ellis said that I was her favorite patient of the night."
"Any patient that flirts with her is her favorite–"
"–what about you, huh?" The comment shoots out of your mouth before you can take it back. "Was I one of your favorites?"
"Maybe," He shrugs as he grabs a chair from the corner of the room and brings it to your bedside, "but that honor might have to go to the guy who thought he could walk through walls."
"Did he take too much LSD?" You guess as the nurse does one final check of your vitals.
"Ketamine, actually–"
"–damn, I guess my chances of going on Jeopardy are slim-to-none," You jest before you stiffen once the male nurse closes the door behind him, "Listen, if you're here to tell me to not fall out of more buildings, or to go over follow-up care, Dr. Walsh and the legion of nurses that visited me have already done it."
"I figured, so I brought you a parting gift," Dr. Abbot hands you a folded piece of paper that was hidden in the front pocket of his scrubs, "It's an itemized bill of your–"
"–Yeah, I got that," You stare in disbelief at the tiny number — both literally and monetarily — at the bottom of the page, "I… how did you…?"
"I'm a miracle worker," He jokes before he notices your solemn expression, "I called in a few favors with our billing department."
"Did you… commit insurance fraud?" You're seriously concerned about the danger you've just placed this very kind yet very hot doctor in. "Can't you lose your license over this?"
"It'll be our little secret." He winks at you. "But, while I'm here, I–"
"–Kiara already talked to me," You jump the gun, knowing where this conversation is headed, "I have a roof over my head and I'm able to afford three meals a day. I have savings and a decent-paying job, but it wouldn't be enough if my insurance didn't cover a few nights in a hospital like this. I'm not exactly the… wealthiest in my family. Not by a long shot."
"Your brother–"
"–chewed my ass out after he found out," You sigh as your back hits the pillow on your hospital bed, "and then he offered to pay for any medical bills that I couldn't cover. I'm lucky to have someone like him in my life that could do something like that for me, but I don't want our relationship to be defined by money. I wouldn't be able to pay him back, and I don't want to be that sibling, y'know?"
You don't realize you're crying until Dr. Abbot offers you a tissue box, and your fingers brush against his, sending sparks through your arm and straight into your hopeful heart as you grab one.
"Thanks." You murmur, wiping the water away from your eyes before you softly sniffle. "I didn't mean to get emotional–"
"–it happens all of the time. Especially in a place like this." His hand hovers over yours, like he wants to offer you physical comfort but doesn't want to break an invisible boundary. "Do you have any family close by?"
"No. Older brother's up in Michigan, younger sister's in New York," You explain, "she's finishing up her last year at Juilliard. My parents live in the middle of fuck-all Ohio, as a middle ground between the two."
"But not you."
"Yup." You hate that he picks up on your strained relationship with your parents immediately, but he's a doctor. It's his job to look for clues and dig deeper until he finds what is truly wrong with somebody. "They weren't pleased that I didn't really know what I wanted to do after high school. I bounced around a few jobs after they kicked me out, saved up some money since my award-winning personality didn't get me any scholarships, and, eventually, I found a half-decent college in Pittsburgh that felt more like home than home ever did. That's where I met Nat, the girl I came into the ED with."
"Nat?"
"Natalie," You clarify, "The girl who came in on a wheelchair because she fainted and smacked her head on the car seat?"
"She's the one who drove you here?" Dr. Abbot seems genuinely worried, and you can't say that you blame him since you were distracting your friend with idle chatter during the car ride so she didn't look back and crash the car after she saw your injury.
"Yeah," You click your tongue as you play with the tissue in your hand, "I think it's best that she didn't chase her dreams of becoming a nurse."
He chuckles, and you allow yourself to relax for the first time in days at the sound.
"I'll be staying with her until I get most of my mobility back," You reassure him, "so you won't have to worry about any repeat falls."
"…How did that cat get into her apartment?"
"I wish I knew," You honestly admit, "but she's reassured me that it'll never happen again. So, as lovely as it's been to fraternize with your department, I don't think we'll be seeing each other again."
You both wear a similar disappointed expression before your eyes go to the only clock in the room.
"Shit, I've been keeping you for a while–"
"–I don't have anywhere I'd rather be." Dr. Abbot quietly says. "Gotta keep those patient satisfaction scores up."
"Right, right," You frown at the thought of being nothing more than a positive survey response to him, "you'll get five stars from me, I assure you."
"I–"
"–Hey!" Nat gives you an excited wave before her eyes widen at the sight of Dr. Abbot at your bedside. "Oh my God, is something wrong with them?"
"No, I'm fine. Dr. Abbot was just walking me through some billing information–"
"–I should be going," He leans in close, dropping his voice to a whisper so Nat doesn't hear, "check the back when you have some alone time, and call that number if you need anything."
"You got the Silver Fox Edition of Doctor McDreamy's phone number?"
"Jesus-fucking-Christ, do not call him that." You whine under your breath. "Dr. Abbot was worried that I didn't have a primary care physician that I regularly go to… which is, unfortunately, a correct assumption."
"You have insurance."
"Yeah, I do, and no doctor's office in this fucking city takes it." You argue, swallowing your anger with the American healthcare system so you can have a productive conversation with your friend. "I'm going to try to be better about my health this year, I swear. Even though my remote job with flexible hours provides the shittiest health insurance known to man."
"Sounds like you might be getting a full-body exam for free," Nat wriggles her eyebrows, earning her a small slap on the forearm, "C'mon, that was a good one!"
"Like you're one to speak," You roll your eyes as you picture your roommate flirting with her much older landlord, "You're practically drooling any time Kayla comes over to fix something."
"Have you seen her? She's fucking hot!" She defends herself with a red-hot blush on her face. "I have a thing for my landlord, you have a thing for your doctor. We're even now!"
"I do not have a thing for Dr. Abbot–"
"–didn't he ask you to call him Jack on that little love note he wrote on the back of your bill?" Nat finishes her cocoa as she stands. "If you don't have a thing for him, then you're missing out because he definitely has a thing for you."
"When you ask Kayla out, I'll march my ass back into that ED and see how things unfold from there." You jokingly suggest, and you only begin to panic when you see Nat reach for her phone. "No, no, I was fucking with you–"
"–You're mean when you're hangry." She grabs your empty mug before she strolls into the kitchen once more. "What do you want for dinner?"
"Something that's not burnt."
"Good one, jackass," You can practically hear Nat's eyes roll from the other room, "You want some soup?"
"Whatever you make is fine," You look at your propped-up, cast-covered leg before you sigh, "You know I'm not picky when it comes to a free meal."
"You still sound like a college kid when you talk like that, y'know?" She loudly laughs. "Hell, I still feel like one. Shitty sleep schedule, working all of the time and then some, eating instant ramen over a hot stove when I don't have any— Shit!"
"Nat?" You call out her name after she howls in pain, and you'd run to her side if you didn't have a boulder attached to one of your legs. "Natalie!"
"Oh, shit…. shit, shit, shit, that's a big fucking burn." She cries out. "Can you call someone? I, uh… don't think I'm driving to the hospital for this one, and you're down for the count, so… yeah."
"How bad is it?" You grit your teeth as you reach for your phone. "Just a little water, or something that's gonna require a bit more care and attention?"
"I may or may not have spilled a tea kettle that's full of boiling water all over myself."
"The whole fucking thing?" You check the clock on your phone — 8:34 p.m. — which means that you'll be seeing the night shift again. Goody. "Let me call Kayla first–"
"–I am begging you not to!" She whimpers in pain as you dial her landlord's number, bringing your phone to your ear when she picks up.
"Hello?"
"Hey. Who's this?"
"I'm Nat's friend, the one that's staying with her because they broke their leg?" You quickly explain. "Listen, I'm gonna keep it short. Nat poured some boiling water on herself and I need you to drive her — us — to the hospital."
"Oh my God, is she–"
"–peachy-keen!" Nat limps over, and you do your best not to gag at the sight of her clothing fusing with her skin because of the hot water. "I'll be fine."
"No, I'm taking you to the hospital. Put some cold water on your burns. I'll be down in a few minutes." Kayla instructs once you put your phone on speaker. "Jesus Christ, do you two need a babysitter?"
"Hey, I've been good since I fell out of that window. I avoid cats and open windows." You joke as your fingers brush against the pocket of your jeans. You're not sure why you keep that paper with Dr. Abbot's number with you at all times — a good luck charm, perhaps? — when you have it in your phone, but you're not about to jinx yourself and take it out now. "I have something to tell you about Nat, once this whole mess settles–"
"–nope, not happening!" Nat snatches your phone from your hands as she leans against the couch for support. "We'll see you soon. Love you, bye!"
Her face cringes, a two-fold reaction from the pain and her verbal blunder, before she tosses your phone on the empty seat next to you.
"If I see that doctor of yours…" Nat chuckles as thoughts of sweet revenge course through her mind. "it is on sight."
"Uh-huh." You pat her shoulder, trying to offer her some crumb of comfort. "Let's get you fixed up , then we can deal with the mess that is our love lives. Deal?"
"Deal." She grumbles as Kayla, Nat's tall, physically-fit landlord with perfect hair despite how much she runs around her apartment complex, storms into the living room. "I thought you said a few minutes–"
"I had to cancel my dinner plans," Kayla places an arm around Nat's waist, causing the latter to blush, "Fuck's sake, Nat. That looks bad. Call 911."
"Please, it's not that–" Nat hisses when Kayla lifts off a piece of her shirt, revealing a gnarly burn that appears leathery and charred, "Okay, that's pretty bad."
"On it." You're grabbing your phone so you can chat with a very nice emergency operator, who tells you that Nat will only have to wait a few minutes before an ambulance arrives on scene.
The paramedics are friendly and, thankfully, are not the same ones that plucked you from Nat's car three weeks ago. Unfortunately, neither you nor Kayla are allowed to ride in the back, so you quickly, or as quickly as someone with a boot on their fucking leg can, climb into the passenger's seat of Kayla's Ford Escape before she speeds off towards the hospital.
"Fuck, how did this even happen?" Her fingers drum against the steering wheel as she's forced to stop at a red light while the ambulance carrying Nat speeds off.
"I wish I knew," Your upper teeth chew on your bottom lip, "God, if I could walk, I would've gotten it myself. She was nice enough to offer me something to eat, and then she got hurt because of me."
"Kind yet clumsy," Kayla chuckles as she follows a familiar path that you remember all too well, "that's our Natalie."
"Our Natalie?" You repeat with a wry smile. "Oh, she's gonna love this."
"I…" She trails off, eyes watching the flicker red-and-white lights in the distance with a distinct affection and worry in them, "Don't say anything to Nat until she's better. That's what matters right now."
"My lips are sealed," You mime locking your mouth with a key before you throw said key out of the car window, "but she totally has a thing for you too."
"She does?" Kayla murmurs with hope in her voice.
"Yeah. 'Surprised you didn't know." You laugh to yourself as you watch the sun sink below the horizon, when you're given the briefest glances of the big ball of light in-between tall buildings.
"I…" She can't find the words to say, and in the absence of music or pleasant chatter, you place a comforting hand on Kayla's wrist.
"Nat's gonna be fine. She's in great hands." Your lips curl off to one side as you try to hide a warm flush that threatens to appear on your face. "Those doctors are going to do everything they can to help her. I know it."
Your phone buzzes as PTMC comes into view, and you roll your eyes when you see your brother's contact image pop up on your home screen.
"Hey, what's–"
"–did you fall again?!?" There's a heavy amount of concern in your sibling's voice. "Why are you at the hospital?"
Did… did he put a fucking tracker on me?
"How do you know where I am?" You pause, choosing to pivot before he starts spiraling and giving you more unsolicited medical advice. "Nevermind. I'm fine. Nat, the girl that I was staying with, got some pretty bad burns on her arms and legs."
"Did you–"
"–remove the clothing that wasn't stuck to the burns, elevate the burns above the heart, and then cover them loosely with a fresh, clean, and sterile cloth?" You recite knowledge that you know by heart — he really should send you part of his fancy doctor paycheck since you were his human study guide throughout med school — before you sigh, "Check, check, and check. I got it, Dr. Worrywart. Get back to saving lives."
"You make me worry. You fell out of a window–"
"–and my sleeve caught onto something after I took the plunge, so I only fell, like, six feet?" You scratch your head. "Yes, I know any fall is enough to kill you. I didn't die, and I am very cautious when I'm around cats or I'm slightly above the ground. Find some poor Michigander to bother instead of me."
"You don't have anyone to look out for you. Nat's nice, but… you're not close to your family, and you don't have a partner you can lean on," Those words from your brother sink a dagger into an old wound that's been festering for a long, long time, "you could move closer to me, or you could go to New York, or–"
"–don't you fucking say it." You snap at him, even though your anger isn't directed towards him. "We both know that they don't want to see me. They've made that abundantly clear."
"I don't see why you're still mad at our–"
"–drop it. Please." You beg of your brother before Kayla taps your shoulder with her fingers, letting you know that she's parked the car and is ready to go inside. "Listen, I gotta go. Chat later?"
You hang up on him before Kayla opens the driver's side door.
"I'll see if I can get you some crutches or a wheelchair or something." She moves quite frantically as you open the door on your side, carefully swinging your legs to the outside before you throw your head back and let a heavy breath escape you.
"Fuck me," You wipe your face with your hand, "and fuck this cast. I cannot wait to get this thing off of my leg."
You allow yourself a bit of rest, a few moments to catch your breath before you're plunged into the insanity that'll be present in the ED — alongside a company of doctors and nurses who will be very happy to see you return — before Kayla returns with a pair of crutches.
"They didn't have any wheelchairs in the main entrance. Sorry." She apologizes as she helps you stand, lifting your casted foot off of the ground until you're stable on the crutches.
"I actually prefer the crutches. They make me feel less helpless, y'know?" You use the crutches to take a few steps forward so Kayla can close the door to her car. "You ready for this?"
"Is anyone ready to go into an emergency room?" Kayla cracks a small joke that makes you laugh.
"Touche, touche," You grab the collar of her shirt to lead her in the right direction, "we can go through the ambulance bay since you're her emergency contact."
"I am?"
"Yup," You chuckle as you maneuver your crutches through the concrete parking lot, "I had the doctors change it after I had surgery on my leg. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be of much help in an emergency for a while, and I figured that the two of you were going to get together soon, so I jumped the gun and wrote your information down for them to use."
"Thanks, Peg Leg." Kayla snorts, sidestepping you when you swing a crutch in her direction.
"I'm going to regret getting you two together, aren't I?" You shrug as you hobble into the emergency department. "I charge money for my matchmaking efforts, Kayla. Expect a bill in three-to-five business days."
"I'll throw in a tip for your troubles." She murmurs as a warm, pleasant voice carries over the chatter of nurses and patients in the ER.
"If it isn't my favorite patient!" Lena, the charge nurse, glances up at you with a kind smile on her face. "What brings you in this time, Casanova?"
"You get that from Ellis or Walsh?" You scoff when she answers with a non-committal shrug. "We're here to see a friend of ours. You remember the girl I came in with?"
"Ah, the fainter?" Lena frowns when she notices the mutual concern shared by you and Kayla. "What's going on with her?"
"She came by ambulance a few minutes before us." Kayla nervously explains, pulling on the ends of her grey highlights. "Burns on her arms and legs. Third-degree, I think?"
"Trauma Two," Lena sticks an arm out when Kayla tries to rush back towards the room, "Why don't I get the two of you something to eat while you wait?"
"I can't see her?" Kayla softly whispers, a little heartbroken. "Did something happen? She was awake before, she talked to me–"
"–Dr. Shen and Dr. Abbot," Lena gives you a look that you can't quite decipher at the second doctor's name, "are doing everything they can to help her."
"Hey, Casanova," Dr. Ellis bumps elbows with you after she rolls a wheelchair in your direction, "You looking for an upgrade?"
"Depends," You smile after you wink at her, "will you the one be chauffeuring me around?"
"Arrangements can be made." She teases as you lean your crutches against the main desk before you sit in the wheelchair. "How's the leg?"
"A pain in my ass, literally and metaphorically," You groan as Dr. Ellis chuckles, "Pain's not too bad. If it bothers me, I take some Acetaminophen."
Lena leans over the desk to look at you as Kayla nervously bounces from one foot to the other in rapid succession.
"Am I still the prettiest charge nurse you've seen?"
"You know it." You shoot back as she laughs. "You free for dinner?"
"Sorry, I've got plans. Tomorrow night, then?"
"I'll pick you up at eight in my hot rod!" You pretend to rev up the engine to your pretend car as Ellis wheels you around the corner, eliciting a round of laughter from the nurses pinned to the phones and computers at the front desk.
"You are a charmer." Lena brushes you off as you roll past her with Kayla hot on your heels.
"What about you, Dr. Ellis?" You readjust your foot so your leg is more comfortable. "You like Italian?"
"If it's free and it's fancy, I'm game," Ellis moves you past Trauma One, then Trauma Two, and you swear you meet Dr. Abbot's eye for the briefest of moments before he moves back behind the drawn curtain that's hiding your friend from you, "but am I really the one you want to be asking that to?"
"Huh?" You turn your head back to look at her. "What do you mean?"
"Dr. Abbot gave you his phone number," There's a beat of silence before Ellis speaks again, "he doesn't do that for all of his patients."
"He doesn't?" Now you're more confused — most of the night-shift nurses that visited you, including Lena, told you of Dr. Abbot's extended kindness to his patience. Surely that was just a nicety and nothing more, right?
…Right?
"Shit." You utter a single word as the realization crashes upon you. "I'm an idiot."
"I told Abbot that he should've waited," Ellis pats your shoulder in reassurance, "but he insisted. You made a good impression on him, Casanova."
"What about you?"
"Talk to Abbot first," Ellis parks you in one of the patient rooms, rather than the waiting room in the hospital, "then you can come and find me."
"I'm holding you to that, Dr. Ellis!" You call out as you and Kayla are left in a quiet, private room.
"What do we do now?" She asks as the door shuts fully, closing the two of you off to the outside world.
"We wait," You calmly say, "and hope for the best."
You occupy your time with some sort of mobile game on your phone while your friend's landlord paces back and forth like it's her job. You're worried to death, just like her, but you cannot pace, so your must settle your spiraling mind through other means.
Subway Surfers isn't the most soothing game in the world, but it works to pull the invisible hands of time forward until you hear someone knock at the door.
"Is she alright?" Kayla storms the doctor that enters the room, and you're temporarily relieved and disappointed to see Dr. Shen instead of Dr. Abbot. "Nat, she's my–"
"–girlfriend," You interrupt, "for all intents and purposes."
"Natalie's stable. You can see her before she goes upstairs for a skin graft." Dr. Shen shoots you a thumbs-up before he leads Kayla out of the room, and you don't understand the meaning of the gesture until you see Dr. Abbot standing in the doorway.
"Dr. Abbot," You decide to be a grown-up and lead the conversation, even as your heart rate spikes when he closes the door behind him, "How is she?"
"In worse shape than you were," His eyes drift down to the boot on your leg, "but she'll pull through. Lots of bad ass scars to tell her future kids about."
"I'm glad." You awkwardly drum your fingers against the side of the wheelchair, unsure of what to say next. "Dr. Abbot–"
"–Jack."
The correction leaves you temporarily stunned and flustered, but you manage to recover before you speak next.
"Jack," The name slides smooth off of your tongue, like it was always supposed to be there, "I didn't get the chance to thank you for what you did. You put your neck out there for me. Not a lot of people would do that."
For me. Not a lot of people would do that for me.
"First, do no harm," Jack sits on the edge of the patient's bed as he continues to stare at your poor leg, "May I?"
"Is this gonna cost me anything?" You fold your arms over your chest, a confident smile on your face. "I'm afraid I can't pay you in anything but corny jokes and bad flirting."
"Who said it was bad?" He murmurs as your cheeks heat up, his hand elevating your leg until it can rest over his knees. "Your follow-up appointment–"
"–went smoothly. They said I might have this thing off in another week or two, in the best case scenario," You watch with rapt attention as Jack's fingers slowly undo the velcro on your boot, "otherwise, I've got another month or two of channel-surfing as my most adventurous hobby."
"I saw it in your charts."
"You checked my charts?!" You feel like your privacy was slightly invaded, but you do feel a shiver of excitement slide down your back at the thought of him snooping for more details on you.
"You didn't call." Jack hums. "Cast looks good. It's not too tight?"
"Fits like a glove… well, more like a sock," You chuckle at your bad joke, "And I'm sorry for not calling. I… I didn't know you wanted me to call. I kept — keep — your number with me, in case of emergencies."
Perhaps it was a small comfort to have Jack Abbot only a phone call away, if something itched or hurt unexpected or if you wanted to indulge in a feeling that you thought was nothing but a fantasy.
A fantasy that, based on his tender words and gentle care, may actually become a reality.
You present him with that small, meaningless but meaningful to you piece of paper, and he briefly rubs it between two of his fingers before he sets it aside.
"You thought about calling me."
Not a question, or a flirtatious remark. A statement. One that rings true for your heart and your mind.
"I did," A pause, "a lot."
Jack's eyes meet yours.
"Why not?"
Fear of the unknown. Uncertainty of the future. The fact that he's ten years younger than your dad.
"I didn't think you'd pick up."
"I would've." He answers, perhaps far too quickly. "Day or night."
You don't know what to say in this push-and-pull dynamic where you're both dancing around what you truly want to say.
So you say it.
"I thought about you a lot."
There's silence. You think that you've mucked it all up until Jack softly chuckles.
"I think about you a lot."
Think. In the present-tense, as in currently thinking about you.
Oh. Oh God.
"I…" The words are caught in your throat, "Umm…"
"Star-struck?" He jokes. "It happens all of the time."
"Usually, I'm the one leaving people speechless," You swallow a bit of spit that's risen in your throat as you try to take back some control of the situation, "So… does this mean I can call you for non-medical emergencies?"
"Non-medical emergencies?" Jack echoes.
"Yeah," You wear a cheshire-cat grin as you speak, "when I need someone to accompany me to a new coffee shop that opened up a block away from my best friend's apartment."
"What if," A light puff of air escapes him before a small, handsome smile appears on his face, "I answered and agreed to go on… Saturday morning?"
"Then, Dr. Abbot," You lean forward with a mischievous glint in your eyes, "I'd say that we'd be going on a date."

Summary:
The worst day of your life is when you, at four o'clock in the goddamn morning, try to play hero and, instead, end up taking a nose-dive out of a second-floor apartment, snapping your leg in two. Your grand prize is a flashy ride to Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, where you're shipped off to the ER. You meet the night crew, and, most notably, Dr. Abbot, who may actually be flirting with you.
...It's probably the morphine fucking with your memory. Don't fool yourself.
You're quickly shipped off in a cast, never to see Silver-Fox McDreamy again until your dumbass college roommate that you're staying with until your leg heals manages to give herself third-degrees burns. Back to the ER you go, where someone seems all too happy to see you again. Dr. Abbot insists on checking your leg out, even though you're fine, and you both overplay your hand, sharing things that are far too intimate for this setting.
So maybe you meet up for coffee once. Or twice. Or you go back to his place, or yours, and suddenly you're in relationship-limbo with the hot doctor you met 10 months ago.
Okay, cool, no problem. You're not from Pittsburgh. You're not looking for anything serious. Neither is he. It's perfect as is.
Then, one day at ten in the morning, your roommate's dog, who's a day late and a dollar short on his vaccines, takes a chunk out of your leg, causing you to take a header into their coffee table.
(Three ER trips in one year, batting 0-3, you and your roommate are on a roll!)
This is the second worst day of your life, as your roommate comes along this time and cannot help but try to set you up with the doctor that looks like that one dreamy guy from that show, c'mon, you know the one!
You're begging her to call him Dr. Langdon.
After stumbling through that encounter, in which you and the doctor are both equally embarrassed, you decide to be much more careful around dogs, buildings, hot pans of water-
-and then your roommate falls down a flight of stairs after they got their wisdom teeth removed.
You're, unfortunately, given a chance to apologize to Dr. Langdon over your friend's behavior, and you end up inviting him out for a cute little museum date after you two get to talking for a while.
...But it's never just one date with you, is it?
You think you're managing this — whatever you call this — very well. Dr. Night and Dr. Day, as your roommate loving calls them, live two separate lives, as do you.
Nothing serious. All casual. No one needs to get their feelings hurt.
Until you walk into a hotel room — paid for by Abbot, of course — and you find him and Langdon waiting there for you.
...Well, shit.

Chapter 3: Dr. Night & Dr. Day (Abbot & Langdon) — 15.4k words.
It's been a year since you met Abbot, and two months since you met Langdon. You know you should be honest with both of them about who you're seeing, but for some reason, you can't be; however, someone forces your hand, and the reckoning of your decisions slaps you in the face... but not in the way you expect.

summary: you're not a morning person, but you think you can brave an early morning wake-up to see your favorite person in the world. — 1.3k words! [read on ao3!]
You're not usually an early riser; if anything, you'll happily let the early birds of the world catch the worms as you get a few extra hours of sleep.
For some reason still unknown to you, you were — quite rudely, might you add — pulled from your slumber and unable to return to the blissful state of unconsciousness that you craved.
Fine. You can be an early bird for one day, you suppose.
The coffee maker in your kitchen beckons you forth, after you stubbed your big toe on the corner of the bed frame, and you sleepily rub your eyes as you try to read the time displayed on the stove.
Eight-fifteen in the morning.
Normally, you'd shrug and go back to bed after seeing that time on a clock, but you can't find the motivation to do so. Not just because you can't sleep — you probably could, if you tried hard enough.
No. You're going to remain awake — by any means necessary — because at eight twenty-eight, and not a minute sooner, Jack Abbot will waltz through that door.
Perhaps it was divine intervention that you woke up at such an ungodly hour — well, it's not that early, but you'd rather start your day at an hour that has a one in front of it — so you could prep for Jack's entrance, no matter how good or bad his shift was.
Two mugs are perfectly aligned on the counter — the matching sun and moon mugs you made on that cute pottery date that you dragged Jack to on one of his days off — and your fingers trace the rough edges on the handle of his mug as you try to decide what blend of coffee to use. A stifled yawn, paired with sleepy eyes, make that job more difficult than it should be, so you navigate back to your bedroom, minding the bed frame this time, to grab your phone from the nightstand.
Little will wake you from your sleepy state, but a few loud rock songs should do the trick. You've learned from previous mistakes, so your phone is in dark mode before you turn it on, and you quickly navigate to a user-made playlist of eighties dad-rock songs on Spotify before you press play. After cranking the volume, you jump out of your skin when Sweet Child O' Mine blasts from your phone's speakers.
If I wasn't awake before, I'm certainly awake now.
You set your phone to the side, once you return to the kitchen, and you choose a simple, classic breakfast blend of coffee as your caffeine boost of the day. With a few agile maneuvers and a small pile of ground coffee beans on the counter as a minor casualty to your sleep-induced morning carelessness, you let the machine in front of you brew your coffee before you check the time.
Eight twenty-three. I've still got five minutes to go.
You could change into some casual clothes, or whip up a quick breakfast, or do something remotely productive with your time, but you have a strong feeling that Jack will talk you back into the comfort of bed after you finish up your cup of coffee. You should resist and make the most of your day off of work, but you're far too tempted by a warm bed, soft sheets, and an even warmer lover.
Resistance is fruitless, especially when I want to be right next to him, and he wants the same damn thing. Perhaps I could talk him into something light for breakfast before we both fall asleep…
Your timing is impeccable — the last drop of coffee falls into the coffee pot when the front door swings open — and you're quick to pour Jack a cup before you place the pot back onto the coffee maker.
The crescent-shaped moon on the dark blue mug shines when the soft streaks of sunlight that break through your living room curtains hit the shape at just the right angle. This mug holds fond memories — memories of you having to help Jack construct the mug since he struggled to get the shape just right, and him thanking you by wiping a little clay onto your cheek — so you hope that this will lift his spirits after a rough night, or be the sweet ending to the occasional slow shift that he was treated to.
Jack's eyes crinkle, a smile forming on his face once you appear in front of him, but you don't give him a chance to open his mouth before you pull him in for a quick kiss. Your free hand works the backpack off his shoulder before it's carelessly tossed to the side, in favor of your fingers playing with the collar of his scrubs.
"You're rolling out the red carpet for me," Jack says before he chases your lips for another kiss, one that's much longer than its predecessor, "Everything okay?"
"Couldn't go back to sleep," You honestly admit as his fingers trace the outline of your hand before he grabs the mug from you, "and I knew you were coming home soon. Long night?"
"Wasn't too bad," He murmurs, pressing his lips to your forehead, "You sure you're–"
"–Jack, turn off doctor mode. I'm good," You ruffle your messy hair into a more unruly state, causing Jack to softly chuckle, "I know I'm a rare sight at eight in the morning, but I don't mind getting up early. Especially if it means that I get to see you."
Amusement dances in his eyes as he lovingly looks at you.
"I must be special, then."
"Oh, you're something, alright." You tease, grabbing his hand before you tug him towards the kitchen. There's no protesting from him because he's right where he wants to be. "C'mon, I'll make you something to eat."
"I can–"
"–Nope," You refuse Jack's offer to take care of you, even though he'll end up helping you with breakfast in some way. Would it kill him to relax, unwind, and let someone else take care of him for once? "I got this. You worked all night."
Surprisingly, he relents with only a small grumble of disagreement, but you know better than to put your guard fully down. You're constantly looking over your shoulder to make sure that Jack is standing far from the oven or refrigerator. You do allow him to pour you a cup of coffee, in your mug of literal sunshine, and your heart skips a beat when you see him smile when he recognizes the mugs that you used.
With the stove top on, and a few eggs prepped and ready to go, you're prepared to make a quick, simple breakfast… until Jack places two hands on your hips before he nips at your neck.
"What are you doing–"
"–dance with me."
"What?" You're utterly confused on why he'd want to dance with you to the likes of Def Leppard and AC/DC until you realize that your phone is playing a power ballad by none other than Whitesnake.
Ah, I see what this is.
"Trying to relive your glory days?" You tease.
"Am I that obvious?" Jack asks. "One song. That's it."
"Then I'm off the hook?" One look in his eyes tells you that you're not, no matter his response. "Fine. Just one dance."
You turn off the heat to the stove before Jack pulls you away from the kitchen counter. With one hand on the small of your back, and the other tracing small circles into your hip bone with his fingers, he sways you side-to-side as you place your arms around his neck.
"You are a dork." You accuse as he wears a small smirk on his lips.
"At least I'm not the one dating a dork." He shoots back, causing you to snort with laughter.
"It's worse than that," You jokingly lament, "I'm in love with him, too."
"No–"
"–Uh-huh," You play right off his response, "but he's in love with me as well, so I guess I didn't end up too bad."
Jack steal a kiss from you before you both dissolve into laughter, and neither of you notice when the song changes once, then twice, then thrice.
Because, for now, the outside world fails to exist, and you're safe (and very in-love with) Dr. Jack Abbot. Isn't that all you could ask for?
kat a/n: fitting that the first fic that I post on a blog that I share with my best friend is about box munching LMAOOOO nobody yaps about box munching like us 😌
relationship: wife! dana evans x gender-neutral! spouse! reader
cws: THIS IS SMUT — you have been warned. reader's genitalia is unmentioned (box munching is a gender-neutral sport), oral sex (f! receiving), reader is a munch!
summary: dana comes home from a rough shift, and you come up with a way to help her relax. — 1.0k words! [read on ao3!]
A massage wouldn't suffice. You know this, yet your fingers keep kneading the muscles in Dana's shoulders as your mind tries to drum up a better way for you to relieve some of your wife's stress.
She usually comes home with a piece of the world resting upon her on shoulders, from the hundreds of lives she does save and the few that she doesn't, but tonight was different. The burdens she carried into your home were too plentiful and ripe, shackling her to the floor of your foyer until you dragged her further into your home. You didn't mind the cigarette smoke that wafted in your direction — if anything, you may enjoy it a bit too much, especially when she blows the noxious fumes right into your mouth after she takes a hit from her cigarette — but you did mind the way Dana just let you take care of her.
Dana, the woman who argued with you day-in and day-out about splitting dinner duties because it wasn't fair, in her mind, that you did most of the domestic work around the house while she was busying saving lives, didn't even say a word to you about eating dinner or chores or anything as you quickly ushered her into your shared bedroom.
It was a silent, contemplative night where she took small puffs from her cigarette as you pulled the claw clip from her silver-blonde hair, running your fingers through each and every strand as you tried to offer her a bit of physical comfort. Although she didn't talk, since her mind was racing with thoughts that you weren't privy to, you could tell that your touches were having some effect on Dana as she occasionally hummed in contentment.
Once you were done playing with her hair, your hands moved down her neck, fingernails tracing small lines down the back of her neck before you began to rub small, comforting circles into her shoulders. Currently, this course of action has resulted in a more relaxed version of your wife, if her hand on your thigh is anything to go by.
Her thumb strokes a patch of exposed skin, where your pajama shorts ride up a little bit too far, and you watch as she opens and closes her mouth a few times, trying to think of something to say to you.
You don't need to hear a 'thank you' from Dana. She'd do the same for you, for every single fucking person she's ever met because that's who she is. Despite the hardened exterior, she cares for everyone, and you'd happily be the one to care for her at the end of the day.
Although Dana's more relaxed than when she first entered your home, you can tell that she's still thinking about something. Her mind's still at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, even though her body is at home with you. You're unsure of what to say or do next until you watch Dana slowly spread her legs, her thighs inviting you to dive in-between them.
"Dana," You murmur against the shell of her ear, wrapping your arms around her midsection as you squeeze her tightly, "if I go too far, tell me to stop."
Your lips press small, quick kisses to her neck as you work to remove her jacket. It's leather, sliding easily out of your hands and onto the floor, where she'll later scold you for leaving it there when you're both curled up together in the dead of the night. As you continue your tender assault, she tilts her head away from you, allowing you further access as you nip at the base of her neck.
"No biting," Dana warns with a graceful yet tired smile on her face, "I deal with enough of that shit at work."
"Yes, ma'am." You nod in agreement before your hands trail down the front of her scrubs. "You alright?"
"I'll live," She sighs, "I always do."
"Dana," You, gently yet sternly, say her name so she's forced to look you in the eyes. "Relax. You're at home."
You press a sweet kiss to her lips before you stand, completing a small half circle with patient, calm steps before you kneel in front of her spread legs. Using her hair clip (that you conveniently pocketed for no reason at all), you put your hair up as your hands land on Dana's hips. Without a word exchanged between the two of you, you pull her bottoms and underwear down her legs in one go.
This is for Dana, a hundred-and-ten-percent, but you'd be lying if you said that you weren't excited to devour your wife.
You don't tease her like usual, running your tongue up and down her thighs after you leave marks that won't go away for days; instead, you let your mouth do the talking as you drink up every bit of Dana that you can get.
There's no adequate word in the English language to explain how good she tastes to you, especially when the flavor that coats your tongue is accompanied by her small sighs of relief.
Relief. That's all you want to be for her. A soft place to land, an oasis from the dry desert that she marches into every single day. You will be her safety net, the one that will always catch her when times get rough.
A sweet reward, like the fluids that grace your tongue as you lap at her folds, won't always be awaiting you when you comfort Dana, but you don't need that. Her comfort is enough. She's enough.
You only stop the small flicks of your tongue, the gentle strokes that aim to tip her over the edge rather then send her flying over it, when Dana's hand goes under your chin, forcing you to look her in the eyes. Her eyes crinkle in reserved amusement as her thumb wipes some of her slick from your bottom lip, preventing you from drooling all over the bedroom carpet.
"Thank you," She whispers, "I had a rough day."
"I know," You place your hands upon her thighs to relieve part of the temptation of wearing her legs as earmuffs, "and that's what I'm here for. I'm here for you, Dana. For whatever you need."
