Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms in Haiti! ❤️❤️❤️ Elsiana (43) just had her second baby (after a 20 year age gap!) after receiving prenatal care with the traveling midwives. She brought her sweet baby girl back to the Mobile Clinic for postnatal care. Mom and baby are doing well and Elsiana was happy to talk with us about how hard the birth was! Marie Denise Sylvestre began attending births as a matwon, traditional birth attendant, at age 9. She moved to Hinche to attend high school and then became a nurse. A teacher told her about our education program and she says: “There were 65 candidates and they only took 11. I was one of them!” She graduated in Class 3 in 2011. “Now I am much more trained in complications. I’m a skilled birth attendant wherever I go, not just at the hospital. I always keep a pair of gloves in my purse. I’ve even delivered babies at the market!” - Marie Denise is one of 156 skilled birth attendants we’ve trained over the years, or about 20% of the skilled maternity providers working in the country. According to UNFPA, Haiti only has enough skilled providers to meet the reproductive health needs of 10% of the population. We’re working to change that by #taskshifting midwifery skills to Haitian nurses. - Our graduates have a low attrition rate (meaning they stay in Haiti to work rather than emigrating) and high employment rate of about 92%. MFH grads work throughout the country, many in rural areas where their skills are desperately needed, and are hired by government hospitals, clinics, and NGOs. Prenatal care saves lives. Mobile clinic midwife, Marie Ange, examines a pregnant mother in the space she has available at this rural clinic in Los Monmones. Opposite this corner, another midwife is also doing maternal assessments. 50 women received prenatal or postnatal care here yesterday. The traveling midwives can see up to 150 women on a single day and are reaching 24 villages monthly. Most women walk long distances at all stages of pregnancy to reach these clinics, and 1/3 of the women walk over 3 hours *each way* because it’s usually their only chance to receive the care that ensures a safe pregnancy. - Haiti has the highest maternal mortality rates in the W. Hemisphere and nearly all of these deaths are preventable. By bringing maternity care to some of the most vulnerable women, the Mobile Prenatal Clinic is closing a critical gap in care and saving lives. - On May 5th, International Day of the Midwife, we’ll be kicking off our annual appeal to keep the midwives on the road. Ronel Emmanuel (40) has been our driver since the day we began this work 11 years ago. When Ronel’s wife was pregnant years ago, he had to take her to Pignon (an hour away) because “the way things were in Hinche then, if 12 women arrived at the hospital, all 12 would die.” Over the years, we’ve trained our students at the hospital, pay 18 skilled birth attendant salaries to ensure quality care is available 24/7, and also supply medications and supplies. “How has Hinche changed? Women get the best care here now,” says Ronel. And sometimes babies are born in the back of the Land Cruiser after a Mobile Prenatal Clinic. “We were coming back from Los Palis and transporting a (high risk) woman to the hospital. When the midwives said she was pushing, I pulled over. The baby was born and then I kept going. I wasn’t scared. It is our greatest honor to introduce our 10th class of skilled birth attendants. 💕 - These 30 students were the best and brightest of 210 applicants and we are thrilled to welcome them to the Nadene Brunk Eads School! Over the next 14 months, they will complete 500 hours of classroom time and 750 hours of supervised clinical experience by 7 Haitian preceptors and our staff.
