We’re working to change that... and we need your help. --- Access to skilled attendance before, during, and after childbirth is the single most critical intervention to ensure safe motherhood and infant survival. Prenatal care saves lives. Mobile clinic midwife, Marie Ange, examines a pregnant mother in the space she has available at this rural clinic in Los Monmones. Opposite this corner, another midwife is also doing maternal assessments. 50 women received prenatal or postnatal care here yesterday. The traveling midwives can see up to 150 women on a single day and are reaching 24 villages monthly. Most women walk long distances at all stages of pregnancy to reach these clinics, and 1/3 of the women walk over 3 hours *each way* because it’s usually their only chance to receive the care that ensures a safe pregnancy. - Haiti has the highest maternal mortality rates in the W. Hemisphere and nearly all of these deaths are preventable. By bringing maternity care to some of the most vulnerable women, the Mobile Prenatal Clinic is closing a critical gap in care and saving lives. - On May 5th, International Day of the Midwife, we’ll be kicking off our annual appeal to keep the midwives on the road. Ysemonique has delivered about 800 babies in the past 8 yeas in Haiti. "Of all the parts of my work, I like deliveries the best. I like it when I am able to guide a woman through her labor and catch the baby in my hands. I often run into women on the street who remember me as their midwife and say their baby is healthy.
