I once called a colleague's Borzoi a beautiful Gentle Alien, assuming the term had long since become commonplace outside of Tumblr, and discovered when he burst into delighted laughter at the term that it Had Not. I had to explain to him that I'm not a comedy genius, just repeating a niche meme.

Tumblr user @sexy-people-contests-2026 posts the first round of their tumblr sexy jester/clown poll bracket. Entries were collected via community form, in which a user submitted vtuber Gavis Bettel.

April 3

Cover Corporation (parent company of Hololive Production) announces that they are downsizing their male vtuber branch, Holostars. Company support is almost entirely pulled from their 12 Japanese talents. Fans of their 10 English talents worry that they could be next on the chopping block. A larger discussion on how these talents are marketed by the company also begins.

April 7

Bettel wins his first round against Laughing Jack and moves onto the next round. In this next match up he is put against Shadow Milk Cookie from Cookie Run Kingdom.

April 8

Gavis Bettel hits 200k subscribers on YouTube.

April 9

Twitter users are made aware of the poll. Users start coming back to their old tumblr accounts or create new ones to start voting for Bettel.

April 10

Bettel becomes aware of the poll.

He also becomes a popular pick for people who are mad at the writing decisions made in Cookie Run Kingdom.

People also start making joke ship art between Bettel and Shadow Milk (bettelmilk)

April 15

Bettel wins the second round and moves on to round three.

In this round he is put against Pomni from The Amazing Digital Circus.

He talks about the poll bracket on his Week in Review stream and admits he has never used tumblr. Viewers inform him of classic tumblr memes and stories. He also asks the social media team from Bandai Namco America (they often appear in his chat) to get on their defunct tumblr to vote for him (they can't access the account).

April 18

Bettel has an unarchieved karaoke stream to celebrate 200k subscribers, the runner of the of the polls tunes in.

April 19

The official Holostars EN twitter and Instagram accounts make ominous posts about the poll since they are unable to directly link to it due to company policy.

April 20-21

Bettel makes one last rallying cry to see if he can get people to vote for him. He receives endorsements from other vtubers including Elira Pendora, Shu Yamino, and Yu Q. Wilson.

The illustrator for his vtuber model, Senzaki Makoto, also becomes aware of the poll and says she will draw him if he wins the bracket.

April 22

With a rally of support from across the vtuber fan sphere, Bettel is able to beat Pomni.

Fans jokingly say that this poll bracket has done more for advertising Bettel than his company has and also joke that it could save Holostars from further budget cuts. In the semi-final round he is against April from Monster Prom. The poll will end April 29.

So there's a thing going around bluesky about people who ignore the Prologue and Epilogue of novels because 'if they were important they'd be in the story'.

And I want to knee-jerk into anger and go off that these are a specific sort who can't read anything above a certain reading level or were left behind by their educational systems.

This would be rude.

When really they may see the words Prologue and Epilogue and assume it's like an author forward or extra information because they are illiterate no, rude. Because it's something that's gone by the wayside in popular fiction. You don't see too many huge mainstream books with Prologues, let alone Epilogues anymore let alone ones truly part of the story.

So it's our fault, as authors.

We need to write more books that are incomprehensible if you skip the Prologue.

No more history lessons, frens. No more setting up the world with past events so old they don't directly impact the story in the Prologues.

If it's not directly related to the story it doesn't need to exist. Use them for important things that happened just before the story the rest of the book will focus on, have the events of the Prologue come into play later so if you skipped it you'll be completely lost.

Hide the real ending in the Epilogue.

Be a bastard and force these people to read the whole fucking book.

I actually have a different take on this trend.

I think it's the fault of textbooks. How many textbooks does the average student get shown that have a prologue with dedication, thanks, or a heartfelt essay that doesn't convey any of the information a student is often looking for?

I suspect that's where most people see prologues first, and they're even directed to skip by their teachers.

Idk I remember those being called forewords in my textbooks. We skipped forewords all the time because they were nothing to do with the subject, they were authors explaining their careers, or praise of the author from peers, that taught nothing on the subject. Sometimes I was told to skip introductions in essays, too, if I was short on time and looking for something specific. Author's notes and Forewords and Afterwords are extra information but Prologues and Epilogues were in-universe and part of the story. I'm amazed people don't read them - prologues have had some of my favorite character developments.

No no I agree with you completely, I just think that a bunch of people got so used to skipping forwards that it bled over into prologues. It's silly, but I honestly think that's what happened.

I don't think I have ever for any class ever, read a text book cover to cover. We always got assigned page numbers or specific sections and skipped around. If they had forewords, I never would have noticed or cared.
