It's sad for me to say..

that I obviously understand that my grandpa has no idea who I am. I’ve understood the fact that he is dying and there is no possible way for his problem to be cured.

Living with someone who has dementia is honestly a nightmare. The stress that me and the few in my family has is unreal. Especially since I’ve pretty much lived with my grandparents since I was 16 (besides living on my own for a few and moving out of state for a few). It is just hard to watch someone basically deteriorate in front of you, just knowing you can’t do anything about it. I’ve learned to semi-accept this, and not be so hard on myself about it.

For anyone who cares, sleep is what you (as someone who’s healthy living with someone who has alzheimers/dementia) adapt to not having. I work full time, and go to class full time. Waking up at 4:30 everyday and not getting home until around 10. Obviously I have to eat and shower after, which by then, it will be 11 at night. There is this section in the disease that is called, “night downers,” or something along those lines. That is defined as someone who has dementia/alzheimers that loses track of the day/night. They pretty much stay up all night and sleep all day. The hard part about that is when the person who has it, doesn’t go to sleep until midnight, one, two…and so on.

What I have to go through every single day, is by far the hardest part of life (other than trying to figure out what the hell I want to eat sometimes) I’ve ever had to go through. I love my grandparents to death, and nothing could ever change that. I’m always going to be there for them whenever I get the chance. The day my grandpa passes will honestly tear me apart, but also be a relief for me, my grandma, my mother, and some of my great aunts. I just hope the day he does leave, that he will know deep down, after how much stress we all have had, that we will always cherish the moments we have had with him, everything that he has helped out with, (not only with me, but my mom and brother too) and just everything. Also, my grandpa and my dad both taught me how to make drinks when I was about four. Even if I ever start bartending in the future, (which I don’t even know why I haven’t yet) I will always make drinks exactly how him and my dad made me make them.

Fuck alzheimers/dementia. I hope that one day there’s a cure to fully stop it.
