something shameless gets right (and fandom largely doesn't*) is that similarities between characters as often as not lead to one person repelling the other rather than it drawing them closer together (recognition of the self through the other with a lens of self-hatred: fiona & mandy, fiona & mickey, svetlana & mickey, even mickey & mandy sometimes although that’s more complicated)

#people will be like why does x hate y when they're so alike????? well.#yes “first-date” fiona is a hypocrite about mandy “skankovich”#perhaps one could first consider why this might be #and if it's a writing choice which reveals things about the characters #acceptance of the other would mean accepting something about themselves that they reject #this may be even truer of mickey and svetlana who are very similar in their outlook and loyalties (svetlana -> yevgeny : mickey -> ian)#and all that similarity does for them is lead to almost murderous outcomes before they're finally able to reach a detente #i'm sure i could think of some other examples that don't involve the milkoviches but hashtag my idées fixes #hm. will i ever write a real post? no! only bullshit #*yes fandom is made of discrete individuals (including me) but allow me to generalize
