How is Rob Reiner not trending? Celebrity deaths don't often get to me, but the murder of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele hits so hard. He was the director of so many movies that informed Gen X. The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Stand By Me. I am saying goodbye to a part of my youth. RIP Rob Reiner. Thank you for all of the memories. 😭💔😭

I remember an interview with a guy that did the camera work for nature documentaries and he said that baleen whales like these guys were the scariest things to shoot because “They’re the size of a train, they can suddenly appear out of nowhere in dark or murky water and they don’t make a goddamn sound. I was absolutely sure that one of them was going to hit me and well, ‘that’s all folks!’. Gave me a lot of perspective on how I handle myself when filming smaller animals now.”

hi i know “don’t believe everything you read on tumblr” has been said enough times at this point in the website’s tenure but i want to specifically say that there is a problem on tumblr and other social media where well-known science enthusiast accounts basically build trust as Knowing Things and then they can say anything they want about those things & everyone just believes them. this is especially a problem among ppl posting about ecology & animal science in my experience.
i’m absolutely throwing stones in my own glass house bc i almost never used to include sources on my wildlife science posts on my old blog but these days i try to make a point of it & i think others should too.
i don’t even think anyone is lying or making things up on purpose. i think they’ve just heard it from another source they consider reliable & they’re spreading incorrect or incomplete information without questioning it, to a much larger platform. about ten years ago I myself made a post repeating something a wildlife professor said to me, which turned out to be outdated info and mostly inaccurate. i trusted him as a source, but i should have looked at the data before sharing it to a wider audience. it was an important lesson!
basically idc how many times popular content creators on here or any other site/app have been correct about other things in other posts. you should still make a habit of asking yourself “what’s the source?” even when it’s a blog you like & trust. bc let me tell ya, i have seen some doozies lately
reblogged this a couple days ago going "I should check my work more I guess so people can evaluate what I'm doing but this stuff is so high effort" and you. friends. my good friends. consider that while that is ONE reason that checking your work if you are going to claim Expertise on a subject is good practice, it is not the real reason.
the real reason we should always do a quick fact check is that it is so, so easy to publicly declaim that something which is absolutely absurd, totally contrary to your expectations, bizarre and unbelievable... which actually is true. This gets even more important as we age and as the time at which we learned our foundations of knowledge gets farther away. the higher your claimed level of expertise, the higher this burden.
and my, the experience of claiming that expertise and that responsibility, right as someone else blinks and yells back "no, <em>you're</em> wrong!" and then eviscerates you with peer reviewed citations and acceptable methodologies? coming from someone who tends to be talking (or typing) as I think? well, look. that experience is mortifying. imagine being wrong about something you just claimed expertise in, even if it's just expertise like "as a biology major, I..."
mortfying. imagine. you invoked your expertise and your knowledge like a badge of trustworthy authority and the yellow paint sloughed off the plastic immediately. there's a sticker that got wet and crinkly somewhere along the way.
and you called attention to that?
look, I don't believe in cringe 95% of the time, but I am sorry that is just mortifying. oh, oh, your social credibility is going down the shitter for this one. this is like that gaffe with the ferns ten years ago that no one ever lets you forget. oh, you drew attention to how great your knowledge of that was and you immediately flubbed it worse than paul blart flubbed mall copping.
citing your sources?
citing your sources is a great preventative of that moment. that's why we do it. that's the real reason, so if a nasty little keyboard warrior wants to fuck with your argument, you can whip out your bibliography (or one you've pulled together on the spot) and smite them with an experiment-by-experiment mini-review of the topic. or, on the gripping side, so you don't lunge out of the background like an outraged moray eel at an assertion that looks absolutely outrageous to you and worth clowning at all costs. that's gonna happen to you even if your outrage comes from having watched neuroanatomical talks about gymnotiform electric fish at seminars every week for years because Prof Z's lab worked on them and also you'd always loved the whole clade, and the thing is that motherfucker that bit about the eel that looked insane really is true: only about 20% of an electric eel contains its whole body, and the rest of it is a giant tail that contains almost entirely electric organs.
anyway I just realized that I have misread this figure (to be fair usually presented to me very quickly during conference or seminar talks) for going on 10yrs now (almost certainly automatically inferring the main electric organ as some kind of alimentary shorthand). so uh now the world is a cooler and significantly weirder place in my understanding of it. AND I can make talking about my avoided gaffe a relatable parable instead of actually having to find my mistake embarrassing, because I looked it up BEFORE I hit send.
the "oh yeah that makes sense" instinct in the human brain is one of our greatest assets, evolutionarily speaking, and also one of our greatest enemies.
it's been the engine of our intelligence for hundreds of thousands of years! it helped propel us to where we are now! and it inevitably runs aground on the fact that the universe is incomprehensibly vast and under no obligation to make sense to our little monkey brains.
this goes both for the "I thought of a thing, and it makes sense to my brain, so I'm going to start assuming it's true in the world, and double down or fight against any opposing evidence" route (aka the Greek Philosopher method) and also the "this doesn't make sense in my brain so I refuse to believe it can be true in the world and will accuse as a liar anyone who says otherwise" route.

Like, everyone can write what they want and I wouldn’t have a problem with it if it was consistently tagged and if every single person writing x reader fic didn’t throw it up into the fandom tag with no read-more cut. Just a giant block of text. That’s what AO3 is for, assholes, put it over there and tag your post accordingly so that people can blacklist it!
