i used to tutor this guy (16 yo/10th grade) whom i hated - just to understand the type of person, his dream was to become a cop and he thought he knew everything about anything
anyway i quit tutoring him after enduring him for almost a year when i reached the last staw.
we were studying macromolecules and since i'm cool and i like interactive lessons i showed him my periodic table. he looked at it and said "it misses some elements!" and, actually, not wrong - the periodic table i use isn't complete on the 7th period, because it's old and i'm not a fucking nuclear chemist, as i told him too. I asked what was missing and he said "ammonium!" and i tried so hard not to laugh because he was so convinced.
i explained "ammonium" is not an element but a compound derived from ammonia (ofc i had to talk like i was explaining physics to a child, but you get it) and he FUCKING KEPT INSISTING I WAS WRONG???? BRO I'M AN ORGANIC CHEMIST AND YOU FAILED 9TH GRADE??? i spent the next 30 minutes (WITHOUT MAKING HIM PAY FOR THE EXTRA TIME BECAUSE IT BECAME A MATTER OF PRINCIPLE FOR ME) explaining the basics of organic chemistry and still. he told me again i was wrong because...he saw a tiktok about ammonium.
in that moment i realized not everyone can be saved and sometimes people you tutor are just rude and stupid. the next day i called his mom and told her i couldn't tutor him anymore, making up an excuse. i don't know what he's doing now but i suppose not good.
