"Scrap Metal Alchemist"
"[A] period of overproduced consumerism, the modern world is waste generator … From agriculture, automotive and industry, broken, rusty, bent, worn, the waste has a past, a message. Out of context, assembled by welding, diverted from their utility without expression, they become useless but alive. My work is focused on the movement of the harmony of form and sequence of curves. In a figurative style, size and theme [are] very variable, each piece is original and unique." - christianchampin.chez-alice.fr/
some amazing found object faces in this clip/documentary...

this time, with more durable magnet/attachements...
Plastic Mask w/ Stencil
A mask made of shoe inserts and dixie cup tops, laid over the remains of the previous mask's spray paint shadow...
Inadvertant Stencils from yesterday's (last!) meeting....
some on plastic, others on wood.
Sometimes inspiration comes full circle...
Remember when we harvested those large expressive palm fronds? I think I was subconsciously inspired by those when I was working on this particular mask, and then the mask....along with leftover pieces, inspired this faux plant idea....
Iterations...
Trying to finish this mask....having a hard time commiting to the mouth...
Some misc. thoughts + self-reflection....
AA: I don't know how our project will turnout in the end. The project's reception (how other people see, use, interpret, interact with it) is out of our control. And it is more or less an experiment--an intial test that is simultaneously the final outcome.
Regardless of all that, I'm really proud of our work and ideas. I've been consistently inspired by the concepts that flow through what we've made and the territory we've covered. For me, the project has extreme depth...it has, and will, continue effect my art practice in the long term.
As I continue to work on the last few masks, I am still incredibly challenged by the fact that they must be touchable and wearble. As I've said before, until this point, I've never really delved into wearable art. It is a large undertaking...expanding our parameters from "how does it look" and "what does it mean" to "how does it feel" is tremendous. It has no doubt made our work harder (and slower)....as the idea (or weight?) of craft has become much more present. But this is a place I like to exist/work in...so I'm happy to be here.
Even so, I hope it brings a tiny bit of happiness/joy/playfulness to people...through the wearing of the masks, or the watching of other people wearing them...or the iron man's goofy grin.....or for some other reason we didn't even anticipate....
AA's Masks 2 and 3...
Getting closer to calling these done. Then I'll be down to the last mask.....The one below seems to be about horror/surprise....I worked really hard to get all the parts of Great Stuff to relate to one another. (I suspect I've spent 5 hours on this mask to date....)
This next one (below) reads like a robot elephant....kind of lacks emotion. (cocktail shaker eyes...and a pie pan snout). I may delete the snout, and replace it with an adjustable smile. See bottom-most image. The smile would be reversible (the mouth would be attached to the mask frame with a magnet)...so it could be happy or sad. This idea was inspired by your two faced mask.
Some photos of our 8' shelf and head mock-ups...
Workspace....it's a battle against time and messes!
More Pareidoloia...
I came across this #pareidolia photo in my instagram feed today. It was taken by Sean Ripple...who, coincidently, works at AMOA/Art House.
@ripple1213
I then went on to look up the hash tag #pareidolia on Instagram. Found a lot of really awesome photos of all sorts of things--many that can be interpreted as faces, as well as a myriad of other things (like the pen mark that appears to be a bird)

IP: uh wow sorry for spamming with every new update. I think these designs will be final, though I might want to add more to the top face there...next step: painting/coloring!
IP: some more WIP shots...I'm really liking how the bird one is coming out so far. Still need to work on the design for the fire-monster...
