gift for @jeynehopper, who was one of the first friends i ever made on this blue hellsite five-ish years ago. she requested either a reincarnation drabble or a modern au based on the ~controversy~ about the new self-service gas stations in oregon. i combined both prompts into one fic because i’m not a coward. that having been said, this 1606-word mess doesn’t know whether it wants to be crack or angst and i’m sorry i’m like this. but anyway, happy birthday, megan! i love you!

Strange how a galaxy succumbs to thermodynamics, the stars freezing into place and nothing of note happening ever again, while another one is pulled apart by its own ambitions eons later, “This is the Big Crunch; fire, not ice,” and yet another dissolves into dark matter and cosmic froth after more time has passed— but some laws of physics remain constant, like how photons can still trace so exquisitely the upside-down parabola of someone’s lips and map the electric jolt of hazel eyes boring into dark brown.
