On This Day: March 16, 1920 A bill to annex a portion of North Brunswick Township to Milltown passed in the Legislature after amendments narrowed the boundary lines and added a referendum so Milltown voters could decide the issue at the April 27 presidential primaries. Mayor Christian Kuhlthau stepped directly into the fight for the measure after returning from the South, supporting a compromise that would keep the Oak Hill School House in North Brunswick while annexing nearby properties. Assemblyman Fred W. DeVoe, who introduced the bill, explained the changes, stating: "Two changes were made… to satisfy the opposition from the Township of North Brunswick, and also to allow those who live in Milltown… an opportunity to be registered either for or against annexation." 📜 A snapshot of a heated local political debate in Milltown more than a century ago. #Northbrunswick #NJ #annexation #vote

🚋 On This Day – Nov. 28, 1924 Robert J. Mills died after being struck by a Public Service trolley near Heinz’s Switch. The accident happened around 10:30 PM as the car neared Foch Street. Mills suffered internal injuries and passed away at Middlesex Hospital. The trolley was operated by LeRoy Higley under William Haggerty's supervision. 🚍 Milltown Holds the Line – August 1, 1923 - #OTD During New Jersey’s widespread trolley strike, Milltown commuters were hit especially hard. With no cooperation from Perth Amboy officials and rough road conditions, morning transit was nearly shut down—until New Brunswick stepped up. By midmorning, buses were rerouted from Codwise and Burnet Street to serve Milltown. Commissioner Connolly mobilized a citywide response, promising improved service by day's end and holding fares at 10¢, only slightly above the trolley rate.
