Get to know Michelle DeYoung
Before you see her on our stage this weekend, take a moment to meet our featured guest artist, mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung.
I was born in Grand Rapids Michigan, with all the other Dutch Americans, but mostly raised in Colorado, which is where I currently reside.
What education have you completed?
I have a bachelors of Music and an honorary Doctorate of the Arts.
When/how did you know you wanted to be a singer?
When I was in college, I was in the campus choir. I sang a solo, and the choir director said I should consider a career. I thought, why not try? I will do everything I can and if I get no encouragement by 25, I will quit and do something else. At 23, I won the Met competition and moved to New York to be a young artist there, and I have and worked full time since leaving that 3 year program.
Be with friends and family, laugh, read, fish, hike, go to museums, go to orchestra concerts (I know, I know...but it's true!!!) and I am a huge sports fan - especially the Denver Nuggets.
Right now, the music/song/piece I can’t stop listening to is….
Halo covered by Ane Brun.
If you weren’t a singer, what would you do for a living?
Something like work in an orphanage in Africa, I think.
What are you hoping to see, do, or eat during your visit to Milwaukee?
I am hoping to not see ice, snow and wind, and to see lots of sun (ha ha)! Honestly, I would like to explore the city a bit, as I didn't get a chance last time I was here.
