on our time in Fogo, this is what I remember of you, and us -
Somewhere in the city we stayed There was land filled with black sand just up and over the hills, down some long and rocky path We followed the stench to the fresh water of the ocean There, we stayed for some time Getting lost in the waves, you held my hand Under the sun, we smiled I saw you laugh that day You gave the light a run for it's money How beautiful and bright you were So full of life, you made me feel it too Switching keys before we went our own way after dinner Waiting til dusk to sneak into your space again Even on a foreign twin bed, we managed to sleep well In dimly lit bathrooms and just big enough showers, you touched me We would rise with the sun and hope that no one noticed at breakfast It felt something like the night before a wedding
the hiatus is over
I’m back again
dear mama
We’ve lived in the same apartment our whole lives The carpets, for some time were an old musty green Our kitchen floor, this pale yellow I remember the feel of our couches down to the way they sometimes made me itch
We never owned a house in the suburbs Clean tile and pretty hardwood was foreign There were no marble countertops or cookies everyday And sometimes I’d see everyone in the world before I saw you in one day
But you built home out of yourself I’m almost 20 now and just seeing it My own home in the suburbs looks a lot like you Your eyes, your arms You built picket white fences around your heart and kept us there You built sky decks out of our dreams when looking up was impossible Planted faith and determination Poured love into everything I had already soiled and watched me grow some more You asked for our truths and now you guard them as secrets You carried our burdens on your back, I can see it in your shoulders mama
I called you the other day to say sorry Sorry about making you feel like the musty green carpets and the pale yellow floors weren’t enough And the couches, mama I remember the couches And yes they itched, but they made for great lava games So I’ll take the musty green carpets And the pale yellow floors I’ll take the itchy couches If I can have you forever
I hope a day without you never arrives Like the sun never wakes up and forgets to share her light with you I don’t want the stars or the sky to decide they need more beauty So desparate that they’ll pick you from the millions, drag you into their galaxy and all that’s left is space
things i would tell her
If I should ever have a daughter, here are some things I would tell her
Sex and men are not poetry I would tell her sex is not poetry And men are not to meant to be either While you can write sex and sex with men, they are not poetry They’re more complex Poetry, is a compilation of words Of your recollection of a moment such as sex
Sex, will eat you alive You’ll be going about your day, normal as ever And the slightest thing will remind you about that moment of bliss Perhaps it’s a hue of light It reminds you of his first time in your bedroom You’ve both just woken from slumber and now he is leaving And now 6am has this odd emotional significance and summer mornings aren’t the same Some other day, you’ll be standing in front of a mirror The countertop and your own eyes will haunt you You’ll recall him behind you, his hands groping all of your private parts Pushed up against and inside your womanhood You’ll never look at yourself the same, or you’ll never look at yourself at all And if ever you’re more brave than I am You’ll look at yourself naked And you’ll remember him all over you, you all over him And then your body is no longer yours That’s what sex will do to you It’ll come rushing to you, quick and vivid You’ll relive that moment of really great sex in the blink of an eye And then you’re back at work, going about your day as normal These flashbacks may or may not drag you back to his bed That’s the haunting part Knowing that your own mind and your own thoughts are the reason you two are still friends But not really
Men are not poetry Do not try to make a story out of their eyes You cannot read body language as well as you think Their hands holding your face as y’all kiss, like in the movies don’t mean anything more than they mean to tell you he wants to fuck you right then and there Men will tear you apart He’s half the reason you guys are still friends That just means you’re good enough to touch but not to love Poetry will never do that you Men however They’re inclined to love the way your body looks How it makes them feel like twice the man they really are just because now and then you let his name slip And that’s nothing to be ashamed about either But men are not poetry They will pound you down, into small little pieces Break you if you let them and you will forget you’re a woman They’ll do that often, or they’ll try And just because they come fully equipped Sometimes With what makes you scream and moan Does not make them men So when you find someone who does more than that Who elicits light and a free spirit from your bright eyes Maybe you can write him a poem But don’t you dare go try and turn him into poetry He will be all that on his own Especially if he’s the one you’re supposed to spending the rest of your 6am’s with, young lady
love languages
Love language number one Asking how your day went It’s genuinely asking what you did Who you did it with and did you have a good day Are you happy with what you did If not, what can we do to fix it and if you did What do we do to maximize your happy But I’m just being nosey
Love language number two Asking if you’ve eaten today It’s knowing it’s not pay week Maybe you’ve been busy or maybe there’s nothing to eat where you are And that’s probably it It’s my card number and bank account saved somewhere in the notes of your phone Me still calling to order your food for you, making sure I get you a drink as well It’s learning what you like to eat and what you don’t So I can show up late night with something I know you will Making sure you don’t go to bed hungry and knowing someone cares about your well being And speaking of well being, here is love language number three It’s showing up for you the same night you told me you were in love with someone else It’s getting out of bed sometime past 1am Sneaking into your place and forcing myself in your space We sat quiet in the dark that night I remember We didn’t sleep This love language is showing up even though I know you’re in love with someone else And still letting you touch me Except you don’t really It’s like you’re in me until you’re not Like you’ve just remembered I’m not her And now I’m stuck speaking love to myself because you don’t understand anymore
So now love language number four has become trying to teach it to you all over again It’s me laying naked in your bed Aimlessly dragging my tired fingers across the skin of your back Trying to build a road map back to who we used to be It’s scratching your scalp and letting my hands find home around your manhood It’s fighting exhaustion and the slumber you’ve just woken me from To ease your hard on and heavy heart Then it’s sleeping next to you, afraid that you’re still thinking about her Even after I’ve just abandoned all of my manners topping you off It’s touching you so loudly Passion falling out of my mouth Hoping you hear my screaming Hoping you listen and understand my love language Please
you pushed me away and now you hate me for leaving
i loved you so much i would have stolen the stars from the sky to replace the fears in your eyes
we happened again we keep happening when does it end when do we stop
I slept with the lights on again
You still plague my memory. I wonder when I will forget the way your face looks, the glaze over your eyes when we’re making love. I wonder when I’ll forget the sound of your breathing, your moans and sighs of relief. I want to know when I’ll forget the way your voice sounds a little strained when you’re just waking up, how it raises ever so slightly when we’re about to argue. I wonder when my skin will forget how you feel, when the home between my legs will welcome another man, and will it house him as perfectly as it did you. I wonder when my heart will make room for someone else, when I’ll stop having flashbacks midday, throughout work, while I’m eating, in the gym or surrounded by 20 other people. When does it stop being about you? I wonder when I will forget you, and then I wonder if I could ever really live with myself if I did. You still plague my memory. It all but breaks my heart and drags me back to you. I don’t know what to do.
if I start getting distant, know that I'm just trying to save u
