The boy blinked at her words, confused at the reply. He’s never had some refuse his photos, photos of them. He was so taken aback, the boy tried to open his mouth to object multiple times, but nothing passed his lips, immediately closing them shut. Something he had developed over the year was overthinking countless possibilities of how a certain interaction could go. Cristoph liked knowing the best and worst possible outcome, making him ready for just about anything. What he didn’t like, was if his calculations were wrong and he was left in an awkward situation. Like this one. When she finally took the photos, the boy carefully studied her expression, glancing between the photos and her eyes. “S-sorry?” he stuttered, still confused by the conversation. He wasn’t sure anymore if it was the language he didn’t understand or the behaviour. Probably both.

“--The mise en scéne’s beautiful,” Mimi offered eventually; but she was still holding the envelope back out to Cris, and it came out sounding as though she were struggling to find something kind to say about the photos...But, really, she liked everything about them but their subject. She studied aesthetics - a branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and appreciation of art, beauty and good taste - and could see that, objectively Cris’s photos were beautiful. If they’d been of anyone else she would have asked whether she could have one to frame above her fireplace, but when they were of her she just wanted to throw them into it. All she could see in them were her chubby knees and chunky thighs, and it made her re-think having lunch today...or ever. “--Do you want to go get a drink?” She asked suddenly, “I was on my way to meet someone for lunch but...Plans have suddenly changed.”

Cris was just talking with some friends when he noticed a familiar face in the corner of his eye. Apologising to the person he was talking to, Cristoph jogged over to the fellow student, fiddling with his bag. “I have something for you!” A smile appeared on his face as he handed over a white envelope, awaiting their reaction.

“Oh, I’m not falling for that,” Mimi held up her hands, as though she were afraid to touch the envelope, “I’ve been served before, you know?” But after a beat, she dropped her hands, and the act, to take the envelope and rifle through the photographs inside. “Oh...” she pushed her sunglasses up to the top of her head to get a closer look, “--is that what I look like when I smile?” 

With the kind of flourish only acquired from years of playing poker, she fanned the photos back into a tidy pile, and tucked them back into their envelope. Offering it back to Cris, she suggested, so dry that it wasn’t entirely clear whether or not she was joking, “you should sell these to Tatler, next time I end up in rehab.”
