Mermaids are legendary aquatic creatures of the ocean, usually depicted with the upper body of a female, and a large tail of a fish. The word mermaid derives from Old English mere (sea), and maid (woman, girl). They were even referred to as merewif, and are usually believed to be breathtakingly beautiful woman with long hair. Their tails vary in color, but most are believed to lean towards a alluring golden color.
The first stories of mermaids appeared in ancient Assyria, where the goddess Atargatis transformed into a mermaid because of the guilt felt from killing her human lover. They also are closely related to the Greek mythology creatures, Sirens. In most European culture they are depicted as malevolent creatures (as are most supernatural/strange creatures). They are believed to lure (specifically) men in with their beauty and voice, and drag them into the ocean for a cold death.
They’re have been many ‘sightings’ of mermaids for centuries. Even in Christopher Columbus’ journal he claimed to have spotted two during his voyage. There is also belief of there to be Mermen, the male counterpart of mermaids. In most folklore, mermen are depicted to be hideously disgusting creatures with seaweed hair, a beard, and a trident. However in Finnish folklore, they are believed to be just as lovely as the mermaids. They’ve been known to provide ailments for disease, sink ships by summoning storms and luring women to the ocean for their deaths.
