September 30th was Korean holiday called Chuseok. It is Korean version of Thanksgiving. During Chuseok, people thanks to their ancestors by having special event. It is called ancestral rites. Thesedays, not many people do this event because it is very difficult. Before we have a ancestral rites, we need to prepare foods. However, we can't make any food. We must follow the rules. For example, we can't use hairtail, Pacific saury...etc. When you change thses fishes to Korean, their name finished with chi. Also, we can't use dried red pepper powder and garlic condiment. Finally, we use white seasoning instead of red adzuki beans. When we finish preparing food, we need to place them in order. We usually place the food in five rows.
At the first row, we put rice, soup, glass, spoon and chopsticks. At the next row, meat and fish will be placed. At the third row, we put stew and put dried fish and sweet rice drink at the fourth row. Finally, we put fruits and ape diet. Then we can have a ancestral rites. Here is the most important tip. Put fish at east side, meat at west side, head of fish at east, tail at west. Plus, dried fish at end of left side, sweet rice drink at end of right side. Finally, put red fruit at east side, white fruit at west side, and put ape diet in order of jujube, chest nut, pear, and dried persimmon.
This is the picture of the food and location.
As you see, preparation is very difficult so, only few people do this including our family. There are same event called memorial service. These events are same except the time when we have these event. People have ancestral rites at 7 A.M. and memorial service at 7 P.M.
