              SIDNEY WAS bored , restless , and honestly ? a little lonely . he hadn’t had the chance to make any actual friends since his arrival here in wrenbury , but after a couple of drinks alone in his cabin , he decided he wanted to change that ; for some reason he thought the best way in doing so was to simply wander around the camp until he found someone nice to talk to . pouring a little more alcohol into a coffee mug - as he thought it looked less conspicuous - sidney had left his cabin and carried out his plan until he met the woman . “ coffee ? it could be . ” he shrugged , but then he began to laugh . “ it’s not . but you know where surprisingly has really good coffee here - if you’re interested ? the diner ! they actually have the best coffee i’ve ever had . ”

 the figure was marginally less threatening once he reached the light her cabin provided.  sometimes mina feared her ex-husband would find her, and for a moment before sidney came into view, her heart rate had jumped at a panicked increase.  ‘I’ve never actually been to the diner.’  mina answered honestly.  since her arrival, she had mostly kept to her own cabin, still slightly unsure of the strangers she shared home with. ‘do you know the way?’

          » parker looked down into the mug, as if he would  be  able  to  tell  its  contents  from  looking  at  it  in  the  dull  evening  light.  ❝  yeah  i  guess  so.  it  smells  like  it  has  orange  in  it.  the  sign  had  pictures  of  all  kinds  of  fruit,  so…  ❞  he  trailed  off,  still  looking  into  the  cup  as  if  the  names  of  the  fruits  would  come  to  him  any  moment  now.  ❝  okie  dokie,  if  you’re  sure,  ❞  he  beamed.  it  was  hard  to  believe  that  the  boy  even  knew  what  situation  he’d  gotten  himself  into  by  visiting  wrenbury.  ❝  when  i  drink  coffee,  my  heart  starts  to  beat  really  fast  and  i  feel  like  i’m  going  to  have  a  heart  attack  or  something.  i  think  that’s  why  i  can’t  have  energy  drinks.  it  makes  me  wonder  how  anyone  gets  to  sleep  with  caffeine  in  their  system.  ❞

unable to help herself she peered into the cup, narrowly avoiding bumping heads with her companion.  ‘looks.... interesting..’ she mused. ‘well I still have a medical licence so if that does turn out to be rat poison, I’ll pump your stomach.’ the comment was meant to be in jest but in the long while since mina had last engaged in laughter or joking, she silently worried it would not come across as such.  her smile relaxed.  ‘well... why do you think I’m awake so late?’ the brunette answered, pointing towards the four empty coffee cups that sat across from her.

“Many new faces, sure. There’s also a great deal of people here without faces…” He seemed to be talking more to himself as he took a swig from his glass and turned back to her.

“Besides. I’m not that kind of Reverend. You need a priest or deacon to perform Mass. I’m merely a pastor, and consequently, it is not within my power to administer such rites. And even if it was..” Mr. Harding chuckled darkly. “Most people aren’t comforted by religion. Unless you’d like me to give an inspirational speech in front of the bulletin board covered with missing person posters? That would surely capture the mood.” He shook his head, his voice, and mind, seeming to come back to Earth. “Like I said. I can’t give a mass. But I could give a homily, hold a vigil, or even a prayer group, I suppose. Bit of morale wouldn’t hurt.” He met her eye. “You know my name, but the experience is not mutual.”

mina felt the small light within her go out.  he was right of course, speaking the truth no one wanted to acknowledge.  ‘I wouldn’t know, I’m not religious....’ her words dwindled, trailing off as he continued to speak. ‘I saw some new missing posters go up this morning so maybe this evening we could do a candlelight thing? just, well, like you say, to boost morale.’  her small smile returned, attempting to regain her manners. ‘oh right, sorry. I’m mina.’

          » parker was struggling to settle down for the evening.  something  in  his  gut,  which  he  assumed  was  an  instinct  of  sorts,  told  him  something  wasn’t  right.  he’d  made  a  trip  over  to  the  main  hall  to  fill  a  mug  with  fresh  juice  from  the  kitchen  before  walking  the  grounds,  hoping  to  work  off  some  of  his  anxiety  before  the  curfew.  he  paused  when  the  woman  spoke  to  him.  ❝  oh  this  ?  no,  it’s  juice.  i’m  not  sure  what  kind,  ❞  he  hadn’t  been  able  to  read  the  sign,  ❝  coffee  is  too  bitter  for  me,  really.  i  have  a  sweet  tooth.  but  i  can  go  and  get  you  a  cup  of  coffee  if  you’d  like  -  you’ll  have  to  tell  me  how  you  like  it.  ❞

at this point in her life, mina was somewhat certain coffee ran through her veins where blood once was.  she craved the drink that caressed her insides like a warm hug--- something she had not felt in a long while.  ‘well I hope you’re a fan of all kinds of juice.’ she mused, her small hands filling her pockets.  ‘no you don’t have to do that. actually I should probably cut back on coffee, maybe then I’ll actually get a decent night’s sleep for once.’

“Dr. Harding, please…call me Dr. Harding…” He pleaded halfheartedly, putting the glass down and removing the robe, revealing just a gray undershirt. The man then let out a long, tired sigh. “I can see I’ve made this encounter even more unpleasant than it should have been given the circumstances. My apologies.” Tossing the robe onto his bed, the scene was all too reminiscent of his marital life back home. At least, it was, until she left him.

After slipping into a sweater, he looked back over at her. “This does not change the fact that you require something of me. Well. What is it?” 

'....dr harding, right.’ she almost smiled, unable to completely prevent the expression from painting her features.  ‘no--- it’s fine, i’ve had plenty of unpleasant encounters and this doesn’t even make my top ten, it’s just--- not what i expected to see first thing in the morning.  i was actually here to see if you’d fancy conducting a morning mass or something? there’s a lot of new faces here and well, maybe it’ll settle them.’

Starter, Open (Nathaniel Harding, he/him)

The doctor stood there in silence for a few moments, processing the whole thing. It wasn’t the best position to be caught in, after all. Barely six in the morning and the person standing in the door had just found Nathaniel nursing some whiskey, still in the process of getting ready for the day.

The irony of the situation could not be ignored by either of them. The crucifix above the bed, the bible on the nightstand, the clergy robes he was wearing, and the medical bag that sat on the floor next to the bed, was in stark contrast to the open bottle of liquor, firmly shut blinds, aspirin tablets scattered on the desk, and of course the glass he held in his hand. It painted a bleak picture of the man that was known throughout the camp as someone who could heal both body and soul. It did not necessarily make his deeds any less genuine, but instead cast doubt on the welfare of the man himself.

His face was a mixture of confusion, alarm and guilt. The man was incredibly private, so to be seen like this was less than ideal. After several more seconds, he seemed to compose himself, managing a meek “Did you need something?” There was another pause, and then, turning slightly towards them, he stated, “I consider the commons my de facto waiting room, if you require assistance with an injury or whatnot. But the look on your face tells me this is either an act of urgency…or blatant carelessness.” There was slight discernment in his voice, but no condemnation.

truthfully the sight she found was somewhat offensive to her, and mina met it with an expression of pure disappointment. nathaniel was a) a holy man, and b) a medical professional: both figures of authority and levelheadedness their camp required.  ‘what the hell are you doing? do you know what time it is?’ was the first thing that fell from her mouth.  immediately she was flooded with those all too familiar memories of her ex husband, the smell of whisky on his breath as he would lean in and call her his ‘special girl’ while she inwardly coward with fear.  ‘the only one being careless right now is you, nathaniel.’

stevie sighed, staring at the drawing she was working on. she was trying to come up with new tattoo ideas for the shop but she was stuck on colors and getting frustrated. she turned her sketchpad around to show the other. “do you think blue and purple is too tacky for this? or should i go for something else?” @finalgirlstarters​

'blue and purple?’ responded mina, peering across at the other’s notebook. art was something she had never been particularly good at, and something she was sometimes envious of those who excelled at.  that feeling of creative jealousy had undoubtedly subsided the day her daughter drew her first picture for mina, which held its pride of place on grandma’s fridge. ‘whoever said less is more is a moron.’ she answered finally, smiling warmly at the younger girl.

( open starter @finalgirlstarters​ ) there was something about the tranquility of the evening air that seemed almost haunting to the brunette, who stood on the porched area outside her cabin, night breeze blustering gently across rosy cheeks.  there were no car alarms, no bustling of traffic or city life, no dogs barking---- just quiet.  it was almost eerie, sinister-- but for now it was peaceful.  ‘hey.’ she spoke softly to the person approaching in the darkness, ‘that better be a cup of coffee in your hand.’

named after mina murray from her father’s favourite novel, ‘dracula’, the brunette always attempts to embody her namesake’s bravery and integrity.  however, even from a young age mina attracted the worst kind of people as a reflection of her honest (and naive) nature.  her marriage started out as perfect as could be perceived, a white wedding with each detail immaculate━━ except her husband-to-be. 

she fell in love blindly, falling hard and fast for the man of her dreams, ignorant to his undeniably evil side.  refusing to acknowledge his atrocities lead quickly to a downward spiral of offering false alibis to the police for his whereabouts, stealing supplies from the hospital she worked at, and lying to her friends, her family, and herself.

it became too much one spring morning, when her husband asked her to kill a patient she was caring for.  she had lied, cheated, stolen medication and documents both━━ but she had never killed. she was not a killer.

realising how deeply into his deception she had fallen, mina stole away into the night with their daughter in her arms to somewhere they would not be found...

for the first time in a long time her little girl was safe, tucked away in hiding with a close friend. mina had other priorities, removing her ex from her life for one.  the threats began as soon as the divorce was finalised and mina knew it would only be a matter of time until he found her...
