“if you ran into the person you last had a serious relationship with, would you say things are awkward or would you say that you still felt something?” malik asked, glancing over at the person next to me. “it’s just something i’ve been thinking about since running into my ex last night.”
“Damn, i love this heat. summer is the best time of year. the scorching hot sun. such a good time to workout, do whatever you want without being bundled up in twenty pieces of clothing so you don’t freeze your ass off,” he said to the person next to him. he had been out in the park taking a walk. he stopped for a second on the bench to take a drink of his water. “what do you think? are you a summer person? maybe it’s just me, growing up in hawaii, the heat becomes a part of me,” he chuckled.
“Okay, but like… highkey, though, I would die for Robin in Stranger Things,” Billie let out, nodding her head as if it were the most relatable thing in the world, “Like, I just finished season 3 and I know a lot more important things happened, but I would definitely give my life for her, no questions asked.”

alice had grabbed her coffee and cheerfully told the barista to “enjoy hers too” in reference to a drink she didn’t have. “fuck, fuck, fuck.” she muttered to herself as she scurried after giving the barista an awkward wave and a smile that looked more like she was in pain than anything. it was just her luck that her foot got jammed up under the carpet and she stumbled forward almost fumbling her coffee. she groaned and straightened up while rubbing her face as she looked at the nearest person. “you saw all of that, didn’t you?”
eliana leaned against the bar, looking to the person across her. the bar had slowed down a little bit where she could stop and chat for a minute. “you know, it’s kind of rude to tip people poorly and then leave your phone number.” she commented, “i don’t know who they think is going to call their cheap ass, but it’s not me.”

“sometimes when i see a super tall dude in the street, i really really hope it’s godfrey gao. sure, i don’t know if he lives in new york or not but i’m really hoping for a meet cute with him so i can pretend not to know him and then marry him.”
“i’ve gotta take a trip to the art store.” millie announced. “i mean, i don’t necessarily have to go to the art store but my sketchbook is full of designs and i need a couple of new ones. plus, i’m super picky about the pencils i use and anyways, i’m sure you don’t care but it’d be super cool if you’d tag along and run my errands with me.” she smiled, tilting her head. “you in?”
“i just grow tired of it,” mateo shrugged, eyes averting as he nursed his golden margarita on ice. it was friday night and he should have been with his girlfriend, but something had happened at work today that he wasn’t ready to tell her yet. “so, i quit. cornell is so far that i am alone without mi amor or mi familia when i am there, only see them on weekends or off-days when i come back to the city. they do not treat me well, the pay is small-” he sighed, taking a gulp of his alcohol. “i have never quit anything in my life. i do not know what to do now. maybe i have made a large mistake.”
“do you think it’s weird or confident to go out to eat or go to the cinema alone?” she mused. “all of my friends are on family vacations this summer and i’ve no-one to go soak in sun with, i was like, i could go alone but i just like, i can’t. i’m not that kinda girl. but i see like people in full out restaurants on their own and going to the cinema. i don’t know if i find it sad or not.”
“i got set up on a blind date the other night and it went so well.” symone announced with a smile on her face. “when’s the last time you went on a blind date? i wasn’t even sure people did them anymore because as long as you know their name, social media pretty much tells you everything you need to know.”
“no, i’m totally serious. it’s like, a photographic memory, but with music-” koko assured the other. they understood the disbelief that they were hearing, but they also knew that they were telling the truth. “tell me the lyrics of any song, and if i’ve heard it even once i can tell you the name and the artist. i don’t even really try to do it, it’s just like this fucked up wonky shit my brain does. the bitch can’t add decimals but it can sure as fuck remember a song.” leaning forward to rest their elbows on the counter of the record store, they shrugged and made eye contact. “test me if you don’t believe me; go ahead.”
Standing in line at the cafe, Hannah was playing on her phone. All the people behind the counter were new for the summer, kids hired while they were home from college, so she didn’t have any reason to be chatting with them as this was the cafe she worked at a month or so ago and they were hired after she quit. Looking up from her phone, she watched as a middle-aged woman began to give the cashier a hard time, letting out a sigh and turning to the person behind her. “I literally do not miss this job at all,” she let out, gesturing to the commotion.
The bar wasn’t necessarily empty. It never really was. Fitz had considered applying for some time, but his lack of patience with people would eventually stab him in the back. Instead, he ordered another whiskey and pulled out his computer, considering posting on the forums, but instead scrolling through it.
