Suspicion and a sprinkle of fear merged together inside Minjun, feeling cornered alike a street cat by the assail of questions; and more importantly — to him alone — was the enthusiasm that the other man carries with himself. Others would cower, hearts wavering in front of the… misfortune that had struck them, eyes looking away as if it would defend them from facing the inevitable truth that it did happen, here on this exact beach, just a few hundred meters away from where they stood; now all of it a memory that seemed have no intent of fading away, if ever. Minjun’s breath hitched, another moment of hesitation given alongside it, followed by a narrow of eyes towards him —- his eyes, turned dark, lingering on him, for what seemed like a moment too long.
“Are you an officer?" He questioned, abruptly and openly, borderline accusatory even, unfriendliness at the tip of his tongue, even with the knowledge of it being a step he shouldn’t of have done. To him, there was no other plausible explanation; or there was, lingering at the back of his mind, that the man before him was nothing more dangerous than a fanatic, one keen for the taste of the fictional (im)possibilities. Surely, the latter couldn’t be possible; not within the bounds of real world, as blurred as they came to be.
He raised his hand, then the other, uncovering the handmade shell bracelet around his wrist. "I was buying this when… whatever that was happened, so I wouldn’t know. I ran away, think I pulled someone with me or something like that. Everyone was scared, really — I didn’t look back towards the beach. And no, I don’t have a receipt — I ran, like everyone else, but I’m sure I could find the woman who sold me it or — or the guy who … brought it to my doorstep, when I thought I wasted money. They — they’d know."
There was a drop of doubt in the last parts; though this felt as a confessional nonetheless. Once it passed it lips, leaving into the air between them, Minjun’s face became less grim.
"You can swim, I think. I also think you’d rahter freeze in this weather, than get attacked by a monstrous face-hugging-murderous giant … squid.”
The question made sense and Hyun could not say he was surprised by it. after all, Hyun was making a lot of questions to a stranger and he couldn’t blame it for thinking that way. It did make him chuckle, as he quickly denied with his hands “No, no, a simple civilian with lots of questions and you happen to be the first one I ran into” Maybe the other had troubles with the police and that’s why he was so defensive, after all he felt like he was being accused of being a cop and cops, in his opinion, were the nicest guys of all. Maybe he had good experiences while this other guy had bad ones, there was no way to know.
He looked at the bracelet as he listened to the story, finally someone telling him something useful! “Oh I wouldn’t ask you for witnesses, I believe you, sounds like all the stories I heard at the hospital, I’m a doctor but I wasn’t here when it happened. I’m very curious, you know, can’t help to want to know the truth when everyone tells a crazy story” He continued “I’m not calling you crazy, but the entire thing is... well, a lot to digest” He finished with a sigh.
“Not if you wear a suit, I like surfing and I was told the waves here were amazing, but since this whole squid happened I haven’t been able to do anything, I’m feeling a little frustrated but that’s nothing compared to what some people went through” He said in a more humble tone. Surfing was nothing compared with staying alive. “I’m Hyun, by the way, Doctor Min Hyun”
