Hello! I have sort of a suggestion regarding your dilema with the continuation of Mutatum. I completely understand why you might decide to not complete it, but I've been thinking about the post you made about it for a while. You mentioned the Trevor Project and the Trans Lifeline as scrapped solutions because no one really reads the author notes: would it be possible to have a sort of "paywall" for Redivider or Mutatum in general, so that the money the readers would give to have access to the fic could go towards helping those organizations? (This is just an idea I had, and I just wanted to share it with you as a possible solution to the situation. Mutatum is literally my favourite thing to read, and I've read Evitative more times than I can count, so I would be really sad to see it go. This however doesn't mean that I would not respect your decision either way.)

This is a very cool suggestion! However...

I come from the generation of fic writers that is firmly in the camp of "NO MONEY FOR FANFIC EVER." I am old enough to remember fic authors getting cease and desist letters. It was and at times still is scary.

Basically, fanworks are still in a grey area, despite decades of fighting for them to be considered fair use. (This is why I support Ao3 wholeheartedly and why I am firmly against FFnet and Wattpad. They're making money off of it, which is a big no-no.)

Even though I wouldn't be personally benefitting from having a charity/non-profit-based paywall, I'm still apprehensive about someone needing to spend money to get to that fanwork content.

However, I'm not against heavily encouraging everyone who WANTS to pay or WANTS to send money to me to redirect to these organizations. It would be awesome if you could, because it's organizations like these that are trying to make life better for LGBTQ (especially the T), as well as trying to UNDO the damage people like JKR have done.

mutatum update: time got away from me, but it’s way more than just that

Honestly, I know that I should have made this post months ago… but I wanted to make a decision first. Then I realized that making a decision was insanely difficult, and I also realized that I actually wasn’t making this post because I didn’t know how to word it.

I haven’t made a decision yet and I still don’t know how to word it, but I’ll try to find some words regardless.

There are a lot of people wondering what’s been going with Mutatum/Redivider.

What’s been going on boils down to my feelings about JKR. Even though I’m mostly happy with what I’ve done and I am excited about the story I wanted to tell, I am having a hard time wanting to continue this story because of JKR.

JKR is foul. I’d known she was for a while, but I think I hit a breaking point with her. In the past year, I’ve taken down some certain magnets at work and peeled the deathly hallows symbol off my car. She’s gross, she’s detrimental to society, and… fuck her. I’m not going to get into all the reasons why because many of you already know. If you don’t already know why - google it.

I am cis, but still in the LGBT community. I am bisexual. I have no gender dysphoria but I am also completely apathetic about my own gender identity. I was assigned female at birth, have been called a dude online and offline multiple times throughout my life, and I just don’t… care. I identify as she/they because it’s the easiest way to explain my pseudo-apathy about it.

However, I’m also very cognizant of this not being the case for everyone. Even though I don’t care, I realize that it’s insanely important to many people to be identified correctly. Some of my favorite people in entirely different circles of mine (online and off) are trans.

And I have been hearing cries from so many people I love that even mentioning your Hogwarts house is painful because of what JKR, and therefore Harry Potter, has come to represent to trans people.

So… the thought of writing this massive story that could just be a stab in the heart of people I care for has been really troubling.

As of right now, I still don’t know what to do.

I’ve tossed around ideas of using the fic to promote organizations such as Trevor Project or Trans Lifeline, but as 95% of people scroll past the author’s notes that doesn’t even remotely feel like it makes up for what JKR has done. I’ve thought about having a trans character as an extra ‘fuck you’ to JKR, but (a) I’m not trans and I tend to do my best writing while drawing from my own experiences, (b) it wasn’t in the original plans of the story, and it would feel tacked on. The easiest idea is to just put the fic to bed, but that also isn’t sitting right with me because so many LGBT people have said they really like the allegory that’s built into it.

So. Yeah. That’s where I’m at.

I did promise myself I would be transparent with readers and that if I ever decided to give up on this story I would let you all know. Since it’s been so long I at least wanted to let you all know that I haven’t made a decision, but the story not getting finished is a real possibility.

Regardless of what happens, I sincerely want to thank you guys for your support - especially those who reached out to me while not getting a response. Thank you, and I’m sorry that things are so up in the air right now. Love you.

Now back to the subject, the Harry Potter fandom nowadays lives a love/hate relationship with the work. We LOVE Harry Potter and hate the author. I think that's also why we take the HP universe and do such beautiful things with it, because even though it was created by a bad person, the fandom wants a much better world (and HP).

so the megalodon is most definitely extinct? how do scientists know?

well, the thing about large predators is that they leave an impact on an ecosystem big enough that you can tell they’re there, even if you never observe one directly. in this case, we know they’re definitely extinct because of the behavior of whales! whales used to max out at about 50 ft long and were fast and agile, entirely because of predation by megalodon!

but about 2 million years ago, our whales began to rapidly increase in size until we ended up with real monsters like the blue whale. this pretty directly lines up with the extinction of megalodon, and the removal of the pressure they were putting on large whale populations.

basically, large whales can get away with being gigantic, slow tanks in the oceans today because there simply isn’t a predator big enough to take them on anymore. if megalodon still existed, we would be seeing its impact on whale populations! whales would be smaller, and a hell of a lot more skittish than they are.

everything in a given ecosystem is connected, and you can often get important information about the unknown parts by observing the behavior of other parts of the ecosystem.

All this, and the fact that if the ocean had sharks as big as Megalodon and had enough of them to sustain the species at all, we would have found at least one Megalodon tooth washed up on a beach somewhere that wasn’t fossilized. More likely, we would have found hundreds of such teeth every year for as long as we have existed. “We didn’t know giant squid existed!” is a common argument I see from cryptozoologists, but it’s also flat out false. We did know. We knew there were giant squid for centuries because we found remains of them for centuries. We simply hadn’t captured or filmed a live one!

Okay, so I am well aware that this isn’t at all how evolution or natural selection works, but I still want a horror film that begins with a pair of scientists with dramatic music playing in the background as they pour over piles of records, until one of them turns to the other and says “it’s the whales. The other scientist looks out the window, over the sea. “Mother of god,” she whispers.

Yeah fanfiction.net is dead AO3 and Wattpad took over

People keep saying this and it’s just plain false. Although FFNet is trash, that doesn’t mean it’s dead. It is still being widely used. I don’t use it and you might not use it, but it still gets a fuckton of traffic. 

And while I’m here, Wattpad is even trashier and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if some lawyers hit them at some point in the future because they completely piss all over the legal grey line that is fanfiction by making money off of it. 

Ao3 is the only one that’s made by fans for fans.

Hi, how are you? It's me again. I have a question about Evitative, Draco and Blaise substantiate some of their prejudices based on the fact that only thoroughbreds (is that how you speak English?) Can have an affinity with The Dark. But there is something that is bothering me a little bit, wouldn't Snape be evidence enough? After all, his father is a no magi human.

Hello! No worries on your English. :) I think the word you’re looking for is ‘half-blood,’ based off of who you’re asking about. 

This is something in the story that I’ll go ahead and slightly spoil: not everyone knows or has put two-and-two together that Snape is a half-blood.

okay, pure-bloods are just confirming the theory that if you are prejudiced you are ASS. Does it make sense for the story? yes, but I am shocked by the stupidity of the Slytherins in a general way. Use your brain and add one to one, damn it. Oh, and I really hope that Hermione declares herself into the Dark and that Charlie Weasley Dark becomes the cannon. (Yes, your story is the cannon, fuck JK) Keep rocking, you’re brilliant and your writing even better

I really, really have to recommend reading Evitative by Vichan on ao3

It's set in Hogwarts 5th year. Harry was accidentally expelled after the dementor attack and he had to be resorted. But this time, the hat put him in Slytherin. Everything changes in his life- losing old friends and gaining new ones, his Slytherin traits showing even more than before, but most importantly, he started dabbling in the Dark Arts.

And in this fic, Dark magic is stunning. It's absolutely beautiful. Any time any dark ritual is performed, I can't help but smile. The author also makes is abundantly clear that dark does not equal evil. It's a main theme. Dark. Is. Not. Evil.

I just started re-reading it purely for the ritual scenes. I cannot express just how incredible they are. It's a lot of purple, it's a lot of glow, and it's absolutely gorgeous.

It's listed as a harry/draco slowburn, but i'll be honest the plot of the story is so good that you don't even need the pairing. And besides, that doesn't even really come into play until the end. (It is a slow burn after all.)

Please, please please please read this! It's so magnificent!!! I cannot recommend it enough!!!! (And yes, i'll put a link in the reblogs)
