Try to break my muse’s heart in a single sentence.
sweetirrelevant:
As if it couldn’t have gotten worse, she thought to herself. Having only heard the sounds of water, shouts and jeers were the last thing she expected. She didn’t need much else to tell her instincts to hide.As fast she could manage, she hefted one leg up over the ledge first before pausing at the hard chill against the other.
But…that was strange to her–she didn’t remember ever fixing her hookblades–how could she, when they broke right before she dived into the fire? It didn’t matter now. She reached down to swipe at it before throwing the rest of her body over the edge, sucking in air as it skinned her leg. If they weren’t fast runners–and she really hoped they weren’t, she could hopefully make it to the opposite growth of trees and wait for them to pass. If not, well. She hoped her body wasn’t the same.
The demons broke through the clearing, human shaped creatures with wild, white hair and ashen skin, each brandishing a unique blade that required only one hand to carry. They looked harried, running from something in fear until one of them spotted her retreat. Then, their demeanor changed, becoming predatory and opportunistic.
Surely, this lone, helpless human would stand no chance against them.
They spread out, charging haphazardly with their blades high over head, quickly moving to surround the woman and prevent her further escape. One would step in, eagerness unchecked, to try and catch her leg and hobble her.

Confused sounded kind. She hated the dreams where she fell forward seeing the world in a finer detail than she has asked for, ever. She woke up to a cold, stinging shock on her feverish skin. Her eyes were burning from the harsh light earlier, but that was nowhere to be found. Instead, all she found were jagged gray stones and instead of roars, all she heard was rippling.
Where was she? She braced her hands on the edge of the smoothest rock she could find as she pulled herself out of the water. Right away the chill set in on her soaked body, both ways.
Her throat was hoarse as she looked around. “Anyone here?”
Her rest in the babbling brook might have seemed to go on for an eternity, giving time for the details around her to slowly fall into focus. The slate stone was jagged and broken, and murky water weaved through it in a bit of a rapid further downstream, though where she rested was shallow enough to only be waist deep. The sky was a dangerously sickly violet, like some strange unending sunset... and that all too familiar glowing orb in the sky was also weirdly not present, though it could have been hiding behind the adjacent trees or the darker clouds that seemed to linger overhead.
Then the war came with its pounding drums, distant at first, then the sounds of shouting and indecipherable screaming. Then came the disturbing of brush and running feet. Fifty? Sixty man sized people fleeing? It wasn’t until they entered the area of the river that they were revealed to not be fully human. Grey skinned men, armored like savages with weapons that looked jagged, rusty, and vicious. They’d attack a human on sight, no questions asked... if they found one there among the rocks
"Is it Invade Wei season already? I thought we had a treaty."
Who or what is your nemesis?
"There is... another voice in my head. It's critical of everything, especially me. It's important I listen to it, it finds my flaws and the flaws in the world around me so I can attend to fixing them... But it never stops, and when I stop listening everything rapidly gets worse. Constantly criticising, judging, demeaning. I can't escape it, only prove it wrong."The minister pauses for a moment then mutters under his breath, "alcohol usually stifles it."
tigerofjiandong:
To say he was annoyed and confused was the understatement of the century. Jian had only recently managed to go to sleep and now he had just been awoken by someone climbing through his window.
“That is more than an odd hobby. But why did you climb through my window?” He angrily stated slowly.
He watched the temper flare, which was anticipated. He could understand that it would be unsettling for someone to come crawling through your window. The minor public official did his best to not reflect any emotion, lest he feed the fires of the Tiger’s anger.
“Yes, that’s the thing, I’m not... very good at it yet, clearly, and I slipped. Fell into your window just enough and now it looks like the intent was to come through it because I was trying to get on my way.” He pressed his right fist into his left hand and bowed his head, now his hands not on the frame he could only balance precariously on the arches of his bare feet. “My apologies for rousing you, again. I’ll be on my way.” He began to turn and climb his way away from Sun Jian’s window. And certainly not up towards Sun Shang Xiang’s window, no, just right in a direction so he could get away from the heat of Sun Jian’s fury without stoking any more.
@tigerofjiandong
Jian sat up and turned his head slowly round towards the source of the noise. Was he seeing things?
“Yeah..of course. Why are you in my room? Actually why are you climbing through my window?”
Yes. Why was he climbing through Sun Jian’s window? He was definitely not climbing past Sun Jian’s window to get to his daughter, Lady Sun’s window... so he had to have a good reason to be in Sun Jian’s window. “I...” his mind raced, “like an occasional athletic challenge of climbing on nights like this.”
He motioned to the full moon out behind him, “with the cool night breeze and noone to really judge me for such an... odd hobby. Forgive me, I’ll leave you be.”
warriorsofhan:
“So nobody on their side had to die today. Alright, noted.” Misguided ones were deserved to be given another chance for the better. Luckily the bandit was spared as he ran away. But they were too many as they were mostly hidden on other spots. Yinping understands what ‘subjugation’ really do than ‘hunting them’. To her, they’re training dummies once they attack.
“That guy over there? He has the same gesture and weapon like Zhou Cang.” She had to do non-bloody ways of dealing with them and by possible, she’ll just go bare-handed by any chance. “I think we do can convince him to do good!”
He leaned slightly to one side to see around her and to the man she pointed out. Boyan wouldn’t be able to just instantly know who was who, and certainly didn’t have much in the way of advanced knowledge over the kinds of weapons and styles the other generals kept. However, that individual did stand out with a different weapon than the rabble, and seemed more trained. The individuals around him also seemed to listen - which pointed to that guy being a leader. “Correct. Let’s have a talk with him. We can give him the peaceful solution, and ever-” he moved his sword to block a villager who brandished a pitchfork at him, smashing his blade between the twines and twisting to wrench the weapon from the commoner. Disarmed, the dissident retreated and Boyan continued to follow the Lady Guan’s path.
“We will offer him, and everyone, the peaceful solution. And remind them, that if we fall, the combined forces of Shu and Wu will descend on this area in a fit of revenge - and no one wants that.”

“Natives from the other side? I do thought Nanman were the native ones but this way too new for me. Looking at their weaponry, they can equal us too which is good enough. Subduing them would be a great idea so, let’s do this!”
There goes Yinping with that mace of hers. Lu Xun was right on those people on the desert as they were native brigands on living through violent tendencies.
He stood still as she turned suddenly towards the desert, the mace blasting him with air as its spikes stopped only a few hairs breadths away from his face. He’d like to say he knew where she was going and predicted exactly how far she would turn, but he was very thankful he wasn’t wrong. He let her take a few steps away from him to attain the lead into the converging mass of dissidents, before he began to walk after her, loosing only one of the twin blades that hung at his hip.
“Today’s lesson is: no one has to die today,” he minded after her. “They believe the only way to survive another month is to take our supplies. These people in the front, lowly trained and equipped they believe what someone else is telling them, acting on someone else’s commands. That’s the person we need to reach. Can you spot them from this crowd?”
What are your thoughts about the chaos across the land?
That’s a good question. It is an excellent time to make change and rebuild after the wanton corruption of the Imperial Courts, caused in no small part due to the Eunuchs, Dong Zhou, and the Yuans. I don’t think anyone wants to be the ones to see a dynasty come to an end, as it had to the noble house of Liu. Cao Cao, for as much as people paint him a villian, has done an excellent job reigning in the North and centralizing power.
But one of the reasons the Han fell is because what works for the North no longer works for the South. Because of the chaos, the Wu has been able to tame the wild lands that former Han had never been able to reliably lead. It is unfortunate we required the chaos to accomplish as much as we did.
'Nonsense, there are more important things than meeting me. I understand. So please, tell me about your day. I am no celebrity just a mere person trying to do his best in the world. I have faults like others. I'm not perfect as people think I am. Your more of a celebrity than I am. We can have tea another time. When your not busy defending the borders. I can send you help if need it.' from Liubeiofshu
You are much too humble, King of Shu... or was it Emperor of Shu-Han these days? I am but a minor civil servant by comparison. Unfortunately, that leaves my schedule fairly wrapped up in the day to day workings of the state. That isn’t to say that we cannot meet up some time. Perhaps you’d like to join us at He Fei Castle? I think I’d be able to fit in a meeting there with you in a few months time. I’m sure it’s a little north and out of your way, but I hear the duck is delightful.
“Anybody want to train with me on a desert filled with very strong bandits?”
“First, we should not call them ‘Bandits’. Many of them are natives, others are refugees, and a lot of them are just brigands trying to survive with the only skill they acquired: Violence.” He looked the mass of them over, “We should subdue them, either way, as they don’t tend to pay taxes when they are all riled up like this.”
Pardons are Great. Titles are Better.
There was a plan for everything. Every event was significant, in its own way, to someone. Every skirmish was the most important skirmish of someone’s life, unfortunately because it was the last skirmish of their life. Meeting with any official was vital, they had an agenda, a plan of their own, and it was important to always press an issue so that agenda would coincide with the agenda set for the state by Lord Sun Quan, and any detail, to a clever eye, could be used to their advantage if it was not properly, and squarely, put in its place to serve its purpose.
Today’s meeting was one that Boyan feared many would overlook as too trivial to require a plan of attack. To many, it might have seemed a simple grant of title, a simple stamp upon a document, one of many like it that get stamped in a month. There would be ceremony later to celebrate what was decided here, as other individuals gained new prestige along with the one Lu Boyan now intended to meet. But this one was very important. She had been granted the pardon of Lord Sun Quan, and the right to take residence in the lands of Wu. For a refugee, this would have been no major consideration. People often fled the tyranny of the North to the warm, welcoming climates of Wu.
But she was a known murderer.
His attendants had their specific orders. They were to greet the the woman at the gates and lead him without words to his office. Past the training of local guards in vigorous midday activity. They would guide her through the market courtyard that his office overlooked so he could see her as she walked among the people of Wu going about their daily business. Up the stairs, with guards posted at every level, to the grand wooden door that separated his office from the hallway... and keep her at the door. They would knock to let him know that they were waiting, of course, and he would... make them wait at the door. Under the guise of him preparing at the last minute for her arrival, the attendants would stand at attention and wait patiently for the pass to enter.
He had been ready since this morning, but he was curious to see her patience.
Sorry, I don’t know how to split up a post from an ask. I did the best I could, but your icon was an unfortunate casualty.
Liu Shan nodded slowly, frowning ever so slightly as he gazed to observe his new surroundings. All he saw were trees, the moon cut out by the canopy of leaves above him. The fire by his side warmed his body slightly but it did nothing to warm his heart. This was not what he asked for. He did not ask to be stranded in the forest and he did not ask for all the murderers and bandits chasing after him.
Liu Shan sighed as he stared into the fire. It was a necessity to survive this harsh, cold night, but it could also attract unwanted attention. “We’ll need to sleep in shifts. It’s too dangerous here, we are too vulnerable.” Liu Shan glanced at Lu Xun. “Do you want to take the first shift or shall I?”
Lu Xun rubbed his hands together before almost putting his palms into the licking flames. The fire itself was of decent size, which was something he knew he spent too much time fussing over. Had the fire been too big, it would have easily been spotted, had it been too small and smoldering, it would have generated too much smoke and been easily spotted. The cold was intense in every direction, save the fire’s, and his fingers felt like they could become too brittle to work if he didn’t warm them.
His gaze shifted over to the King of Shu as he spoke, feigning attention as the obvious was stated and he tried to judge the situation further. They were both exhausted, he could feel it in his bones and at his very core just as he could clearly see it on the King beside him. Thinking back, neither of them had much rest since their capture by the brigands, and they had been running so hard since they had escaped neither of them really had much left to give. But, Boyan’s mind was alight with needs, and the adrenaline and fear still coursed through his veins. He’d not be able to welcome sleep if he tried. “Please, I would prefer the first shift.”
