Still can’t believe someone thought “Sanji isn’t kind, he only feeds criminals due to his trauma not out of kindness” was an intelligent take with no disgusting implications and that take got a lot of likes and reblogs

Sanji's acts of kindness is not just feeding people though. He also goes out of his way to save people, that even people on the crew were against saving. He saved Kinemon even when Chopper, Franky and Nami were against it. He also saved the G-5, marines. He also asked Luffy to save Reiju, his brothers and Judge. Luffy smiles, happy that his cook is kind.

For fuck sake, multiple characters call Sanji kind. Don't give me that "Oh, well they haven't met any other kind people, so they have nothing to judge Sanji kindness against." Why you discrediting these people words? They have been through horrible things and because of that, you think their opinions are less valid? Their judgement of being treated kindly for the first time, means nothing to you, as they have trauma? Make it make sense.

Anime only people may not be aware, but the manga has these little summarise of the characters occasionally. I think it's at the start of volumes. Anyway, Sanji's nearly always calls him a kind-hearted cook. In an SBS, it is explained that rats seek Sanji out, as he has a kind core.

Besides that, what Sanji went through does not automatically mean he would want to feed people. A villain could have the same backstory and instead of feeding people, decided to hoard food. Make sure they never go through that trauma again. Or he could have become avoidant. He could ignore people who need help, to avoid facing something traumatic again.

Sanji is kind, as despite everything he went through, he chooses to help people. Even if it could negatively affect him later, Sanji chooses to help people not suffer like he did.

Thank you for mentioning the character summaries, it is often missed ♥ Some other elements, because I find it fascinating how we are not supposed to need more than the Baratie arc to understand the point, (criminals or not):

Volume 6. First character summary for Sanji:

"Kokoro yasashiki ryôrinin" "Kind-hearted cook"

Note that this is stated just after the chapter he fed Gin.

Then, chapter 61. Gin states very directly why he can't kill Sanji and it is not because he fed him. It's because:

"…Anna ni hito ni yasashiku sareta no ha ore ha… umarete hajimete dakara.........!!!" "This is the first time in my entire life I've received so much kindness………!!!"

Meaning Gin did receive kindness before, but not to such extent that it makes him cry and betray a captain he admires and is extremely loyal to. Especially considering we were just told Gin is usually ruthless. (Hello Zoro parallels)

Gin only talks about the food afterwards, and it's for his whole crew.

Also see the flashback just before Gin's statement, because panels are important and mean as much as words:

Frame 1: "Eat." (vulgar, an order) Frame 3: "This shit's crazy good, eh?" (I tried to keep the "kuso" but also show how proud Sanji is of his food)

The food didn't have to be good, but Sanji likes to feed people actual good food.

The way he's smiling, the fact that his hair could hide his true feelings just like in the previous panel, where he tries to be nonchalant about it, but we can see his face, show how genuine he is.

As shown as early as his introduction, Sanji's kindness is his core. It's even the reason he's alive. It doesn't mean he's a saint. He's not pure hearted, he has a lot of barriers protecting that kindness, he will kick you in the face if you annoy him because he has a personality and is still a pirate.

Yet the word "yasashii"/"kind" is repeatedly used to qualify him, both intra and extradiegetically. "Show don't tell" is an art that takes the risk of being misinterpreted, but if you don't want to believe the narration or the characters, I think you can at least believe what the author tells you.

Sanji and Zeff make me ill. Wdym you have this renowned, violent pirate who literally got his name because he’s killed so many people, has been to the grand line and back, took one look at the little bitch boy that was Sanji at like age nine, heard he had the same dream as him and went:

“Fuck… looks like he’s my son now.”

Zeff really had no business saving or even keeping Sanji, literally nothing was stopping him from leaving him behind, but he didn’t! He took him in, literally gave him all the food he could to make sure he’s okay, and raised him as his son. It’s so wholesome in their own little way.

Their past really is the embodiment of that one B99 meme where Rosa got a golden retriever and says something along the lines of ‘never letting anything happen to it’ to me.
