i know why people quickly discard it and pretend it doesn’t exist and i completely understand and empathise with that standpoint however i do think it’s interesting to take spottedleaf’s heart into account when thinking about spottedleaf, because it colors a lot of her otherwise very generic ‘medicine cat love interest’ traits. if i was writing her i think what i would do is leave the whole thistleclaw thing intact HOWEVER very evidently paint spottedleaf as a ca victim, and i think an interesting twist on her feelings for fireheart would be to not actually actualise it as affection but rather some pocd-like intrusive thoughts that she struggles with as a result of trauma. moreover i think her becoming a medicine cat could be framed in an interesting way if she specifically sought out the position to have an ‘excuse’ to reject thistleclaw as a mate that is valid and infallible in the eyes of the clans.(1) and i think it leads to her taking the virginial chastity rules of the med cat code (which is how i’d personally frame them, btw) very seriously, which then extends into her having an overall reliance on starclan, explaining why she’s so willing to be their main messenger pigeon for like the span of 3 entire arcs. basically i think she’s very repressed and 100% prefers to be so. with age she’s become very scared of ‘repeating the cycle’ of her abuse to a nearly obsessive degree and so she’s shut herself off from romance and love and all similar things.(2)(3)

1. i know some people like to portray the clans as very just and socially aware but my enjoyment of warrior cats comes from the same place i get my enjoyment of shakespeare plays where nearly everyone is a terrible person as commentary on greater institutions and other facets of life. and so i think it makes sense if, even if thunderclan knew about thistleclaw being predatory, most people would waive it in favour of him being a good warrior. and since starclan is simply dead clan cats they inherit the sins of the living — i don’t think thistleclaw ever faces repentance for this and i think it’s another nail in the coffin for spottedleaf and how she thinks of herself. and i posit this as commentary on how men can get away with terrible things if they carry enough charisma or are privileged enough in society, alongside conveying the way repression often makes trauma seem surreal or exaggerated, but also its meta-commentary on the way the erins wrote this book wherein the only reason thistleclaw is portrayed as evil is because he trains in cat hell. i think, in the universe im relaying, this would be starclan’s logic for why he’s in the dark forest. forget him taking advantage of a child, he was just a little bit too jingoistic compared to the rest of us, which is what is unforgivable!

3. consult the post i made beforehand where i described her as an inversion of leafpool. their stances on faith and love form a sort of helix that unites only when leafpool is an apprentice and spottedleaf is her lovely starclan mentor. as soon as leafpool rejects the chastity that spottedleaf has based her whole understanding of religion (the safest place she has) on, spottedleaf believes she is betraying starclan as a whole, and partially that she’s betraying spottedleaf herself. in my ideal world spottedleaf is behind the ‘squirrelflight is barren’ lie and that entire po3 adoption situation is the breakage point for the two leafgirls
