“Hmm, ok.” Well that was kinda sneaky then, huh? Oh well- she’d cross that bridge when they got there then. “Just stick close by, ok? And then before she’s packed up, hop in her bag. She doesn’t keep much in there, so she wont check besides making sure I’m not left behind. Then it’s just a short little trip to car, and we’re home before you know it.”
“Alright.” Lily nodded, before hearing a cacophony of shrill voices coming towards the room. “Guess the younger beans are coming back from recess.” She carefully made her way towards the bag. “It’ll be a few hours before pick-up, but I’d rather not risk getting caught up in the stampede…”
Mint glanced back towards the sound of kids nearing. Break time was winding up. “That is fine with me. We’ll be all ready to go if you’re already here anyways.” Mint agreed, making her way to the bag as well. She pocketed her little paring knife away in a safe pocket, to make sure neither of them got hurt by it, and then quickly tugged the apple into a less obvious spot. As the two of them got settled, kids and adults both began trickling into the building.
“Oops, that’s where I left my apple-” A voice commented, before a hand gently lifted the bag and sat it carefully onto the floor. Out of sight, out of mind, and unable to be knocked over. Surely this must have been Neo.

Mint made a face. Ow?? “A memento? Tigerlily, you eat the fleshy part first then the skin. The skin has more nutrients, yes, but it also gets sticky if you try to go skin first and it’s tough. Have you…never eaten an apple before?” She felt bad she lost her tooth on that, but yikes-
“…no, I haven’t. I mostly just go after snacks the big people leave behind and the M candies. I never thought about having an ‘apull’ or any other one of the helper’s food items before.” The only reason Lily wasn’t a ball of pudge was a) her childlike metabolism, and b) she did a lot of climbing. She pocketed her tooth and turned the apple around to eat the soft part.
“There are all kinds of fruits out there. Some sweet, some that are sour, vegetables too– though those are definite harder to eat and tear into. I used to live somewhere with a forest of fruits.” A garden no doubt. “I think they were thinking of teaching the smaller beans how to plant them one day…” she trailed off. “Maybe I can get the caretaker to pack blueberries for lunch tomorrow. Definitely softer.”
Wait, was she already thinking about what they’d do together the next day? Ack, they’d barely even met. She quickly through in, “If you’d like to try them I mean. No guarantees.”
“I mean, wouldn’t be against it…” Lily said, already making plans to find a fresh set of clothes to meet up with Mint with. “It’d be nice to get some variety in my diet.” Yeah, other than fruit snacks and snuck-in Twizzler bits.
She gave a small nod as she continued with her snack, “Then I shall ask. I sure it would be.” Mint wiped her knife on the napkin that held the apple. It seemed she was done for now. “So what’s it like over there on the other side there anyway? I don’t like going that far.”
“It’s really cool! I have this house I live in, and when the bigger kids are away, I throw movie nights!” Lily neglected to mention that she spends most of the movie nights watching the same movies that the caretaker puts on for all the kids that morning- and she’s already seen them dozens of times. “What about you? I mean, I haven’t been over here in a while, so I’d love to hear how you live.”
“Movie nights??” You mean she actually had the energy and patience to learn how to work that machine? Mint could never- She didn’t even think where Lily’d get other movies, at least not right now, color her impressed!
“That sounds like a lot of fun actually. As for me, I commute back and forth between here and the head caretaker’s home. When I am here, I just kind of hang out. I enjoy the change of scenery, and watching the helpers and little beans. Sometimes I’ll sneak something discarded home. When I’m not here, I also have a house to myself, and though I don’t have movie nights a lot, I’m safe, and have food, and sometimes Neo even makes me clothes.” Neo, that was the name of the head of the daycare it seemed.
Lily nodded before looking down at her own clothes- threadbare, badly stitched, no footwear (not that she cared about the last part, but it would make the colder nights more bearable)… “…I might be crazy for asking this, but… can I head home with you tonight? It’s… actually pretty lonely being here at night…”
Mint tilted her head. Wait, she wanted to go home with her? She took a moment to think, looking down. Neo should be ok with that, right? Was this safe? She thought of that book the little beans read before, ‘If you Give a Mouse a Cookie’. She glanced back up; Lily was just one extra smol... they did have room.
“Well, I don’t mind it. I’m sure it’ll be ok, but weren’t you busy playing doll? You’re ok with Neo knowing you’re here?” Mint asked.

Ah, daycare. A wonderful experience for many children whose parents need some down time. Youngsters make friends, experience new things, and hone their interpersonal skills.
Currently, it’s time to play on the playground, so all the children are outside, leaving the playroom empty. Well, almost empty.
“Almost… there…”
A young girl, older than the children in daycare but much smaller, climbed her way up onto the desk of the caretaker. She flopped onto the cool wood, catching her breath. This was Tigerlily Tulasi- Lily to friends (if she had any)- and she was a Borrower. And she was on a mission- to get as many of the M&Ms in the treat bowl as possible. Nothing would stand in her way.
The caretaker was away, but their bag was very much so still sitting on the desk. It was lying on it’s side, and an apple could be seen next to it sitting on a napkin, if one looked close enough.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away, right? But it also keeps pesky Borrowers away too, well ones that weren’t Mint at least. Another small girl poked her head around the sizeable fruit before stepping out from behind it, a paring knife in her hand almost like a sword.
“Who’s there?” she asked, brandishing her tool and eyeing the girl with a low lidded gaze.
“MEEP!” Tigerlily immediately went limp, falling onto her side. It took a few seconds for her to realize who had spoken. “Waaait… you’re not a human!” Lily sat up and glared at the newcomer. “Give me a heart attack, why don’tcha!” She got to her feet and approached the older borrower, not perturbed by the knife. “Haven’t seen you around here before- what’s your name?” Lily then noticed the tail behind the stranger. “And how come you have a tail?”
Mint gave a few slow blinks, the little girl had practically just turned into a ragdoll for a moment. Guess playing dead is one way to blend in. As the girl came closer, she kept her knife pointed, but inched it back just a little. She didn’t actually want to poke the girl if she didn’t have to, but-
“I could as the same, I’m here pretty often and I’ve never seen you...” she glared back, only for her face to flush a bit. Lily, you can’t just ask why people have tails. It curled up, out of sight, and out of the way. “Why are you blonde? I’m Mint.”
“And I’m Tigerlily. I usually stay on the toybox side of the playroom, but whenever the caretaker brings those M candies, I sneak over and nab a few.” Lily watched the tail curl away, and a pang of envy went through her mind. It’d be a lot easier to free climb if she had a tail… “Anyway, you aren’t gonna try and bust me, are you? You were in the caretaker’s bag, after all…”
Tigerlily, huh? Her eyes wandered toward the bowl of candy briefly then back to Lily. She shrugged, putting down her “sword” arm. “No, as long as you’re good. I stay with them, and they know about me, so for all I know they already know about you too.” She started making her way back to her own snack, the apple. “That’s a lot of candy for a little one like you though, don’t make yourself sick.” She gave a small smirk of a smile.
Lily stuck her tongue out at Mint. “Rude! And I keep myself a secret from all the big people! For all they know, I’m just a doll.” She looked over at the candy, then back over at Mint. “…we can share, if you want. I only take a few anyway- nothing that’ll get me noticed.” Sure- the caretaker will think that one of the kids left dirty humanoid footprints on their desk.
Suuuure. Considering the way she went limp, she may have believed that, a little bit. It made no difference to her though. “If you say so. And no, no, I’m good. I’ll stay working on my fruit.” Sure it was just about the size she was, but it was certainly a little less messy. She cut herself a small chunk of fruit and gave her a nod, “You go ahead though. You can also have some of this if you’d like.” Mint offered.
Lily thought a bit. She had grown tired of having Goldfish for dinner… “Okay, I accept. Cut me off a piece.” She approached the apple tentatively- she still was uncertain if this was a trap that the caretaker had planned to evict her. “…where’d you get a knife anyway?”
“Sure thing.” She commented idly as she got to work on cutting another piece. “I got it from the daycare’s little kitchen, long before the caretaker found me. They didn’t make me put it back.” Who would try to anyway? At least not while Mint was awake. She passed Lily her piece of apple, “Here you go.”
