🚨spoilers for the long walk movie!🚨

i feel like in the movie, they wanted so desperately for mcvries to be this shining light for garraty that they managed to completely rob him of almost all of his depth from the book. they completely change his backstory to be one where he is the sympathetic figure, they cut out his moments of weakness and madness and anger on the walk, and they censor all of his moments of ruthlessness.

a conversation that garraty has with pearson about pete always sticks in my brain when i think of him:

we get none of this in the movie! pete says it's hard to be kind, but we don't really see him struggle with it at all. and the strangest part to me is that, in the book, he's still that light!! he's more complex and messy but that makes him all the more beautiful to ray. he still moves forward towards and in honor of pete, but it feels like the film doesn't trust the audience to sympathize with an imperfect character and i'm slightly disappointed in that.
