Some art-related asks! (And a disclaimer - this advice is from my experience, and if you feel the advice doesn’t resonate with you, that’s okay!)

Before I even answer anything, my two overarching tips are always these:

Practice, practice, practice! You have to practice drawing a lot and regularly to build that muscle memory - improvement won’t happen overnight, so please don’t be disappointed! Art has the weirdest learning curves. The kind of practice I recommend is studies, live or from references of real things, regardless of your artstyle (in fact, some of my favourite stylised artists have a very strong ability to draw realistically, and they use that knowledge to supplement their styles!). If you’re a digital artist, you still must also do studies on paper, no matter how much you hate it. You need practice without the experience of being able to mirror, liquify or ctrl +z. Even if you feel the attempts are rubbish, keep doing them!

Immerse yourself in art - so surround yourself with your favourite artists on any socials you use. Make a regular habit of watching speedpaints, process videos, tutorials, and those “fixing your art” videos. Even when you’re not drawing, you’ll be surrounded by art. It’ll help you learn to spot what’s missing in your own works - is it contrast? Form? Colour selection? Have you misunderstood the lighting? You develop your own inner critic that allows you to view your own art from a technical viewpoint

Now onto more specific tips:

Drawing faces:

Use the Loomis method! I won’t bother explaining it as thousands of artists have done a better job of this online, but that’s what I use all the time to ensure I have decent proportions

Follow the natural curves of the face, for example:

The orange curves help me orient the plane of the face. There’s also certain facts like the nose begins in line with the top of the ears, and ends at the bottom of the ear. These ‘checkpoints’ are useful when you change perspectives. The eyes sit below the top of the ear (typically). Also eye shape can tell you a lot about perspective

Naturally this is a very whistle stop tour to faces, but I hope that helps!

Drawing hands:

One thing I find helpful is nails. They’re often neglected, but they tell the viewer a lot about distance, perspective, and angles. They also help me draw the fingers. If I draw the nails ahead of time, I don’t end up with weird-length, disproportionate fingers.

Also note the shapes! Knuckles are diamond-like, and are attached to the back of the wrist by thin strips of ligaments. When the fingers are extended, they become more prominent. Also, at any joint in the fingers, the finger will be thicker. I like to exaggerate these a bit more than you typically see in real life as I find it adds a bit of character. Hence why it’s important to learn realism, then you can subtract the parts that you don’t want to suit your artstyle

Guess who’s back (I have been busy with exams and attending my sister’s graduation, but now I am somewhat more free)… and starting it all off with replying to some of the asks in my mountain of an inbox -

@little-shit-with-zero-control eventually… I have been drawing a little during term but I’ve emerged from my cod phase (but I’ll probably return back when cod mw4 is released) and have been drawing other things. I binged Hannibal post exams, so that’s what I’ll be posting this summer… I think. Even though I call myself multifandom, I’ve been a little scared of posting anything that isn’t cod on here

@thoughts-of-lex depends on what time of the year it is (call me a seasonal artist). I basically don’t draw at all during exam time, and outside of that, I doodle quite a bit on scrap paper and in notebooks. I stopped carrying proper sketchbooks a long time ago, and I just store the occasional scraps that I think look decent enough in a folder

I don’t, actually - I haven’t found anything that immediately clicks, but I’ve seen plenty of variations and I’m open to pretty much anything at this point. König it is until I find something better! (Also thank you - I find the many aspects of fanon for König’s personality is incredibly varied, and I’m glad you enjoy the way I portray him!)

Oh daredevil s4 was scrumptious… Murdock is like the final boss of self hate, second only to dean winchester lol. If I had to describe s4 in one image it would be this:

I need that printed on a t shirt and I’ll wear the hell out of it lol. I haven’t actually drawn Murdock much but he is very very fun to draw, so thank you for the ask!

König asks!

Anon…. heck yeah. 100%. Chapped and broken lips all day every day, this man chews on them and licks them whenever he’s uncomfortable ‼️

I think I did something a while ago where I tried to draw expressions matching his more aggressive voice lines, etc, but something like this:

@unseaworthy ….i dunno how to break this to you, how I draw him is how I imagine him as a 39-42 y/o 😭. His in game model is super baby-faced so I draw him … somewhat young-looking and baby-faced as well. But here’s a vague age map that I drew for him:

At times I guess I draw him looking a bit more youthful but I do generally draw him as how I imagine him to be in his forties

Around 36 for Horangi and somewhere between 39-42 for König. As for their huge rank gap, it’s bc König went straight to the military at the age of 17 but Horangi went to uni first, got into gambling, got kicked out, then joined the military as an older bloke

@little-shit-with-zero-control the fanon consensus is is that he got into a nasty tiff with loan sharks… and I subscribe the same fanon canon 🤣

HI. I love your art!! Quick question: how do you think Konig would react to meeting someone taller than him?

Hi!! I don’t think he’d care much - even if he met someone taller, they’d probably only be a few cm taller at most… so hardly a noticeable difference. I don’t think he’d even notice

Genuinely I think horangi would make a bigger deal of it 🫡

do you do Krueger x Nikto...

No, not really…. I don’t really think about those two much. Nikto just goes AWOL at some point so he’s not even around, and although I do enjoy depictions of Krueger with some psychopathic traits/not-very-mentally-stable, I hc him as being a pretty normal bloke, but with genes he’ll struggle against for the rest of his life. Krueger has a family history of depression and schizophrenia which doesn’t bode well for him at all. But at the moment, he’s just a guy who’s a little bit neurotic and most probably will have to get on meds to manage his anxiety/depression after he retires

So, we already have scar stuff about König and Simon but how did Korangi get his? I assume it has something to do with his gambling addiction and how he may have had borrowed money from very shady people to feed it or probably got into a nasty fight while gambling (maybe the loser was a sore loser or smth)

What do you think about the fanfictions of König being a pure asshole ? Like kidnapper König that manipulate the reader, force himself on them, humiliate them, etc...

guys i swear i mentioned this before but i DO NOT read reader/oc/self insert 😭.

no shade on folks who enjoy that kind of writing, but it's (incredibly so) not my cup of tea. my fic taste is: elaborate political plots, anguish, lots more anguish, gut-wrenching anguish, politics again

and i have really high standards for grammar, writing style, paragraphing, etc. im genuinely a terrible person to come for fic opinions/recs because i bookmark so little ☠️
