look who goes there! is that BENEDICTO "BENNY" DEL ROSARIO? i’ve seen them often around EVERGREEN, which may be because they are a PHYSICAL THERAPIST + VETERINARIAN @ RIVER RUN STABLES. they’ve been in town for EIGHT MONTHS and i’ve known them to be TENACIOUS but also OBSTINATE. for some reason, THE MUTE by RADICAL FACE reminds me of them, as well as A SILLAGE OF FRESHLY-CUT GRASS AND LEATHER, WARMTH AND SOLACE FOUND ONLY IN AN ANIMAL’S COMPANY, A STEADYING HAND IN THE FACE OF UNCERTAINTY.

BACKGROUND:
a perpetual wip
in the philippines, the del rosario name was synonymous with horse racing for generations. benny's father, for example, was a horse trainer—one of the best in the country, really, though his ambitions laid far beyond the philippines.
at two years old, benny and his parents immigrated to the states, where his father aspired to train american racehorses. and he found success. still no triple crown race winners to this day, sure, but to have your horses achieve multiple graded stakes wins and appearances has never been a small feat either.
with all that in mind, it was hardly a surprise when benny took a shine to horses as well. he was never so interested in the front-facing jobs in the industry, however. jockeying, owning, training—none interested him. from the beginning, benny was a quiet, introspective type. some called it precocious and gentle. others said he was just shy. but one thing was certain: whenever he found himself in the winner's circle where his father was oh-so-proud to stand, benny was liable to shrink behind the nearest adult in the ensuing photograph.
and oh, how his parents would scold him.
but benny much preferred shadowing the stablehands, the farriers, the veterinarians (when they allowed him to watch, anyway), to see how what happened behind the scenes made those thoroughbreds his father trained so great. each sparked an unquenchable curiosity within him.
above all, though, he loved the horses. they didn't tell him he was being too quiet, or that he needed to put himself out there. he could just be himself. he may have (mostly) grew out of his diffidence as he got older, but his love for horses remained.
so in the lead up to high school graduation, benny's path for himself was clear: a relevant degree for veterinary medicine, then vet school. his father didn't disapprove of his decision, per se, but wondered why benny wouldn't be more concretely in the family business. but benny had learned by then that he and his father would never see eye to eye. ernesto wanted glory and recognition, while benny simply did not.
he made it through college and vet school, and hasn't really stopped propelling forward. through a confluence of circumstances, he became co-owner of the first clinic that hired him. which was great… until he became burnt out on the administration that required on top of being a veterinarian. at the advice of a mentor, he went back to school, shadowing an equine vet in colorado to become certified in sports medicine. his schooling eventually brought him to bear creek, which seemed like just the right place to slow down and reevaluate. and he's been there ever since.
