k but imagine Rocky wanting to learn about how humans became the apex predators of their planet so he has Grace “hunt” him in the biodome as an experiment and during it he thinks Grace isn’t trying or taking it seriously which is bad bad bad because this is for research purposes

only for Rocky to get more and more tired as the experiment goes on just to realize that Grace isn’t which makes him panic so he puts as much distance as he can between them and finds a (hopefully) safe spot to sleep and when he wakes up the human is crouching over him like “got youuu” and Rocky has never shrieked so damn loud before in his life

Imagine Grace defined his name as the elegance definition of grace and Rocky spends years thinking how fucking ironic this clumsy leaky space blobs name is.

Until Grace slips out a sentence along the lines of "could you give me a little grace here" and Rocky immediately points out he used a word wrong so Grace has to explain that yeah, grace means elegance but it can also mean mercy sometimes too.

And Rocky has to suddenly reconcile that the clumsy leaky blob that saved his life twice, that almost certainly doomed himself to come back for him, name is Mercy.

As a Daniel enjoyer, can I just say, the racism is the point. The ableism is the point, the bag on her head as she cried, the student used aggressively, the estranged daughters. This is a boomer monster. Remember how he lectured Lestat's head on having carved out a path for himself? That's boomer talk. You dislike him by design, because he is a bad person and I'd never seen a so thoroughly boomer evil on tv, it's very interesting and timely, you just gotta understand that it's not a blind spot in the writing, it's intentional. Just like it's intentional that Armand torture Louis, and the shockingly evil ugliness of that. The ugliness of incest, of murder, nothing is sanitized.

They're wealthy predators, the discomfort is the point.

I got my Merlin box set today! Very excited.

Since it's a new year, I want to start a proper weekly rewatch, not fast forward or skip anything. Maybe write down some new thoughts. If I post anything it will be collected in this post.

Merlin rewatch -- S4E13: The Sword in the Stone 2

I have such complicated feelings towards the Sword in the Stone scene.

I like the concept that Merlin creates the whole myth, just so that Arthur can regain confidence in his kingship. I love the implication of how story/legend is created, and the power of it. In universe, Merlin becomes the “higher power” that choose the rightful king for the land. It’s fascinating. It shows the length Merlin can go for Arthur, and the power Merlin has over Arthur's destiny.

On the other hand, because of the whole simpleton fiasco, the manipulation of Arthur from Merlin is more and more glaring. It’s not something I want to see in their relationship, when there are enough inevitable lies as it is. It feels like Merlin sees Arthur less and less as a friend, more as his mean to achieve the golden age.

Also, this is a bit of a personal preference, but I’d really like to have any implication that Arthur actually has something special in him, that he is "chosen" by something, Albion, the Old Religion, whatever, not just Merlin. We have no idea if the prophecy actually pointed to Arthur, or if Kilgharrah made that interpretation.

Aside from that, this scene is so gorgeous. Beautiful gold, green and red.

Arthur's soft, resigned gaze... It’s insane that Arthur actually agrees to try it. The length he can go to indulge Merlin is equally astonishing as Merlin’s staging this legendary scene for him, honestly.

Arthur’s panic when he can’t pull the sword out is so painful to watch. He’s panting and trembling and doing everything he can to not run away from his people. So brave. Baby…

“Nothing, not even this stone can stand in your way.”

In Love. This line is what makes me not completely hate Merlin in this scene. Powerful! The underlining “I’ll destroy everything that stands in your way.” Is palpable. Gorgeous. I do love the excessive loyalty.

“Long live the king!!”

Arthur is all golden and kingly<33 Merlin tears up a little for his accomplishment (and seeing his king’s awesome show down). (would be perfect if Arthur actually pulls it out by himself)
