Recent studies reveal an important role of non-coding circular #RNA (circRNA) in the control of cellular processes. Because of differences in the organization of plant and mammal genomes, the sensitivity and accuracy of circRNA prediction programs using algorithms developed for animals and humans perform poorly for plants. Decellularization is the name for a tissue engineering technique which is designed to strip the cells from a donor organ, thus leaving nothing but connective tissue that once held the cells in place. It’s referred to as a “ghost organ” for it’s pale appearance. It can then be reseeded with the patient’s cells. The goal is to render an organ that can be transplanted into a patient without of the tissue being rejected.
Question: What is bioremediation and what is it used for?
Answer: Bioremediation is the use of microorganisms, usually bacteria, to clean up polluted environment such as oil spill sites or contaminated soils. [1] It is used to purify industrial waste water, filter drinking water, and detoxify solid wastes for soil and land treatment. For example, sulfur reducing bacteria can be used to remove wastes containing sulfur from water before discharging them into a river or an ocean. [2] Bioremediation stimulates the growth of certain microbes that use contaminants as a source of food and energy. It also stimulates the microorganisms to release enzymes that degrade the contaminants into small harmless molecules, water, and gases like carbon dioxide and ethene. [3] For effective bioremediation, the microbes should be provided with enough food at the right temperature and pH. Also, if soil or groundwater do not have enough of the right microorganisms, they should be added for more effective bioremediation. This process is called “bioaugmentation”. Thus, only certain conditions allow the right microbes to grow and multiply. Otherwise the microbes will eventually die, and the contaminants will not be detoxified. Amendments can be made to improve the condition. For example, oxygen can be provided for aerobic bacteria, and more of the bacteria can be added. Bioremediation involves aerobic or anaerobic microorganisms. Thus, different environments are needed for different microbes to successfully reduce pollution.
