Heyyyy we're back at the gates of Eulmore! Remember waaaay back when we first visited and I said Eulmore was fucked? Yeah uh... We're walking the path from Wright to Gatetown and there's people along the road that weren't there before and they're all not in their right minds. Why?
Oh, right. Meol. I distinctly remember feeling my iron stomach start to falter when I saw this particular reveal for the first time. I hate it so much. So, so very much. Vauthry willingly fed sin eater to people and now he has some measure of mind control over all of them because it corrupted their aether *just* enough.
As if we didn't have enough reasons to go stab him like Ehud did to Eglon. The writers really did a good job of taking a potentially sympathetic villain and turning him into the most vile abomination you'd ever see, and all in the name of control!
You know, up until the showdown leading into Nabaath Areng, I didn't put much thought into Ran'jit other than "big spooky strong bad guy". But uh... there's some serious contrast to be found between him and Thancred. Both style themselves as father figures to Minfilia. Both also have a white and black color scheme. But the similarities end there.
Ran'jit has known Minfilia as the Oracle for far longer than Thancred has, and views his role to be a protector as the only way to express how he cares for her. He's trained her over and over again, and now thinks he knows that the best thing for her is for her to never fight again, against her wishes. He commands her to do things, not asks, and very much doesn't let her think for herself.
Thancred has known the original Minfila since she was very young. He's watched her grow up, become her own person, and has drawn on that experience to inform how he fulfills the father figure role here. He protects, yes, but he also guides - he knows when he needs to step out of her way and let her find her own path, and how to let her think for herself and make her own mistakes.
It is this that drives the conflict between the two men, and what allows Thancred to dig deep enough to win it.
Adding to this, once we reach the final showdown with Ran'jit in Eulmore? He's completely abandoned the white/black color scheme in favor of his red dragon guise that we've seen him transform into while fighting him. He concedes the fight with Thancred and symbolically gives up all claim to Ryne's guardianship.
I love it so much.
If history must be unwritten, let it be unwritten. Become what you must.
HEARTBREAKING: character actually mildly interesting to think about but I Dont like their fans
in the ShB role quests, we watch each of Ardbert's party members make some sort of personal sacrifice, forced to discard their own goals, for the sake of the greater good. The moment they make that choice is when a Crystal of Light appears, officially marking them as Warriors of Light in recognition of their heroism and sacrifice. "By your sacrifice, a warrior made.", as the Shadowkeeper says in battle.
The same lore doesn't hold true for the WoL, back when they were in crystal-collecting mode in ARR and HW, the crystals just appear after major victories without the need for some sort of momentous sacrifice, and seem to serve mostly as a marker of how much story progress you've made/need to make to the end of the expac.
But if you think about it not lore-wise, but symbolically -
With each victory over a Primal, you're ensuring that you'll be the person who'll be called upon for help when next a Primal appears. You're cementing your own role as hero each time.
And each time, you are making personal sacrifices.
You might not even realize it until much later, what you have offered up, bit by bit - your freedom, your peace of mind, your own goals and desires, for the sake of the greater good of the star.
"By your sacrifice, a warrior made."
That feeling when your primary motivation for getting a particular class to level 60 is because you want the dress given as the quest reward, because your character needs it. Suvia wears this dress just as well as I'd hoped. I really do like astro most of all the healing classes, but this definitely motivated me to do it again on Suvia.

I am ready to embrace the change, but I do have 1 quarrel...
GIVE US PROPER FRECKLES FOR GOODNESS SAKES.

Suppose I should try to be a little active here again.
If Twitter gets any worse than it's already crappy state, I need somewhere to jump ship.
