Georges Méliès | The Provocateur

In the very nascence of film-making, Méliès was an illusionist-turned-filmmaker who recognized the contributions that manipulating audience perceptions could have on moving pictures. Méliès’s shop in the Montparnasse Métro stop: Confiserie et Jouets (confectionery & toys) Méliès’ first wife of 28 years, Eugénie, died in 1913, the same year in which his studio and its assets passed into the hands of his creditors, and he spent the next twelve years trying to make ends meet by writing skits and songs, designing sets, and performing as both actor and singer in traveling troupes that also featured his daugher Georgette and son André. Two years after financial conditions forced the family to break up, Méliès married his longtime mistress Jehanne d’Alcy , who had previously purchased a small store in the Gare Montparnasse, where Méliès tended shop for the next seven years As one can see, the Gare Montparnasse shop in about 1927, indicates that, contrary to the premise of Hugo, Méliès did not reject all reminders of his days as a filmmaker: he appears to be touching up a photo of the famous Man in the Moon shot from Le Voyage Dans la Lune.
