Over two sweeps have passed in a doomed timeline where the Alternian SGRUB players responded to losing the game by hacking their way out of the Medium and onto a restored Alternia. Now on the cusp of adulthood, they face conscription into the Alternian Navy. Gamzee Makara is shocked to find himself under the personal guidance and questionable protection of his ancestor, the Grand Highblood, as he trains alongside other young trolls of his own caste. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the galaxy, revolution brews.
Miracle Child originated on the Homestuck Kink Meme. The fic is now hosted and exclusively updated on Archive of Our Own.
Please be aware that Miracle Child is rated Mature and contains scenes of graphic violence, physical and emotional abuse, and gore, as well as frequent use of profanity and strong themes of drug abuse and addiction.
This blog features update announcements, as well as art (both by the author and by the fic's incredibly talented fans; you guys are great!) and worldbuilding errata. Questions for characters or for the author are gladly accepted via the ask box. If you'd like to hang out and discuss the fic with other readers, we now have a Discord server.
Miracle Child's update schedule is currently unpredictable; thank you for your patience. The ask box is currently open.
Miracle Child Chapter 64: Where You Are and If You're Safe
Wildvine sighs, and comes and crouches down next to him.
“It’s time an’ past to be gone home, Little Capricorn,” she says gently. “You’ll feel better for havin’ slept.”
“Don’t fucking patronize me. Get enough of that shit off of the big guy,” Gamzee mumbles. “I ain’t a wiggler.”
Hey folks! A short chapter, as I get back in the saddle.
I know the update schedule is whack, but I'm just wondering if you're alright? As in, not dead, haha. Hope the rest of your 2024 goes smoothly.
Haha, yeah. I want to assure everyone that I have not put the fic down for good, but it's been a while since I've made real progress on writing, so it might be a while yet before there's another update.
If you'd like to keep up with me elsewhere on tumblr, my personal is @bramblepatch.
Miracle Child on AO3: Chapter 63: All Up And Here Now
Of the many reasons he has for wanting to get away from here, the prospect of just having time to sit and talk and not worry about chatrooms that need supervision or fatigued channel hosts sure is one of them. The prospect of being able to talk in person, to curl up next to Karkat and hear his voice -
He realizes, suddenly, that the conversation has moved on without him.
Is there a trick to writing realistic gamzee dialogue? He's really hard to write because his speech patterns are really weird.
It's a little hard to put into words.
There are a few specific idiosyncrasies - "but (explanation or elaboration on previous statement), though," extremely casual use of profanity in general and "motherfucker" in particular, his tendency to use incongruous prepositions, the way he constructs nicknames. On a broader level though...
Ok, really, the thing is that a: most of what comes out of Gamzee's mouth is free verse and b: Gamzee is a just terrible poet. The way it sounds is important; he likes to hear himself talk, less in a "full of himself" way and more on a "making the words go is soothing to him" level. Most of the time he knows what he's trying to say and he gets there eventually, but it's very stream of consciousness and he's easily distracted.
I don't object to the question on principle but I do object to you going behind Equius's back to ask me things he already told you he doesn't feel comfortable with you knowing!
What's the status of the Hiveswap trolls? I assume most of them have lost all color and become just dudes in the Fleet. Are the events of Hiveswap canon? Are there still some remnants of Dammek's rebellion?
unquirked transcript:
I'm not sure what "the events of Hiveswap" is supposed to mean, but Bramble seems to think you're talking about trolls approximately my age from the Outglut area?
If that's what you're asking then you've seen a bit of me and Chahut Maenad, and I assume you'll hear more from Daraya Jonjet eventually since she's our liason to the new Virgo girl.
Other than that I'm not sure who you're likely to hear from.
Some of us are still around.
Some are very dead.
There's a few who have fallen off the grid.
Stelsa is fine but if you hear from her that probably would mean that something has gone very wrong.
There's stuff about my work that she's happier not knowing, and we worked that out sweeps ago.
Did you get Tavros's adult name (Windskim) from panel 82 of Homestuck? (The one with the monologue for John, that is.)
I got Tavros' adult name by falling down a the-crossword-solver.com hole until I went crosseyed, much as I do most of the names of adult characters in the fic.
Is Sephar's name descended from Zephyr, Cypher, or some other word?
Sephar's name is derived from astrologer Walter Gorn Old, who published under the name Sepharial, and who in 1918 proposed the existence of Lilith, a second, smaller and darker colored moon of Earth. Her symbol is the astrological symbol for Lilith, which doesn't exist as an astronomical body but for modern astrological purposes is sometimes defined as a point in space relative to the actual moon's apogee.
Miracle Child on AO3: Chapter 61: One Would Almost Think You Missed Me
“Oh. A’ course. It’s nothing big, just lying to the Grand Highblood’s fuckin’ face, is that it?” Eridan drawls.
Gamzee shrugs. "Look, bro, after a bit a motherfucker gets used to lying to his Levity," he says.
"...there is a reason Sef thinks you're completely outta your mind, you know."
Miracle Child on AO3: Chapter 60: Not Entirely Untrue
“Is he always this hard to get in touch with?” Lazapi asks.
“Last couple of sweeps, yeah,” confirms Gamzee.
“When we were little, he was downright clingy,” Terezi puts in. “But… shit happened, and he decided that no one liked him anymore, and he kind of disappeared.”
Let's make some arrangements to talk to some people! Next time: talking to some people.
Hey Equius, I notice that both you and Horuss wear dark goggles. Do you have photosensitivity issues? If so, is that a trait of Sagittarii or the blue caste in general?
Unquirked transcript:
I am no more photosensitive than most non-jade trolls are. I simply dislike direct eye contact.
Bramble, what are the origins of the fantroll names? I know oddity>Auditi, but what goes for the rest of them?
Anon ol' buddy ol' pal, I have long since lost track of how many fantrolls are in this thing. I am not going to attempt to list the name derivations of the entire cast.
If there's anyone in particular you're curious about feel free to ask, I can probably remember most of them if prompted.
To Sephar - how does your kind abstractus work? 'Missilekind' sounds like you're just throwing cylinder-shaped bombs at people. I assume you have a rocket launcher?
Unquirked transcript:
You assume correctly.
I've also gotten it to accept a beanbag launcher, for less-lethal applications. Because explosive ordinance doesn't mix with pressurized vessels, and it's good to have options.
To Lydain - how do you fight with scythekind? I assume you'd face the enemy's side and drive the pointy end through their heart, or maybe hook the cutting edge around the neck and pull back?
Unquirked transcript:
I'm just going to ask Bramble to append some pictures of war scythes to my reply, here.
You might notice that the orientation of the blade is rather different from what you're assuming.
I mean, the kind abstratus would take the agricultural implement, too, but I prefer something that's meant to be a weapon.
(Image desc: a line drawing of various pole arms with labels in Polish. Several of the weapons near the top of the page have long, curved blades affixed standing straight out from the handle, rather than at a right angle the way an agricultural scythe is. Some appear to show how the blade was reshaped to allow for this alternate placement.)
