The sketch for this one was one of the first things I drew when I started watching Miraculous Ladybug. Now I’ve finally coloured it! ^u^
The Open Line - Chapter 19, Confined/Trapped
Read Chapter 1 Read Chapter 18
Adrien woke to a blaring siren in his ear and fell of his bed in a tangle of panic and blankets. It was just an akuma alert, he told himself, rubbing his hands over his face to wake himself up. A corner of the phone had left an indent in his cheek (because he may or may not have fallen asleep looking at pictures of Ladybug).
Reaching over to dismiss the alert, he took in only the most important bits of information. It was almost 7 a.m., Ladybug hadn’t texted him today, school was delayed, because a purple monster with cannons for hands was rampaging in front of College Francoise Dupont.
He’d get to see Ladybug again already?! This was great! She almost kissed him last night! What if today was the day?!
He took the time to throw on clean clothes (just in case she asked him to reveal himself – he didn’t want her to see the amazing Ladybug jammies he was wearing!), brush his teeth (because what if today was the day?!), and then text that he was on his way. He tacked a kissing emoji onto the end, before thinking better of it. That might come across as too desperate. And just because he was desperate didn’t mean she should know that!
The route to the school was so ingrained that Cat Noir let his mind wander as he made his way to to the fight. Last night, Ladybug’s lips had gotten so close to his that he could convince himself that they’d almost touched. She had almost kissed him two nights in a row! Focusing on the disappointment and frustration of that “almost” was tempting. He was so close, and he didn’t know how to overcome what might be his last hurtle. Instead, he chose to look at the positive. Ladybug saw him as a possibility, someone she wanted to kiss, even if she wouldn’t let herself yet. That was more than he would have ever thought possible until two nights ago.
Wind whipped across his face as he sliced through he air, pushing himself toward the school. What might have happened had she stayed? His imagination had been running wild ever since she’d left last night. Visions of whispered confessions, tender caresses, and kissing in the rain were extra fuel for his muscles, driving him toward the fight, toward seeing his Lady again.
When he got to the school, everything was deserted, but it was obvious why. The building and the street had dozens holes punched through them, two feet in diameter each. Shards of glass and chunks of asphalt littered the ground. That wasn’t good. With a quick look toward the Dupain-Cheng bakery (he breathed a sigh of relief to see his friend’s home undamaged), Cat Noir followed the trail of broken pavement.
It was easy to follow. Cars and people picked their way around the potholes as best they could, on their way to work despite the danger. Without any immediate threat, his mind automatically wandered back to Ladybug again. It was amazing that she’d spent so much time with him when all he’d done was ask. What if asking worked again? What if he asked her out on a date? Or if he could kiss her, or share his identity, or be her boyfriend, or call instead of just text?
No, those were too much. She didn’t need to know how needy he really was. She wouldn’t like that. He’d just ask for an official date. That was it.

Chat Blanc and the Butterfly Effect
In the subtitles on the version I watched, Chat said something along the lines of “even the smallest butterfly can cause a cataclysm” AND I WAS SHOOK because I don’t know how “accurate” to the actual script the translation was but OMG this whole episode was like the butterfly effect because of Marinette’s decision PLUS you know, Hawkmoth uses butterflies for his akumas and all of the symbolism sort of floored me for a bit. And it makes me wonder too if something from this episode will cause a butterfly effect later on in the series.
Thought I might share some fan art of how the garbage father Gabriel Agreste’s behavior made us feel in this episode :-)

Saw the Chat Banc trailer (and first of all, oh my gosh ??!!!??!) and started out fully intending to sketch him, but ended up sketching our girl Marinette instead 💁🏽🐞

OKAY BUT CHAT BLANC CAN ACTUALLY SET UP THE SEASON FINALE SO WELL
What if. WHAT. IF. Chat Blanc is Marinette figuring out who Chat is and then she starts to reconcile with that and mentally starts to take him off the pedestal. Like obviously her feelings don’t go away overnight but she’s starting to see him as a human and THEN. Felix comes along and starts to unpack the baggage that Adrien has and parallels Kagami’s life and somehow Marinette is slightly privy to all of this because she has a budding friendship with Adrien. AND THAT’S WHY SHE MAKES THE DECISION SHE DOES TO LET ADRIEN AND KAGAMI BE TOGETHER BECAUSE SHE FEELS LIKE THEY NEED EACH OTHER AND ARE GOOD FOR EACH OTHER
AND THAT’S HOW SHE STARTS TO MOVE FORWARD AND GROW. And that’s also how Adrien starts to grow because he starts to move forward with Kagami and she helps him come to terms with stuff that only she could really relate to and ALL THE WHILE Mari and Adrien are establishing they’re friendship and LB and CN are working together better as partners
AND THEN THE LOVE SQUARE WILL BE DEVELOPING NICELY AND THEN THE REVEAL CAN HAPPEN AND BAM OUR CHILDREN ARE REUNITED, WHOLE AND FULLY THEMSELVES.
Also, side note, what if Felix starts to unpack all the pent up emotional baggage that comes along with HIS FREAKING MESSED UP FAMILY. HIS DAD IS HIDING HIS COMATOSE WIFE’S BODY IN THE BASEMENT THAT IS ALSO A GREENHOUSE AND BUTTERFLY BREEDING GROUND. AND HAS A SECRET LAIR UP IN THE ATTIC??? Adrien has a lot of baggage to work through too, even if he’s not aware of half of it yet.
Why Adrigami and Lukanette Won’t Last
Before I start, I want to say that I have nothing against either ship. I actually think Lukanette is quite adorable and there are some cute things about Adrigami. However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that some of their scenes just feel… well, wrong to the average viewer. They leave you with a feeling that tells you that things feel off. Which is the point. But let’s start off with Adrigami. Kagami says it best herself, they’re so similar. While it’s important to have similarities with the person you’re in a relationship with, there’s also such thing as too many or the wrong kind of similarities. They both grew up in a rich family with high expectations, strict rules, and being deprived of friendship and socialization outside of the select few individuals their parents allowed. Adrien has already shown that he would love to be just like everybody else without all his family’s riches and rules. He’d be perfectly happy and in a lot of ways, he puts himself at the average persons level to achieve that, despite being extremely famous and rich. Kagami, while she hates some of her restrictions, still holds herself to be above most others and looks down on some things. Kagami still believes in having a sort of structure to her life, having more exquisite tastes, being more judgemental of people. She still wants to belong to the lifestyle she’s grown up with. She thinks that this is what Adrien wants as well, the same life with a bit more freedom. She also has the tendency to want to control Adrien to an extent and have him go along with her just because she wants it. Kagami is the type that believes that she should get something because she wants it and puts in the effort, while Adrien’s the kind of guy that will likely go along with anything someone he’s friends with or cares about wants, even if it’s not something he’s the most pleased with, unless it’s mean and would hurt someone. This isn’t a recipe for a balanced relationship, but a one-sided one where both end up unhappy in the long run. While they grew up very similarly and have a similar view of the world, they handle it entirely different. They’re both very rash. Whenever they think their decision is the right one or there’s something they really want to do, they don’t think it through, they just act. It’s proven to be very bad in some situations for the both of them. Two people in a relationship that make rash decisions without thinking it over or discussing situations or problems with one another won’t last long.
They’re both selfish. Adrien has shown as both Adrien and Chat Noir that he can be quite selfish. But this selfishness is usually something that’s pretty harmless, apart from the way it makes Ladybug feel bad when he’s upset that his affection isn’t returned. While I appreciate Kagami caring about how Marinette would feel about her and Adrien, she won’t even take the time to really consider what’s going on between him and Marinette and how it would affect not just Marinette, but Adrien too. Especially since as far as we know (since we have yet to get Chat Blanc and Felix at this point) Kagami may still think Adrien and Marinette like each other, but since neither will say anything, it’s perfect time to move in. I think Kagami is a good person, though with a lot of flaws. She’s starting to venture out of her sheltered life. The thing is, she doesn’t know what direction she’s going to go. She has just met someone that’s lived a similar life as her and thinks that that means that they’re meant for each other, and that she can try to get him to change things about him that make him, well, him to suit her better. Right now, Adrien seems to be settling for her as he’s drawn in by her interest in him and the fact that Ladybug keeps making it clear she loves someone else and can’t love him (can’t, not don’t. Very important distinction) and Marinette appears to him to be interested in Luka. Settling for someone never works out in the long run. Now to Lukanette. It’s not hard to guess what was going through Marinette’s mind the first time she saw Luka. A blushing mess and stuttering like crazy. She thought he was cute (as does Chloe *cough*) and he made an effort to show her that he was okay with her flustered mess and also showed interest in her right away. Marinette at that point was already feeling down about Adrien, and he was the first one to show her that attention that she was missing. I want to point out that while Luka is super sweet, says the right things, and is rather supportive, sometimes that’s not enough. If you have, say, 2-3 people who all are kind, supportive, encouraging, good listeners, etc. But there’s that one person that makes you truly believe it. That fills you with confidence and encouragement that you’re lacking. Chat Noir managed to make her feel better about the situations going on than when Luka found her, even though she hadn’t shared every detail (and different details of the big picture) with them. Luka and Marinette are also very similar. Quiet, wanting to help others, very interested in pursuing their passion for the arts. They strike me as just being content in each other’s company at home or at a nearby park, not doing much. And content, while nice, in this context is also describing settling. A friend had put it well when she said that Luka doesn’t challenge Marinette. If she’s having a bad day, he’ll just be there to listen and play her a song to cheer her up. If she wants something, he’ll stand by while she goes after it. I feel like Luka’s a step or two below her and she goes closer to his level at her most vulnerable of times. This isn’t bad, but this is not the foundation for a happy, long-term relationship. Marinette has shown more interest in Luka than Adrien has in Kagami, but as what was said before, he showed up in her life when she was just realizing that maybe being with Adrien wasn’t possible. Kagami walked in on what was just a regular day for him. Knowing Marinette, she’s going to realize that her feelings for Adrien just aren’t going away, especially when they spend time together as friends. And we know she would feel guilty for not being able to put her all in a relationship with someone as wonderful as Luka who deserves better than that. I feel like that in itself is going to be the reason that Marinette ends things with him, if she’s the one to end it. Because sometimes it’s better to just deal with that pain alone than be in a relationship with someone that’s just going to fall in deeper the longer things go on. And of course, the reason why things won’t work out with either Adrigami and Lukanette is, to quote Fu about Marinette and Adrien, “They were made for each other.” and they truly are. We see signs of it quite often. We’re reminded how they compliment each other at times, things that we wouldn’t even think of as they’re small but very important and telling things. The parallels especially showcase this. Adrien has shown throughout the show, but much more heavily in S3, his affection for Marinette that he just doesn’t do with Kagami. If you’d like to be reminded of some of these moments, check out my gif post here that tumblr doesn’t want to show in the tags. :P Marinette also, to some, may seem happy and like she’s going to fully move on, and I know quite a few people are scared of that and think that the Love Square is dead. But someone you truly love, you just don’t fully move on. Your heart is not easily changed, and sometimes the heart just doesn’t move on at all. If you’re able to actually 100% move on, heart and all, from someone easily or because you’ve made that decision, it was never love. Or at least romantic love. While she may be with Luka, those feelings with Adrien will still remain and have an affect on her relationship with Luka. Really the most important thing to have is balance. That’s why their scenes have felt wrong, despite so many actually shipping one or both of these pairs. Marinette and Adrien/Ladybug and Chat Noir have this balance. Adrigami and Lukanette do not. If things are thrown out of balance it leads to bad things. Hopefully when both couples realize they’re not working out, things can end well for all of them and they can all remain friends before things take a turn.
Pieces of Broken Hearts

“Have you ever watched someone you like, like someone else?”
It was a question that only came from the most broken of hearts. It was also a question that wasn’t meant for Adrien Agreste’s ears, but it, nonetheless, found it’s way there anyway.
Adrien stopped his walking so suddenly that it almost caused Kagami to trip forward.
“What’s wrong?” She asked, but instead of answering her, he glanced around for Marinette. That could have only been her voice, how it sounded so sweet but so broken. It had the same tone she’d had for the past few weeks, so he recognized it almost immediately.
“Did you hear Marinette just now?”
“Marinette?” Kagami’s eyebrows raised.
“Yeah, she sounded really upset. She asked someone if-there!” He suddenly whispered, pulling Kagami toward the park.
Sure enough, Marinette was sitting on the park bench talking to...
“Luka?” Adrien whispered, looking at Kagami, “But I thought that Marinette liked Luka?”
“I thought so too.” Kagami said, averting her eyes from Adrien’s gaze. “What did she ask him?”
“If he had ever watched someone he liked, like someone else. But I thought Luka was the one Marinette liked? Why would she ask him that?”
Kagami shrugged, feeling her cheeks burn a little bit, considering she knew exactly why Marinette would ask Luka that question.
She was about to suggest that maybe they shouldn’t be listening to Marinette’s private conversation with Luka when Adrien pulled her away from their two friends sitting on the bench. Kagami felt like she could breathe again.
On the way back to Adrien’s house, Kagami had the nagging feeling that Adrien wanted to ask her a question, and sure enough right before they rounded the corner that lead to the entrance, he started:
“Kagami...has Marinette ever said anything to you about who she was talking about?”

Part III
Oh, we'll have to go Back to the way that we were Before we were us, Before I was me, Before we were happier than I've ever been Than you'll ever see, 'Cause that's the way it has to be. -The Way We Were, Carrie Hope Fletcher
Marinette:
Marinette slid to the floor of her bedroom, reeling from the words she had just read. She couldn’t quite wrap her head around the fact that a simple rectangle of paper could somehow pierce her heart as deeply as a sword. She gazed at the handwriting, unexpectedly tidy for Chat Noir’s personality. Master Fu had given it to her that morning, gently breaking the news that Chat Noir had returned his kwami, and that as of now, he was still searching for a worthy successor.
A tear slid down Marinette’s nose as she reread the letter.
“My Dearest Ladybug,
I’ve rewritten this four times now and I still can’t quite get it right. I wish I could tell this to you in person, but I know how important it is to you that our identities remain a secret, even now.
What we found out about Hawk Moth the other night has torn me in two. I wish that I could explain more, but it affects me more deeply and personally than you will ever know. Everything has become so complicated, and I feel as if I have no other choice than to do this.
We’ve ignored the possibility of a moment like this for so long, Milady. I’ve dreaded the potential complications of what a double life might throw at us. I wish from the bottom of my heart that we could throw caution to the wind and run away together to a little cottage in the countryside. But I know we can’t. I can’t.
Imagine, for a moment, a young boy who had everything. Until, in a moment, it was stolen from him. The loving mother he knew was no more, and his father who used to greet him with a hug every morning at breakfast now held him at arm’s length. This boy was left with a void in his heart, and although he smiled and tried to take courage, it never really left.
Until one day, he met you. You, with your infectious laughter. You, with the smile that could light up all of Paris. He was enamored with your kindness and compassion. Your love for everyone and your ability to see the good in people, despite their actions. It made him feel whole once again. Like there was a purpose beyond just existing.
I knew my feelings weren’t reciprocated, no matter how hard I tried, so I contented myself with your friendship and your partnership. When I’m with you, I feel most like myself, even behind a mask. You bring out the best in people, and you have made me one of luckiest human beings alive just by having your companionship, and for that, I am forever grateful.
But I can’t do this anymore. Not knowing what we know now. And for this reason, I feel as if I have no other choice but to give up my Miraculous. I’m sure there are plenty of other worthy candidates who are ready to take up my baton. In that I’m fully confident. You’ll form a new bond with them, and maybe even go farther than we ever dreamed possible with the two of us.
We’ll go back to the way that we were, Milady. Before we were us. Before I felt fully myself. And before I was happier than I’ve ever been in my entire life. Happier than you will ever know or see. I wish it didn’t have to be this way, but I’m beginning to understand now that it does.
You will always have my heart, Bugaboo. And I will always be forever yours.
-Chat Noir”
Marinette stared at the letter in disbelief. She couldn’t keep the tears from falling now. Her partner in crime. How was this happening? She had never considered the possibility that they would ever part ways. She had never actually considered what would happen to them once the villains were defeated, and never in a million years had she considered this.
She felt empty and numb. Chat was one of her closest friends. She gave him a hard time sometimes, but it was always in jest. Never before had she so terribly wished she knew his identity. She wanted to fly into his room and shake sense into him. To make him understand that she couldn’t do this without him. That he was her other half.

Part II
There's a storm coming up and I gotta prepare myself 'Cause this feeling's getting stronger everyday Something’s creeping inside Everything is about to change Gotta face the fact that I can't walk away
-Critical, Jonas Brothers
Adrien:
Adrien wasn’t entirely sure how he made it home in one piece. By the time he slipped into his room and said “Claws in,” he was shaking violently. He couldn’t think. He felt numb. His whole life felt like a lie, and honestly who could blame him?
Lie number one. Nobody knew who he was. Not even the love of his life knew. He so desperately wanted to tell Ladybug who he was. To through caution to the wind and show her who he really was under the mask. She knew him as Chat Noir, but couldn’t she know him as Adrien too? How wrong would that be? To finally be completely himself and not hide the half that still grieved his mother and craved his father’s approval and affection.
Not even Nino truly knew who he was. He was honest with his best friend, sure, but Nino truly thought that Adrien was living the high life. And Adrien found it too difficult to completely articulate that he spent half of his time leaping off the rooftops of Paris fighting bad guys of his own father’s creation (plus that would violate his trust with Ladybug, and there was no way he was going to breach that front).
Which led to lie number two. His father was not who he said he was. He didn’t want to believe it, and had refused to believe it for several hours. His heart felt like it had been cleaved clumsily into pieces. Adrien’s chest physically hurt with the ache from his grief. He thought of all the despicable things Hawk Moth had done in an effort to gain his and Ladybug’s miraculouses. He thought about all the scathing thoughts and insults about Hawk Moth he had swirling in his head before he found out his identity. And then he tried to apply them to his father.
He couldn’t though. As hard as he tried, putting the two together as the same person was proving nearly impossible. When his mother had been around, Gabriel was a different person. He laughed and sang and danced, and the Agreste mansion was filled with life and happiness. But when his mother died, his father changed. The person he had become was cold and calculated, but Adrien had never considered viewing him as cruel. He had always assumed that his father had his best intentions at heart for his son. How could the man Adrien remembered in his haze of memories possibly be the man who regularly wreaked havoc on Paris? How could that man latch onto evil so easily and manipulate it as effortlessly as a child with clay? How could that be his father?
The onslaught of thoughts and memories washed over Adrien in waves as he lay in bed. He needed to prepare himself for the inevitable storm that was coming, and face the fact that he couldn’t walk away no matter how hard he tried. Gabriel had made his choice when he evilised his first akuma, and Adrien had made his, when he defeated his first akuma. Father and son were now unwittingly pitted against each other in a battle that neither was willing to lose. The thought of having to hurt his father in any way, physically or mentally, made him feel sick.
He choked back a sob that had bubbled up to the surface.
There is was. Lie number three. That he was okay. He had told Ladybug before they parted ways that evening that he was fine. He had even winked at her. But what he said and what he felt were two entirely different matters. His heart that he had kept guarded so carefully since his mother’s passing had now been shattered into a thousand different pieces and he couldn’t fathom even trying to pick them up now. His chest felt like an elephant was sitting on it, and although he hadn’t noticed it until that moment, his eyes were wet with tears.
Could he even be Chat Noir anymore? Now that he knew the truth, could he truly put everything he had in fighting against his father? He had to though. He couldn’t let Ladybug down. She was counting on him to help her finish Hawk Moth once and for all, and throwing in the towel on Chat Noir would betray all trust between them and he couldn’t do that to her.
He laid there for what felt like hours in the dark. He couldn’t do it anymore. He was tired of lying and tired of suffering in silence and all alone. He couldn’t bring his father to ruin. He couldn’t disappoint his Lady, but it would destroy himself inside.
Oh my gosh… this is beautiful

-Better Off Without, Armon Jay
Marinette:
Marinette dropped quietly into her room, the stillness of everything contrasting wildly with the jumble of thoughts swirling through her head. Hawk Moth was Gabriel Agreste, there was no doubt about that. She and Chat Noir had seen it with their own eyes during patrol. But how could that possible? Adrien’s father had always been a bit…cold, but she never in a million years would have fathomed that he was capable of such cruelty and malevolence. Marinette was having trouble wrapping her head around it.
“Spots off Tikki,” she sighed as she sank into her desk chair. “I just don’t get it. Adrien is so kind and thoughtful and just perfect in general it just doesn’t seem possible that his father is Hawk Moth. And his mom seems like she was nice too from what I’ve heard from Adrien. I just. Don’t. Get. It.”
“There’s got to be a reason he’s doing this. I have a hard time believing that he’d wreak as much havoc as he has without a justifiable reason,” the kwami said, flitting around Marinette’s computer.
Marinette sighed, burying her face in her hands. She was having a hard enough time processing this on her own. She wondered how Chat was holding up. When they had investigated a rumor that Hawk Moth had infiltrated the Agreste mansion, they had thought it was just silly bit of gossip spread by a bored Parisian. They hadn’t expected to see Hawk Moth flit past one of the partially opened curtains in Gabriel Agreste’s office and reappear seconds later as the famed fashion designer.
At first they had chalked it up to it being a new design someone was modeling, but nobody else had entered or exited the study except for Gabriel for the four hours that they were patrolling the mansion.
Later that evening, sitting on a rooftop in the chilly Paris twilight, they tried to rationalize a logical explanation. At first Chat had been indignant. “There is absolutely no way the Gabriel could possibly be Hawk Moth,” he said emphatically at one point. “I can’t bring myself to believe it.”
“Chat, you saw exactly what I saw. We’ve tried to make heads or tails out of it, but this seems to be our only explanation. I don’t want to believe it as much as you do, but until we have concrete proof otherwise, we need to assume the worst,” Ladybug had said. “We might finally have a clue as to what we’re dealing with, and how me might finally be able to defeat him.”
But as the minutes drew on, her partner became quieter and more stoic. A hardness in his face that Marinette had not seen before set in, and it worried her. “I’m afraid, Ladybug. If what we saw is real, there’s finally a face behind the mask. I can’t imagine hurting someone, let alone knowing who they are behind their armor.”
“We don’t have to hurt him at all. We’ll find a way to defeat him. I promise,” she said, laying a hand on his shoulder.
“But…But what if we won’t be physically hurting him? What if we end up taking away everything away from him? He has a business. He has a son…” Chat trailed off, shuddering, but Ladybug couldn’t tell if it was from the night air, or from dread.
Adrien. Marinette hadn’t fully processed what this meant for him. How could she? His father was Paris’ own resident villain and he had no idea. How on earth was he meant to comprehend this? Sweet, kind, brave Adrien. The boy she loved with all of her heart, and the boy she would fight to the ends of the earth to protect. What would happen to him when he found him? Would he fall to pieces or rise above it? Who would take care of him in that big lonely mansion?
And there, lying in her bed, she made a quiet resolution that no matter what happened, she would stand by Adrien and support him. She couldn’t change what happened, but she could control how she reacted. Even if he never saw her the way she did him. Even if she would never be able to string a proper sentence together in his presence. She would be there for him no matter what.
