One of my Jack-O-Lanterns I carved from one of those foam pumpkins . Done in a negative process . So instead of the dark areas being deep they are the most shallow . Or not cut at all . The light parts that would normally be the parts that stick out are actually the deeply cut areas . So when it is lit the light coming through is brightest at the deep areas and dark where the thick skin areas block the light . Took about 6 hours to carve .

The making of Pennywise Jack 2014 by Marvin Hayes Feel Free to Share I first projected the image of Pennywise onto the pumpkin with a digital projector . Then quickly sketched out the outline and key points just so I knew where everything was going . I use fairly common simple tools like knives and scrapers . Basically a sharp knife with a curved blade and about 3 different sized scrapers . One that is about half an inch across and rounded , another that is similar but smaller about a quarter inch wide and rounded . And a 1/8th inch scraper . Cutting and scraping is pretty much it . I cut and scrape away the parts I want the lightest when it is lit . So that I'm creating a negative image . The opposite of what one would normally do to carve a sculpture . When it is lit it looks like a positive image and 3D . The lightest parts are thin as paper . The darkest areas are the skin that part is left alone . This process is very difficult . Areas where two light areas are right next to each other can end up very thin when there is a dark line between the light spots . After I get the image about half done I turn off the overhead lights . And put a light inside the pumpkin . That way I can see exactly what I need to do to finalize the image with the fine details . This is where it starts to come alive . The longer I work it the more realistic it becomes . But punking meat is very difficult to do . It tends to want to rip out and it's really messy ;-/ The structure gets weaker as I work .I push this to the limit of collapsing . It takes me from 4 to 16 hours to complete one Jack-o-Lantern . And that's just the carving itself . The longer hours are usually on the replica foam carved pumpkins . This one is a real pumpkin .
