rewatched 9 today

There is old man yaoi everywhere for those with the eyes to see (me yapping under the cut)

Aside from being the standard luther bait ship dynamic, 1 and 2 are beautiful to me for even more reasons even though at first i thought it was stupid because 2 literally dies in the first 10 minutes of the movie. i didnt really GAF about it that much because i will take love where i can find it! but thinking about it.... isnt it beautiful how 2's corpse was the first one to be used as bait? there is obviously no romantic hints towards the 2/1 ship in fact 1 literally sent 2 out to die for being "weak", but as a lover of toxic yaoi that makes it even more beautiful.

I already love characters like 1 (stubborn about and blinded by a strict worldview that they've only adopted as a form of self-defense, but which is unsustainable or even harmful in the long run) so i wasnt surprised that i liked that old man. but if you add the curious and inquisitive inventor into the mix & make him the one closest in age to the leader character....... ya i never had a chance. I am a fujo at heart

especially the inventor that dies a tragic death, the first death in the movie, the one that sets the theme of dread throughout the rest of the film. and his death was because he sacrificed himself for a stranger that he'd just met?..... contrast that with 1's character, who wouldn't take in a single person unless they conformed to his strict rule.

but being the second oldest of the group, i don't think 2 was just doing it purely out of deference to 1's authority, but out of a shared worry that his presence and curiosity would only cause the downfall of the group. i could see 2 being self-aware of the danger he brings and, instead of being exiled, forming more of an agreement with 1, that he should set out and leave.

and it could also be one of the reasons why 9 and 1 have so much conflict. 1 has said that 9 was a little too much like 2, always having to question things and know everything. 9 reminded 1 of 2, which distressed him, because 2 has always put some sort of fear/trepidation in 1's heart. but for old man yaoi purposes im also choosing to think that this similarity causes an internal conflict in 1, seeing someone else with the same unrelenting pursuit of knowledge as 2, maybe the leader sees the newcomer as the inventor's spirit coming back to haunt him-- some sort of force of nature (the concept of curiosity & advancement, the risks of both?) that he tried and failed to suppress. it could be jealousy, it could be admiration, resent, grief, regret, fear, or the stab to his pride upon being forced to acknowledge these feelings-- feelings about the way he'd sent 2 to his death, the fear of admitting he was wrong. or it could be all of the above.

tl;dr i ship 1 and 2 as tragic old man yaoi that was never realized but had definite tension. 1 being the one (lol) that sends the other out to die, and refuses to process his grief and regret, turning both emotions into spite and paranoia as a self-defense mechanism. 2 being the one that posed danger to the paranoid 1; 2, the living omen; but the one that would've died to save his life without hesitation-- and that fact haunts 1 until the point of his own self-sacrifice.

i fucking hate how “wholesome” is so often placed as directly opposite sexual content. I hate puritanism you’re not being “wholesome” you’re shaming something completely healthy. A lot of people are sexual. Let them fucking express it in their own space.

Not directly, no one’s making long posts specifically on the subject, but I often see “wholesome” specifically mean non-sexual. SFW art from a porn artist called “wholesome” art, editing porn to make it “wholesome”, etc etc. Its a linguistic shorthand that betrays an underlying bias.

Y'all remember that post from some lesbian about wanting to have sex with other women, that someone edited to be about holding hands and people were commenting about how the edit saved it from ‘horny jail’ to make it ‘wholesome’? Wholesome is an attack on anything outside the norm while trying to put on a positive face because people know that going up to the person calmly smiling and yelling that they’re an asshole marks you as a bad person regardless of context.

I still think one of the funniest experiences of my life was watching American Psycho with my sister and afterwards we both went “okay. Lets do something more lighthearted now” and put on the dubbed version of Howl’s Moving Castle and we both lost our minds when we heard Howl start talking
