Life was never easy for Katherine Acosta.
Born in New Ark, New Jersey, Kat was placed in the state's hands at five years old due to her parent's drug habit. Bouncing from foster home to foster home due to what her caregivers claimed was "abnormal behavior." The weird phenomenon, such as objects moving, breaking, or flying across the room, seemed to follow Katherine wherever she went and scared off potential parents, causing the little girl severe depression.
When she was eight, a very religious family adopted Kat. They were aware of her problems and promised the adoption agency that it would be no issue, that they wanted to help troubled children find a home. Behind closed doors, it was a much different story. Her new parents swore they would beat the demon that had possessed Katherine out of her, which eventually they did. After a year of living with the Johnson's, no more supernatural occurrences occurred around Kat, though she continued to rebel. At seventeen, she ran off with her first real boyfriend, who was a self-described Satanist. They drove cross-country, living in a beat-up Honda Civic, and when Kat turned eighteen, they married in a Los Vegas wedding chapel. Two days later, Katherine had a black eye and a busted lip when she refused his sexual advances.
Living in Nevada was even more terrifying than living with the Johnsons, and to deal with her pain, Kat began to self-medicate, eventually numbing her depression with heroin. She made her money in a strip club, though it didn't always pay for her habit, and Kat still refuses to talk about what she did to get her fix.
At twenty-five, the drugs ran out. Thin, broke, and tired of the life she was living, Kat gathered the strength to divorce her husband. With the help of a friend, the now sober Kat began the trek back to New Jersey. It was at a Truck Stop where she met an elderly woman who grabbed her hand and whispered, "There's deep pain in you, but hidden power. Go to Mirror Lake- you'll find your way." Obviously frightened, Kat ignored the woman's words, but it wasn't long until she and her friend got a flat tire, right outside of Mirror Lake.
Inside the town, Kat felt a peace that she had never felt before. More than that...she felt power. Something she buried deep inside of her began to stir. Katherine decided to stay in Mirror Lake.
Eventually, Katherine was able to get on her feet. She worked three jobs, and in that time, she discovered a love and passion for cooking. After finally saving enough money, Kat took a permanent position as the Manager of the Silver Chalice, though she dreams of opening her own restaurant one day.
Though known in the community, Kat keeps to herself. She still suspects most people, as being a victim of abuse has made her weary. She works as a solitary practitioner and refuses to get into coven politics, believing that since she never went through the Awakening, she's not a full-fledged Witch. That doesn't mean she sides with Mortals though- she believes that most people- human or witch- can't be trusted.
