I was thinking, yesterday, about that awful, slimy pond in the Hinterlands. That brown wallow, with all that perfect elfroot on the side, where it was so steep, but it looked so solid that I was sure I would be fine to grab ahold of a bush and edge myself down so I could reach- And you said ‘be careful’ at about the same time the mud gave out under my feet and then it was that sudden, cold slide into that thick water that smelled like Varric’s old boots, with me clawing at the side trying to get my balance before my head went under.. And Sera cackling like a crow when I came back up again; Her LAUGH! Of course it wasn’t her who hauled me out, dripping and sliding on the bank, fingers all slippery with filth. I felt bad about getting you dirty, too, your hands and your poor sleeves, until I made it up to the edge. I really did. Until you gave me that look, that thing you do with your smug eyebrows that makes my stomach flip.. And asked me if it was worth it. So deadpan. ‘Was it worth it, Inquisitor?’
The perfect line of mud I drew, from your forehead to the very tip of your nose, was.
At first, I really thought you were about to be angry. You got so still, and I regretted it right away- Could you tell? Is that what finally made you smile, right before you gave me that delicate shove? I think I must have screamed a little bit, when you tipped me back in. Isn’t that why Cassandra came running, looking like she was sure someone was murdering me? And she saw, what? Sera practically pissing herself, and we both know how terrifying trying to figure out what she’s laughing at can be- And you with your muddy hands and your muddy wrists, and your self-satisfied, muddy face. And then I started laughing, too, and the water got into my mouth, and do you remember the face Cassandra made, when she refused to touch me? ‘You all are having a fine time with it, I would hate to intrude.’ I was disgusting, and we both smelled so, so foul, for days, but you kept smiling.
It was absolutely worth it.
Come home.

Your archery post is awesome! Quick q: it seems like bows take forever to make with a lot of downtime. Aside from arrow-making, would the bow-makers have other jobs on the side?
Sorry for the long wait for a reply. I am travelling for work and internet in china gives me the wiggins. Bowyers were a guilded and apprenticed. They spent time making and shsping bows, but aldo cross bows, arrows and bolts. Theyd also train others or learn from their msster depending. The pace of the work would as also depend on the political termoil of the time. War would make his job in high demand.

From the Bioware forum:
Hey Keepers! We’re pleased to introduce a brand new feature with this release. We know the history of Thedas is long and intricate, but we’ve made an easy way for you to explore and learn about past Dragon Age events. This feature is known as the World Lore section. You can access the World Lore section by logging in to the Keep (log out first, if you were already logged in),opening the left-hand menu and selecting ‘World lore.’ “

Neo Scavenger anon again-the Greenwood Bow decays quite quickly in about a business week, reflecting the fact that it is not made to last. You can get a professionally made bow (made by the Anishinaabe, the local Native American tribe) OR a compound bow that somehow doesn't shatter your arrows made of trash, plus occasionally loot or buy composite arrows that weigh less, last longer, do slightly more damage, and fly farther. (1/?)
Due to engine limitations, there's only one kind of tree-pines-and all wood is freshly gathered. Crafting an arrow and a bow alike takes one Action-roughly 22 minutes-each. I'd assumed the paper fletching was made stiffer by folding it over on itself ala origami, and the Ranged skill covers all long-range combat, from thrown spears to slings to gunplay, because the dev wanted a simple skill system. (2/2)
Ymm, interesting mechanic. A few thoughts - making your own bow (sometimes called a selfbow) is totally plausible providing you have the time and materials. People do it today for fun. It obviously takes more than 22 minutes though. I doubt someone could make the bow-working process realistic while keeping it engaging. Anyone feel like making the next Facebook game? I’ve got an idea for you.
There are a lot of factors to consider with selfbows. Sloppily made bows can degrade pretty quickly, especially if you use crap wood, shape it poorly, and use a shoddy design. Again, I could wax philosophic about finding yew or maple greenwood and how I would shape the tiller, but I doubt you want that level of detail =). Realistically speaking, a well-shaped primitive selfbow made out of clean wood with good thick growth rings could out last you. It’s usability and survivability depend on the skill of the bowyer and the time available. Assuming that something handmade is inherently shite bothers me a little, but that doesn’t say anything bad about the game. If you made an end-of-game weapon at level one, that would be pretty over-powered.
Crap arrows may actually be more deadly, since they’re likely to break apart once they hit a body. The challenge would be getting the arrow to the target. Making arrows out of sticks is obnoxious. Your bum hurts, your hands hurt, you get a headache from staring down the shaft. And just once you get one straight, you have to do more. And again, the fletching. You’d need to do something to make it more durable, and your origami idea is a good one. There are a lot of videos about primitive fletching with feathers and string. You'd use a similar method for attaching the paper. This whole process takes more than 20 minutes.
If you think sideways trying to reconcile in-game time to real-world time, it’s still a fairly plausible premise. I could totally see my archery-buff grandfather trying this out just to see if he could.
And darnit, I don’t need another video game addiction. And it has archery. You are an enabler, you are.
