“She was as easy to find in that crowd as a rose among nettles. Everything was made bright by her. She was the smile that shed light on all around her.”
— Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina (via theclassicsreader)

IT SURPRISES HER HOW EASILY SHE SETTLES INTO A CONVERSATION WITH A STRANGER, but after spending her night next to the drinks table, her anxieties have begun to slowly slip away with each flute of champagne. It puts her in a nice middle ground – One that isn’t sloppy drunk, but leaves her feeling lighter and less concerned over the masked party-goers. Besides, this one seems nice enough. So far, at least. She barely catches him checking her out, her attention turned to the masked people around them – Dancing, laughing, acting as if they won’t go back to fighting one another once the Hogwarts Express pulls into the station. There’s a sigh that follows his question, her attention turning back to him. So much for small talk. There’s no point in trying to sugar coat anything – The buffer of having most of her face covered by a mask makes it easier. “I want there to be, I want to believe there will be.” She answers, shrugging a shoulder. “I have a feeling this,” she gestures around them. “Won’t do much. This feels like a farce, a reason to keep people from pushing back against the Ministry.” She speaks honestly, taking another sip of her drink. “At least there’s an open bar.”
“In honesty, I think peace is a fleeting thing,” he said, picking up a glass mug filled with amber liquid from the various other drinks laid out. “As long as there’s good then there will always be bad. We just have to be ready to fight for what we believe in.” Clearing his throat James gave her a playful grin and said, “You’re right about that though,” before lifting his mug in a mock toast, a couple drops sloshing over the rim with his movement. “To the ministry and their misguided, farce of a ball.” He announced, though he kept his voice low enough for only Lily to hear. He brought the mug to his lips and took a long drink, the alcohol burning his throat as it went down. “I think they knew no one would actually come if there wasn’t some liquor to help get everyone through this dreadful event.”
daizandhooks:
The mask her mother had chosen for this particular night was itchy and hot. The red haired badger couldn’t wait for the moment she could take it off, though she wasn’t about to be the first one to remove her mask, even if it was uncomfortable and made drinking her champagne difficult. She didn’t seen the boy coming until he bumped into her. It wasn’t hard or malicious in anyway but the contact was enough of a shock that the delicate champagne flute slipped from her hands. Embarrassed her cheeks flushed bright red, a stark contrast to the ivory and lace of her mask. “Don’t worry about it. these things happen.” A soft smile spread across her lips, the corners of her mouth turning up slightly. “Though I would not object to getting another drink. Maybe from a cup that’s less breakable, I think I have proved I can not be trusted with glass.”
James felt relieved that he hadn’t bumped into someone nasty, he didn’t particularly feel like getting into a fight at a ministry sanctioned event and with certain guests attending it wouldn’t be a surprise if he did. “Of course,” he began, returning her smile with ease. “It’s the least I can do for making you drop yours.” She had an inviting aura to her and it put James more at ease as he motioned towards the tables filled with drinks. “Is there anything in particular you would like? I could surprise you, but I must warn that my tastes are a little strong.”

THERE’S SOMETHING FAMILIAR ABOUT THE MAN IN FRONT OF HER, but she can’t put a name to a masked face given the – Well, the masked face. It didn’t help that she’d let herself give in to the open bar, either. She’s by no means drunk, but buzzed enough to speak a bit more freely, the anxiety that came with attending such an event beginning to melt away. She’s talking to someone from her house, surely. Or at least, someone she’d considered a friend. Her bright red hair made it easier for her identity to be known, but she was failing at deciphering who was who. “You may be on to something,” she nods, a light laugh follows. “Food poisoning seems like a more eventful night than this,” she gestures vaguely around them, before taking another sip of his drink. A shoulder shrugs at his question, seeing no point in lying given where this conversation is going. “Honestly? Not really. This isn’t really my… idea of a night out.” It’s an honest answer – She’d rather climb trees and look at the stars than spend an evening in an expensive dress and a masquerade mask. “But,” she begins again, “I can appreciate the Ministry making an effort to spread peace. Someone has to.”
It took James until Lily was almost finished speaking to figure out that she didn’t recognize him beneath the mask, an amused grin spreading over his lips at the realization and as she spoke he took the time to give her what he hoped was a subtle once-over. She looked beautiful tonight, not that she didn’t on any other given day; James would hazard to say she was one of the prettiest girl at Hogwarts but that might be bias speaking. “Do you think there really is a chance for peace? Sometimes I’m not so sure anymore.” He said with a glance around the room, taking in the other guests laughing and dancing before he turned his attention back to Lily. “But I suppose we should make what we can out of tonight. I’d do anything if the end result is a chance at peace.”

“Look at you, all dressed up!” Marlene bound through the crowd at the sight of him, a disturbingly cheeky grin to her lips as she approached, pushing through a small huddle of Aurors as she did. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d consider you an impostor for the real James Potter.” A lull, looking over her shoulder before pulling the flask out from her small, beaded bag. “Interested in something stronger, Potter?”
James smiled as his fellow Gryffindor neared, his attention caught by the familiarity of her voice and he chuckled at her words. “I’m tempted to agree with you, I almost hardly recognized myself when I looked in the mirror. The credit all goes to my mother, of course.” He said, a mischievous glint in his eyes as he took in the sight of the flask Marlene brought out, his eyebrows raising a fraction. “You’ve always known how to liven up a party.” He joked, holding his hand out for the flask with a wide grin.
narcissaa:
IT SEEMED NARCISSA couldn’t stop pumping into the clumsiest of people, or perhaps it was she who was the problem, then again she would never admit to it. “Are you easily marveled?” She asked without taking a thought by the boys apology. “By the beauty of the hall, and that what it holds?” She gestured towards the other gals that lingered around wearing the best they could afford, looking ravishing and cleaning up well. “Or are you already thinking of someone else and that is why you seem so distracted with the task at hand?”
“Marveled by the ministry’s noble but null attempt to put a pretty bandage on an already festering wound?” James asked rhetorically, tilting his head down ever so slightly towards the other masked figure to make sure he could be heard over the boisterous crowd and hear her in return. “Not really and I doubt you’re really that interested in what’s running through my mind.”

WHILE THE ANONYMITY OF THE MASQUERADE WAS MEANT TO BE ENTICING, it left Lily with a certain anxiety pooling within her. She was hesitant to attend at all, finding herself on edge for a majority of the evening. Being who she is, and how loud she is about her beliefs – The idea of not knowing if you were talking to your roommate or half a second away from being cursed by Bellatrix Black didn’t sound like an appealing way to end the summer holiday. Knowing better than to decline her invitation, she pulled on a dress and tried to believe that this evening really was an attempt at unity and peace. Regardless, she’s spent the night hovering near the drinks table, using the spiked punch as a means of liquid courage. Or at least, enough to get her from focusing on the lack present identity, and more on enjoying her night. As another masked guest approached, she found herself speak. “I’d avoid the shrimp,” she begins, wrinkling her nose. “I saw another guest run off to the bathroom pretty quick after having one. Seems like a recipe for disaster.”
It wasn’t hard to spot Lily once he was close, her fiery hair standing out among the crowd; James would never admit it to another person but it was quickly becoming his favorite shade of red. He weaved through the crowd to the drink table once he spotted her, the corners of his mouth already turning upwards into the hint of a smile as he neared. “I might much rather brave the shrimp than this ball if we’re talking about recipes for disaster,” he said, his eyes scanning the variety of drinks laid out of the table for something he might like. “Are you having a good time at least?”
James could not deny that the place looked quite grand when he entered in his burgundy suit and gold mask. The ministry was respectable in their intentions with having the ball but he wasn’t quite sure he believed one night of extravagance could solve the growing tension that had been brewing for a long time now. With a deep inhale James decided to leave that thought alone for now and just enjoy the night for what it was, making his way straight to the beverages. Maybe he could find Sirius or Remus in the crowd after grabbing himself a drink. “Oh, excuse me,” he said, dragged out of his thoughts as his shoulder collided into another. “Wasn’t paying attention.”

“You think I’m a fool?” demanded Harry. “No, I think you’re like James,” said Lupin, “who would have regarded it as the height of dishonor to mistrust his friends.”
