clara planned this outfit months before leaving home, it was one of the few things she was excited for, and she's even more excited to be wearing it to the queen's ball of all places. the powder blue and lace gown pairs with wrist length white lave gloves and a blue, silk ribbon intertwined with her hair.
to be paired with my muse at a waltzing lesson in Dowager Countess Selwyn’s parlour-party for Algernon!
Clara knew her expression must be sour, but she couldn't quite get her face to pretend to be happy. Who could be happy in her current position ? At a combination parlour-party-waltzing-lesson with the knowledge that anyone who danced with her was doomed to have smashed toes and a front row seat to just how clumsy she could be.
After endless arguing with her sister, Clara finally gave in and accepted her fate. So now, here she stood, her eyes scanning over the room of men and women buzzing with idle conversation, all waiting as a member of the Dowager Countess's staff made his way around the room, handing each a card with the name of their dancing partner - or victim - etched into the paper.
It took a few minutes, but finally the man stopped in front of her, flipped through the stack of cards, pulled one out and handed it to Clara. She looked over the thick paper, not waiting to flip it over and read the name of who she was paired with.
Algernon Balfour was written in a decorative script, the swirls mimicking the wave of relief that washed over Clara. At least it was someone she knew.. maybe it wasn't someone she knew well but that was better than a perfect stranger.
As she waited for the dancing to start she could feel her sisters eyes peering over her shoulder, getting a peek at the card. "Hm.." She mumbled behind her, the gears in her head turning as she tried to decide what their mother would think, so that she could share the same opinion.
"Come on..' Clara sighed, grabbing her sisters elbow and pulling her further into the room. 'let's find him."

😬 to rescue my muse from an unfortunate dance-card invitation by one of the Botham sisters (or their equally-regrettable cousin, Sir Heyward
" I would image humiliating myself would have a negative impact on my prospects.. " Clara's tone dripped with sarcasm, but that was mostly in an attempt to hide the nearly childish whine that would replace it. She stared down at the intricate lettering on thick paper, an invitation to a parlour-party that doubled as waltzing lessons.
" The point of the lessons is so that you don't humiliate yourself when it really matters. "
Clara was no good at all when it came to dancing. In her opinion this meant she should never do it, especially not in public. Her sister obviously did not share the same sentiments. The older woman snatched the invitation from her hands, calling Clara's attention to her.
" You don't have a choice. Come now.. the colour of this dress doesn't suit you. You need to change. "
Clara stood in a stuffy room, her fingernail scratching at the edge of a dance card she hadn't even bothered to look at yet. Her eyes scanned around the room, chuckling to herself at how the men and women seemed to naturally segregate from one another - that is until the mother, or sister, or whoever-was-escorting-young-women pulled them into an introduction. As the room settled to a dull buzz of conversation the hostess stepped forward, informing everyone participating to find their partners and prepare for the lesson. Clara finally looked down to read hers, pursing her lips at the name. Sir Heyward. Immediately - and without her permission - her nose scrunched up, surely giving her a terribly sour expression. She had never met the man.. but she had met his cousins, and if he was anything like them...
" Sorry, could you point me in the direction.." She trailed off, holding the card up so that the woman she had stopped could see. Clara watched as the woman's lips twitched, threatening a smirk, but she fought it away as her eyes scanned the room.
" Just there. " She instructed, nodding her head towards the man in question.
Clara sighed, taking one more moment to stare down at the name expertly written and gather herself. Finally, with a quick shake of her head to send the stray hair from her eyes, Clara began making her way across the room.
GOODNESS, THREE WEEKS IS HARDLY ANY TIME TO PREPARE! What was Queen Charlotte thinking? While the house is being turned upside-down, you are brusquely dispatched to the streets, set off to do one thing: accomplish.

Full Name: Clara Rose Voss
Nicknames: Just Clara
Skeleton: The Tenderheart
Titles: None
Cast Position: Royalty | Nobility | Gentry
Birthdate: January 21
PHYSICALITY.
Height: 160 cm
Body Type: Clara is lithe, and thankfully she doesn’t think much about her body.. negatively or otherwise. It’s just.. there.
Hair: Her hair is red and curly, normally below shoulder length. She usually has it pinned back loosely.
Eyes: Blue
Skin: Her skin is pale and smooth.
Markings: She has freckles across her entire body, as well as scars from her adventurous childhood. Nothing too dramatic, just from scapes and cuts here and there. She does have a pretty good burn on the inside of her left wrist from a cooking mishap when she was younger.
Walking: Clara is a fast walker, and she hates slow walkers. She’s not really direct or confident about her walking.. her body just doesn’t move that slowly.
Speech: Clara speaks with an English accent that has some Scottish quirks that she picked up from her father. She is a fast talker and occasionally stutters.
Posture/Bearing: Slouching was one thing that her mother would never over look. Clara was taught to sit up straight, with her ankles crossed and her hands folded neatly in her lap.
PERSONALITY.
Presentation: Clara appears vibrant, caring, and educated to the outside world. She nearly always has a smile or laugh on her lips, will stop whatever she’s doing to help a stranger, and when speaking to her you can tell that she had a first class education (notice I said educated, not intelligent. The girl has enough common sense to keep her alive.. that’s about it.)
Interactions: She can be shy, but that’s only with people she feels intimidated by. But even then she tries her best to push past that feeling. She is willing to talk to anyone, for as long as they like.
Lures: Clara is drawn to nature. She loves being outside, sitting in the grass, basking in the sun.
Temperament: She is stubborn and sarcastic. She has a sharp tongue, though she likes to think of it as witty. Though she is caring, she is not gentle. Luckily, having so many sisters, she is not quick to anger.. it takes a lot to really make her angry.
Reputation: She is known for her caring and outgoing nature, as well as her often slipping manners and lack of common sense.
HABITS.
Favorite Hours: A mix of a night owl and a golden hour baby.
Punctuality: She will arrive within five minutes of the agreed upon time. Whether that’s five minutes early or late is a surprise for the day.
Nervous Ticks: Aside from the idle twirling of her hair, her biggest nervous tick would have people thinking she’s crazy, or got some bug crawling on her. She will rub her nose, then her eyes, then her hands, then her leg.. in the span of a few minutes.
Sleeping Style: She in one of those weird back sleepers who doesn’t move at all. She wakes up exactly how she fell asleep, practically dead while sleeping.
EDUCATION.
School: She was an okay student, not good or bad.. just regular.
Known Languages: She knows French, Latin and Gaelic (loosely). Her mother made sure all of her daughters were taught French and Latin. Her father sort of taught them Gaelic. But they mostly just picked up words that he said, as well as sometimes asking him how to say certain things.
Talents: Clara is a jack of all master of none type. She can play a few songs on a few instruments, she can sew a dress, and she can hold a tune if she really wanted to.
Learning Style: Visual and verbal.
PHILOSOPHY.
Religion: She was raised Catholic, her mother is devout, but she hasn’t really formed her own opinion yet.
Superstitions: She carries all of the Scottish superstitions her father passed on, different ways to curse yourself with bad luck.
Virtues: Charity, kindness, and patience.
Vices: Lust, pride, and sloth.
RELATIONSHIPS.
Family: Her family consists of her parents, Jasper and Alice Voss, and her sisters Eliza, Issy, and Kitty.
Friendships: Clara has a lot of acquaintances but not a lot of close friends.
Friends in Need: She is prepared to help anyone in any way.
Needing a Friend: But she is unable to ask for help. Too stubborn.
Discord: She is not an impartial third party. She will have an opinion and she will let you know whose side she’s on.
Enemies: Clara is loyal and honest to a fault, so dishonesty and betrayal hurt her the most.
MOTIVATIONS.
Intentions: Mostly she’s just here because her mother told her to. But she does hope things go well.
Goals: She just wants to be happy, in a way that is true to herself without upsetting her family.
Fears: The fear of disappointing her family.
Regrets: She probably would have fought for the person she loved more.
Breakthroughs: She needs to stop being a push-over. Helping other people, making other people happy, can’t always come before making herself happy.
Goodness, MISS CLARA VOSS has arrived in London. SHE is 22, of the LONDON VOSSES. Though they are NEW to the Season, we can only describe them as GENEROUS and LOYAL, dear reader. Accompanied by HER SISTER, they have settled in and are accepting social calls. But be warned: they are known for their STUBBORNNESS.
FAMILY
The Voss household was never a dull place to be; Jasper and Alice Voss had four children together.. all of them girls.
Alice Voss is a staid woman. Not nessecarily cold or unloving, but she knew what she wanted and she would spend every moment working towards it. And what she wanted was to move up in the world, using her daughters to do so. She was able to marry her first two daughters well, to a baron and viscount respectively. Her third daughter married well in spirit, but the farmer that she held fast to didn't quite have the same ring to it, not for Alice at least.
Clara's father, Jasper, on the other hand.. couldn't care less about who, when, or why his daughters married. He understood the importance of a good match, nevertheless he was often the one whispering in their ears about waiting for 'true love'.. but he'd just as easily have them live at home with him for the rest of their lives.
The oldest of the Voss girls, Eliza, never once humored the idea of staying unwed and in her fathers home. She was indeed their mother made over... multiplied by ten. The four of them had decided that Eliza was the most beautiful of all of them, which comes in handy when you're trying to stack up suitors. The second oldest of the girls, Isabel, was similar in her desire to be married, but her intentions were a little more romantic at heart. She didn't want to be the wife of a viscount (that was just luck), she just wanted to be a wife. Clara always thought that she was wasting her potential, she was easily the smartest.. not even just of the girls, in their family. But Issy wanted nothing more than to raise babies and keep house.
Then there was Catherine, affectionately nicknamed Kitty. Their parents might have made a mistake having Clara and Kitty so close in age.. because Kitty and Clara might well have ruined each other. They were inseperable, and always finding a way into trouble. Kitty was headstrong, determined to live the life she wanted. She would spend her days painting rather than studying like the rest of the girls, and when she eventually decided she would pick her own husband.. she didn't even argue with her mothers protests because she knew in the end, she would do as she pleased.
This is where Clara comes in. The youngest of the four Voss girls and, in her own words, the most boring. Maybe boring wasn't the word, but she felt that by the time she was ready to decide who she was.. her sisters had already snatched up everything worth being. She was simply 'the youngest Voss girl'.. or maybe some combination of her sisters all mushed up together. She didn't really mind it until the last year or so. The excitment that her house always seemed to be swelling with was enough distraction for anyone. But as her last sister left their home.. she was left alone. Alone with herself.
BIOGRAPHY
Clara's birth foreshadowed aspects of the way her life would always be. After three daughters, and a very long labor, by the time Clara took her first breath her mother was so exhausted she barely cared to hold her daughter. This theme carried on throughout the years... her mother was in no way abusive or unloving, she was just always preoccupied. She was preoccupied educating her two oldest daughters, then finding them suitors, then preparing weddings.
Though it didn't feel like it all the time, Clara and her closest sister used this freedom to their advantage by exploring the country side and village where they spent most of their childhood, her favorite pastimes being a thick book shilst sitting in the tall grass of a sunny field and watching her sister paint.
As they got older, their mothers attentions turned to the two younger girls. It was time for them to find their matches as well. Their mothers ambitions stayed as high as they were with her other daughters, but Kitty didn't quite meet the bar, nor did she bend to her mothers arguments, when she announced her intentions to marry a farmer from their village.
This lite a spark in Clara, one that would turn out to be dangerous. Not only did she spend more time than usual outside of her home while the family planned Kitty's wedding.. but seeing her sister so happy with her own decisions inspired her.. and she felt that her family preparing to marry her sister to the man of her choosing was a good sign that maybe she would be able to do the same. The man of her choosing just happened to be the son of a blacksmith in town. Or it would have been, but they didn't quite get to that part of their story before Eliza stepped in. Clara had kept her secret romance under wraps until Eliza found letters between the two of them and immediately took them to their mother. Clara wasn't sure whether their mother was more upset about who she decided to love, or that there might be gossip about her honor that could deter future suitors. All Clara knew for sure was that she was forbidden from seeing him again. And it had put a deep rooted hatred for her sister inside of her. Which only grew when her mother announced that Eliza would be accompanying her to the years season.
PERSONALITY
Describing Clara is difficult.. being the youngest of four daughter she never really got the chance to define herself. She spent a lot of time trying to determine who she was. She jumped head first into any oppurtunity that came her way, trying to find her niche.. she hasn't quite figured it out yet.
But, anyone that knows Clara will know that what is her is her heart. She is extremely caring, though with a sharp tongue you can't quite call her gentle. She would take in anyone who came to her door, give money to anyone begging, and nurse a wild animal back to health if it would let her. She is also a free-spirit. When she was younger she was the one with messy hair and bare feet, running through the firlds at their country home. As an adult this has translated into her being stubborn, sarcastic, and a bit of a daydreamer. She often forgets her manners and the formalities that some interactions require.
