Why Disney ViewMasters look better than the Movies!
Why did ViewMaster Reels look more immersive than the multi-million dollar Disney movies it was based on? Before CGI and VR, Disney fans had a secret portal into the movies: the View-Master. But there’s a mystery at the heart of those tiny film reels. While the movies were flat, 2D animation cels, the View-Master reels featured lush, 3D worlds with incredible depth. Who built Neverland in 3D? Who sculpted a physical Baloo the Bear so you could see him from every angle? In this episode, we explore the connection between a German piano tuner, the 1964 World’s Fair (some other World's Fairs too), and the legendary (but often uncredited) artists like Florence Thomas, Joe Liptak, and Martha Armstrong Hand. These sculptors didn't work for Disney, yet they were the ones who physically "built" the Disney universe in 3D, one clay model at a time
EPCOT World Showcase Promotional Film (Mid 1970s)
This rare promotional film was created to promote the EPCOT World Showcase project circa 1974 or 1975. In this concept, World Showcase was a separately-gated attraction which would be built as one of several EPCOT "Satellite Centers". In this film, the narrator discusses Disneyland and Walt's original plans for the city of EPCOT before previewing the World Showcase, including many attractions which were never built. The concept for Future World would be developed separately in 1975, and the two ideas were combined to create the proposed EPCOT Center in 1976.

Elektron
Dating to the 1960s (probably 1962), this film promotes "The Elektron", an advanced, fully automated type-setting machine designed to significantly improve speed and efficiency in the printing industry. The Elektron was a type of Linotype, or a "line casting" machine , used in printing which is manufactured and sold by the former Mergenthaler Linotype Company and related companies. As the film shows, by utilizing continuous assembly through straight-line delivery, the Elektron eliminates the stop-and-go mechanics of traditional machines, allowing it to set 15 lines per minute compared to the 12 lines per minute of older models. Elektron's innovations include a hydraulic justification system, streamlined mat distribution, and reduced wear on components, all contributing to its long-lasting performance. The machine's design also features enhanced cam profiles, electromagnetic clutch systems, and pre-wired electrical components, making it easier to operate and maintain. Overall, the Elektron represents a major leap in hot metal line casting, providing faster, more efficient, and less maintenance-intensive production for the printing industry.
