It's been nearly ten years since I last did one of these annual posts! Returning to writing in July 2025, after 8 years of absence, was one of the year's biggest personal wins for me. It's still slow and difficult atm. I'm wrangling a fair bit of mental fatigue along with the more general issue of recovering a neglected skill, but the challenge makes the process all the sweeter! Writing remains my favorite thing to do with my brain.
The fic this year was a couple overdue updates for Nights of Hedonia, some languishing drafts completed, a couple snippets, and a handful of new stories including a WIP for Klaine Secret Santa, the completion of which is my top priority going into 2026.

Freshly graduated from music school, Blaine is thrilled when he is chosen to stay in the cast when the production of Into the Woods he was lucky enough to be part of in Boston moves to Broadway. He knows it’s going to be hard returning to New York City – the scene of his epic breakup with his fiancé and the emotional meltdown which cost him his place at NYADA. But he’s determined that this time, everything will be different. Little does Blaine know that out of thousands of potential castmates, his director has chosen none other than Kurt Hummel to play the part of Jack. Blaine has worked hard to recover from their breakup three years ago, and struggles to find a new way to relate to Kurt and simultaneously protect himself, especially when tragedy strikes.
This story looks at what would have happened if Kurt and Blaine had reacted differently to the break up in 6x01 than they did in canon; if events hadn’t brought them back together as soon, and if forgiveness hadn’t come so easily.
Canon compliant through the end of season 5 (and the breakup as described in 6x01).

I have way more than just 3 favourite Kurt outfits, but these were the ones I thought of right away and actually had saved on my phone. I just love his skirt outfits, especially that one, and the one from The Substitute is so so cute (Actually, I'm p sure the one with the scarf is also from that episode, prev!!). The last one just has so many subtle details/accessories and all the colours go so well together :) Also, that bag is probably one of my Kurt accessories in general

I'm especially fond of his later looks where he wore a lot of shirts that showed off how broad his shoulders had gotten and his slim hips and waist to offset it. The silhouette is so good when he gets taller and fills out that way. I do love homebrew basement couture Kurt of the school years but for me post-graduation is where it's at!

Thank you for tagging me! So many great outfits are already in the thread! Here's 4 Kurt outfits from season 4 that I adore (and why!).
From "Glease" 6x06 the outfit Kurt wore when he and Rachel returned to Lima. The black evokes mourning, while the lavenderish-gray gave me a feeling of liminality--Kurt trying to resolve his feelings about Blaine. And then the black wool scarf with dark purple paisley motifs gives me a weird vibe of ambivalence--caught between life and death. The result is Kurt looking pale, ghostly, and very fragile.
From "Glee Actually" 6x10 in which Kurt wore two different outfits of navy blue with copper and bronze. I like this one 'cause he looks comfy and snugglable. Also made me think of Odin a little bit who wore dark blue robes and is Santa's folklore/mythic origin. Also a magician and a crosser of boundaries. Psychopomp shit!
From "Girls (and Boys) On Film" the tuxedo in Kurt's "Come What May" fantasy sequence. It's such a beautiful formal suit and the collar of the shirt just fascinates me? It's a weird hybrid design I couldn't find a name for in the past. Very Kurtish in the subtle detail of it.
And finally from "Lights Out" 4x20, Kurt visiting Isabelle in a neatly detailed outfit! There's cherries on his shirt (first love! spring's renewal?), a kind of overcast stitching on his collar depicting something like a tape measure (be measured/careful?), and an endless knot (eternal cycles of death and rebirth?) on his pocket-square. All really cool details as he faces the next episode in which his father's cancer arc is resolved and where he reunites with Blaine again. And he looks lovely!

It's really interesting to look at the difference between Kurt's mentor Isabelle Wright and Blaine's mentor June Dolloway; Isabelle immediately finds personal Ohio connections with Kurt and confesses her insecurities, she's looking for someone to reignite her artistic side and feels a little crushed by the restrictions of management -- she sees herself in Kurt except he does have better organizational/assertive skills than she does, so there's kind of an aunt-and-nephew vibe to them, the lightly scattered fairy godmother to his clearly-defined goals and style. She throws open the door to a world of high fashion and kikis and access to things that Kurt's been dreaming of and sewing up in solitude since he was a wee little thing, and she ushers him through gently and as a friend-boss. Which is great because Kurt's due a kind-hearted person who understands his interests and talents to encourage him, who can help him chart his New York course.
June establishes herself off the bat as someone to be appealed to and wooed for the power that she holds -- which is also social and career capital, so long as Blaine toes the line and understands that he's her protege and he represents her in everything he does. Which is his bailiwick to begin with! Blaine's input into his work with June is probably nowhere near Kurt's with Isabelle and (especially at that point) that's what he needs, anyhow, is a firm hand and clear, direct guidance. June's leeway where Blaine's concerned is about his performance charisma and his ability to charm people, because she doesn't have to worry much about him succeeding at those things, and in turn she provides him a safety net, a foundation, and lbr a figure of ultimate authority -- though one he can push back against if it's important enough to him, which June can appreciate (within reason) because Blaine's biddable otherwise.
There's definitely overlap, they're probably both getting taken to those lunches at Indochine and wherever, but while Kurt and Isabelle's would be breezy and chatty like intergenerational workplace pals where career and socializing intermingle freely because they love both things equally, June and Blaine's would be more like Aunt March and Amy from Little Women lol -- the powerful dowager with her attentive and eager-to-learn companion who'll be rewarded with a trip to Europe to hobnob with important people. I just really love that they both had these relationships with these older women, in ways that were specific to what each of them needed for their personality styles. (There's something a touch darker about June's mentorship vs Isabelle's, which I think is also fitting for them, but that's something for fic rather than meta heh)
i know the kurt stuff and biphobia has been talked to death, but to give my two cents anyway?
,,,, again this is one of those situations where multiple things are true. kurt IS worried about the idea of someone he looks up to suddenly changing on him/that it means he’s going back in the closet and he’s jealous because he likes blaine and he’s being biphobic in this moment.
i just find it difficult to argue that he’s not? he outright states that he doesn’t believe bisexual guys in particular exist and that it’s only an excuse to “feel normal.”
and the fact that he’s also jealous/hurt/worried about the idea of blaine like, retreating from this common experience between them, doesn’t change the fact of what he’s saying is harmful. prejudice of any kind is prejudice regardless of the intent behind it.
for another example; in 4.01, p much the whole glee club (blaine included!) is transphobic to unique in telling her she shouldn’t wear the clothes or makeup she’s comfortable in while sitting with them at lunch in public. i don’t think most of them mean to be transphobic there, nor do they fully understand unique atp — it’s instead something they say in service of protecting their newfound status. but none of that changes that it is transphobic to tell a trans girl who’s supposed to be your friend she can’t wear makeup, even though that’s how she’s comfortable. the difference between that episode and this one is that even though it should have been an onscreen conversation, unique is wearing her makeup by the end and the nd accept this, so clearly some reconciliation has happened. in this - kurt is never really made to learn Anything this ep. the whole thing more or less resolves with him being Right.
even if you think kurt doesn’t Mean it so much as he’s channeling all his other frustrations w the situation into this oversimplified statement, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s biphobic in nature.
also, though. i do kind of think he believes it? mainly because A) kurt was canonically the only openly gay kid at mckinley for a while, had never been exposed to other queer teens of any kind (that he knew of/that the narrative treated seriously) to talk about these issues with until season 2, hadn’t gone online to do much of his own research (this fact is related to sex but i think it’s reasonable to infer he hasn’t engaged much with other gay kids or anyone online at this stage) and has been living in a conservative state/town his entire life. the idea that he’s internalized some stuff does not surprise me.
B) i’m pretty sure kurt thinks the whole “people only say that because they want to feel normal for a change” thing is true and is projecting it onto blaine, because that was more or less his experience, with britney. like, he kind of got pressured by sue into considering he Might not be gay, but you (or at least i) never really get the sense he genuinely thinks he might be attracted to her or girls in general. he’s testing out a theory he was given, and kind of trying to “feel normal” and reconnect with burt.
and it’s not wrong of him, morally, to have had that experience. but it is wrong to treat it as the end-all be-all.
like i said in my last post, it’s hard to Know what’s going in with blaine when we’re not in his pov, but based on what he says, i think it’s reasonable to assume he genuinely thinks he may be attracted to girls/that it’s at least a possibility. but kurt can’t make space for that because he can’t entirely understand it when it runs so counter to his own experience.
and like, btw! i know i say this a lot about all tbe characters when talking about flaws lmao, but; i don’t think that makes him evil! i thinks it’s pretty realistic, and there’s also little to say he couldn’t grow out of this mindset — and i like to imagine he does. but at the end lf the day, the show has a pretty biphobic track record all in its own, and every character (including ones that are supposed to be very sympathetic!) has said some bs at some point or another.

yeah my frustration with characters never tends to be “they had a had a Bad moment here”, it’s always more what the writing does with it — and the writing fairly often shows kurt behaving less than perfectly (which is fun and juicy!) and then rarely being confronted with it (less so).
and YEAH re: the way blaine reacts with kurt being Right There. an unintended and ironic side effect of this ep not really being from blaine’s pov and kurt insisting he Can’t be bi and them never talking again in this ep, but blaine knowing kurt is upset about it as he watches rachel kiss blaine is that… is that it makes it uh…. REALLY easy to read this as a moment of blaine feeling pressured to conform to what kurt expects/deciding it’s just not worth it. i don’t think it’s the intended reading or that you have to read it that way, but based on the way the story plays out… it’s not implausible. and tbqh blaine is someone we come to know to be pretty susceptible to influence/external pressures, at least by my read.
the kick of it all is that i don’t think this ep absolutely needed to resolve with blaine being bi; i think more positive bi rep in general is good always (and i think, arguably, if this ep were airing closer to today, it might have resolved that way?) but i understand why, circa 2011, they didn’t feel they could fully commit to writing a story where a character that we originally knew as gay turned out to be attracted to women as well, particularly when having a sympathetically written gay teenage character was Such a big deal in the first season in the first place. i don’t actually think there’s anything wrong with that as a concept, but i understand why they didn’t feel they could do it at the time.
but i do fundamentally think there was a better way to write the story they did feel they could tell without it ultimately resolving in the seeming implication that a gay character questioning something like this is Always just edging back into the closet…. even though he literally never once said he didn’t think he was also still attracted to guys.
For real!! And like… interesting character choice to have him blame himself for the transfer but it never really gets?? Examined or challenged in any way? If anything the narrative kind of reaffirms it with the whole “you couldn’t face the bullies at your school so you can do it at mine” thing later on. it’s
I haven’t written much about this yet because I think there’s possibly a fic brewing that’d hopefully do it more justice than me rambling lol, but I think a probably inordinate amount about the friend he went to Sadie Hawkins with who also got bashed and how that/he might affect the survivor’s guilt thing.
THAT being said, i do think an underrated and very sweet aspect of early klaine is how much blaine just like?? very readily joins kurt’s world? like when kurt joins dalton he’s also good about inviting kurt into his world.
but like… it starts with blaine coming to mckinley to confront karofsky, and from there, he just? is so Around? like kurt makes a point of saying blaine asked Him to hang out, not the other way around, and got them tickets to rent. he goes to dinner with kurt and one of his other friends and tries to engage with mercedes! he goes to their championship game and a party with kids from another school, who he mostly doesn’t know very well! just like… even as a friend, blaine is so willing to both reach out/initiate things with kurt, but also be part of kurt’s world and not expect kurt to just come to him and be in his?
and it’s easy to see, tbh, how kurt might interpret that as romantic interest, but it’s also just like. Good Friend Shit.
the other side of this that’s interesting to me though is that?? blaine is SO open and ready to have kurt as a new friend when we don’t really get a sense of whether he’s particularly close with anyone at dalton? he says they’re his friends in season 3, and i think he means it, but when we see them interact in season two, it doesn’t?? really seem like he’s super close or hangs out with anyone else?
and honestly that probably comes down to blaine not Totally being a character in his own right yet. but it honestly kind of tracks with my read of him? like he, at this point, is not very emotionally honest with a lot of people. so my personal headcanon in that regard is blaine’s very “liked by everyone, known by few” at dalton. like people are nice to him!! it’s not bad there!! but people don’t really Know him - and i don’t think he means for that to happen? he puts on a front of knowing what he’s doing but the end result is people, like, buy it a little too well, so there’s always this barrier. but blaine is SUCH a people oriented person and then kurt shows up and needs a friend and is vulnerable with him and he shares like, the slightest amount of vulnerability back, and he’s just? a very ride or die friend from that point on? (until it turns into something else)

I spent some time yesterday learning how to use yWriter to organize my disorderly draft of TRoOS because I can no longer rely on my mind to hold a multi-chapter fic in my head the way I used to be able to, and that's become a painfully limiting factor on how well I'm working on multi-chapter/part stories & 'verses. Hopefully it will help with the brain mush to impose an external structure.
