ANOTHER new calf for J-Pod! Welcome to life in the Salish Sea, J053. Mother is presumed to be J017 (Princess Angeline). It was also announced earlier this month that J017′s daughter J028 (Polaris) is assumed to be in the late stages of pregnancy. Wonderful news for the SRKWs - and it keeps coming!

It has me wondering if this is another situation like with J51 Nova. We all thought J19 was his mom and it turned out to be J41. Maybe J53 is J28’s baby.
But is J53 is Polaris’ then why would they say they think she is still pregnant?
That was announced earlier this month – for all we know, J028 is indeed the mama, and J017 is helping out while J028 gets a wee break from new orca mama duties! Time will tell :-)
J17 was also announced to be pregnant.

Not to sound dumb, but how can you tell looking at this picture?
Oh I just assumed this was the only recent photo they had of her on hand. Odd that they wouldn’t have gotten a more “revealing” photo but I wouldn’t let a NOAA researcher steer me wrong!
@freedom-for-orcas I don’t think the above image is supposed to show her pregnant belly, but it was included in the person’s original post, so I just kept it attached. :) While there hasn’t been an official confirmation post (at least not one that I’ve seen), I do think that this pregnancy may very well be true—Dr. Durban was involved in the aerial shots gathered of the Northern Residents last year!

She is in general a quite bulky animal, so I didn’t pay real attention. Hopefully she will show up with a new calf soon. The J22s need a girl!!
Valentin’s cause of death

Marineland France reports on the necropsy findings for Valentin, a killer whale who died on October 12th, 2015. Results determine that he died of a twisted intestine/twisted bowel with symptoms manifesting a few hours before his death. (translated, French) “It is with great sadness that Marineland announced Monday 12 October the death of Valentin, an Orca born within the Park. All teams were extremely attached and are very affected. We have made every effort to understand the faster the causes of the deaths and have performed analyses by a team of veterinary experts. The necropsy revealed that Valentin died of a bowel twist. The origins are varied and little known. This twist appeared suddenly, Valentin showed no symptoms after the natural disaster, the first symptoms occurred a few hours before his death. A direct link with the floods cannot be established. Our veterinary teams (5 veterinary) provide a day-to-day monitoring of the health of animals. In addition, all pumping of seawater and filtration systems are functional and we found water of satisfactory quality. We received yesterday, Tuesday, October 13, the visit of the DDPP (Direction Départementale de Protection des Populations). The key now is to continue to take care of our animals and reverting to the more quickly to a normal situation. We received very many brands of support, they we have sincerely affected and encouraged.
